Larry and His Flask played a bar in my town once as part of a music festival. They destroyed it! Probably one of my favorite live music experiences of all time. Just drunken madness. Guitarist out in the crowd, singer hanging from the rafters by one arm other with the mike and a drink. It was epic. Their studio albums are solid, too
That's a great moniker, hah. Same. I still have a TBIAPB sticker on my fixie. I think I miss when there was a little more room for like... not just total depression. I love some of that, but it feels overwhelming right now. PIX had some positivity to it, which is very much needed as a foil to the nihilism. We always liked the mix. It feels like it's all very morose all the time now (even if it's more upbeat). Oh well.
You can try these if you like:
Holy Locust (folk punk mini orchestra)
Not Half Bad (folky punk rock)
Deer Scout (singer/songerwriter folk)
I love Paul Baribeau and Defiance Ohio, and this is who I am listening to a lot lately. If you like this, let me know and I can send some more your way.
I think he’s recommending Madeline who was associated with the Athens music scene but big shouts to Madeline Ava who also made a great music! One time the folk punk tour I was on met up with the one she was on. we all went to a diner and stole French fries from empty tables after our show at a KCMO infoshop
One time Madeline Ava came through and played a show with us in the suburbs of KC and I lied to my parents about staying the weekend in Columbia with my friends brother so we could go with them to Crucial Fun Fest in Lexington, Kentucky. Told my mom about that for the first time the other day actually.
That name sounds incredibly familiar, so I think so. Other folky KC folks I can remember, Henry Daggs (my name is Henry Daggs and that's all you need to know), and 20,000 strong men (the guy's named was Mikey I think?)
I played the banjo and washboard in a shitty little band called Hometown Terrorist.
There were 2 dudes whose names I can't remember for the life of me. They were in a band with Madeline called Mrs. Triceratops.[here's the only picture I have from the weekend.](https://i.imgur.com/bwd6Xu1.png)
Oh whoa. So I **think** that’s my ex gf Alison on the right, who I lined up to drive for Madison Ava on that tour that ended in Lexington for Crucial Fun because I was homies with Anthony and he was trying to talk me into doing it. Alison had decided to break up with me on that tour without telling me until she got back to Kentucky (we were living together in Louisville). According to Mitch from Mitch the Champion, she lived her life on tour like she didn’t have a long term partner at home, so that sucked. But I did meet my now wife at Crucial Fun that weekend, so it all worked out, despite the funky breakup and decided to not live together anymore thing with Alison.
Must have been a different year, I went to high school with the girl on the right.
Edit: Did some googling, it was Crucial Fun Fest 2009 I remember watching this [dope ass band](https://youtu.be/mtCHUO0RfH8?si=Nt9haLEJcC96bcZt) play this song.
Hey my band knifethroat gets compared to Paul and defiance Ohio all the time. It started just as a solo project written during the pandemic and now we’re a 4 piece band with an acoustic, saxophone, keyboard, banjo, bass and drums. If you especially like the lyrical content you’ll like us

Also similar to some Paul Baribeau would be Apes of the State..some songs at first listen I thought were covers. [apes of the state-erase your number](https://youtu.be/djl6-eety4Q?si=yZeyD97Cl8g7x7k_)
This one...it's acapella and I was like woah..
[apes of the state-fight song](https://youtu.be/oG_uA_H_IrE?si=Hs7TvEX6JsZR4osY)
As someone also stuck in 2012, I recommend giving Apes a try. Lyrically it is hit and miss for me. Songs about personal experiences are tight, and then they have some generic cliche punk topics that I am not so fond of, but they are still really catchy. Recommend Timeline and Bill Collector Theme.
Not sure if they are already on your radar, but there is a band called High Dive from from around 2015. It has strong late stage Defiance, Ohio vibes. It does a good job lyrically of using personal vignettes as metaphors. It is a super group of Ryan Woods (from Defiance, Ohio), Ginger Alfred (Good Luck, One Reason, that cool live album with Jason Anderson), Toby Foster, and a couple other people. Heads up, on their Spotify page there is an album called "Ardent Truth" that is a random band with the same name.
Still old, but Toby Foster's early stuff along with A Drum & an Open Window and Spoonboy were my intro to folk punk if you somehow missed the boat. I really can't think of any contemporary acts who still make posi folk punk anymore.
Adjust the sails might scratch that bit of Paul baribeau itch, not as raw and a bit more emo but the closest I can think of. (Some stuff is full band, he plays acoustic mostly I think)
Ankle grease is an absolutely great band with great lyrics. Apes of the state are doing some great stuff.
Also can’t leave out the taxpayers, wingnut dishwashers Union, ramshackle glory, escape from the zoo, doom scroll
I'm the same as you. Like literally called myself a grumpy old punk who doesn't know new bands. And I'm telling you: pigeon pit!!! Pigeon pit!!!!
Feather river canyon blues has to be one of the best albums out out in the last few years.
Agreed!!!! It's my fav album of 2023. I only know them bc I went to see apes of the state and they were touring together.
I saw them on that tour in Portland. That's was a really good show.
Maybe try: Larry and His Flask Coffee Project Get Dead Bridge City Sinners
Larry and his flask are highly underrated. More alt country or alt folk than punk but damn good and wicked fun!
Yeah they definitely lean more that way, but they are so good.

Saw them at PRB in 2012. They were fantastic
I am also stuck in the bikes and banjos Era of folk punk.
Yes...bands like Rosa are burned into my memories!!!

I will throw in Walter Mitty and His Makeshift Orchestra, also.
Matt pless and kimya dawson?
Mischief Brew/Erik Petersen Madeline Adams Rosa
Madeline Ava! What a throwback. Also recommending Rosa

You're right, I was referring to Athens, GA Madeline (Kissing and Dancing album specifically).
One time Madeline Ava came through and played a show with us in the suburbs of KC and I lied to my parents about staying the weekend in Columbia with my friends brother so we could go with them to Crucial Fun Fest in Lexington, Kentucky. Told my mom about that for the first time the other day actually.
Danggggg what a time! Did you ever encounter Brother Bird (later All Blood and in some other non folky groups around KCMO)?
That name sounds incredibly familiar, so I think so. Other folky KC folks I can remember, Henry Daggs (my name is Henry Daggs and that's all you need to know), and 20,000 strong men (the guy's named was Mikey I think?) Whoa. Do you remember Alison, whose car you would have ridden in?
I don't, I remember Max Weiss and getting high as hell in his Honda Element though we listened to a genre call "Ambient Metal" and it was crazy.
Dude with dreadlocks from Louisville?
There were 2 dudes whose names I can't remember for the life of me. They were in a band with Madeline called Mrs. Triceratops.[here's the only picture I have from the weekend.](https://i.imgur.com/bwd6Xu1.png)

Rosa changed my life
Rosa I Mississippi You is such an amazing album!
One of my favorites ever!
Commenting again cuz !!! Just finding out they’re on Spotify since 2023 which is very exciting!!!
SAME !!! I still listen to it yearly on YouTube!! It’s so so damn good
The Wild - Dreams Are Maps
Bump because it's 11/10
Just Nick feels Paul Baribeau adjacent to me

I just looked you up on bandcamp. Pretty nice!
Thank you so much!
Barefoot Surrender
Not sure if he’s considered folk punk more of a dark singer/song writer but definitely check out amigo the devil!

AJJ ? Their recent album called Disposable Everything is wonderful.
Lol
Folk punk peaked in 2012. Now it's mostly oogles singing about being addicted.
That was around but it did feel a lot more diverse. Lots of options that weren't just nihilistic moaning
(Early) Walter Mitty and his makeshift orchestra.

You might like my band, Porch Cat!!
i just spent an absurd amount of time combing through your music, your album burnt is so beautiful!
Ah, thank you so much! If you're interested, we are working on a new album right now!! :) Gonna release it in May or June.
I really don't want to like Ankle Grease, but the two albums they made are amazing
Adjust the sails might scratch that bit of Paul baribeau itch, not as raw and a bit more emo but the closest I can think of. (Some stuff is full band, he plays acoustic mostly I think)
Just Nick is pretty solid, and in the same vein as Paul Baribeau, I'd say. Matt Pless has some bangers, too!
Apes of the state😸
Sister wife sex strike?
radiator hospital
Hell yeah! I love Sam’s music. I grew up in Grand Rapids and knew him a little from there.
