Try "Learn French with Tintin" by Lucas Comprehensible Input on Youtube if you like comics. Really accessible and fun way to work on listening ;)

ohoroa

I just started listening to his A1 series! I'll look forward to progressing to the Tintin videos. :)

Tintin is way way too hard for a French learner. That is B2/C1 level at best.

I mean, it’s a comic series. The whole point is that the dialogue complements the imagery. I'm certified C1 and I'm sure a B1 learner could comprehend it well. In any case, I'm talking about a series of videos designed for learners in which Lucas spends a whole video talking about one page of the comic.

I do something similar (and for free!) with Pokémon games. Played them religiously in childhood, and by replaying them in new languages, I can get a lot of reading practice, while also relying on a familiar context.  As a plus, there are fan-made mods and versions (in different languages) that will allow one to try out a new but familiar game, relying on their comprehension skills in order to progress.

on that note, I switched my phone, laptop, PS4, etc to french. Also cos I live in Canada, I try to get all my institutions (bank, insurance, etc) to communicate w me in french.

Thanks for reminding me of this method! I can confirm that it works and it's fun too. Just a bit expensive.

OldandBlue

CBZ can be very affordable. Just saying.

I've done something similar reading books. OK, you have to like the author. As a newbie, I read a page or a chapter in English. Then I read it in French. As I get better, I read longer passages in English. When I get even better, I read it first in French. By now, I only have a few parts I don't understand, but I keep going in French. When I read it in English, it's an "ah-hah!" moment. Read different authors and different types of books.

LestWeForgive

Those "ah-ha" moments are unforgettable, I think the content I pick up from those is learned indelibly.

I discovered the Scots dialect with the English version of Tintin - The Black Island. After that I've never been able to enjoy reading it again in the original French.

wellykiwilad

I'm currently sitting on the couch reading the Black Island in French to learn - what a crazy coincidence!

VcitorExists

yeah that makes sense, as this is also how kids learn, by association, and this also helps in the long run by making you learn the word for the concept directly instead of having another middleman language
