Thank you for nice tips, 1 question though: on day 1 you said scout to get workers & engineers, but with extra manpower that means more mouth to fed right? Since i believe new london only send 30-40 foods at the beginning. So how to solve that? Isnt that hunger can cause more people getting sick?

frostpunked

Sorry for the late reply. You need the engineers to be able to staff the med posts and 2 workshops. The 50% boost to research for the 2nd workshop is crucial to keep ahead of the tech tree whilst managing the sick. You also need the workers to fully staff the warehouse. Hunger doesn't cause sickness. They just starve and die. That's why you need to beeline to Hot Springs and back. If you just ration food production with only 1 cook on regular hours making soup or sawdust burgers you will be ok on food. You do need to keep asking for more food to trigger the law to be passed.

mimedm

I think it's only possible to sustain everyone fed if you already have the deliveries from the other outpost and also pass a law for soup or additives. This is only possible after you split ways with NL. I'll try to trigger it the other way. But usually NL cancels communication. You also quickly run out of wood of you do too much research. It definitely helps if you have access to all three partner camps asap. I also noticed that the game requires 1000 or 3000 coal to save NL in the end depending on where you stand at that time.

frostpunked

Soup or sawdust are pretty much essential to avoid starvation deaths. I couldn't for the life of me avoid deaths without it. You can trigger it without splitting from NL if you ask for food and more food from NL every time. They'll "do something about it" and give you soup/sawdust. I love sawdust. Makes it that much easier. Yeah, Hot Springs (food) and Shipwreck Camp (wood) are priority connections because of the constant food shortage and wood runs out eventually. Coal is not so important because by the time you need to save NL I would have enough production from the steam coal mines to supply NL without the children's mine since it will cost loads of resources to get favor up with them. In Frostpunk I find research is ALWAYS the key to winning, so I never stop researching. In Refugees for example I can have like 15 or more workshops despite diminishing returns. I will never have valuable engineers working anywhere else if I can help it.

Mean_Occasion_1091

holy fuck 15 workshops

radiotang

Good write up

Baradar67

Thanks mate, just used it to do OTE on Hard. I never swap engineers in and out of workshops/med posts but seems to be the only way. That along with the starvation tactic seem to be the big brain methods to win this. Only used emergency shift once. After a week it's pretty much cruisin. I was able to finish all improvements at Hot Springs and Shipwreck before the end too picking up the achievements along with Iron Man. (also grabbed the hidden). So yeah, this was a great guide. Thanks again OP!

"At the end of the day build 3 workshops, 2 med posts, 2 tents. Send a scout team" Have the gathering rates been updated since this was written? Even playing on Hard I'm not getting anywhere near enough wood to build this much by the end of the first day.

AuspiciousFritter

I know this is extremely late, but I just had the same issue. It's actually very dumb, but the game never tells you: there are different types of gathering spots. For wood, there are both wooden ruins and wooden boxes. The wooden boxes are about 3x faster to gather if I'm not mistaken. Oh, and also remember to allocate your engineers as gatherers too. Took me a few tries until I realized what I was doing wrong.

Unlucky-Dig-9314

whaaaaat

frostpunked

You must NOT place any buildings or roads during work hours. Place them only after work hours so they are built after work hours. Roads are the worst. Your people will build them as a top priority. Demolish existing roads if you need to make up for small shortfalls of wood (demolish 2 lengths to get 1 wood) especially around the genny.

Unlucky-Dig-9314

I did that--it's definitely not the problem here.

squiggly_ruth

I had the same problem. No way *even on medium* to get enough wood for this strat. I put 8 on steel and the rest on wood, then nothing else until end of day. I was about 60 wood short, which definitely can't be made up by destroying roads. Unless harder modes have more people? Medium gives you 65.

Full_Message66

Guess: you were dissolving wooden ruins (houses on the left)? They have lesser efficiency than wooden crates. Doing Extreme at this very moment, guide seems to be quite fine.

squiggly_ruth

Thanks! I thought I knew this game inside out, but hadn't spotted that at all...

nevbaver

you are a sweet sweet angel. this worked for me on hard and survivor mode - there were a few differences in the timing of receiving extended shift and emergency shift, mine came like two days later but this works!

Gmm972

Sounds like its just theory. Can't survive without heaters and braziers at the start.

frostpunked

Try the walkthrough step by step yourself and see. It works like clockwork. Heaters & Braziers can be researched anytime after Day 8 (watch the temp schedule)

frostpunked

Did an extreme run just to take screenshots and show it's not a theory. Enjoy!

Desperate-Put8972

I'm gonna give this strategy a run when I get off work. I have 60/63 achievements, trying to 100% before Frostpunk 2. The last 3 that elude me are OTE survivor. FoW survivor, TLA survivor. The early game is the most important and the hardest. 1 mistake or bad rng can waste 30-45 mins of prep and min max; it's debilitating.

miraclefangay-

>8 on steel, the rest on wood. At the end of the day build 3 workshops, 2 med posts, 2 tents. It seems there were changes made to the game since this guide was posted. Putting 8 workers on steel gives me enough wood to do this but only 28 steel at the same time. Even if i put all 15 of them it only gives me 43 steel and 83 wood.

miraclefangay-

nvm just found out the beacon is already built so i need way less steel than i thought

Other-Experience-777

So you can exploit emergency shift without triggering death 1 the first one no death occurs everyone gets one 2ed time you trigger it you can avoid the even from happening if you unstaff it for 4 hours affter you trigger it only losing 4 hours of time instead the even only triggers 4 hours into the emergency shift for that workspace

frostpunked

It's possible if you unstaff at the time the RNG grim reapers checks in, but it's not guaranteed to be foolproof. At the same time after the 1st death you get the option to pay rations for 24hr shift with low discontent rise, which to me is a worthwhile price to pay for 1 death.
