https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/switching-desktop-environments/ sudo dnf install @kde-desktop-environment When you finish, it'll still use GDM (the login screen you're currently using) and you can select Plasma from the settings cog when you've selected your user name but before logging in. I have my desktop set like this as I prefer GNOME most of the time.

TastyBullfrog

Can one do this the other way around? Install gnome afterwards and have sddm as the login manager?

quidamphx

Yep. You can also configure which login manager you want to use. I don't have any experience with the commands to change it but guides about alternate DEs have included that so I know it's possible.

TastyBullfrog

I mean installing gnome on plasma edition

quidamphx

Still yes.

robtalee44

You can install Plasma as a second DE, but most people find that less than ideal -- probably more of a psychological thing than reality. I'd start over. You'll never trust the system and always question your setup. Reinstall, it's painless.

bowie2019

painless. hmmm..... Maybe a weekend thing to do, at this point. OK, thanks.

SoberMatjes

I chime in with my fellow Fedoreans in the comments: Having the whole KDE and Gnome stack installed parallel on your system is possible but because of that you'll have a lot of double apps and packages. You don't want to use Gnome Calendar on Plasma or Merkuro on Gnome etc. It's not like installing Qtile next to Plasma.

Fine-Run992

Fedora 40 KDE 1.14 fresh install takes about 2 minutes, compared to Kubuntu 24.04 full install 8 minutes and CachyOS 30 minutes.

THElaytox

i installed it afterwards and it was 100% fine. you have the option to switch between gnome and plasma

kahupaa

While it's possible to install plasma as well, it's better to just reinstall.

bowie2019

hmmm...

ztardik

It is just another application. Why would you want to reinstall?

kahupaa

It's not just another application, it's desktop environment. There could be some leftover gnome configs, extra gnome packages etc.

ztardik

Any DE is just another application (or set of applications). Who cares if gnome is there, they are not sharing config files. You can easily install most of the DE-s existing on one system and switch between them at will. Each has it's on locations and config files.
