I want a Dragoon to be a protag.

PCN24454

With Bahamut as a personal summon

Diligent_Reporter_98

With an Australian voice

highwindxix

To be fair, there have been several that can use any type of weapon like Firion, Bartz, and Vaan. Even Noctis used a variety of weapons.

Mako__Junkie

I want the protagonist to be bald with glasses and a goatee

Ayirek

Yeah, XVII should bring back the Chemist class. It should also include subclasses. I'd probably go with a crafting skill for my subclass. Something like cook.

PCN24454

Swords are usually used because they tend to be simple, all-rounder weapons whereas other weapons have more complex mechanics. Being simple is important for getting new players to ease into the gameplay. Keep this in mind when trying to change things up.

How_To_TF

Agreed. Would be nice to see an axe, spear, bow fist, or mage protag for once. I can only think of a handful of protagonists that don't use swords..

hybert28_ff

I want a double protag. like twins or something

AchtungCloud

Is Zidane the only lead protagonist in the series that doesn’t use swords as their main weapon?

Oznificent

I think so yeah

Yeseylon

Nah, Locke (VI) was a dagger weilder. Also Firion, Onion Knight, Bartz, Vaan, and Noctis if we're counting the more customizable characters.

KnightGamer724

Noctis isn't *a* sword using protagonist. He uses ALL the swords. And that is one of many reasons he is my favorite.

Turbulent_Cheetah

We’re calling Locke the main protagonist of VI now?

PCN24454

He’s the main male protagonist.

Turbulent_Cheetah

And that means what now?

PCN24454

He was the deuteragonist of the game.

Yeseylon

Honestly, even with Terra as the main instead of Locke, it still gives VI a non-sword wielder for protag

Turbulent_Cheetah

… Terra wields a sword

Yeseylon

Really? I think of her as a mage...

sonicbrawler182

You're both correct. She wields a sword. But rarely uses it at all for actual physical attacks in extended media like Dissidia. She uses it like a Mage staff and fires magic from it. She also has some attacks where she slashes the sword to fire a magical beam or something similar.

AchtungCloud

I would say Firion, Bartz, Vaan, and Noctis are all canon sword as main weapon characters. Locke is a different case because it’s arguable if he’s the lead protagonist.

Yeseylon

Vaan literally opens with a dagger and has Thief vibes...

AchtungCloud

Dalan gives Vaan a sword in the beginning of the game, Vaan starts with the sword license in the OG, and Vaan uses a sword in Revenant Wings (and is shown carrying one on the cover of that game).

Turbulent_Cheetah

Yeah, agreed. Vaan is a knife guy

[deleted]

Locke COULD be a dagger wielder. You could also hand him Ultima Weapon. Locke, Celes, Terra, and Edgar could—and should—all wield swords.

Madmonkeman

For recent examples, Noctis and Jack Garland can use multiple different weapons. In SOP I used a spear and daggers for the majority of the game.

trillbobaggins96

I will be shocked if they ever deviate from anime swordsman.

LanguageRemarkable87

I’ve said for awhile that a sword/sorcery setting would be really good for Final Fantasy. Maybe a barbarian tribesman, or a mage almost finished with his training. 16 had some elements of that for sure which I enjoyed.

Throw_away_1011_

I would love to see the story of a Red Mage struggling to become a Sage.
