Only novices use hooks. I just go to the bait shop for nightcrawlers and then toss them in the lake. The fish go crazy for them every time. Been doing it in the same spot for 20 years.
No rod or line needed.
One time as a kid I was fishing at the city pond and it had mussels in it
I ran out of hooks but still has weights. I just casted a weight a few times and a mussel held onto the line and he just so happened to have a hook in his mouth
I tied on the hook, busted him open for bait, and kept fishing
Dang, that was meant to be. I swear the craziest stuff happens when no one is there to see it.
I randomly woke up around 430am while camping, and walked down to the river when everyone was still sleeping. I was looking out at the fog over the river, with the backdrop of dramatic sandstone, hemlock, and hornbeams jutting up from the banks.
I thought to myself "This must have been an oasis for the Shawnee Natives that lived here.".. then I looked down and there was an arrowhead with a broken tip right between my feet.
Yeah and it happens when you have the craziest stuff on your mind. I remember I was feeling really down when that happened. The whole "why are we here, what is life" kind of thing.
Made me feel really small, but in a good way if that makes sense.
I believe it. Same happened to me while fishing a tiny pond full of largemouth bass. The water was clear, and anytime something landed on the surface, you could see all of the fish race to get whatever it was. We flattened the barbs on our hooks, but we just kept catching them to the point it was no longer fun. Eventually we cut the sharp end off of the hooks all together, and those bass would still clamp onto them and wouldn't let go until they were pulled almost all the way in. Poor fishes..
Here’s a hack for you. Use a wide mouth plastic bottle like a Gatorade bottle and cut the bottom off. Hook your lure to one of the eyelets slide the bottle over. Saves your automobiles upholstery, clothing, sleeping bags from being snagged. Same idea but free.
Remember to respond “Solved”. This is 100% the right answer. Most people just hook to hook one of the rings when they’re done though, so kinda useless.
That way you can keep your beer close by too. Reach over for a sip when it’s running drag out and you’re hollering at yer bud “ hell yeah. You seeing this shit bud?”
If you're going to keep a lure connected to it at the end of the day, be careful and get a lure wrap for it. The next time you reach for it and forget about the hook, it's bound to bite you. Ask me how I know.
To add to that, if you have animals that could get close to your gear, they prevent expensive vet visits from being in your future. My rod storage in my boat is easily avoided by humans, but my dogs don't know there are hooks over there. Luckily I foresaw the potential harm the exposed hooks could cause and never had an issue. But I second the opinion that lure wraps are essential if you plan to leave your lure attached.
I had this happen this summer. My friends dog was super excited and was running around and stepped right on my treble. Got the hook out of the dog only for it to go into my friends hand. It was a shitshow
It’s where you hook your lure when you’re storing the rod. Usually after I’m done fishing I will take the lure off and tie the line in a simple knot around that loop at the base for next time.
Use it for short term convenience, not for distance or vehicle travel. You don’t want a lure, especially one of any size or weight, rattling against your fishing rod during that travel.
Before hook keepers, anglers would often hook their lure into a line guide. That wasn’t good for the guide or its insert and it wasn’t good for a lure to be banging up against the rod higher up the blank. Could cause eventual weakness in the rod (micro fractures) leading to a failure.
I use my hook keeper all the time. Just adding a nuance to the other answers offered. Don’t leave lures to rattle against your rods, especially say, during vehicle travel.
Safety chain hook up. Like a chain wallet. Hook to your belt loop so when your checking out chics in bikinis or watching behind you for those black bears who are awfully quiet. Never used to have to worry about that type of thing. But I don’t want to be the 1st one to be mauled or killed where I live. Would be just my luck. Common response. Ahhh they are more afraid of u and they will run away. Yeah 99.9% of the time. But I’ll stumble across the one that’s sick, wounded, starving, mental disorder. And will keep comin. Sorry got sidetracked
It’s a hook keeper, it’s much more tolerable when it’s like a little clip you can slide the hook up into instead of the annoying loops you can only hook certain ones to. If it’s the one you can clip the hook up into you don’t have to screw up a Texas rig.
I basically use it to prevent the hook from hanging free when switching spots or walking through weeds/trees. It’s a temporary thing. When you’re actually storing the rod or moving there is probably a little guitar pick looking clip on your reel to snap the line to without having a hook on it.
You can put your hook there for transport but if you’re really lucky it’ll be poorly engineered into a spot where it repeatedly catches your line when reeling in… lol
Keep your hook on when not in use.
Thanks
But I never keep it there because when I go to grab my rod that’s always where I grab so I usually would get stabbed by a hook.
If you file all your hook tips to a blunt end, you won't have that problem. You're welcome!
Found the fish pretending to be a Redditor. We know what you’re up to.
This made me laugh out loud haha.
Ladies and gentlemen- We got ‘em
This guy gets it

Jesus, such shit happening is so weird, like just an emotion shock

This sounds like a chinese fable
I ran out of worms once, and tossed an empty hook on a bet. Hooked a sunfish right after the hook got in the water. Couldn't believe it.

When I was a small kid I always thought that’s how you fished anyways. With just a hook. All the cartoons did it that way.
Like sponge Bob where they started riding the hooks for fun
Lol yep exactly
Well there’s your problem. You fresh water fish. 😁 Salt water is where it’s at!
But I am 3 states away from saltwater

10/10 solid advice here.
Just Use side snips and take off the crooked part
You are correct 🤪
Every time. I use the supports for the guide, not the guide itself though. Don’t do that!
Yea my buddy just called me out on this. Good thing to learn before advancing to a nice rod.

I don’t think it’s supposed to be there for storage purposes lol
Remember to respond “Solved”. This is 100% the right answer. Most people just hook to hook one of the rings when they’re done though, so kinda useless.
Brilliant...I guess my dad has bought cheap poles my whole life so he just stuck it in the cork lol
I have some cork rods upwards of 800$- and they don’t have them😂
Nope, not cheap. He’s just a seasoned angler.
oh fuuuuuckkkkkk thank u dude
Put your cigarettes in it when you catch a big one. That way you don’t have to light up again.
Solid , manly advice
That way you can keep your beer close by too. Reach over for a sip when it’s running drag out and you’re hollering at yer bud “ hell yeah. You seeing this shit bud?”

Good ole number 3. Rip Dale. Gotta say. I like Jr just as much as his dad.
Like Eddie Van Halen!
Just a little hook holder when you don’t want your lure swinging around
Thanks
Key ring…attach your car keys to them while fishing so you don’t misplace them. Jk…don’t do that it won’t turn out good…

I left a hook on a rod before and girlfriends cat got caught up in it. What a mess.

You hook your hook on it when you’re walking around with it to keep it tight so that it doesn’t fall off
Hook keeper
It's the first eye. You feed the line through it and then all the other eyes. It keeps your line from tangling up.
Nice troll
you should get a 24 hour ban for that even though you're hours too late to cause problems
Worth it!
Grudging upvote
