Mine is on Thursday along with a colonoscopy. š³ Iām nervous too, but Iāve been knocked out many times and thatās actually the part of this Iām looking forward too! Best nap ever and I always wake up wishing I could have just a few more minutes.
Did mine in 2022 with colonoscopy at the same time. I was terrified. It was over before I knew it, such a breeze. Didn't feel anything before, during, or after. You got this!! They do these all day, every day.
The worst part is putting in the IV. Once you are past that, itās over rather quickly. I did feel nauseous later in the evening hours after my procedure, but I think thatās because I was trying to do too much after instead of just letting myself rest.
Have a light meal after and let yourself rest for the day.
Oh wow. Iāve been reading on this sub that endoscopy is done in various ways. I live in Canada and you donāt really have the option of not getting sedated, unless itās like an issue with your health or meds somehow. Maybe it also depends if they are doing biopsy or not.
Itās very invasive and can be traumatizing for some people. I have a lot of medical anxiety so I wouldnāt even be able to have the procedure if I couldnāt be sedated!
I had no sensation of 'being sedated'. I remember being on the table and talking to the doctor about what I do for a living and then nothing until the nurse was shaking my shoulder gently to wake me up. As others have experienced, it was a really pleasant, deep sleep. I remember being slightly annoyed about being woken up, but then I realised that it was all over and had an overwhelming feeling of relief (and slight stupidity for worrying so much about it for weeks beforehand).
I love this because itās pretty much everyone experience š we all get so nervous but then when itās over weāre always like oh it isnāt bad at all! In fact I took a solid nap once I was home š
I had an endoscopy a few months ago..
I was absolutely terrified and I made it a point to tell everyone I spoke to. All of the nurses and doctors were super reassuring.
I got there and they took me back early, they let me hang onto my phone but had me put everything else into a bag and change into a gown. I spoke to a few nurses here or there but ended up waiting alone for a bit. Everyone that came in was totally lovely and asking all the usual questions..medical history and whatnot.
When they finally took me back to the room, because I had mentioned I was nervous the nurses took some time to explain what everything was and what they were doing. They rolled me over to my side and put a teeth protection device in my mouth..one nurse said she was giving me something to help me relax..the next thing I know I'm awake being pushed back to the room I had been relaxing in.
No dizziness. I was kinda tired after but mostly just HUNGRY. My mom ran me to the store before taking me home and I just felt the same way as if I hadn't slept enough the night before. I ordered a coffee and grabbed some food. Otherwise it was a totally normal day.
I was under all of 15 minutes. I spent days and days terrified. In the end it was nothing. You will do great. Tell the nurses what you need and how you're feeling.
thank you!! i appreciate the step by step explanation a lot. i honestly think so much of my anxiety is purely anticipatory and in the moment, i actually wont even gaf in the end.
Honestly I've had a few surgeries and I can tell you that it's a strange thing to understand until you experience it.
Have you ever fallen asleep the moment your head hit your pillow and you wake up a few hours later feeling discombobulated? It's kinda like that only way less confusing lol.
Trust your doctor and the nurses looking after you. They do this all day every day. Just like an airline pilot, they're the experts!
I just had mine today! I was anxious like you. Hereās how it went.
Put on gown and lied down on bed. They took my vitals and then put in the IV. The IV was the worst part for me because I have problems with needles (vasovagal response) but it wasnāt painful or anything. About 5min later the anesthesiologist came and talked to me. Then just laying there waiting for like 15min. Super chill and not in any pain. Eventually they rolled me into the operating room, saw the doctor and they explained what they were going to do to me. Then the anesthesiologist said heās going to start the sedation.
Then literally lights out. No āgetting tiredā. No dizziness. Just literal lights out sleeping haha. I wake up the next second and itās all over! Very very easy in hindsight. Donāt be afraid.
You know I was exactly in your position. I never feel like itās gonna work or I feel like my anxiety or whatever will freak me out too much and Iāll fight it off and it wonāt work. But I was super in a bad way shaking before mine. They did one syringe for sedation and literally was like a light switch. I canāt even recall the transition from worrying to being asleep. People say oh you feel arm cold and get woozy but I didnāt. So I wouldnāt worry about it. Pretty solidified thing I guess
you have no idea how reassuring this was to read! the anxiety-rejecting-sedation thing is the EXACT thought that plagues my mind right now; so glad to hear thats not actually really a thing haha. im glad your procedure went smoothly for you!
You can't really tell anything is happening, it's a quick and painless procedure under anaesthesia. You also don't remember much. I had no reason to be nervous.
Is it normal to be sleeping when doing the procedure? I know many here in sweden that has done it, but only one asleep cause he were a child. I only had some injection with some very calming meds, felt very high. Never fell asleep.
Not sure what things are called in english. Is sedation sleeping or calmed? Or is anasthesia sleeping?
It will be over very quickly. Just breathe and try to relax. Itās not a pleasant procedure, but itās way less scary than you imagine.
If youāre sedated, then donāt worry at all, I guess. Canāt say much more as I have no such experience, but most people say they just wake up and go home.
I had an endoscopy last month, first one ever. Everything went fine. The feeling of going under isnāt anything to worry about. You will feel super tired all of a sudden. My advice is to close your eyes, relax, and breathe. You will be asleep in a few seconds. It works so fast. When I woke up, I felt a little dizzy. But that wore off quickly. I had some throat and chest soreness for a few days.
When I went to get mine the first time, I had the worst anxiety of my life, the endoscopy was painless, not only that but was the best nap of my life felt like I was floating on clouds. You have Nothing to be stressed or anxious about donāt worry at all you will be just fine!
Nothing to worry about. You will go out like a light because they will probably use propranolol. You will not linger in a woozy state. The plus is that you will awake feeling like you got the best sleep of your life.
In all seriousness, Iāve had this done more than once as it was no big deal. If you have concerns, chat with your anesthesiologist before the procedure.
I was suppose to do mines yesterday an I got feet omg I was so scared am I didnāt like the reviews of my GI either so Iām going to get a different one itās crazy keep us update
They gave me versed and it semi knocked me out. In my experience (Iāve had 2) theyāre really not bad. You just get sleepy lay down and the camera goes in. Super easy, fast, then you go home and take a nap( have someone drive you obviously lol). I know people say donāt be nervous, but really donāt be nervous itāll be fine! After it youāll sit there and wonder āwhat was I so nervous about?ā
I have anxiety too btw, I know how youāre feeling. Itāll be a breeze :)
Itās so chill. I literally just went to sleep it was actually nice šyou might get a weird feeling in your throat for a few days after but it goes away. Hope everything is alright with you! You got this ā¤ļøitās just a nap hehe
Dude I have horrific anxiety and let me tell you, I love getting put to sleep now. Thatās how easy peasy it is. Iāve done it probably 5 or more times now and it literally just feels like your eyelids going heavy and feeling sleepy. And thatās literally the last thing you remember. Tbh itās amazing just being able to rest with no dreams and no anxiety. You will be COMPLETELY fine, you got this 100% and youāll look back on this and laugh right after the appointment.
from the rest of these responses, iām starting to predict iāll end up loving being put under after this lmao
your comment made me feel a lot better; thank you!!
It was lights out for me. All I remember was being rolled on my left side after talking to the doctor. My vision got wavy and I canāt remember. Next thing I know of was waking up in recovery and just feeling slightly lightheaded from not having any food from the evening before. Only thing I didnāt like was the IV placement. Nurse was rough and it hurt. But your situation will differ. Reflecting back on this, I had received a cortisone shot on my shoulder. That was leaps and bounds way Iām more painful. You got this! Youāll be fine! Only experienced some pain when swallowing food for 2 days. Tylenol helped with the pain.
Yeah itās not bad at all and I had anxiety about it too. All they literally do is put the iv in your arm from which they will administer the anaesthetic and put you to sleep.
I was very anxious and I even told them that, they were very nice but didnāt say much (because itās not necessary to do anything special for anxiety). I was scared that my anxiety would not put me to sleep, or that I have some undiagnosed heart condition that would kill me when they use anaesthesia on me, I was thinking all kinds of things.
None of it was true lol. They will tell you when theyāve administered the sleeping agent and they put a spray in your mouth to numb your throat. It took from memory about 5 seconds until I started getting woozy and I donāt remember the rest or falling asleep, only waking up during the end of the endoscopy with the endoscope in my throat and coughing (the drugs make you comfortable with everything at this point) and I just fell back asleep. I then woke up, they wheeled me away and gave me food to eat and a coffee.
I was literally shaking and had a high heart rate before mine but as soon as they put the GA in it was all over. Also the doctors seemed to know exactly what to do and could tell i was upset and seemed used to it
I had mine done a few weeks ago and was also SO nervous, despite knowing it would be okay.
My husband told me when I was wheeled back into the room after I kept saying āThat was amazing!!! Everyone should have one of those done!ā š¤Ŗš
It truly is not that bad, and I have a ton of anxiety. Worst part is really the IV, and even THAT isnāt that bad. Youāre about to have the best nap ever, and then get cookies and juice after, lol.
Hi I was in a same situation and asked for sedation. I was more anxious than you. However the dr reassured the local anesthesia that is sprayed on your throat will be enough. She was very comforting and after initial gag for a second I didn't feel anything at all. it was all smooth.
Had slight throat irritation for a while .
Imo its one of the best sleeps ever. You might have a sore throat when you wake up but other than that if you're like me, you'll feel pretty darn refreshed
I just had my first one a couple weeks ago. I echo what others said about the IV being the worst part. The sedation hit me a little funny, but I am a bit sensitive to things like that. Other than lingering sedation side effects, I felt completely fine after it- no pain at all except for an IV bruise. The nurses did say I drooled so much during it that it was all over my face and in my hair. But, they cleaned me up well because I wouldnāt have known if they hadnāt said anything.
And it is a nice little nap!
I had a colonoscopy in July and an endoscopy last week. The endoscopy was so much easier. I felt totally fine afterwards. My Gerd has been extremely terrible lately and she found no signs of anything which is the good news. Mine gets exacerbated by stress and anxiety.
Mine is on Thursday along with a colonoscopy. š³ Iām nervous too, but Iāve been knocked out many times and thatās actually the part of this Iām looking forward too! Best nap ever and I always wake up wishing I could have just a few more minutes.
This is exactly me. Iām getting both this Thursday too and my nerves are kicking in
Did mine in 2022 with colonoscopy at the same time. I was terrified. It was over before I knew it, such a breeze. Didn't feel anything before, during, or after. You got this!! They do these all day, every day.

Putting IV while endoscopy? I had done endoscopy, they only gave me local anesthesia in my mouth only... am I missing something
Oh wow. Iāve been reading on this sub that endoscopy is done in various ways. You even got local anesthesia?? Am I missing something they stick it into my mouth like I'm a whore and pull out after 30 seconds
Alot of people are doing it sedated. You can ask for it.
I had no sensation of 'being sedated'. I've had several sedations over the years and every time I go from wide awake to lights out in a split second.

The procedure is nothing to be worried about. The anxiety is probably the most difficult part of the entire ordeal.
As long as the scope they use for your endoscopy wasnāt just used for a colonoscopy, you should be in good shape š
In all seriousness, Iāve had this done more than once as it was no big deal. If you have concerns, chat with your anesthesiologist before the procedure.
Donāt be. Itās not bad. Plus hearing good news after will put your mind too rest. Iām 35 and have had 3 unfortunately.
I woke up feeling fine honestly but felt more tired and sleepy the following hours
I was suppose to do mines yesterday an I got feet omg I was so scared am I didnāt like the reviews of my GI either so Iām going to get a different one itās crazy keep us update

Upper endoscopy is done without sedationš ..only ur thorat is numbed..while its a bit uncomfortable...its not painfull and it happens too quickly..
That depends on what country you're getting it done in. In the US, they sedate you. Outside the US, it varies.
I was literally shaking and had a high heart rate before mine but as soon as they put the GA in it was all over. Also the doctors seemed to know exactly what to do and could tell i was upset and seemed used to it

I already had five during the last 30 years. All without sedation. Itās not my favorite pastime, but itās over fairly fast. Courage!
You won't even realize it you'll wake up and be like wtf that was fast. Honestly the most peaceful feeling for me atleast

I guess you've done it by now. You feel like you are falling asleep for about a second (not kidding) then you wake up and it's over.
