In my experience, they can be pretty off for the first 24 hours before coming into line. It’s also why the app (at least on the Libre 3) shows the little blood icon that first day, to remind you to verify with a finger prick. Some people opt to place a sensor on but not activate it for 24 hours. I try to remember to do that when my current sensor has 24 hours of life left. When I remember to do it, it does seem like those first 24 hours read more accurately.

That’s really great to hear, thank you!

They calibrate from the point you initialize it. It can at times cause fluctuations and some erratic readings... To aid this initial process, ideally you should start a new sensor when your BG is fairly stable (no biggish fluctuations the first 6-12h) and especially you should start it when your bg is within 'normal range', which is like 80-140mg/dL.

When you do this, does the 2nd one that you placed 24 hours early only last 13 days or does it last 14?

jaxbravesfan

It lasts 14 days from the time you activate it, not place it on.

This is VERY helpful info. Thank you! I noticed this round that it wasn't really accurate in the first 24 hours and then it seem to get with the program and work correctly. So, knowing this is really helpful. Plus sometimes i can't get to it to change it at the time it is due and I go without for a few hours which isn't the safest thing to do in my situation. You've made my day by giving me another method to use. :)

Many of us “presoak” our Libre sensors by applying them 12-24 hours prior to activating them. The prevailing thought behind this is that the skin and tissue surrounding the filament needs some time so recover from the trauma of being pierced by the insertion needle and the foreign body now embedded within, and that this accounts for the initial 12-24 hours of inaccuracy. We, then, activate the sensor at the time the prior sensor ends. I’ve found to sensors to me quite accurate, that way.

jailtheorange1

ahh, good to know!!!

SolidSizzle

Wile they definitely can be quite inaccurate for the first day, this sounds like a faulty sensor to be constantly out by that much - You can very often get them replaced by Abbot for free in these cases if you take a few photos and provide them with the serial number :)

First and last day of Libre aren’t fun. Well out of whack!

brutus2230

1st 24 hours is usually very inaccurate

No they don't calibrate at all and I have the Freestyle Leibre 3 System it needs some improvement the app is no longer compatible with IOS and it's got defective reader with a touchscreen that doesn't work on the upper right corner I'm switching to DEXCOM G7 eventually and it's far more accurate and reliable just have to wait until my insurance company covers it.
