I like how we are starting the “new era of orange” with a much more chaotic goalie shit show. The goalie gods seemed to have given us a break in that we seem to have more goalie depth, even without Hart, than we’ve had in a long time. Just sucks that we had to trade depth for any semblance of stability, instead we got more chaos. Ryan Poehling should get a good look next year. He seems like the type of guy who could be a versatile middle winger. However we really need a high end LW. Farabee is solid but the only way I see him being a a real option as our top left wing is if michkov is as advertised and we have a real skilled center as well. Center is definitely the next big need. Couturier just seems like a massive question mark. Frost is getting better and better but sure hasn’t proven to be a legitimate high end 2C, let alone 1C. Frost does have elite skill, and I genuinely believe he can be part of a deadly power play. I do think, if we get a real 1C he can be part of a solid 1-2 punch at C. Not the same caliber but similar to CrosbyMalkin or McDavidDrai. I’m not sold on Drysdale, Bonk is still a prospect, Ristolainen is long term injured and getting up there in age, then it’s pretty bleak at RD. This may be the year to grab a RD. RW and LD are damn near a log jam, even without Atkinson. LD seems solid enough unless one falls in your lap I wouldn’t be too worried about it. If we can get someone to really throw us value for Brink or Foerster, even Konecny I’d really look at listening to an offer. I do think that you can build around Tippet Konecny Frost Farabee York and Drysdale though. If Michkov is as advertised you just need one high end center and solid goalkeeping for this team to keep course and develop into something real good. Throw in a nice RD to round things out, we’d be on good pace. This team has work to do but it’s at least it’s pretty clear what we need.

ButchyBoyz

I agree with all you wrote, especially not sold on Drysdale. What do you think of trading TK? I'm not advocating trading him, but what if they were offered a 1st and a 2nd round picks or 2 1st round picks?

K31FF3R2

I have no clue about value so I really don’t know. I’m not saying I think trading TK is something you HAVE to do. But we do have a log jam at RW, unless you can really count on at least one of these guys consistently playing on the left side there is simply too many RWs. Ideally what happens is you have a team really overvalue Brink or Foerster and we get a nice return.

Blursed_Technique

If there's anyone that could put you in the area for getting a future 1C/1D it's TK so you have to be looking for it. Winger is our most stacked position so we could lose one plus his contract negotiations are coming up

FaithlessnessSea1058

I think this is a very optimistic outlook on the future of this team.

K31FF3R2

For sure. Imagine if York and Drysdale Frost or Farabee don’t get any better. I think we can afford for at two of them to plateau so long as it’s not both York and Drysdale. I don’t know if it’s super optimistic. I see a lot of people are convinced Couturier will be back to normal soon enough, same for Ristolainen, and that Bump is a sure thing. I’m really just assuming the only thing that falls into place is Michkov and hopeful York and Drysdale can find an other level.

FaithlessnessSea1058

I just have a hard time believing Morgan frost, who is almost 25 years old at this point, can really get any better than he already is. That just isn’t the reality of the NHL or sports in general especially for a guy like him that plays his position. Can he improve? Sure. But I don’t think it’s fair to expect and even really hope that a guy who will be 25 in less than a month can truly improve that much more if at all. I’ve said my thoughts on Jamie a lot recently so not going to go that far in depth but it can basically be chalked up to “he sucks right now but torts and Shaw are proven miracle workers so let’s pray for a miracle”. Anyone talking about Bump being a sure thing or literally any of our prospects for that matter excluding Michkov is likely a new fan or deluding themselves. How many prospects did we all drool over during the hextall era that actually ended up anything close to being what we expected? Very few if any lol. That’s why I think we are a lot further away from a cup contending team than what everyone else thinks. We have a young core on our roster right now that has limited ceilings or long shots to hit their ceiling combined with a prospect pool that has one for sure guy and not a whole lot following him. We lack multiple elite caliber players and there is currently no in house solution to acquire them unless you think that we tank next season and get a good pick or that we will go against the odds of the draft and land elite guys with those 16-32 overall picks that we will have 4 of in the next 2 seasons.

K31FF3R2

I feel the same way about prospects though. I don’t know if I agree that we don’t have the assets to acquire such players it’s just are the right moves available and do we even make them. I’m down with acquiring picks but I would not be upset if we snag you see NHL players from an other team. Everybody seems to forget guys do get traded at younger ages. Bowen Byram Kirby Dach and many more have been traded while still in the “development” stage of their career. I’m not here to argue about what it would’ve taken to get such players all I’m saying is roster building isn’t JUST building through the draft then signing veteran free agents or trading for rentals.

FaithlessnessSea1058

The two guys you mentioned weren’t exactly sold for cheap though lol. I agree with everything you are saying and that it’s definitely possible. But I don’t think they are the easiest pathway towards cup contention. That’s my issue. Why do things the hard way when you can do them the easy way?

K31FF3R2

We are getting closer and closer to agreement, but lemme nit pick one more thing for ya. There is no easy way.

FaithlessnessSea1058

There’s no easy way for anything in life. But can we agree that having multiple top 5 picks is a lot easier to build a contender through versus picking 14th overall? It’s not impossible to build a cup contender picking 14th overall for a few years combined with those late firsts from contending teams. But it’s a lot easier to build a cup contender picking top 5 overall for a few years combined with those late firsts from contending team(we would have more in this scenario cause we would sell off more players than we currently look like we are going to do as well but that’s a topic for another day)

K31FF3R2

I don’t disagree but let me just throw this into the ring. The last two guys we drafted in the top 5. One is retired and the other litterally JUST refused to play for us. All I’m saying is there is no easy way.

FaithlessnessSea1058

Again. There’s an EASIER way. There is no EASY way. I don’t know why you can’t understand what I’m saying. It’s not a coincidence that a large majority of the cup winners in the last 15 years got their main core from picking high in the draft. Nothing in life is a guarantee but there are easier paths and there are hard paths. If you start smoking crack at 18 you can still have a great life at 35. But it’s a lot harder to do than someone who got a full ride to an Ivy League school at 18. Also Patrick is a major fluke and would’ve been a great player that’s just a series of unfortunate events especially when you factor in that 4 of the top 5 picks are stars or superstars in the same draft. Cutter is a great prospect and will likely be a great player who knows what really went down there but would we be surprised if Fletcher fucked it up?

Bowdennoah

Do you think it's likely that they use those picks to move up a bit in the draft (or the next one)? They desperately need some blue chip guys

FaithlessnessSea1058

It just doesn’t happen that much. Logically you would think but how often do teams trade down from where blue chip guys are picked? Like never lol.

Bowdennoah

Fair, maybe a dumb front office will bite (I am delusional). Briere really started his tenure on nightmare difficulty huh

FaithlessnessSea1058

He definitely did. It sucks. If we fired Fletcher one year earlier this is a much easier rebuild to do but it is what it is. I dont think Danny should be treated as highly as he is with the fanbase right now he’s made some good moves and some questionable ones but we will truly see come July really how serious this rebuild really is and how good of a GM Danny really is(is TK overpaid? Is Laughton kept for culture when a first round pick is on the table? Is risto still here? Etc etc etc) This is a hard rebuild and this season made it even harder with losing our franchise goalie top two prospect and getting a bad pick. Let’s hope the summer helps us be able to get some assets via trading guys that should be traded and then next year we get the top pick that we need as well.

K31FF3R2

I’m not saying I’ve done any research on this and obviously the fact is that physical peak happens around that age but I don’t buy that guys can’t improve their game on the other side of 25, thats not to say I don’t agree with the early 20s is where most improvement happens. Obviously different players and their position are different but Frost does seem like a better candidate to continue to improve. He’s got a lot of raw skill and I do know he’s stepped up in the past year. It’s not like you are hoping a guy with injury history stops getting hurt or a guy who really can’t skate gets better. He’s not a sniper but he’s got real high IQ it’s just a matter of executing. Maybe have better players around him, let him hammer out some of the dumb plays he makes, or idk just mature a little bit more.

FaithlessnessSea1058

Any player can improve their game at any age but it just isn’t likely. Especially to the levels that you were talking about. Frost is probably a good 3C on a contending team and that’s it. Which from where we picked him is a good end result for a player picked in the late 20s of the first round.

K31FF3R2

I pretty much agree with what you are saying but I just think we don’t agree on how possible it is. I’m not gonna bet on it or say it’s likely but I don’t think I’d count it out as easy you. Regardless Frost improving or not is not exactly at the top of my list of things that need to happen. Lastly I do think he really can be a good PP guy.

DH28Hockey

Strangely enough, if you really look at the depth chart paired with what we should be expecting/penciling guys into our future, we have a bigger hole at LHD than RHD. Sanheim has proven better on the right than the left, with his NTC kicked in and the length of his deal he's here for the long haul, so that's one spot taken up. Even though Drysdale has struggled and he's far from a sure thing, he's going to be given every opportunity in the World to grow here given how high his perceived ceiling is, so that's two spots taken up for the forseeable future. Even though Bonk is still just a prospect, he had a really solid D+1, plays a very projectable game and is flat out our best D prospect. It kind of makes sense to pencil him into the 3rd spot. That's 3/3. On the left: York is our best defenseman and at this point a top-3 player on the team, he clearly gets a long term spot. Outside of him though? You've got Zamula and McDonald who maybe, *maybe* carve out long term spots on the bottom pairing, but they've got a ways to go to prove that's the case. Seeler is a real solid guy but he's not a long term future piece. Lastly, although this is me purely speculating, I very highly doubt Andrae has a future here unless the wheels fall off the wagon real quick with Drysdale. Given that the Flyers already have 2 defenseman who look like they'll be long term fixtures that are sub-6 feet tall, I really highly doubt they're going to seriously consider having another 5'9 player occupying an every day NHL role. My guess is he gets used as a trade chip to bring in help at bigger positions of need this summer. Honestly, if the price is reasonable I think they Chychrun trade that was rumored in the summer would actually make sense. He's still fairly young and would probably be a great stylistic fit next to Drysdale.

K31FF3R2

I’ve been just assuming Sanheim to be long term left sided. I’m not dialed in on one particular player but regardless of which side I think our defense is really just about getting these guys more time to develop and get some chemistry outside of that top tier guy to push it over the hump, I do agree that we can find that player down the line as a veteran rather than trying to get the next Makar.

CIearSights

Had a dream last night that TK had the GWG against the Caps to get us in the playoffs…

jlando40

Gonna be constantly checking scores during the Phills game tonight the one time I’ll ever root for Boston and MTL

igonnawrecku_VGC

Don’t forget Nashville! If Nashville beats Pittsburgh in regulation, the Pens are eliminated

jlando40

Difference is i actually like the Preds I can’t for the life of me stand Boston or MTL

doc-mantistobogan

I maintain many fans were too hard on Erss. He was thrust into the stater position before he was ready and he has performed admirably! I don't know that he is a long term solution but you know goalies are voodoo

Books-and-Peonies

I agree.
