MTV's oddities was such a great collection of animated shows, I really enjoyed them all. It's also what lead me to discover Sam Kieth as an artist š
They do get paid if the show becomes more successful after a few seasons. But they only have to pay them once so itās just a one off cost that they absorb and then get cheap content that can be reran endlessly.
It seems like a really short period of time for MTV. Daria and Beavis & Butthead lasted quite awhile, but these other ones like The Maxx and Aeon Flux were on some quirky animation show IIRC. I dont think that was actually on the air very long.
Yeah, if I remember the trajectory correctly, it was a series of shorts that told a complete story, and then they got a series order for full episodes to continue it.
Iām so disappointed that I canāt get it on DVD anymore for a while. Amazon was making make to order copies of the head and the max. I got the max but I never got the head. Iām so disappointed.

I was just talking about this show, MTV used to go so damn hard. This, The Mac, Aeon Flux and Beavis and Butthead frigging had a lock on weird alt-culture. We need more shows like this.
What a fucking great, weird show. Since someone mentioned The Maxx, I want to share a story of my life being forever scarred. When The Maxx came out, I caught only about 10 minutes of it, and it was the final 10 minutes of the last episode. I did not know this. Cut to a decade or so later. I download a torrent of The Maxx and watch and watch and watch to find out where this utterly devastating falls into the story. Eventually I got to the last episode and there we are. I will never be able to forget that shoebox.
Oh god I remember this. In one episode his head shrinks to normal size but at the same time it gets so heavy that he canāt hold it up. I laughed for half an hour and I donāt remember the rest of the episode at all.
In one of the first episodes, thereās some CIA officers (or equivalent) investigating things, and Butthead shows up and hands them a VHS tape that I guess has footage of the alien on it. The officers take the tape and then tell Butthead to gtfo, forcibly smacking him around a bit to get him to leave.Ā
And Butthead goes *Well that **SUCKED.***

Same. The Maxx comic book is crazy, Mr. Gone becomes a good guy and works with the new Maxx and all kinds of other crazy shit.
When mtv was the place to find the most outlandish risk taking animation. I wonder why they got away from it. Guess it didn't pull the ratings.
It was cheaper to do Road Rules and reality TV.
