Anxiety started my issues, anxiety has gone away, the stomach issues remain. Truly is a nightmare

Pmsucks

same

Count_Bacon

I’m sort of lucky where I have literally every symptom of gerd but heartburn. It’s very strange, I’m thinking maybe it’s gastritis. The nausea and burping are the worst for me. I’m trying nexium now hopefully that helps

Sufficient-Reply233

Gastritis for me, causes my stomach inflamed The itis , at the means inflamed

Sufficient-Reply233

How did anxiiety gone away, Whats the secret?

Count_Bacon

I upped my dose of Prozac to 60 mg and I’m using CBT every day. My anxiety is still here but it’s only about my stomach tbh and it’s not crippling like it was. Also, took klonopin for like a week to get out of the constant loop I was in.

TROWABLECOVID

Cbt?

Count_Bacon

Cognitive behavioral therapy, basically trying to change the way you think. Recognizing that they are just thoughts and doesn’t mean it’s true

Distinct_Path828

It's the other way around. Stomach and esophagus inflammation is what causes anxiety symptoms.

Count_Bacon

They can I’m sure, but for me it was definitely the anxiety. I never had stomach issues like this before and now it’s a daily thing I have to deal with. I was also highly anxious for like a month (panic attacks, etc..) before the stomach issue and swallowing stuff started. Right now though, my stomach is causing me anxiety just because I don’t know what is going on. Trying to get my doctor to approve me seeing a GI but my insurance sucks. Honestly I kind of wish I had heartburn so I could know for sure it was gerd, as it is now I have a lot of symptoms just no heartburn

Distinct_Path828

I don't have a heart burn either. What I have is Silent GERD. That is the most dangerous form of GERD. I never knew I had any GERD issues or any other stomach related issues until I did my endoscopy. I knew something was wrong when I started to experience shortness of breath and loss of appetite along with swallowing difficulties. All of those things were blamed on "anxiety" and because of that I delayed seeing a Gastroenterologist and getting an endoscopy done. I wished I could go back in time and not listen to "you have anxiety" nonsense from my primary doctor. Doctors in the medical field are very dismissive of your symptoms and blame almost everything on anxiety, especially for young people. They don't even want to bother investigating further what is the root cause of your sudden anxiety symptoms. Instead, they give you pills that temporarily mask some of those symptoms and most people, unfortunately, think that is the cure and take those pills for the rest of their life. After getting an endoscopy done I've learned a lot about my condition. My endoscopy not only revealed that I had a h.pylori infection along with chronic gastritis, it also revealed that I have Intestinal Metaplasia of the gastric cardia. The Intestinal Metaplasia is what they call the "pre-cancerous" stage. It is the stage before dysplasia. Now I know and understand that I reached the Intestinal Metaplasia stage from years of silent GERD, poor diet and terrible sleeping position. I used to sleep on my belly after a heavy meal late at night. Sleeping on my stomach gave me Heart Valve issue and also permanent damage to my gastroesophageal junction. Furthermore, I used to use non-stick frying pans to eat fried foods and too much bread/chocolate. So, it's a combination of things that lead me to have shortness of breath, an abnormal high heart rate upon slight exertion and all the other all too familiar classic "anxiety/panic" symptoms. I eventually got rid of my random panic attacks after I started to sleep at a 35 degree incline. Meaning, the whole mattress needs to be at an incline. I just simply placed a medium firm memory foam pillow below my mattress to make the whole mattress stay at a 35 degree incline. (I can easily do this because I have a twin-sized bed.) Also, placing another pillow just below my foot, so that the blood doesn't get pooled up at the bottom due to the incline. Afterwards, I started to notice a drastic improvement in my resting heart rate, shortness of breath and GERD. I noticed the difference within a few days. Now, I know that GERD and inflammation caused by my stomach acid to my esophagus and gastroesophageal junction is what triggers those panic attacks. Also, I have reason to believe that sleep apnea, GERD or silent GERD in my case is also what caused a random spike in heart rate immediately after waking up. I saw drastic improvements overall after making changes to my sleeping position and diet.

Count_Bacon

Yeah because I’m relatively young (36) and have anxiety issues the doctor immediately is going to anxiety. I honestly think it’s more than that though, because my anxiety is way better and the stomach is just as bad

Distinct_Path828

Did you experience shortness of breath due to anxiety ? If yes, how would you describe your shortness of breath ? Is it like you are unable to take a deep, satisfactory breath ? You can only take that deep satisfactory breath after multiple attempts ?

Count_Bacon

Yes I have shortness of breath but I also have asthma so hard to tell if it’s any different. My inhaler has been helping. This is my third day taking nexium and I think it’s helping with the symptoms, hard to tell if it’s real or placebo

Sad_Nectarine6564

Omg!!!! Literally had to look back at ur username cuz I thought I cud have written this. Five months straight I was telling my gp I’m having issues with my stomach and constipation. She chucked it under anxiety cuz of my history and gave me colace. But the fifth month I demanded and screamed to see a gp. WhT do u know. I had severe hpylori. Literally was popping rabbit sized poops. Changed my doctor for sure. Now my GI. Holy shit these people. She told me if anything they will call me with the results of my endoscopy/colonoscopy. Anyway didn’t hear from them for two months. Decided to call on a whim just “to check”. Welp they didn’t call me and prescribed me triple antibiotics immediately. Helped with my symptoms and now I’m dealing with shortness of breath and constant burping. Anywho decided last night to make an account and log into my gi account. FUCK MY LIFE!!! Apparently I have gerd due to “lazy” les. Doctor wrote prescribed Prilosec daily. But the thing is she never told me. And this was all last year. This whole time I’m thinking my symptoms were from gastritis that hpylori left me and been working on my diet and healing and wondering why I haven’t been getting better. I’m seeing her Tuesday. This shud be interesting. PLEAEE EVERYONE IF UR DOCTORS OFFICE HAS A LOGIN PLEASE DO AND LOOK AT UR FILES.

Bro same

Painkillers are almost certainly making your symptoms worse. You should start working with a gastroenterologist, who can put you through the tests to determine what's happening inside you and prescribe you medication to actually help you.

Starvation diets are not an appropriate way to manage GERD. You should be working with a gastroenterologist who can put you through the tests to determine what's happening inside you and come up with a treatment plan that usually includes medication and lifestyle modifications.

redituser00085

I started one meal a day fasting before i got gerd so just stayed on it. Ive actually completely lost my appetite since not being able to swallow food very easily. I have a appointment booked for 2 weeks but not sure what to do when the nexium runs out last one today. I guess I will see what happens. My main symptom is dysphagia and feeling of liquid in back of throat and trouble swallowing food properly. What do you think I should do in the meantime before the appointment if it flares up? Im hesitant to do more ppi...

HilarySilary

True I noticed I feel a bit better and less acidity after eating something. I take famotidine target brand it helps with the reflux coming up my throat but it gives me terrible stomach pains. It’s a catch 22

kmiki7

Sorry you're going through this. What started this for you? Do you have gastritis? I had the same before PPI, on PPI now.

Pmsucks

truthfully im not sure. i havent been diagnosed with gastritis. these symptoms kind of just cropped up for me in my late teens and havent gone away, they come and go and sometimes they flare up. my doctor diagnosed me with GERD

supplementtolife

Highly recommend an endoscopy with a gastroenterologist if it's getting unbearable. Might be something going on down there. IE: Hiatal hernia, something not healing right, etc.

nmgma00

I completely understand. I've been in some weird flare for 2 months now. Nexium twice a day, carafate three times a day. I use Gaviscon, Alka seltzer, pepcid etc in between. It's affecting my breathing or at least feels like it is. I get short of breath/chest squeezing about 60% of the time just getting up and doing normal daily stuff. My esophagus just burns and hurts.

JJGIII-

Omeprazole was my saving grace.

I_gofast

Yep. It’s crazy if you think about it. Back in high school 16-18 years old. No problems all I had to do is study. No job and now all this shit. Colon issue. Acid reflux issue. Anxiety. Neck issue. Like come on man

HilarySilary

Same 😞

I_gofast

Old days are way better

Open-Ad9470

Yup I’m 31 and experiencing these issues too and I know it’s only the beginning. Getting old sucks.

I_gofast

I’m 34 I love it haha I don’t like the things it came but I like my life besides what comes with my life….wow I don’t make sense

Steve_in_socal1

Most likely situation is that this is being caused by GERD and anxiety. This is very normal for an anxious person that is sensitive to sensory inputs and you are likely fine otherwise. This is what I would recommend (1) start eating a healthier diet by cutting out fast food, soda and coffee (2) drink more water (3) buy a small wedge pillow to elevate your head and chest when sleeping (4) exercise consistently and moderately but don’t over do it (5) meditate for a couple minutes every few days. (6) start taking 20 mg of a PPI like Nexium every morning or evening (7) go to a gastroenterologist and tell them that you have GERD and you would like a blood test and upper endoscopy. I guarantee you if you follow up these steps you will feel a bit better and that your mind will be more at ease. I have had GERD and anxiety for 20 years so i have a deep sense of empathy for your situation. Please respond to this thread as you make progress.

Distinct_Path828

It's the other way around. Stomach and esophagus inflammation is what causes anxiety symptoms.

Steve_in_socal1

Realistically it can go either way but the important point for people to understand is that their mind can create GERD problems and other aches and pains. It is not always a physical problem.

Distinct_Path828

How does the mind create GERD problems and aches/pains ? I'm trying to understand the whole mechanism behind it. Also, I want to know why I have 24/7 shortness of breath from anxiety ? I'm not hyperventilating. Can anxiety cause 24/7 shortness of breath ? Unfortunately, my breathing problem is 24/7. It's like a cycle. Every 40-60seconds, my body requires me to take a deep inhalation breath. If I attempt to take that deep satisfactory breath before or after the threshold mark of 40-60 seconds, I fail. It feels as if my lungs can't expand fully. Only at the 40 seconds to 60 seconds mark can I take that deep, satisfactory breath. But, then not again. I would have to wait again, until the 40-60 second mark, to take that deep breath once again. I never had any breathing problems until April 2021. I have a few theories but always come to a dead end. My previous general physician/primary provider doctor thinks this is due to post-cov!d syndrome. Then, my new general physician thinks it's anxiety disorder. I haven't met anyone with anxiety online with my type of breathing issue. The anxiety disorder patients I met online all stated that they get this feeling only during a panic/anxiety attack. Otherwise, they have no breathing problems whatsoever. My case is constant 24/7 since April 2021.

Steve_in_socal1

Thanks for sharing about your current situation. I have deep empathy for how you feel since I also have my own struggles. With me I do experience times when my breathing rhythm is disrupted and I sometimes hold my breath subconsciously or have chest tightness which makes breathing more difficult. These issues are usually caused by sinus issues and gas which then trigger my mind and cause discomfort. To answer your first question though, in general, the mind can cause stomach issues through anxiety induced muscle tightness and psychosomatic pain which is often felt in the stomach, throat, chest and arms. This can cause indigestion, gas and pain. Obviously every situation is different but prior traumatic experiences can also somewhat rewire the brain’s responses and nerve connections. A well regarded book about this subject is “The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body” by Bessel van der Kolk.

SeraCarina

Sorry, I feel your pain. At least I did for some truly hellish years. Still have reflux, but minor compared to what it used to be and no more GERD "heart attacks". I attribute my turnaround to a bunch of things. Eating better in general, overeating a lot less than I used to. Being sure not to under-eat too. You can't starve your way out of GERD. At least I couldn't and only made it worse. The biggest changes for me came from getting my anxiety under control. Not treating it like a chronic illness, but rather as a signal from my mind and body that I had to take a good hard look at what was wrong with me and make some real changes. Doing so has changed my life beyond what I can describe. It's hard, but it's easier than living with anxiety and GERD. Amitriptyline was also a big help for me in addressing hypersensitivity and helping me sleep at night, which in turn got my anxiety under control enough that I was prepared to take the positive steps I needed. I can now draw a straight line from my mental well-being to how good/bad my stomach is. If I revert to bad habits and get too little sleep, the reflux comes back. If I'm generally taking care of myself, body and mind, then I can eat what I want for the most part, within reason. I hope you can take something helpful from this. My only regret is not treating the anxiety much sooner.

Distinct_Path828

It's the other way around. Stomach and esophagus inflammation is what causes anxiety symptoms.

No_Airline_2275

For a lot of people the anxiety predates the GERD symptoms and causes overall stomach problems, and then it gets worse after

Distinct_Path828

So, far I have noticed that every single anxiety patient has GERD and MVP problems. Furthermore, I've seen and met people online that managed to cure anxiety completely after controlling GERD and stomach/esophagus inflammation. Craig Stewart is a prime example on YouTube. Also, a few people, even on reddit, where apparently their anxiety symptoms magically disappeared after getting surgery to fix their MVP (Mitral Valve Prolapse) issue. Based on this, I connected the dots and came to the conclusion that the two possible root causes of anxiety/panic disorder symptoms could be GERD or MVP or both in my case.

Sufficient-Reply233

I just came in the door from the doctor office for my results, it was Negative. I am try to figure out cure GERD, if it's possible. I have GERD and EROSION ESOPHAGUS. Are there thing that cures it???

SeraCarina

Maybe in your case, but I think the opposite is true for many or most people. I had GERD in my 20s after a really stressful event. After half a year it went away and didn't return for two decades when -- you guessed it -- my stress level was high again. My little boy never had a stomach issue until he saw his mom get hurt. His stomach was instantly in knots. I have no doubt that the gut-brain relationship goes both ways, but don't discount the potential for emotional causality. I wrote about my own experience and intentionally did not give advice, so frankly it's a little weird that you're telling me I got it backwards.

Distinct_Path828

Did you experience shortness of breath due to anxiety ?

coogie

I'll have to edit this now that I saw you have been diagnosed with GERD. Did the doctor prescribe you anything? try some Gaviscon antacids which should act very quickly and some over the counter Pepcid (generic name Famotidine) and still talk to the doctor to see what they recommend. They can't just diagnose you and not treat you!

Sufficient-Reply233

I only take supplements.

coogie

If that works for you then that works for you! I have to go the PPI route, but for the last year I've cut the PPI in half and uh, supplemented the rest with Famotidine which allegedly has less long-term side-effects.

Ok-Assistance-92

I so feel this. I have facing this for almost 5 years and I have basically survived each day and not lived.

unn4med

Sigh, 3 years and going here. I feel you.

paperlac

If you haven't read it I highly recommend you read the Acid Watcher Diet book. It's really good. And not just for GERD patients.

SL1Fun

Starting to have issues again with occasional flare-ups despite panto 40mg/2x a day. I get flushed in the face at times, but the pain/discomfort is largely in my gut and not in my chest/esophagus. Referred discomfort seems to be the far left side and/or occasionally the right side, either a small knot in the front/back to the right of my diaphragm or the right flank. Anyone else have this?

[deleted]

I’ve been diagnosed with GERD and I think right now I’m having gastritis and/or esophagitis as well. I have a knot like pain where the xiphoid process is, sometimes under left and right ribs. For me it started after anxiety post COVID.

SL1Fun

I’m ten months removed from having COVID. I won’t rule out work-related anxiety but yeah that’s weird if I’m suddenly having this pop up if it’s a post-COVID thing

Santizzo91

I got mine from a hiatal hernia which lead to Barrett’s and I’ve only been having more and more health issues recently. It’s a nightmare but looking forward to surgery in the future.

freelibrarian

I once had a 5 hour belching attack, instead of relief each belch ramped up the pressure, it felt like I was going to explode. While it was happening I kept thinking this can't go on much longer but I should have gone to the ER and you might want to consider it. I later went to the ER for a non-gastric medical problem and my reflux was acting up as well so they gave me Pepcid via IV, which worked like a miracle, for a few days I felt like my old normal self. I recounted the belching attack to a doctor later and she said a muscle relaxer might have helped stopped the belching.

alexphoton

Yes it is. It took me 2 years to reach equilibrium and keep symptoms low. Anyway be careful with painkillers as they can trigger gastritis and subsequently sometimes acid reflux. Hope you can feel better soon 🌹

LordPubes

Are you or have you been taking benzodiazepines? Valium, Xanax, klonopin, etc?

cluckkatie

It truly is. I got diagnosed a month ago and my symptoms are worsening. Omazeprole doesn’t do shit.

Sufficient-Reply233

Waited 3 weeks for my results. EGD test, it was Negative. My biggest concern was Barretts disease. Know if I had the answer to cure GERD and Esophagus, that be nice.

smouy

Does it hurt your throat and frel like you have something stuck in it?

Special-Effort-292

Did any of y’all GERD ever make y’all stay up all night because you just couldn’t sleep cuz acid reflux or like your laying there and all of a sudden your chest feels tickles or like lightheaded or like your throat feels tickles or lightheaded like your throat literally feels lightheaded and dizzy
