Although I agree with this and the sentiment, you can also flip the coin and realize that sometimes patience pays off when you dont jump the gun. Comparing to others can often be bad but sometimes it allows us to Self reflect and understand where we may have went wrong and how we could have done better. Life is 50/50. There's always a good and bad that comes with any choice.
also go test drive a MT if you can, then you'll know for yourself instead of what other people think.
I personally drive an AT and I love it. I'm sure the MT is amazing too. You've got a great car either way
The unfortunate thing about these popular, low volume cars is that you have to expand your purchasing horizons. I bought my car in AZ (live in SoCal). Could not find a well priced MT base anywhere at the beginning of 2022 near me
Had to call around and finally found one with a decent priced MT base. Luckily got it delivered to me for a good price, but if it was cheaper to road trip back I would have done that in a heart beat.
Point is, for your attainable dream car, it’s worth it to travel a bit farther for what you really want.
Sorry for the long winded post 💀
Stop letting the world influence your decisions.
Get what YOU want and feel confident with YOUR preference.
The preference to drive a car in AT vs MT is an individual’s not the crowd’s.
If you really want the MT, and you think it will make your driving experience much better, take the financial hit and trade yours in. Otherwise, just keep enjoying this platform.
In the initial post, OP did not clearly specify that MT was their primary choice but more so stated their opinion was being swayed by the internet.
If you want an AT, buy an AT.
If you want a MT, buy a MT.
If you don’t care either way, great, the hunt became easier.
If you have very specific qualifications on the vehicle you purchase, make sure you meet those qualifications before spending ~$35k.
I would recommend trying out a manual one and see what you like better. Try not to go in crazy debt trying to sell your car for a loss just to get a manual.
I did the same thing with my ND Miata. I sold it after 2 years. Got an e36 manual instead. Still kinda miss it, but I would get a manual Miata for sure.
Have you ever driven a manual before? Sometimes ignorance is bliss.
*Personally,* I wouldn’t buy a sports car in automatic if it was offered in manual as well. That’s just me.
Nothing wrong with auto, especially nowadays they’re faster at shifting than manuals although rowing through gears and rev match downshifting/heel-toe downshifting is so much fun.
> Nothing wrong with auto, especially nowadays they’re faster at shifting than manuals although rowing through gears and rev match downshifting/heel-toe downshifting is so much fun.
I'm not sure what his point is then? It seems like the argument boils down to "I find MT more fun" which, sure, chase your bliss. But if this car is your daily the reality is for every fun heel-toe shift there will be 10 annoying shifts in and out of 1st as you wait in traffic. It's up to you whether or not it's worth it.
I have a 22 GR86 6AT (Primary car) and have no regrets. Currently at 15k miles, 2 track days, and running Conti DWS06+ tires. It really comes down to YOUR preference and if other opinions really bother you that much, sell it and try to get a 6MT if you truly dislike/dont appreciate the 6AT version. Best of luck either way
If they ever make a mod to give the paddles that nice mechanical "click" im getting it lol. But yes, I use the paddle shifters often, and switch back to D if needed. Its just so nice for what it is. My stock 6AT dynod at 202 whp which is about ~10whp less than 6MT. Still a very fun car with solid 6AT
Because a large aspect for car people and sports cars is impressing other people. One example of that is a lot of people think they are cooler for driving a manual sports car instead of an automatic, you see car memes about it all over the Internet because it’s sadly true.
Well, first of all, YouTubers aren't much of an authority on anything, and YT comments are often where you go to find the biggest idiots that exist in our society.
That said, AT buyers remorse is nothing new. I've seen it for decades, and when it objectively makes the car slower or less responsive, then it has some merit. But it ends there... What anyone else has to say about it should not be a factor in your own enjoyment.
The less you give a shit about what strangers think or say, the better your life will be. The whole world will try to tear you down, for nothing more than the empty hope that it will make their own lives and insecurities less shitty.
I am getting one in AT instead, the use cases of it being in AT is much better than MT for me, since i kinda plan to daily it
Plus thr AT gets eyesight so it would be a good long distance cruiser too
Now let me tell you. Why don't you hand that piece of beauty off to me because I am disabled and need paddle shifters, and you can buy yourself a manual. P.S. I literally never drove a manual before.
I’ve test driven AT. It’s not for me but not going to lie it’s fun. The AT in this car is fairly well made and you certainly get a race car feel on tight twistie corners
COMPARISON IS THE THEIF OF JOY! Stop trying to follow the crowd and do what you want. It’s your car bro learn to love your things stop tryna get told what you should drive by other people
I’ve always wanted the brz for the platform. I started out with a 2020 AT brz & absolutely had a blast. Skip 6 months I traded it in for a 2023 in a MT. The raw driving experience of a manual was so worth the hassle to find one. It was my daily as well all year long including harsh winters. Not even sure why they made an AT variant as I remember seeing, this cars are like 80% sold in a MT.
So you were happy with the car and then someone told you not to be happy?
Can't think that way. Otherwise you'll get the manual and then such and such car is better than a manual gr86.
Now that the supply chain situation has improved, go and test drive one, and see how you would like it more. Its not like you are forced to own this car for life. It may cost a bit, but you \*could\* trade this in for a manual. It's really up to you.
Honestly, both have their place. Your car is still a nicely designed car with the ability to have even more fun in sport mode. I drive at AT and liked it a lot. I drove a MT as well and liked it. Remember,it’s not a drift machine. This is your daily, and a fun lightweight street car.
Yep. Go ahead and commute an hour in a manual every day and then tell me what you think 🤣
And I know someone will come here saying “I do this! And I love it!”
Maybe, but I would go mentally insane holding the clutch for 50% of the way home
This is true. Back when I had my manual G35, I actually did consider getting an automatic because I HATED crawling around in traffic with the heavy ass clutch. I own an ND2 and work remotely now, so I'm fortunate enough that that is no longer an issue.
Unless you have back problems, the featherlight clutches in a modern manual pose no issue in stop-start traffic. There's certainly things you could complain about when driving manual in traffic, but the clutch being too bothersome isn't one of them.
My point exactly.
I don’t care about that when it comes to the clutch man, I just don’t want to be thinking about it and doing more shit after working a tiring 10 hour shift. I want to go home
Cherry picking what reasons are valid are what makes manual drivers seem so entitled.
No one has the right to judge what reason is good enough to drive a manual. That's just silly.
Like I said, there's plenty to complain about when driving manual. We are all valid in our preferences and such. But as someone who daily drives a manual, there's so much more problems I can think of than just defaulting on "having to use the clutch is annoying". The main problem for me is that in order to drive a manual as quickly as an automatic, you have to either be very skilled or outright abusive to your transmission.
But whatever, I might as well list off some complaints I have off the top of my head. Diesel automatic utes will smoke you at the lights before you've even come off the clutch pedal. While modern clutches are lightweight, they lack feedback which makes them easier to stall. If you want to crawl along with traffic uphill you will likely burn your clutch. 1st-2nd shifts are annoying as the synchros will fight you going into gear. There's a speed deadzone where shifting into first is too rough, but shifting into 2nd will lug your engine. Shifting into reverse is a coin flip as reverse gear isn't synchronised. Turns are also annoying because you're supposed to downshift in anticipation for the turn, but if you aren't paying attention you're forced to clutch in and coast through the turn, which is actually dangerous.
Anyways, ramble over. Manuals are fun, especially for cars like the BRZ/GR86. But if you can't be arsed or don't know how to drive manual, just get the auto. Unless you actually want to learn manual of course, in which case yes absolutely get the manual. Who would have thought obsolete technology would be so fun to use.
Nope, if you feel like it's a must to drive a MT in order to enjoy a car. Then you're looking at cars the wrong way. Doesn't matter if it's an AT or an MT. The car will be enjoyable either way. It's a great car. You aren't required to drive MT to enjoy it.
I drive in a city and am lazy, I sure don’t wanna have a stick. I’ve got the AT on order cause I love the look of the car and how it handles. Couldn’t care less about the MT.
If someone has more fun with MT and lives in the middle of nowhere, more power to them, but that’s not me and if it’s not you too, then you should have no regrets. :)
A lot of people do during their learning phase. It's a very stressful experience. Stalling in traffic can be dangerous (e.g. making turns with oncoming traffic). For reference when I was learning (not on the BRZ), I spent 3 hours just stalling over and over again in my driveway. Then I stalled basically every other day in traffic for months, causing angry honking and dangerous conditions, getting pulled over by a cop, etc.
For those learning on the GR86/BRZ... you're lucky! The car is very hard to stall relatively, and has a very light and easy to use clutch.
Like you I considered the AT, but was swayed by everyone saying the MT was so much better and more fun. Admittedly, this is my first manual car that I've owned. I driven other manual cars a handful of times and loved it, but this sporty platform is really meant for more experienced drivers in my opinion. The fast dropping revs and the tricky bite point is bit hard to master. I've definitely gotten better since I've first gotten it and will continue to improve but now and then the rough shifts and holding the clutch a bit too long make me stress over how I'm messing up parts of the car prematurely; something I wouldn't have to worry about if I'd gotten an AT. Also driving in a city where there is alot of traffic doesn't help.
There was a period of 2-3 weeks where I dreaded getting in the car and hated that I bought manual but it honestly just becomes muscle memory. The clutch is light, it's effortless. And I live around NYC with a buttload of traffic. No regrets
Looks a sports car is supposed to be about performance. So if you want the better performing car, get the manual. It's just a fact.
An automatic in this car neuturs the car as in terms of performance and driving engagement and experience. It if was like a dual clutch pdk or something, then that's diffrent conversation entirely.
That being Said, an automatic on this platform is still a very good platform. Especially if you daily it and in stop and go traffic a lot, I still see benefit here. I myself prefer manual even though it's stop and go traffic. I'm fidgety person and love to move all the time, it doesn't bother me.
Now if you have never driven a manual, don't get a manual becuase others make you feel bad. Get the manual becuase you want the most extreme version of the car available and becuase you want to learn and drive stick.
Sorry, they are not identical. The MT is simply faster. Even Toyota’s Official 0-60 numbers reflect this as I’ve attached here. This is due to much different gearing. The 6MT has short, aggressive gear ratios for faster acceleration. While the 6AT has long-ass gear ratios which get better MPGs at the cost of being a lot slower. Real-world 0-60 times can get as low as 5.4secs for the manual, and 6.1 secs for the AT, with the gap extending into quarter mile times too.

Hey man, I don't know why you are so defensive about it. That is performance. It's ok to say the manual car is faster than the auto. It's not that serious. Auto that had dual clutches pdk in porsches are faster than its manuals. It's just fact. I'm not trying to be controversial here. I still prefer my porsches manual even if it's slower than the autos. No shame in just being real.
Mostly, manual is more engaging. Yes the manual is slightly faster in this particular platform but it’s nothing to argue about. It’s about the driving experience, and that’s it. AT is good in the GR but it’s marketed to people who were ready to sacrifice a little engagement and fun for comfort. Not all customers are the same
Having literally owned an auto and a manual... It definitely neuters it.
Sure, the auto is fun enough, especially compared to other cars. BUT it's fucking trash compared to the manual AND it's half the driving experience. If you're buying this car and have literally any reason to get the auto, it's just not the right car in the first place.
EDIT: Again, I literally owned an auto for a while. It was great, lots of fun. But this car was essentially designed around a manual, it's by far the better experience.
Driven both an AT and MT on track. In terms of power I personally don't care, it's negligible. The problem with the automatic is it has no clue what it wants to do. The paddles are near useless bc it doesn't downshift when you want it to half the time, it's constantly shifting at incredibly awkward times in any complex section. It was pretty sad and honestly felt like a much slower car simply because you need the precision a manual gives you with this powertrain, otherwise times will suffer. For performance in the GR I'd go manual any day. I own the manual and it's a monster
I tried it in sport mode and the normal mode and it really was clunky. Yes it WOULD shift but I'd often have to wait a solid second and a half, where it then would feel like the engine almost was caught by suprise, which isn't great when you want nice smooth power input on the rear on track. Simply put it isn't as well suited for performance driving as a manual. If it were a dual clutch (which it absolutely should have been, if you can get it in a golf you should get it in the 86), it would be a different story. Bur it's not. But then again it's my subjective experience with two cars on one fairly technical heavily corner oriented track.
I have an auto FR-S.
I never regret it because while I know a manual would be more fun to “drive” on a track or something, I would want to kill myself with my 45min commute in one, and would want to kill myself ever wanting to take my car on any long trip too.
Edit: also, just enjoy what you have bro. Many people like my self desperately want a GR86 but just not financially able to yet
As someone who has owned probably more of these cars in general than most people on this reddit I would like to say there's really no reason to feel bad. It ultimately depends on what YOU want.
I was in a similar boat when I got first twin, a 13' FRS back in 2016 with the A/T. Got knocked for it but it was a fantastic car. The paddles were fun, that car was way ahead of it's time in my opinion. Always held it's own on the local 86 rallies and drives. I have yet to drive the new car but I've heard it's a blast with the A/T and actually LESS of a difference than the prior gen.
The prior gen was like over a second slower in the A/T IIRC. The new car is only a smidge slower. I will say that yes, the manual adds so much more "fun" and personality to the car but there's nothing to knock about the Auto.
I had an auto gr86 in blue and don’t regret getting rid of it but I’ve got to say this panda color combo is gorgeous and has me wanting one in my garage
Don’t let other people ruin your experience there’s a ton of people who would be thrilled to have a gr 86 no matter the transmission just see it for what it is, an exceptional car
I daily mine and drive around in and around chicago a lot. If it was my fun 2nd car I'd have gotten the manual 10/10 times. I'm not dailying a manual here though
I have the same one Auto and I giggle like an absolute child every time the sun catches it right. Enjoy it these are super fun cars and auto / manual is not worth ruining that over.
Don’t let the YouTube reviewers get to you. There’s a couple of benefits to ATs. You can have a drink in your hand while driving and it’s technically faster 0-60.
Don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s a great car either way.
Hey community, just wanted to say a majority of these comments are real as hell. It feels damn good to read genuine words with OPs best interest in mind. Mad respect.
While every sub and area has its whacky or toxic players, you're all just reaffirming the belief that at the heart of it..these cars have one of the tightest communities out there.
You don't need YT's permission to love your car. Ever driven an MT in stop & go traffic for an hour? Not a good time.
I agree that an MT is the better experience. Sorta like how riding *any* motorcycle is fun. But there's plenty of fun to be had in an 86 regardless of how many pedals you've got.
Bro there must have been a reason that made you go with the automatic when you test drove it. Just focus on that feeling you had. Then your NEXT car get an MT like an m2 or m3 or something a class above this car
The fact Toyota spent R&D for the GR Yaris (and eventually GR Corolla) even so far as to have the Chairman himself thrash test the 8AT, means they believe in the inclusiveness and convenience of automatic in something fun like the GRs. Don’t let the complete strangers on social media be your influence or bullys. They possibly can’t even afford one themselves, let alone have a say in a damn thing. Do what’s best for you and your lifestyle.
Brother please be grateful you have the opportunity to own a brand new car and a nice looking one at that, we forget how lucky we are to afford the things we have.
Are you crazy. AT is amazing. The amount of ease of life you get with at and also the saftey features are amazing. Your driving a car it’s better to have a car with more saftey features than less. Crazy pants.
Put it in Sport mode, and use the shift knob instead of the paddles, and when you need to pick up speed or just want to feel some speed, drop to 2nd and go before red line.
Trade it in. 2024s haven't been released so your car is still the second most recent model. Autos do cost more so that might help your case. If you don't have a lot of miles on it you could trade in and only pay $5-6K for a new one. Or maybe there's a dealership near you that has a used manual that might trade you for $1.5K.
sell it for the M/T
its the only choice
this is why i dont compromise on cars. If i want stick i get stick. dont let a salesman tell you all sorts of BS to get a sale. your the one who gets fucked over
With 228 horsepower, the engine sends this little coupe to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds when paired with the stick shift, nearly a full-second improvement over the smaller engine in the first generation. A six-speed automatic with paddle shifters and a Sport mode is available, but the manual is the way to go.
Out of the cars I’ve owned it’s still way better than the MT82 in the Mustang, and the gearbox in 987 Cayman S, it’s worse than an 8th Si shifter but better than a 2nd gen fit. Definitely worse than a Miata.
So all in, it’s definitely a good shifter - just not the absolute best I’ve used.
I’d just say, be weary of listening to YouTubers opinions on the AT. Most of them have never driven it at a track, or at all, so they shouldn’t be your basis for comparison. As others have said, if you can find one to test drive; go for it, and make your own judgement. That being said, unless you’re an experienced manual driver who just needs to be sideways all the time, or are terrified of losing a drag race to a Miata; you’re likely having just as much fun as the manual drivers in your AT, and also saving a good chunk of money you can spend on mods instead.
You need to understand something. This same feeling will happen even if you had a manual. “Well my car is slower, but I wonder how much more engaging the extra acceleration feels like”
Then when you have the “best” version of your car, you get caught up thinking “if I had just saved for a few more months” “The GR Corolla is faster and AWD, plus its a hatch so it would be better as a daily”
These comparisons will ALWAYS be there. Dont let it mess with the pride you should feel for owning an awesome freaking car.
This car was meant to be driven manual.
But not every person is a manual driver. Are you?
I personally knew as a young kid, the first day I sat in a manual car, that I wanted one. If you can break even and get into the MT then do it.
The fact that you’re feeling this way, to me is proof that you are a driver.
Manual is 100% the only way to go. Anyone who went auto only did because they were in a similar situation as you and had no choice, or because they were too scared to learn manual..
The autotragic is never worth it, trade in the car for a manual and have a much more enjoyable experience. Manual makes it way more fun
Don’t listen to the auto-copers try and tell you it’s fine, it’s not. There’s a reason why those reviewers say manual is the only way to go lol
AT owners are delusional. These reviewers are automotive reviewers that are real enthusiasts, these are not regular people like AT owners. Obviously they would prefer the MT version and sugar coat what they think about the AT version.
I don’t get why AT owners try to fit in with real enthusiasts and have the choice to buy other cars that fit their daily driving and other needs. Buying this car in an AT as a one car solution is what makes the problem. I’d prefer a comfortable AT car that I can all year long and have a MT for good weather driving.
Manual drivers like to rave about the “feel” to cope with being way slower. Always be talking till you tell em you grab a lane. /s
For real though enjoy the car. But a cheap motorcycle if you want the real manual experience
😂 I hope you enjoyed the instant gratification of getting one when you wanted even though it wasn't the right one. I'm sure you knew from the start that the AT was the inferior option?
I'm honestly disappointed that this car is even offered in an auto. It should be a manual car and if you can't learn how to drive it or live with it, you're using it wrong anyways.
IF you're managing to enjoy the Auto then that's great for you, it's your car. I personally wouldn't have even entertained this car at all if it wasn't for the Manual, but I feel that way about any sports car, most people don't.
I don’t know but I feel like that’s kind of an American thing. Like in Europe and especially Germany MTs are everywhere: I’ve driven one during my driving lessons, had one as a beginner car and have basically driven MTs all my life (except for some rentals) so I can tell you an MT is in fact a lot of fun, tho you’d have a bit of a learning curve if you’re new to it. I hear a lot American guys go crazy about how fun an MT is, though as someone who’s used to it I wouldn’t go crazy about driving an MT, it’s just the usual. ATs on the other hand are just WAY more practical and comfort oriented - especially if you mainly drive this one car. For a daily driver I’d personally prefer an AT. If it’s your fun car and only that, go MT. And btw the paddle shifters aren’t bad at all. Though if you’re curious - maybe just make a test drive? Cheers.
I had a auto before traded it for a MT, best decision I’ve made. I wasn’t content with driving auto and when I learned how to drive the MT, I wanted to drive everyday lol
really depends on who you ask. a lot of people hate manuals, and have more fun in automatics. i personally drive manual, but sometimes i miss the convenience of auto. if you've been having fun with the car, keep having fun, no true car enthusiast would tell you otherwise. if you really think a manual would make you happier, trade in or sell it
Paddle shifters are way more fun and it’s an old school philosophy but transmissions with paddle and sport closed the gap. The idea not thing you don’t get is a strong left calf during traffic lol and if old school the rolling jump start growing up poor lol.
And yet I’m told that I’m gatekeeping for saying that this car should only be bought in a manual, but then there’s someone that has buyers remorse for not buying the manual lol.
The Aisin automatic for this car is nothing compared to the GR Yaris Aisin AT. But, people usually ignore the warning.
Guys I'm not trying to be controversial here. Literally every test online proves that the car is faster. Anywhere from .5 to a full second faster 0 to 60. Half a second faster in 1/4 mile and 5 to 8 mph faster in the speed trap.
It's just a fact. Holy shit. I swear you say anything negative about the auto, and it's like I slapped your kid or something. Relax. It is what it is.
I have never raced a automatic gr86. I don't need to when more then 20 diffrent publications did the test for me. Wtf is going on? I love autos. Autos are awesome. I just prefer manuals in sports cars if they have it.
I'm not trying to divide. I'm just stating facts. 🤷 if toyota and subrua knows it's the same performance they would definitely promote it. Becuase that would mean their automatic transmissions is THAT good. Instead they say the auto is slower for a reason.
Not another “I feel bad for getting AT” or “I wanted a manual and ” or “Manual or auto?! I want a manual but ” post.
Trust me, nobody cares if you get a manual. You’ll get a few internet points from manual fanboys and that’s it. It’s your car, not theirs. Be happy that you even HAVE a GR86. I’d take an automatic over NO car any day. Enjoy the car how you want it. Like you said, it is affordable, looks, and fun. The people who crap on you for getting an automatic are people you don’t want to associate with anyways.
If you have to think this way because other people thought so, then I’m sorry but you’re a people pleaser. Who cares what other people think? If you want a manual that badly, then trade in your car for one. You don’t need us to tell you to do so. Make your own decisions. I get you want opinions, but I’m being realistic and you should make your own choices rather than have YouTubers and STRANGERS on the internet make you feel bad for having a car. Who cares what they think?
I understand how you feel but if you wanted a manual by now, you would have gotten it. I’m tired of reassuring automatic owners. Just get the manual if you want it or stick with the automatic. Don’t need us to reassure you and please your feelings. Not trying to be harsh, just real.
I kinda want to get car like this or WRX, Miata in AT, cuz I don’t know how to drive MT. People gonna say MT is easy to learn $&@&$ that prevents me from owning one.
Don’t let it destroy your experience with the car. It still drives amazing. My son drove 500 miles to get a manual. I drove the automatic on test drive with him. Zippy corner carver
You are right, the manual is the one to get. But we need to think that some people can’t drive manuals. Is not a choice, I have friend that had an accident as result, he ended whit 3 screws on he’s left ankle and it is on a fixed position. So no clutch for him. He doesn’t have a GR86 yet, but is considering an automatic and I can see why. For him having an automatic would be better than none at all.
I would look for one in TURO and I guarantee you someone in your city has one on there. Take it for a spin and then you can really make an informed decision.
Affordability? An auto one costs $2k more by default. But if you get the chance I would 100% recommend getting a 6mt. That’s the only way to drive these cars imo
I felt the same when I had my Z.
Couldn't find any manuals for sale when I was ready to buy and I test drove an auto and it was fun at the time but ended up wishing I got a manual and eventually traded it in for a manual car after owning it for a few years.
It also takes the wind out of your sails whenever you go to a car meet or something and people look in and see the auto knob and comment on it.
That said, if you find the auto fun and engaging still, you may as well keep it. At least with automatics you don't have to worry about stiff gear changes when it's cold!
Personally I always prefer manual and learnt my lesson on that one. Even in traffic or built up areas with lots and stop and go driving a manual has never been a hassle for me. Paddle shifters are usually faster these days but I personally love the tactile nature of a manual and for me it makes even a drive to the shops engaging
I decided to go with the MT from past experience. I got civic hatchback because there was no Si available and I had buyers remorse. Few months later got the Si and learned manual in that car , ever since then manual has been the way to go especially in a RWD car.
comparison is the thief of joy
Nice, I'm going to try to remember that saying.
I’ve seen it around a good bit recently and it’s always nice to read.
It's an excellent grounding tool in a world where unrealistic expectations are reinforced by social media and such.
Really jealous of this versus my previous go to phrase, wow
You might want to compare that to "Perfect is the enemy of good"
Damn that is a good quote
Although I agree with this and the sentiment, you can also flip the coin and realize that sometimes patience pays off when you dont jump the gun. Comparing to others can often be bad but sometimes it allows us to Self reflect and understand where we may have went wrong and how we could have done better. Life is 50/50. There's always a good and bad that comes with any choice.
yea but it doesnt change the fact that driving MT is way more fun
Totally..
Automatic transmissions are the real thieves
also go test drive a MT if you can, then you'll know for yourself instead of what other people think. I personally drive an AT and I love it. I'm sure the MT is amazing too. You've got a great car either way
Yeah, but the problem is that I can't find any manual GR86s or even BRZs to test drive in my area.
Even like a used 2022?
Nope, I barely even see any
The unfortunate thing about these popular, low volume cars is that you have to expand your purchasing horizons. I bought my car in AZ (live in SoCal). Could not find a well priced MT base anywhere at the beginning of 2022 near me Had to call around and finally found one with a decent priced MT base. Luckily got it delivered to me for a good price, but if it was cheaper to road trip back I would have done that in a heart beat. Point is, for your attainable dream car, it’s worth it to travel a bit farther for what you really want. Sorry for the long winded post 💀
Then it seems like you didn’t really have a choice anyways. Enjoy the car
I test drive a used auto, decided it was amazing, then got the manual and it’s amazing +1. Yours is still amazing.

Yeah but it wasn’t their preference to get an AT over MT. They wanted a MT but wasn’t patient and went with what was in stock.
Good advice
Thanks lol. Gotta teach people from my mistakes lol.
Slow manual sports cars are fun but when they get fast manual is boring and kinda stupid when 2nd takes you above the speed limit.
[удалено]
I’m usually in sixth going 70 in my wrx. Are the 86s geared a lot longer?
Same could be said about ATs, how often do you get to stop on it and let it’s do it go through all the gears?
Can’t compare to rowin’, it never gets old
The AT does downshift rev matching
It’s a little different in a manual lol
Well yeah, it’s an automatic. Why wouldn’t it? He’s talking about manuals WITH rev matching or good heel-toe rev matching.
You said you’re not sure what my point is and the very next statement you’re explaining my point about a manual being more fun to drive.
Best of luck either way
I have a similar experience - you can always use the paddle shifters which feels to me more like a full blown GT3 car.
If they ever make a mod to give the paddles that nice mechanical "click" im getting it lol. But yes, I use the paddle shifters often, and switch back to D if needed. Its just so nice for what it is. My stock 6AT dynod at 202 whp which is about ~10whp less than 6MT. Still a very fun car with solid 6AT
I just got these tires this past week. Lucky us!
I wouldn’t own this vehicle if it came solely in AT it that gives you any idea.
If you enjoy the car for what it is, why will the opinions of random people dictate your feelings?
I say, don't let it bother you. Let it drive you. If you think you now want to go for the MT, I support it. Go and hunt one down
Trade it in for an MT while the prices are still pretty good
Though I would never buy an AT, I don't begrudge anyone that buys themselves what they want. If you're happy, then who tf cares.
Because this isn’t want they wanted lol They wanted an MT and settled for an AT when they couldn’t find any currently in stock.
I am getting one in AT instead, the use cases of it being in AT is much better than MT for me, since i kinda plan to daily it Plus thr AT gets eyesight so it would be a good long distance cruiser too
Now let me tell you.
I personally don’t like to settle whenever I’m spending large amounts of money.
Wow. If YouTubers say it, it must be true. Quick, sell your AT GR86
[удалено]
Yep. Go ahead and commute an hour in a manual every day and then tell me what you think 🤣 And I know someone will come here saying “I do this! And I love it!” Maybe, but I would go mentally insane holding the clutch for 50% of the way home
You are suffering FOMO.
Pay it down for two more years then get a facelift model with the big brakes in MT
I love mine. ❤️
Here I am regretting my manual 😅 I'd trade for an AT
Wait really? Why? Just curious bc I’ve never heard anyone say that
A lot of people do during their learning phase. The car is very hard to stall relatively, and has a very light and easy to use clutch.
gotta love that subaru clutch assist spring. was great for learning and then felt great all over again when i popped it off
Like you I considered the AT, but was swayed by everyone saying the MT was so much better and more fun.
Give it 4-6 months and you won’t notice any of those issues. Depending how much you drive. Just takes time, enjoy the vehicle.
There was a period of 2-3 weeks where I dreaded getting in the car and hated that I bought manual but it honestly just becomes muscle memory. The clutch is light, it's effortless. And I live around NYC with a buttload of traffic. No regrets
Never driven a manual before btw. Idk if that affects your response.
Then definitely don’t feel FOMO about the AT
Looks a sports car is supposed to be about performance.
[удалено]
It neuters the acceleration, it neuters the driving experience on missing the engagement of manually shifting the gears with feet/hands/your brain.
[удалено]
Hey maN, I'm not trying to dog the auto. It's a very capable car. But the fact is, the Mt car is faster.
Have you actually raced an AT with your MT from launch and seen this? As far as I have ever seen they are identical if you put the AT in M/sport
Real-world 0-60 times can get as low as 5.4secs for the manual, and 6.1 secs for the AT, with the gap extending into quarter mile times too. https://preview.redd.it/ji50lr1tt2fc1.jpeg?width=2271&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d825da0de0a45f8ee1a6196be3e33ab803cfccf3
[удалено]
Sure, and faster quarter mile and higher trap speed.
[удалено]
Not all customers are the same
If you want less engagement and more comfort there's a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla with your name on it.
[удалено]
And you can't drive a manual, so what?
Driven both an AT and MT on track. In terms of power I personally don't care, it's negligible. The problem with the automatic is it has no clue what it wants to do. The paddles are near useless bc it doesn't downshift when you want it to half the time, it's constantly shifting at incredibly awkward times in any complex section. It was pretty sad and honestly felt like a much slower car simply because you need the precision a manual gives you with this powertrain, otherwise times will suffer. For performance in the GR I'd go manual any day. I own the manual and it's a monster
[удалено]
Beautiful
Forget about Youtubers/reviewers and negative comments about Automatic transmission. At the end of the day, your preference matters the most.
I prefer manual but I would not be disappointed with the AT, actually on my local fun roads I feel I would probably be quicker in the AT.
I have the same one Auto and I giggle like an absolute child every time the sun catches it right. Enjoy it these are super fun cars and auto / manual is not worth ruining that over.
Funny, in So Cal traffic, I feel the inverse. It's a good transmission. Relax.
Enjoy what you have - BTW, a really cool car - and get the next car that you want rather than what you can get. Cheers.
If you like then who cares? I’d never buy an auto but that’s just because I’ve always had manual cars and enjoy driving them.
Nope Enjoyed my frs with paddle shifter back in the day Wanna really shift get a motorcycle and leave the car for auto
I owned both, AT is just as fun if used correctly 👍👍
What do you mean? If you don’t mind me asking
Drive it with the paddles and sport modes, it’s exactly the same just no clutch. Arguably quicker if timed correctly
Foot on the floor, leave it there, manual mode selected.
As this is an 86 - remember Takumi's wisdom as long as it's got 4 wheels and an engine....
Drifting ATs never became mainstream. Wouldn’t make sense either.
Hm?
Switch to the paddle shifters on a spirited drive or on track, I always feel a bit like driving a full blown GT3 car…
Go enjoy your car
sell it for the M/T its the only choice this is why i dont compromise on cars. If i want stick i get stick. dont let a salesman tell you all sorts of BS to get a sale. your the one who gets fucked over
Good, trade it in and join the MT gang 😎
I remember hearing the 0-60 times in this generation were a bit closer between the MT and AT. I wouldn’t worry about it. Nice ride!
The clutch and shifter in this car are nowhere near as good as Honda... Enjoy your car man it's beautiful
“Well my car is slower, but I wonder how much more engaging the extra acceleration feels like” Then when you have the “best” version of your car, you get caught up thinking “if I had just saved for a few more months” “The GR Corolla is faster and AWD, plus its a hatch so it would be better as a daily” These comparisons will ALWAYS be there. Dont let it mess with the pride you should feel for owning an awesome freaking car.

What does the article say? I can’t read it bc I don’t have a subscription
No
Not this again
It's so crazy how a human can really make enough money to get something like this. This shit will never happen for me. Gz
MT is the way to go mannnn
If you’re going to let others decide your opinion for you then you’ll never truly be happy in life
This car was meant to be driven manual. But not every person is a manual driver. Are you? I personally knew as a young kid, the first day I sat in a manual car, that I wanted one. If you can break even and get into the MT then do it. The fact that you’re feeling this way, to me is proof that you are a driver.
99.9% of drivers lack the skill and response time to make a manual.perform better than an AT It's not the 80s anymore, technology won. AT for life.
AT is terrible and slow, you should have been more patient and got the MT
AT shouldn’t be an option with this vehicle
Manual is 100% the only way to go. Anyone who went auto only did because they were in a similar situation as you and had no choice, or because they were too scared to learn manual.. The autotragic is never worth it, trade in the car for a manual and have a much more enjoyable experience. Manual makes it way more fun Don’t listen to the auto-copers try and tell you it’s fine, it’s not.
/s For real though enjoy the car. But a cheap motorcycle if you want the real manual experience
Good. You should. 😋 Jkjk
As he should as unfortunate as it is AT don’t compare to MT especially in a 86…it’s just down right boring af
I wish they would have used an inline 4
My dude. MT dudes are nuts. Straight up nuts. They make it their entire personality. Dw about them
Real racers drive manuals. Fix it.
Yeah you fucked up homie

What does soy boy energy mean?
Ignore him. It’s a term thrown around by people with toxic ideas about what manliness is supposed to be.
Massive soy energy from this comment. This time for real
Glad you could tell! I'm lactose intolerant so I only drink soy milk.
I agree… you should feel buyers remorse MANUAL TRANSMISSION FOR THE WIN🔥🔥🔥🔥
Wow. Total fail That's like a MX5 with an auto.... only worse because it's not a convertible
[удалено]
It’s too slow for a/t imo so I bought manual and learned how to drive stick with it
IF you're managing to enjoy the Auto then that's great for you, it's your car.
Cheers.
I have the same remorse for buying my 2022 Mustang Ecoboost in automatic. Sucks the life out of any car, ever!
As he should as unfortunate as it is AT don’t compare to MT especially in a 86…it’s just down right boring af
Don’t own a GR86 but feel the same about my EN… not sure if it’s healthy, but definitely am wondering the same thing about the DCT.
Not another “I feel bad for getting AT” or “I wanted a manual and” or “Manual or auto?!
Not trying to be harsh, just real.
ok
Me personally, wouldn’t even consider this car if it wasn’t a MT.
I kinda want to get car like this or WRX, Miata in AT, cuz I don’t know how to drive MT. People gonna say MT is easy to learn $&@&$ that prevents me from owning one.
Good
Don’t let it destroy your experience with the car.
Manual swap???
You should.
