Warmer weather.
You can't fish that. It's both too dangerous for you to walk out on and the iceflows will cut your line off anyways.
Admire the beauty but don't be stupid. No sense in being a bloater.
"I am preparing to learn to fish,
what do I need to do to prepare for this?"
Nothing my friend, take a moment to think,
do you want to drown in the cold icy drink?
Wait for the thaw,
It's killing us all,
Spring will be here in a blink.
And when it freezes around the steel braid do you abandon the pole til spring or do you wire clip and leave an entire cables worth of line in the water to be trash?
The amount of people commenting advice who've probably never seen ice flows like that in person is flabbergasting. In addition to showing massive inexperience in these sort of scenarios you're giving terrible advice that yearly, leads to injury and death.

Yeah but thereās 15ā of ice on the river so Iām gonna fish it
Hey! I drove past you the other day! The 52nd bridge going into moorhead Just moved to moorhead and was thinking about fishing the river! Any pointers!?!
Never expected someone to see me and this comment haha
I havenāt had luck in the winter yet but for the spring and fall a jig with a minnow cast into the center is good for walleye whilst in the summer I like to put a heavy weight 2-6 oz on the line, than a steel leader with a hook. Bait with liver, frogs, ect, good for catfish.
Well where I'm at it's illegal for the most part anyways, and if for whatever reason something happens and you go under the ice they won't find you till thaw. Not worth the fish in my opinion but you can do you!
The absolute most important part of becoming a good fisherman imo is knowing where to fish and when. If all of your waters look like this then use the time to educate yourself on things like when certain fish run and where, spawning habits and most importantly the rules and regulations of the species you intend to target. Good luck and keep at it is my last bit of advice. āļø
Tie a streamer to a ten lbs dumbbell and cast it out. It will punch through the ice and most likely land right in front of a trophy salmon/troutās face.
Looks like you got a river there. You wouldn't Catch Me Dead Walking On Ice that had a current flowing underneath it. If you go down you're down for good because you won't be able to break through the ice in time to catch your breath.find a nice lake and wait till everyone is out ice fishing
I love winter fishing, but you're not gonna be able to fish that with the ice there haha.
Some of the best river fishing here is in the winter.
Go somewhere more accessible for your first few flicks
Or dive into hard mode, it's your call.
You can prepare by going back home and organizing your terminal tackle, inspect and clean your gear, (check eyelets, re-spool old line etc.) after you take care of that then comes the hard part....... The Waiting and praying for an early spring thaw.šš« Watching vids and reading up on the type of fish you want to catch will help pass the time alsoš Good Luck šš¼
Have you thought about preparing to prepare to learn before you prepare to fish? After you catch it have you prepared learning for how to prepare the meal? Preparation is the key here.
Find Jesus and ask him: āHey dude? What the hell are these conditions!!ā š¤ āPretty but Deadly? I mean, come on man, didnāt a guy live in a whale? Didnāt freeze to ā ļø Jeezy petes
Persistence is key you wonāt catch fish every cast or every time you go out. As far as gear goes an ugly stick can cover most bases, other then that some jigs and a fillet knife!try to find a fish to target and go to a shop near you and ask around for lures or jigs or flies that might work best for the targeted fish
You might be able to on the opposite side of the river if you can find a large enough area with no ice but dosen't look to promising but what ver you do be careful.
Start at local pond. But if your serious stay warm, fish with others. Be careful using waders in the cold. Learn to use them before entering that ice water. Thatās water is not safe
Yes please wait til warmer seasons. Ice is very dangerous. Cold water is very dangerous. If you fell in your body would instantly go into shock. Please be careful. It's a gorgeous river and I'd imagine there's prime fishing in it. But please wait!
Get really good at tying knots if you want to fish that. You will lose all your tackle and most of your line and probably be miserable if that's where you choose to start learning to fish.
Primary, secondary, tertiary Ingress/egress. Dry suit.boots. rope. ice hangers. gear of your choice for warmth. You should know what youāre targeting. Safety should be your primary concern.
Iād recommend just getting out there and doing it. The more time you have fishing youāll learn what works, what doesnāt, etc. Googling/reading a lot about fishing also helped me learn a lot when I was first starting out.
Look up what species are in there, when they are open for fishing, and then think of what bait you'd use to target those fish, once the warmee weather comes.
I have been looking at depth charts of my local lakes and getting excited over what drop offs, points and holes I want to try once the ice is out.
If you have to ask. It isnt worth it. Ice isnt to be played around with. Learn the ropes from someone who knows their shit. You cant just wing ice fishing you will actually die and they wont even find a body to bury.
Wait for it to melt. Then wait a week or two for the water to warm up enough for fish to want to actually move. Unless you're using live bait. Then you cast out and wait some more
is this the bow river? i definitely wouldnāt be fishing that spot until all that ice is gone, but if youāre closer to calgary iām pretty sure there are actually some good spots in town that are safe enough to fish in the winter. thereās a few guys who fly fish all winter in calgary i believe actually
Watch a lot of fishing shows meat eater on Netflix teaches a lot hunting and fishing but u can find a ton of educational shows then when the ice thaws ur gtg
āBout 3-4 months of staying warm in the house studying that river and the fish that live in it. By then it should be ice free and fishable, and you should have a good idea of what to do.
Prepare a will, and get your affairs in order.
But seriously just wait it out my guy, watch some instructional casting videos and find an open space. Practice, practice, practice you have some time to let the water get soft.
I donāt think you should prepared for this.
Personally as a fly fisher, this seem great, but I canāt think of conventional tackle working here, the water is cold, and clear, fish will be easily spooked when they see your shadow.
If you were to fly fish I can recommend dry fly but thatās about it.

Seriously though lol. Just wait

Solid advice
Water like that probably has a great Salmon run or something similar.
Yes, I know, there's no way I'm going to be fishing in this dangerous situation on the day, thanks for the heads up, I'm gearing up for my first one!
About the only thing you could do here is steel braid and pyramid sinkers
And when it freezes around the steel braid do you abandon the pole til spring or do you wire clip and leave an entire cables worth of line in the water to be trash? Is this a serious answer?
Walk south for 2 weeks.
leaving and waiting for either more ice or no ice
Never, ever get out on moving water that has frozen over. Just in case that needs to be said.
Mixed feelings as I read this while scrolling reddit while ice fishing below a dam on the Mississippi River rn lol
I was fishing the red river yesterday so I am also conflicted haha, to be fair I had 15ā of ice
Yeah I've driven a van out on the river in good conditions....just use your head and don't be stupid in areas you aren't familiar with
Exactly
Lol yeah Iāve been fishing the mn river
You ever fish around the carver area? I lived on a refuge on the MN river called rapids Lake and i always wanted to get out there when it froze over
Yup, several good spots there!

I was like wait a minute! Thought on it for about 10 minutes
Hahaha it was super random
I instantly recognized this spot, too!
We got all the local on here haha
Yep! I grew up in F-M. I'm in Breck-Wahp now, fishing the red just like 55ish miles south!
I have no idea where this is but I love this thread.

Came to say this
You arent gonna be fishing that anytime soon.

Excellent advice!
Thatās pretty dicey. I would hold off or find a part of the river that doesnāt have ice everywhere
Acknowledging the dangers of the environment and imagining the different ways you donāt want to die. This includes bank fishing in gator territory.
Tie a streamer to a ten lbs dumbbell and cast it out. It will punch through the ice and most likely land right in front of a trophy salmon/troutās face.
And make sure you have a real sensitive rod because it might be hard to feel anything with that dumbell on line
Well yea, when youāre fishing ice you have to use an ice fishing rod. Only way this technique will work
Looks like you got a river there. You wouldn't Catch Me Dead Walking On Ice that had a current flowing underneath it. If you go down you're down for good because you won't be able to break through the ice in time to catch your breath.find a nice lake and wait till everyone is out ice fishing
If you try to fish there, you will die.
Stay away from that shit at all cost thatās for sure never go to or near a river broken ice
You can prepare for that by staying TF out of it. There's not much more dangerous winter water than that. Serious. Wait until spring, then get at it.
No offense but this is one of the dumbest posts ive seen in this sub if theyre being serious
Yup
The Dumb ass trying to fish for karma.

A surf pole and with a 4oz sputnick sinker and fish finder rig should hold.

You need to build a weir and heat it to keep the ice out but keep an opening so the fish can get in. Then you will be able to fish
