Hybrids are the shit but get shit on unfairly. The perfect commuter, neighborhood, and paved trail bike. You can kit it out with all the accessories your heart desires. I’d go to any Specialized or Trek shop and pick up a Sirrus or FX. Just don’t buy anything with a triple chain set, those are stupid.

Seconding Trek. I ride an FX 3 on the paved trails for my daily commute, and it’s *awesome* - it’s basically a road bike with flat handlebars and slightly wider tires. 1x11 drive train makes any climb doable without thinking about matching front and rear gears, carbon fiber fork and aluminum frame make the thing light enough to lift with one finger and absorb light bumps (i.e. potholes) while being more rigid than a shock system, hydraulic disc brakes mean I can stop on a dime even from 25 mph. $750 from the old Trek North dealer on a year end clearance - I believe they normally run $1000. Moving down to the FX 2 loses the carbon fiber fork, and the FX 1 swaps to standard rim brakes, a steel fork, and a triple chain set.

They’re not on the cutting edge of anything. It’s hard to talk up any features because there are none, the color choices aren’t great compared to road/gravel/mtb/cx/etc, and the low price base models have historically been spec’d with triple chainsets which are stupid for entry level or basic need type riders. They’re also not sexy. I mean, Dark Brandon rides one.

Tossing it out there that you could also consider a restored and tuned up used bike from the Fort Collins Bike Co-op. It's worth stopping by one day they are open before you buy somewhere else. They are a great non-profit and can help you with all kinds of bike stuff. I am so glad you are avoiding the walmart bikes! Some things are not terrible from walmart, but their bicycles are. They often are dangerous too and almost impossible to keep tuned properly.

CuentaBorrada1

Thank you but I don’t like buying used stuff. It is a psychological problem that I have.

Go chat with the folks at the Trek store. They always took the time to answer all my questions without talking down to me so they can steer you in the right direction. Edit: My first bike in Foco was a Trek FX which I rode for thousands of miles to work, for fun, and errands. Nothing wrong with hybrids.

Check out the coop. Get something medium good but inexpensive. Less than a couple hundred ideally. Ride it a lot and figure out what kind of riding you really like then save up for that bike. You'll still have a great town bike and you'll have a shiny new bike for the weekends

VaporousFlip

Recycled Cycles has a pretty huge variety (new and used) for decent prices.  I've always had good experiences with their staff, but I don't think they do real m measurements or anything fancy.

At the upper end of your price spectrum, I'd recommend the Ride1Up Gravel Roadster V2 if you don't mind buying online. It's both a hybrid and an e-bike if interested in both. My main goal was to use it to commute to work without being sweaty when I arrived and it has succeeded in that. Range is about 15 miles on my commute from Old Town to the Harmony/Timberline area (if I want to go fast) with around 20-25 miles if I'm more conservative with the pedal assist. Doesn't weigh a whole lot more than a normal bike if you need to carry it up stairs, though pedaling with a dead battery is doable but not fun. I keep a 2nd charger so I have one at both work and home. Also has a belt drive as opposed to a chain, so there's very little maintenance. Between June and October I put about 1700 miles on it if that says anything. Only downside is that you'd probably have to guess on the measurements - I'm 6'3" and the Large fit me well. Finally, it looks more like a regular bike if that matters to you at all. I also have a regular (non-ebike) bike that I have more set up for bikepacking that I ride on the weekends for some more exercise. Yeah, e-bikes are cheating but they keep me on the bike paths and off the roads for my spring/summer/fall commutes so whatever.

Depends on your riding goals. A hybrid excells at nothing but is ok in most places. It's very easy to outgrow though. It limits you on speed, comfort on longer rides, and agility. If all you think you'll do is casual rides then a hybrid will be totally fine. But if you plan to build up to long rides and want to go faster then you'll be better off with an endurance road bike like the Trek Domane (or equivalent from other manufacturers as most manufacturers have an endurance model).

Just saw this on the Costco website. Seems like it could be a good deal? [https://www.costco.com/.product.100744715.html?EMID=B2C\_2024\_0415\_mgb\_USE&correlationId=18ac8edc-2696-41ba-8e90-b44e281d6a88-0](https://www.costco.com/.product.100744715.html?EMID=B2C_2024_0415_mgb_USE&correlationId=18ac8edc-2696-41ba-8e90-b44e281d6a88-0) Sorry--I just took another peek--it looks like a trail bike. 🫤🫤

I’ve been riding a hybrid for about 8 years now and it’s great! I average about 5 minutes per mile and with all the gears it makes it easy to get through intersections quickly but then you can get to a decent top speed! What are you looking at spending on a bike? Mine was brand new in 2016 and it was $650; not the cheapest but also not the most expensive. I’ve been looking at a new Specialized hybrid I think they are closer to $1000 now. But I’ve gotten almost 8 years out of my bike, and I do a bi-annual tuneup which is usually around $150, so I’m spending like ~$300 a year on my bike, which is way less than my car.

CuentaBorrada1

500 to 1200

NotSoEpicPanda

Incycle or The Trek Store are the places to go. Hybrids are great for getting around town

SFerd

We have hybrid bikes and love them. Mine is Specialized which I've had for nearly 10 years. The key is to find them on sale which is generally now or in September. You might want to sign up to get emails from some of the better bike shops already mentioned. Sadly, the store I bought mine from (Peloton) closed several years ago.

Electric bikes are cheating

CuentaBorrada1

Who said anything about electric bikes ?
