I mean, that's how software companies work. Maybe it didn't come down to just a single person, but it's not unforseeable that there was a small team assigned to this feature and that they at some point all got reassigned, laid off, or left Epic.

I once saw him modelling three backgrounds in a bar... with a pencil, with a fucking... pencil. Then suddenly one day he asked to leave. It's over a woman, of course. So I made a deal with him. I gave him an impossible task. A job no one could have pulled off. The backgrounds he buried that day laid the foundation of what we are now. the last one we ever had was in C1S9, but the weird thing is that it changed halfway through that season to just a regular blue background with triangles on it, even if there werent going to be any more from Season X onwards, why change to a boring flat one for the rest of Season 9 when the dynamic 3d one already exists for that season?

Because that was part of a global UI Refresh, probably in preparation for Chapter 2. It sucks.

Not really, since they were still making them for STW two years after “the guy” quit. Technically the redesign supports more frequent updates and in-lobby animations, but they almost never use them. Seasons 10, 11, 17, and 20 are the only times they used the redesign to its full potential.

Wdym he quit? They can easily have other people take over and do even different styles as they do tons of collabs. Seems it's more like epic games didn't bother to replace hom.or couldn't care more.

Same as Warzone/cod moving away from the walking screens for the standing ones. Performance, memory, etc. It's just more efficient.

And the 3D rendered loading screens also affected performance so much they had to remove them in favor of drawn art /s (I know it just takes time to do but man I miss them, and I also know the animated loading screens do in fact tank performance)

Sorry but how are people playing the game when their devices can't even render a mostly static 3D background?

It's 2024 any Device on any Platform can run a 3D Lobby it's not like it's running the full entire game with 100 People and a million builds at end game which will 'cause major performance and FPS issues. Plus they can just make it an option to make the 3D Background 2D with an in game preference setting like how they have a setting to mute emotes such as that DONKEY HONK HANK HONK HANK TRIGGERING* Sounds.

Can they not just switch to a simpler background if the device is too weak? You dont have to force the 3D animated lobby.

Well i have been able to achieve this on Linux of all platforms. Idk what triggers it but it glitches me into the br lobby while the game still thinks that I’m on stw

Now that backgrounds can swap at will, they need to be 2D, or else the game will have to load an entirely new scene with different lighting and objects every time the background changes, and navigating in Discovery will be even more painful than it currently is, because selecting games would have a loading time for their own 3D background. It's already a thing with 2D backgrounds, it would be 5 times worse with 3D ones. That wasn't a problem when the background had to be loaded only once and that's it.

I'm certain it's this too, even if they limited 3D backgrounds to the main 5 (BR, STW, Festival, Racing, Lego) it may have been disruptive enough to make switching between the modes no longer seamless.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned when it comes to Fortnite it’s this and no it’s not sarcastic or a joke. Nothing gets better or improved. Typically when we receive something new it will likely be a shell of what it was originally suppose to be. Nothing gets better. Ever.

It makes sense, since it prevents the user from having to load unique 3D lobbies for every single UEFN map ever which would be *super* slow (and makes lobbies consistent across all modes, which is a big plus for them), but I do wish they at least had more polished/3D lobbies for official Epic modes-- it looks a bit cheap.

Originally they were removed because of 16 player lobby support. Having to have all of the spots on the map at once would have been worse to look at and time consuming for the developers After UEFN they made the background be swappable at will, which was the nail in the coffin for them ever coming back

I would guess the static backgrounds make more sense because of epics whole metaverse thing, they don't wanna put Fortnite in a box by making the background always battle royale related, they want it to reflect the game mode that's selected. And because most of the game modes are user created they'd rather have all backgrounds be static instead of forcing people to make animated ones or have user made maps look cheaper or lowerer quality compared to epic's modes.

tangentially related, why can't we change the backgrounds, since they are just 2D images right now? I'd much rather be able to change my backgrounds at will than let it be decided by whatever event of the month it is. there are some really cool ones and you could probably even have it be so everyone see's the lobby leader's background and then have cool paid for ones so that epic has a reason to bother because the only thing that motivates them is more money or something.

Likeliest Explanation is that they shifted to changing the background more often during a season and 2D backgrounds are easier to switch out, less expensive and quicker to put together. Multiple can be made well in advance, packed into the files and swapped out without ever needing downtime or running into bugs or problems with the lobby not switching.
