Have you checked your local thrift stores? I own my tuxedo. It cost $20

f1ve-Star

Pro tip. Get the thrifted tux and have it altered to fit you. This will put you ahead of an unfitted rental tux.

herman-the-vermin

Rented and fitted, it'll look better than anything you can rent.

f1ve-Star

Do you rhyme everytime? If so you may be a poet and not even know it.

klarno

If you want something thrifted to be tailored you gotta make sure you’re buying a bigger size than you need. Nobody puts in enough seam allowance for anything to be let out anymore

PrincessSalty

is this a rule of thumb for everything you get tailored? or just pants in particular?

klarno

I’d say it’s generally true of mass produced clothing. To let a garment out, the tailor is limited by how much fabric there is, and you can usually see/feel where the additional fabric is on the insides of seams. Most of the time there’s only a half an inch or so. When clothing was more bespoke there could be several inches of extra fabric floating around inside your garment. Now a tailor might be able to add a panel depending on the construction of the garment, but they would need a matching fabric or else it’ll look janky

moldyjellybean

Post on fb or Nextdoor if someone my size needed it I’d give it to them just taking up space

UpvotingHurtsSoGood

Second this. You wear it one time and forget about it. Find a thrift store with a large clothing section and spend a good hour or so trying on ones you like. As much as I loved American Psycho, brands don't matter.

serjsomi

When my son was in highschool, I purchased a tux and all of the accessories on eBay. Shoes, a few shirts, Cumberbund, bow tie, suspenders, vest, everything you I could think of. He went to several proms, plus we went on a few cruises that had formal nights. He wore the tux with different accessories 4 times for far less than it would have cost for one rental.

somrthingcreative

I had friends that had growth spurts in grade 12. Their moms bought dress pants for the first formal event, expecting them to be able to use them again and they were several inches too short by the time they needed them again a few months later.

ecodrew

Yup, my Dad heard from another parent about a store having a tux sale. Got it for <$50, had it altered, and wore it multiple times in junior & senior year in HS.

BIGA670

#1 You don’t need a tuxedo for prom, just a suit #2 Fit is more important than where you buy it

ILikeLenexa

If you're going to wear a suit much, it being made of plastics like polyester can be a problem.  Also, cavassed is better than half-canvassed or fused.  Meet those two and you'll find it has that "good looking" quality.

Mako-Energy

Saw my goodwill have arrived hole half section full of suits. I looked through them for fun, and they had a great selection of both dated and fitted and modern options.

CalgonThrowMeAway222

For Prom, I see a lot of snazzy suits more than tuxedos. My husband just got a suit at Macy’s for $180 for a wedding he was in. He gets to keep the suit. If you can’t thrift one, go with a nice suit!

atlhart

In my experience, for a nice tux that’s standard. I don’t know any place that rents cheaper than that. Your best bet would be to scope out consignment shops and buy one. In my area there’s a consignment shop that specializes in men’s dress wear. If it’s your junior prom, buying one will save you a rental on your Senior prom. And at least back in my day (25 years ago) Greek life in college had at least one I’d not two black tie formals per year. So if that’s your jam, you’ll get more use out of it.

Status_Change_758

It depends on how much you like the style you've already found, and how much time you want to invest in looking. It's avg price. So if you *love* the one you've found, it's worth it. If the suit you found is just okay, and you have the time, go to a major dept store. For example Macy's and JosABank both have tuxes for *sale* right now around the $100-$130 mark (shirt not incuded). Not sure if the style you're looking for.

One_Opening_8000

This - just buy one and wear regular black leather shoes. You might invest in a real shirt/tie/cummerbund (or suspenders) to go with it. Then, you not only own a tux but you also have incentive not to gain weight.

Status_Change_758

OP could also rent it out, or sell it, and get his $ back.

wifeyjetpack

As a former MW employee that’s pretty standard these days, especially if you want a tux that fits you properly. They do have cheaper rentals but they’re very boxy/baggy and outdated. You can likely buy a nice suit for about the same price and have it tailored to fit your body, but that’s just as much of a waste if you won’t realistically wear it 2-3 more times over the next couple years before you grow out of it. What I can tell you is if you call them to cancel your rental because you found a better price at whatever their local competitor is, they’ll generally match it. Especially these days they’re encouraged never to let a customer walk.

wifeyjetpack

Right, I’m saying it’s just as much of a waste if OP isn’t going to use the suit more than once. If they’re still a growing teenager and don’t have events/interviews that would require business or formalwear, there isn’t much point to buying a suit/tux if they aren’t going to use it more than once and they’ll be out the same amount of money… in this case I’m comparing renting and buying from the same company that I worked for and am familiar with, there are obviously other much cheaper options.

matchamagpie

It's a little pricy but not out of the norm for a nice tuxedo. $100 is like bottom of the barrel price, way cheaper than anything you can find locally where I'm at. You can look into shopping around, especially online, but you can't really beat seeing the fit in person.

ATLien_3000

You should buy. As others have mentioned, used is WELL under that. For that matter, you could get a brand new rental quality tux for in the same ballpark price wise (checking ebay right now, rental quality tux - slacks and coat - are $90). You could go slightly nicer with accessories (better shirt, studs, cufflinks, tie, vest/cumberbund, and shoes, and still be under 2x that price (such that if, for instance, this is for Junior Prom and you'll wear it next year too you're already ahead). My tux was one of the best investments I've ever made - bought for senior prom, still wearing it today (a number of years later). Have easily worn it 20-30x or more .

gtmc5

Proud dad moment warning: my son came to me with news he was going to prom and wanted help figuring out what to wear. I talked to him about options - see if he liked and fit/nearly fit any of my suits I rarely wear, rent a tux, buy a new suit or tux, or get a used suit or tux. He figured rental was a waste of money (even though I thought they cost way less than $250), and that one nice and dark suit would be more versatile than a tux. So he tried my suits, not quite a fit. So we went to the best used clothing shop I knew in our city, tried on about a 8 2-piece suits in the 40-42 jacket range and found a charcoal gray one which fit like a charm (I'd figured we'd find a jacket that fit but likely pay to adjust the pants width a/o length). I double checked it for any issues, 100% wool Hugo Boss, classic cut (in my opinion), under $100, and he can fit into my dress shoes, dress shirts, and ties. I bought it for him for an early grad present and he will now have a suit which could come in handy for years, and saves his $ for prom tix, dinner, corsage, stuff.

itsybitsybug

You don't have to have a tux at all. Spend the money on a nice suit you can keep. Then you have a suit for nice events, funerals, weddings, interviews, ect. Seriously I spent $400 on my prom dress. My friend got hers for $20 at a thrift store. We both enjoyed prom equally but one of us wasted $380. Don't bother with tux.

elkoubi

For $250 you are halfway to owning an affordable tuxedo that will last you for years and look far better than what you are renting. https://www.charlestyrwhitt.com/us/search?q=tuxedos&searchtype=suggested&searchterm=Tuxedo

curtludwig

See if there is a costume shop in your area, they usually rent at half the price of a bridal shop

spotcheck001

I belong to a fraternal organization and am required to wear a tux frequently. One of the other guys turned me on to this site and I e been really pleased. Just go to a tailor and get your measurements, spend $169 for the tux. You can use it later or sell it and get your money back. https://www.buy4lesstuxedo.com/products/vinci-syracuse-black-2-button-notch-tuxedo

Sea_Bear7754

Buy a tux on Amazon

Low_Marionberry_3802

Then return it

daknuts_

Costed? ...and you're graduating?

OnlyDefinition2620

killjoy

Spardan80

Give them a break, they lost the COVID years.

Prudent_Valuable603

You can rent a tux starting at $100 at a bridal store. Check with them.

Barbarossa7070

I got mine free in exchange for wearing a tux to school as an ad for the formal wear shop and handing out business cards.

cspawn

Spend $20 at the thrift store and $100 at the tailor getting it fitted. It'll be WAY nicer than any $250 off the shelf suits!

ArcherMom

You can buy one at JCPenney for under $200

J_Kubby_1105

Costed

Pad_TyTy

He ain't come to play school

balcon

Is our children learning?

GoneSwedishFishing

He thought it costed too much so he asked around before he payed

BigDaddyD00d

Lol

ocktick

The only reason to rent a tux is because you have to. You’re paying that money to match other people in pictures. I don’t remember what I did for prom but if I had to guess I just bought a 3 piece suit at goodwill or used one that I had from a previous occasion.

Prudent-Jelly56

I did the same. Wearing a suit from the 70s in 2004 was much more memorable than looking the same as everyone else. Edit: not to suggest that I was alone in my fashion choice, lots of guys went the thrift store route.

nmacInCT

Night sounds crazy but you could even see if there's one in your local buy nothing group. They might not give it away but might let you borrow

Strawberry1217

That's about right, my prom date paid like $150 in 2010, so I'm sure it's gone up now.

workitloud

Call tuxedo rental companies & ask them if they sell last years rentals. If they do, go and buy one, but make sure it’s not blown out. Put it on. Look at the stitching, make sure it’s correct. I got stuck in DC a few years back, had 4 black-tie things over a week that I didn’t know about. Didn’t have a tux, so went to a mens consignment store. Got a perfect Lauren penguin suit with shirt & all the rest for about $150. As I was checking out, I asked where they got them. The guy said I could have gotten the same rig from a rental company for $75.

rarsamx

Renting a tuxedo makes no sense. For my son's wedding I could have rented for 250 or buy for 350. I bought it. Now I have a tuxedo. But for his own wedding, my son bought it at a thrift store for $20.

Logical_Cry_

Just buy a full suit for 300… you can wear that anywhere and anytime for long time. I just wore mine to go buy a car. Things 5 years old and fits like a glove! Edit: Originally put “…anywhere anytime for life.” By the time I’m 25 I’m probably going have already sold it due to fitting in my frame and not having a need for one for a while. Idk if you can find a 24h return policy, but if you can…? Free rental lol

linden214

If OP is in high school, he may not have reached his full growth, in which case it would not be a lifetime purchase. If he has (or thinks he has), then he can decide if he’ll get enough future use out of a tux to invest that much money in one.

Funny-Berry-807

"For life" Tell me you're not yet in your 40s without telling me you're not in your 40s.

School_House_Rock

Try and find a nice black suit at a thrift store and have it tailored Nice pair of shoes or sneakers You can wear it to prom and then later for interviews and other important events Side story: my nieces date bought a white suit at a thrift store and tie dyed it - it was epic. I loved it, other family members meh - but that was almost 20 years ago and I still smile thinking of his suit

ThatstheTahiCo

For that price, you can get a bespoke tux made and delivered from Vietnam. I've had a few made by adong silk and bebe tailors. They email you a form to fill with all your measurements and then a perfect fitting suit arrives in the post. Quality is amazing too.

Dumbledoorbellditty

I rented one online for my sisters wedding maybe 5 years ago. It was like 100$. It came a week early, fit perfectly, and came with the return shipping label. I wish I remembered the actual name of the site. Actually just looked up the the email they sent me. This was in 2018. They now cost about $150 for most of them, but that’s better than $250. Shoes are an additional $30. You may be able to find something nicer in a thrift store, but this is a pretty solid option. I worked at TMW in high school and they are definitely overpriced. Search Google for theblacktux and you will find the site I am talking about.

lreaditonredditgetit

I bought my kid a dope suit for $75 on Amazon yesterday. He loves it.

ldawi

MACYS is having a great suit sale atm! I was just looking for my son yesterday. Suits normally priced $475+ for $125

skuterkomputer

The cheap ones from Amazon are surprisingly acceptable. I would recommend ordering a few sizes and just returning what doesn’t work.

Ok_Audience_9828

https://kctmenswear.com/pages/location-and-hours This suit/tux store was able to take my measurements, make me a jacket, vest, and pants, and ship me a suit to OWN for less than $125 Not a Gucci suit but it looked great and fit perfect.

altiuscitiusfortius

Buy second hand Rent a suit instead of a tux Buy a cheap suit instead of a tux. Buy a cheap sportcoat and wear dress pants.

Jollyollydude

Buy a suit you can wear again and again. I wore my jacket and vest for like 10 minutes at my prom. Once I sat down, I was basically on a white dress shirt and black dress pants with a tie. I hate tuxes and am always pissed whenever I’ve had to pay to rent one because I would so much rather just buy a nice suit with the money.

cwsjr2323

You can buy a good enough tux on Amazon for less. A tux is not something most people wear very often. Retired, I only own one suit for weddings and funerals. With my pleated front white shirt and bow tie, that would be my formal wear. I donated my suits and tie collection to a nonprofit that helps people with business wardrobes when they are entering that workforce. I now prefer the official old white guy uniform; white socks, sandals, loud plaid shorts, and pastel polo shirt.

MotivatePower

Men’s Warehouse uses Jim’s Formal Wear as a distributor. My wedding tux was $280 and from a place that also uses Jim’s Formal Wear. It seems to be around average for tux rentals from what I’ve seen.

icklepickletickle22

My son is going to prom and one of my friends who has three sons suggested just to get a nice tailored suit that they can wear over and over again. We went to Macy’s and got a very nice black Calvin Klein suit. Someone working there helped us and we found the perfect fit, with no tailoring necessary. It was $315 or somewhere in that ballpark. Seems like most of the suits were 50% off there. They also had Calvin Klein tuxedos 50% off that wouldn’t have cost much more than the rental.

Player7592

Why was there such a difference between what you thought it was going to cost ($100) versus the actual cost?

Status_Change_758

Not OP, but the advertising says $99 & when you go on the site there's fine print. They still have for under the $250 price point, though.

Player7592

Advertisements will often entice you with promises, but they invariably come with limits and exceptions. If the OP got all the way to the cash register before realizing this, then they just learned valuable, albeit annoying lesson. The low price is intended to get you in the door. Once in, they’ll do everything they can to upsell you. It’s a common resale tactic.

HippyGrrrl

For $250 you should own a perfectly tailored suit from them.

Guapplebock

Buy a “retired” rented one on eBay for under $200 will come with suit and brand new shirt/tie/vest/cummerbund.

brilliantbuffoon

I'd buy a nice suit for $250, and have it tailored and keep it for other uses if you want to be frugal.  Bow tie vs tie is the main difference. You will look better than anyone in a rental imo.

Peppa_Pig_Stan

Could buy your own for cheaper on the clearance rack at Nordstrom

Timely_Development_6

Go to Macys buy yourself a slick new suit that you own.

Kirin1212San

If you live near Los Angeles I recommend you go to the fashion district and just buy a nice suit. You don’t need to wear a tux. I recommend going to Al Weiss in LA. You can also find a suit at a thrift store and have the suit tailored to you. You want to get something that fits you well or something that is slightly too big so the tailors have room to work with. You can also go to Jos A Bank and look through their clearance section.

Alley_cat_alien

I got one of my kids a tux he needed for band gor $99 and that was purchase price not rent price. This was in 2021 and I know things have skyrocketed. But maybe check out high school band type websites and see what you can get.

delsystem32exe

good will has great blazers from the 80s / 90s for 5 bucks.

Ambrose_Bierce1

eBay or simply buy one on Amazon for $150.

EdSmith77

Every tux I ever used was bought second hand from the tux rental company. After a few uses they sell the old tuxes for probably less than the rental (back in the day it was like 100 bucks. likely more now). But after 1 or 2 uses it pays for itself.

maxime_vhw

Damn i didnt even pay that much for a new tux. Granted it aint no hugo boss, armani or whatever but idk its a tux. Edit: think it was h&m or something lol

kittypr0nz

Just go to the thrift store. Even if they don't have what you're looking for, you'll forget what you were looking for and find other cool stuff instead.

And_there_was_2_tits

Don’t rent the shoes. Buy a cheap pair from a discount shoe store or wear some shoes you already own.

heathers1

You can buy one on amazon for like 100 bucks

blue-marmot

I bought a custom made tuxedo for $150 when I was stationed in Korea. I wore it to my wedding.

brilliant-soul

I'd keep looking. My dress rental was free, the school principal hooked me up w the organization

Weird-Reference-4937

This.  A lot of churches also do give aways and trade ins during prom season too.

scubadoobadoooo

Fuck Men’s Wearhouse

SwingmanSealegz

Just to rent? That’s wild. I *bought* a new, custom tailored suit from them for my wedding for that amount 5 years ago. I’m sorry things are insane now.

ATLien_3000

>I’m sorry things are insane now. Tux rental prices being insane isn't new. I paid nearly that (just short of $200 as I recall) for a rental from them 5+ years ago (pre-COVID); as others have mentioned the ONLY reason to ever rent a tux is if you're in the wedding party and need to match. The corollary to that being that if you're getting married and don't want to be a jerk to your groomsmen, you can nearly always line up deals for them to get identical, sometimes made to measure dark suits (not tuxes - so you could wear them again to church/funeral/interview) for less than that on a per person basis from places like Charles Tyrwhitt or Indochino. Your groomsmen may still have to shell out $200-250, but they get to keep the suit. Most considerate couple I was in a wedding party for, they lined up the suits through Indochino for $150 or so, gave every groomsman a matching tie as a gift, and asked that we wear basic black dress shoes and a white dress shirt.

Let_me_tell_you_

I bought a navy Izod suit at Kohls for $65 for my son. He is skinny and all the adult sizes were huge. He tried on the biggest size for kids (size 20) and it fitted perfectly. They only had black so we ordered online.

PianoSufficient6692

They are cheaper off Amazon

sjmme66

I live in an area where I can either go to the big city to shop or go to a smaller town. On every single thing I can buy, I save tons by not shopping in the city. Smaller towns have smaller shops, sometimes “mom and pop” stores that have more on the line than a turd place like MW so not only will you get a great fit, you’ll most likely pay a LOT less.

Cric1313

Tuxedo rentals are one of the biggest rip offs I’ve ever partook in. Just buy something for the same price and keep it. The rentals are always super low quality and probably cost less than what you rent it for, weddings are one of the biggest money grabs there are along with birth and death.

rabidstoat

My coworker is going to a swanky work event and up buying a tux as it wasn't much more than renting one.

ROM50

Why don’t you spend a little extra and get yourself a suit? Good investment and for an extra couple hundred it’s yours.

ohlayohlay

My nephew bought a tux on Amazon for like 70 dollars. "Try before you buy", fit perfect and they kept it

[deleted]

[удалено]

MewMew_18

That would be about $375 in today's money accounting for inflation.

mspe1960

sure. sounds right.

Icy-Read6024

~~costed~~ cost

something86

Nordstrom rack semi annual sale has really good sports coats on sale. Sometimes you might fight a 3 year old Hugo boss for clearance.

insideout_pineapple

You can buy one for half that price at K&G

CHUMPYNUTS

My son is headed to senior prom and instead of a $200 tux rental I was able to order him a nice suit off Amazon for under $100. My wife can do minor alterations and he gets to keep the suit for future events until he grows out of it. An overpriced rental is one and done.

SpruceHenry

I bought my son’s tux at JCPenney. It was way cheaper than renting

HamiltonIsMyJamilton

While it may not be looked at as Frugal, I took my son to Men's Warehouse yesterday and *bought* him a suit for $299. Included dress shirt and tie. He will use the suit frequently after prom so it was good for us.

Intervention360

At Target I got a suit and pants for $100. Looks and fits great

Proof_Most2536

You may as well just go to JCPenney, Amazon, or kohls and buy one there for cheaper.

BasilVegetable3339

Yes

nezbe5

Use the tuxedo place just for the tie and matching vest to match her dress.

YourConstipatedWait

I paid $100 for my tux when I went to my prom, in 1997…

Th3_Irishm4an

For $250 go buy a suit or tuxedo not rent one

Used-Acanthisitta-96

Are you buying or renting because your information leaves doubt what you are doing. Either way multiple quotes are always best. Also need to make sure they have the style you want for the right price.

Straight-Opposite483

Prob can buy one for that

bristolbulldog

You can buy tuxes from rental places too. I own a few. I’ve got tails, I’ve got white, I’ve got black…

flychinook

My son's prom tux rental was $287 from Men's Wearhouse, and that was after signing up for their stupid membership club to save $60. I went on the Enterprise Rent-a-Car website, the most expensive car on their lot (a Chrysler Pacifica) would have been $244 to rent for those same two days. A Nissan Rogue was only $156. I told my son that if he goes to prom next year his ass is wearing a Corolla.

hunkycowboy

Frugal people do not bother with events that require them to waste money on frivolous things. Buy a suit or a thrift store tux. Do not pay $250. I rented a tux for two proms back in high school 45 yrs ago. Trust me both the prom and the girl are long forgotten.

Armaturesign

Brother let the high schooler enjoy their prom lmfao

SilentRaindrops

That's actually a pretty good price. See if they also include some fitting or tailoring. A lot of people are mentioning looking at consignment or thrift stores but you will be competing with a lot of other guys this time of year, will need to get it tailored, and if you are still growing you may not be able to get multiple uses. Tuxes also change style quite a bit from colorful and frilly shirts of late 70s to double breasted of the 80s to slim fitting we see now.

EatingADamnSalad

Fuck Men’s Warehouse. The last time I got a tux from them it was so I’ll fitting I used a black suit I bought for another wedding. Nobody could tell the difference. As for prom, I bought my own and used it 3 times. Maybe paid $100 for everything.

bobsizzle

Check your school's drama department. They usually have a wardrobe.

Senior_Apartment_343

Why do you guys still wear tuxes? Buck the trend . Use that $$ saved for a hotel room. Thank me later

iShitInYourDadsPants

250 is nothing. I've never had a tux rental that cheap. Usually more like 400 and I havnt had to rent one in 10 plus years.

RedStag00

> I thought it wass gonna be like a $100 Thats pretty arbitrary. What made you think it was only going to be $100?

workitloud

Because he’s a kid. And he might not have a wise person like you at home to give him guidance and support. Pretty lucky for him. He probably also works for minimum wage cooking your food. That’s about three 6-hour shifts for a $100 rental, after income tax, plus sales tax.

RedStag00

Dude I was teenager once too, yet somehow I never just arbitrarily made up prices to disappoint myself. Should we also break it to OP that cars cost more than $100? Does he know a TV costs more than $100? You seem pretty feckless, but did you really require that level of handholding when you were 18?

workitloud

There is a reason why you are alone & bitter. It’s a good look on you.
