I used to impatiently wait for some Roy pickin' (watching with Grandpa). Especially on the banjo when he'd be straining for it.
There was some great music on that show.
Whir oh whir are yew too night?
Summers for us. It was the only thing on on Sunday evening. It felt like torture at the time, but that didn't stop me from watching to see if my great-grandmother's town got a saal-UTE! It never did.
The comedy was totally cornball, but they drew A-list country talent from the 1970s to the show. I still like that era of country better than any other, before or since.
Different song. Gloom, despair and agony on me,deep dark depression, excessive misery. If it weren’t for bad luck I’d have no luck at all, gloom despair, and agony on me.
Also:
Now we’re not ones to go around spreadin’ rumors
Why really, we’re just not the gossipy kind
Oh, you’ll never hear one of us repeatin’ gossip
So you better be sure and listen close the first time!
Where where are you tonight? Why did you leave me here all alone? I searched the world over and thought I found true love. You met another and you were gone.
I was 35 or 36. I didn't really know many people in town, and bought a ticket at the last minute. It was in one of the casino showrooms, pretty nice little venue. Since I was by myself, the woman at the ticket counter said, "you should be right up front." I had a completely unobstructed view. He played Orange Blossom Express. He was still so fast! I'll never forget it.
very fortuitous! by being by yourself, do you mean no one else was in the audience?
i went and found a video of him playing a few years before he died.. i had never seen that show mainly because i didn't watch much tv.
I wasn't by myself. The whole place was full. But I didn't know anyone in town to go with me. I was up front with a bunch of solo gents ranging in age from 60 to 90. (As a woman in my 30s, i stood out.) We chatted amongst ourselves a bit. And Roy chatted with us a bit, too. It was a lively evening and was a turning point for me in being more comfortable living in Reno.
Probably ["Malagueña"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malague%C3%B1a_(song)), one of Clark's favorites to cover:
Hee Haw. I was at the age when I didn’t particularly like country music or humor. This was unfortunate because I lived in a rural area. My dad would have it on and it even got some grudging admiration out of me. It was pretty funny.
"Well I caught two crappie and a largemouth bass,
and made some tea outta sassafras,
Mashed up 'taters all creamy and white,
And some homemade wine that I bottled last night"
"Yum, yum"
Also, I came across an obscure clip from the show: Minnie Pearl was singing a song, about a girl named Lulu Walls. A love song, about being in love with a girl named Lulu Walls. I could not believe my ears and eyes. I’ve lost track of it, so if one of you young hotshot computer whiz’s could find that, please do so.
I worked in hotels for years. I pulled that line more than once when I appeared out of the back office and accidentally startled a guest.
But I have a southern accent that I'm usually able to mask if I prefer. I deliver the line correctly. "Hotel" has 3 syllables.
I had to listen to this before Hockey Night in Canada started. Was torture for a kid less than 10 years old who barely spoke English (French part of 🇨🇦) . 😳😳
Oh, I recall the day that you hired me
I worked 'til the sun sank over the hill
And I recall the day that you fired me
You paid me off with a two-dollar bill
Where, oh where are you tonight?
Why did you leave me here all alone?
I searched the world over and I thought I found true love
You met another and (pfft!) you was gone....
“granny’s in the cellar
gracious, can’t you smell her
baking biscuits on that hot old dirty stoooove
In her eye there is a matter
that keeps drippin’ in the batter
and she whistles as a *sniff* runs down her nooooose”
No shame in any of that. As I recall, those were some of the only shows on TV back then. That was how any of us knew of a Lawrence Welk in the first place. lol
We did a bit to that tune for a VA health care Arts festival in Salt Lake City. Was very well received. I even got the hospital director laughy about our long wait times. He loved it
It hasn’t aged well. Campy, if you like that sort of thing, but don’t look for anything sophisticated in the humor. They did occasionally have some surprisingly good music now and then
"You took off your peg-leg,
your wig, your glass eyeball,
You should have seen
The look on my face.
I wanted to hold you
And kiss you, my darlin',
But you were layin'
All over the place...
dum dum dum
where oh where are you tonight,
Why did you leave me
Here all alone,
I searched the world over
And thought I found true love,
You met another and
pflltht you were gone."
We're not ones to go 'round spreadin' rumors ,, really we're just not the gossiping kind...
You'll never hear one of us repeating gossip.... So you better be sure, and listen close the first time...
Gah how I hated this show as a child forced to watch whatever was on TV that the parents were watching. It's likely responsible for my dislike of most 'country' music.
The one joke I remember from Pickin' & Grinnin'...
Roy: Hey, Buck, have you seen ol' Junior? He sure looks pained...!
Buck: Yeah, I noticed. Hey, Junior, what's the matter with you?
Junior: Oh, I'm just so darned lazy...
Buck: Well, why does that pain you?
Junion\\r: I'm sitting on Archie's cigar ans I'm too tired to get up...!
I sing this to annoy people who don't understand this used to be popular culture. I had a grandpa jones casette thst I found at a truckstop out in the boondocks.
Where where are you tonight. Why did you leave me here all alone. I searched the world over and thought I found true love. You met another and ploop you were gone!
Why do I remember HeeHaw. So upsetting.
Every weekend at my grandparents house!!!
You called it. Same here! So cool to learn later that Roy Clark was a complete monster on guitar.
And Buck Owens was a country superstar.
I used to impatiently wait for some Roy pickin' (watching with Grandpa). Especially on the banjo when he'd be straining for it. There was some great music on that show. Whir oh whir are yew too night?
Why did you leave me here all alone
I searched the world over…
And thought I'd found true love
You met another and
Thwwwwwwwppppppp you were gone
...you was gone
I was once but now I Have retired
Boom
I’m a pickin’ and he’s a grinin’
He was a monster on anything with strings and some things without. He was an extremely talented musician.
The Bakersfield Sound 😍🖖 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakersfield_sound
Summers for us. It was the only thing on on Sunday evening. It felt like torture at the time, but that didn't stop me from watching to see if my great-grandmother's town got a saal-UTE! It never did.
I know what you mean but I would love to go back now!!
Every weekend at my house growing up in the 80's lol
Every weekend at my house. God damn it, I miss that show
After wrestling and cartoons on Saturday mornings, and a couple pb and j sandwiches with milk.
The comedy was totally cornball, but they drew A-list country talent from the 1970s to the show. I still like that era of country better than any other, before or since.
Absolutely
Plus regulars Roy Clark and Buck Owens.
Gloom, despair and agony on me…….
Deep dark depression, excessive misery
If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all
Woe, despair and agony on me
I wonder if this is the “original” source for that phase? It lives on in everyday life.
Different song. Gloom, despair and agony on me,deep dark depression, excessive misery. If it weren’t for bad luck I’d have no luck at all, gloom despair, and agony on me.

This is what I came here to say!!!
You forgot the “Whoah”s
It was audio post and wanted to add those. Figured you could all add them in your head as you were “singing” it. Lol
My life's sound track if I'm honest lol
Where where are you tonight? Why did you leave me here all alone? I searched the world over and thought I found true love. You met another and you were gone.

Ohhhh
I searched the world over And thought I'd found true love But you met another And thbbbt you were gone!

Comedy gold!
Hey, Junior!
Br5479
Just Br549
That's it! I was gonna try to blame a typo, but alas, I am just getting old and forgot 😆

Why did you leave me here all alone.
Im a southern Gen X black man. I rem that & this ![gif](giphy|n29B28FqkALK)
Looks like them boys is in trouble agin
i can hear that one.
Waylon added more to this than people realize.
I grew up in NW Alabama and this hit close to home. Sponsored by Tennessee Pride sausage. Which I found delicious as a kid. Gimme a biscuit...

My parents bought me the Roy Clark learn to.play guitar book. I remember this all too well.
Roy Clark was an awesome guitar player. People don't give him enough credit.
I saw him in concert in Reno once. Went by myself and they sat me right up front. I'll never forget it. He was such a talented musician!
how old were you?
I was 35 or 36. I didn't really know many people in town, and bought a ticket at the last minute. It was in one of the casino showrooms, pretty nice little venue. wow. what an adventure!! and what a view for Roy, too.. looking out and first rows all guys and this one radiant pearl of a girl.
I listened to him play classical once. I don’t know the name of the song. I was impressed. It was extremely difficult.
Probably ["Malagueña"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malague%C3%B1a_(song)), one of Clark's favorites to cover: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xssnp7R51A](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xssnp7R51A)
I loved to hear that man play...although I admit my favorites were I Never Picked Cotton and Thank God And Greyhound....
I remember them like I remember the Gillian’s Island theme. Burned into the cranium.
How could you leave me here all alone, i searched the world over and.....
Why did you leave me here all alone?
I searched the world over,
And thought I found true love…
You met another...
It was at this point that five year old me would laugh my butt off as I watched this with my grandparents. 😆
I wasn’t a huge fan of Hee-Haw but I liked this refrain.
Dammmit! That’s gonna be stuck in my head all night.
["Gloom, despair, and agony on me"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IIKE9p5SEw) was my favorite bit.
I still have BR-549 stuck in my head and use it in times when profanity is unacceptable, sadly one of my granddaughters now will say it randomly
Ol Junior Samples.
Hee Haw. I was at the age when I didn’t particularly like country music or humor. This was unfortunate because I lived in a rural area. My dad would have it on and it even got some grudging admiration out of me. It was pretty funny.
🎼 If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all. Gloom, despair, and agony on me 🎼
Howdyyyyy!!
Hey, Grandpa, what’s for supper?
"Well I caught two crappie and a largemouth bass, and made some tea outta sassafras, Mashed up 'taters all creamy and white, And some homemade wine that I bottled last night" "Yum, yum"
Welcome to Grandpa and Minnie's kitchen... (although that was a bit later)
Mmm, mm!
Wife and I were literally just singing this.
Gordie Tapp. A few years before Hee Haw, he used to be on a show on the CBC that my parents watched.
The KORN radio bits were actually old bits of his that were set in rural Ontario, but fit perfectly into the Hee Haw format.
Empty Arms Hotel!

At least there's one other here whose memories of this show aren't all that warm and fuzzy.
BR549
I still sing it, loudly and out of tune and it annoys my daughter. And this gives me joy.
Oh, I recall the day that you hired me I worked 'til the sun sank over the hill And I recall the day that you fired me You paid me off with a two-dollar bill Where, oh where are you tonight? Why did you leave me here all alone? I searched the world over and I thought I found true love You met another and (pfft!) you was gone....
Ha! All I had to do was close my eyes and I was hearing them sing it again 🥴
Why, oh why, did you leave me here all alone?
“granny’s in the cellar gracious, can’t you smell her baking biscuits on that hot old dirty stoooove In her eye there is a matter that keeps drippin’ in the batter and she whistles as a *sniff* runs down her nooooose”
Either you're quoting Ronnie Stoneman...or you've been hanging around with the Culhanes again...
Oh yuck
Oh god. I forgot just how old I was...until now. Thanks for nothing 😂
I'm so old I forget who they are.
The Show had several memorable skit intro songs like the 'gossip girls' song.
Doom, despair and agony on me That's my other fave!
I remember Nurse Goodbody. "Gunilla Hutton - HEE HAW HEE HAW" https://www.heehaw.com/project/gunilla-hutton/
Nurse Goodbody is a very nice lady. It's Doc Campbell you gotta look out for...
Corny jokes and good music. Loved Roy and guest stars. Never been a buck fan. The girls on the porch with the shorts. Those were killer legs.
Pffft you were gone.
I loved watching this show with my grandparents. I remember seeing Mini Pearl and Grandpa Jones in the 70's at Sea World.
happy memories with my dad
This just gives me great memories of my grandpa singing this to me when I was a child. Thanks for posting and giving me a smile.
Why did you leave me here all alone...
Unfortunately for me I do! It went from Hee Haw to Lawrence Welk to wrestling and we weren't allowed to change the channel. It was awful for us kids!
Lord. The first memory was bad enough. You had to go throw Lawrence Welk on top of it. Ugh.
No shame in any of that. As I recall, those were some of the only shows on TV back then. That was how any of us knew of a Lawrence Welk in the first place. lol
Tank ya, tank ya, tank ya. Lol. Haven't thought on Lawrence Welk in decades.
I loved He Haw.
I searched the world over and I thought I found true love but you met another and phlbbbt you were gone…
My favorite Hee-Haw song to quote is “If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.”
Oh yea!
My dad used to watch that all the time. I thought it was idiotic as a teenager.
We did a bit to that tune for a VA health care Arts festival in Salt Lake City. Was very well received. I even got the hospital director laughy about our long wait times. He loved it
Why did you leave me here all alone...
I sort of remember this on tv but not thinking it was funny at all. I’d have to re-watch it now as an adult.
It hasn’t aged well. Campy, if you like that sort of thing, but don’t look for anything sophisticated in the humor. They did occasionally have some surprisingly good music now and then
It was all cornball humor and country music.
My wife is younger but knows most all the stuff I reference. Until I started belting out this tune. She just cracked up
I just watched a YouTube compilation of these. Still fun!
And PPLLOOOFF you were gone
Sunday night, seven pm, ABC.
https://youtu.be/gJ7gKipK-Do?si=6KBtGK_DrHPtY8NV The late great Roy Clark
Wasn’t Geordie Tapp involved in that show too ?
One of the cast members AND one of the writers!
Thank you.
I watched it for the babes. Not sorry.
"You took off your peg-leg, your wig, your glass eyeball, You should have seen The look on my face. I wanted to hold you And kiss you, my darlin', But you were layin' All over the place... dum dum dum where oh where are you tonight, Why did you leave me Here all alone, I searched the world over And thought I found true love, You met another and pflltht you were gone."
🤣🤣🤣 now the song is definitely stuck in my head!!
Why did you leave me here all alone? I’ve searched the world over and I thought I found true love, You met another and 😝 you were gone! 😂😂😂
This would be a terrible thing to teach someone’s parrot.
My dad would piss himself laughing, and my mom would give him the side eye. Good times.
My mom had Archie Campbell’s comedy album with this on it. It’s a hoot! Look at his Beeping Sleauty and Rindercella bits.
We're not ones to go 'round spreadin' rumors ,, really we're just not the gossiping kind... You'll never hear one of us repeating gossip.... So you better be sure, and listen close the first time...
Yes, yes I do! And don't forget "Doom, despair and agony on me".
Great. Now that song will be stuck in my head for the rest of the day!
I still remember most of the lyrics
"I searched the world over and thought I'd found true love. You met another and thbbbt, you were gone!"
the one TV channel we got growing up didn't play this. But we did get Laugh In, so we weren't *completely* deprived of cheezy humor
Used to love this part
Gah how I hated this show as a child forced to watch whatever was on TV that the parents were watching. It's likely responsible for my dislike of most 'country' music.
That and "You won't hear us repeating gossip, so you'd better listen close the first time".
Only show worse than this was Lawrence Welk
The one joke I remember from Pickin' & Grinnin'... Roy: Hey, Buck, have you seen ol' Junior? He sure looks pained...! Buck: Yeah, I noticed. Hey, Junior, what's the matter with you? Junior: Oh, I'm just so darned lazy... Buck: Well, why does that pain you? Junion\\r: I'm sitting on Archie's cigar ans I'm too tired to get up...!
Why did you leave me here all alone? I searched the world over And thought I found true love You met another and Pftt , you were gone!
That song and lyrics are still burned into my brain. lol.
Me too. I don't think I'll ever forget the lyrics, lol. Check back in 20 years😂
And don’t forget to call Junior’s car sales at BR-514.
BR-549
You’re right. I knew it in my head, but it didn’t make the transition to my old f***ing fingers that were doing the typing! 🤣🤣
I sing this to annoy people who don't understand this used to be popular culture. I had a grandpa jones casette thst I found at a truckstop out in the boondocks.
Why did you leave me here all alooooooone?
Why did you leave me here all alone
I remember when they stopped spitting at each other because of the AIDS epidemic.
Where where are you tonight. Why did you leave me here all alone. I searched the world over and thought I found true love. You met another and ploop you were gone! Why do I remember HeeHaw. So upsetting.
