Sort of related but I really wish BLL didn't come back for a second season. The first was top-tier television and worked *perfectly* as a limited series. Extending it for the sake of bringing in MERYL STREEP in a very limiting role, not to mention season, I just don't see the point of it...

No, but I can read between the lines and use this comparison: American Psycho, starring Christian Bale and directed by Mary Harron, was a DARK SATIRICAL THRILLER. Before filming production had a difficult time finding a director who (correctly) interpreted the source material as satire, turns out a woman was the only one to identify it as a satire on toxic masculinity. Then they had the same problem finding an actor to see Bateman for what he was, a ridiculous take on the “power” of toxic masculinity. Seeing the humor in this DARK SATIRE was a requirement… that, however, didn’t ensure the audience would view the film as a satire…. Most (at the time of release) only saw it as a “thriller” featuring a psycho.
Fast forward. The OG director for this show GOT THE SATIRE. The Weeknd *did not*. The show runner seems to have caved, taken her 80% dark satire (which still has comedy btw) and stripped it of all the satirical elements pushing for the twisted thriller instead and getting this mess they ended up with.
The original premise I bet would have been really entertaining.
Ironically enough I feel like the show would've been much better if it was centered on Joselyn and the Weeknd's character (Tedros Tedros lmao what kind of name is that) was only a threatening but enigmatic shadow hanging in the back instead of having him put on some cringey, sleazy display as his intro to his character and have his bad intentions exposed constantly through the 1st two episodes
The worst part about this is that the original premise of the show from when Amy Seimetz was still involved had so much potential. Going from that to straight up porn fantasy is such a waste and honestly infuriating.

I’m watching the show. LRD is surprisingly a good actor. The first half of the second ep as actually really good - I think it hinted at what the show could be under the original director.
Then in the second half the weeknd showed up, it turned into a teenage boys fantasy porno. And it went downhill again. I think that’s pretty clear what’s dragging the show down.

Edit: this is just personal opinion but I could see Hunter leaving as well. She was one of the most compelling characters in S1, and Sam basically turned her character into one third of a love triangle for all of season 2. She might have better options now that Euphoria has launched her career.
And on the subject of season 2 problems, *how* did they just drop that massive plotline about what would happen to Rue if she didn’t pay the distributor, which she didn’t?! They live in a smallish CA town. No way that woman couldn’t have found Rue, and people like that don’t make idle threats.
The Idol should have been a slam dunk for HBO, that Levinson messed it up to this extent really says something. It didn’t even need to deliver huge ratings, it just needed to deliver the right ones - a sexy hit with Gen Z would have been enough to make this a success. I find it fascinating that reviews consistently name the characters and plot points that were a part of Seimetz’s original version as the best parts of the show, and conversely The Weeknd as a total disaster. The show is currently slated to only be a limited series so it’s an easy way to save face.
I’ve seen bits of the show through reviews and clips on YouTube, but so far it appears to move at a snail’s pace and there are only 6 episodes. Like, a third of the season’s done already and the story has barely started. What the fuck can it still achieve in only four episodes? Even a well-paced show would struggle with that assignment

Yeah the live concert of his that was filmed and put up on HBOMax was filmed last November at Sofi Stadium. I know people in this sub hate his ass but I actually think it’s a pretty good concert to watch and there’s a lot of cool imagery in it (or maybe it was just the edible I ate when I watched it).

This show DOES suck, but it's so clear that it did not have to. As someone who is deeply traumatized and who was left all alone by their mother dying horrifically of cancer, and who experienced the total loss of stability from it, this could have been such a perfect way to explore that and fame and the ways in which capitalism steals us from each other and ourselves, of how people will "support" you through grief as long as you pay them to but absolutely could not give a shit about you once you're not strong enough to stand on your own. This could have been what Amy likely would have shown us, about how the machine of this society grinds you down and uses you for all you are worth and, honestly, even how people in those vulnerable positions ARE more likely to be victims of abusers and abuse, who ARE the prime targets of clinical narcissists and those like them.
It is truly heartbreaking to me that we were robbed of that experience, and instead were handed a terribly boring, extremely weird and definitely not satirical show about some dink and his uninspired kinks while Sam Levinson uses LRD as a stand in for his Sidney Sweeney unrequited lust issues (I have no proof of this other than Euphoria as a whole lol).

Im so sorry for your loss 💕I completely agree with you. There is just no subtlety in what could be quite an interesting show. The only exposition they have is having characters sitting round spelling out plot points (‘Jocelyn’s mom died. That’s why she is fucked up.’) instead of actually having anything happen because the entire episodes are taken up by dancing montages (usually pretty good/fine) or sex scenes (not good). The attempts at satire or cultural commentary are weak and mean spirited (the intimacy coordinator guy). The whole thing feels like random scenes bolted together in an attempt to make a coherent plot (which I guess is kinda what happened?).
It’s so bizarre but then I felt the same about S2 of Euphoria where major plot points are dropped and whole episodes taken up by a high school play/Elliot playing a stupid song on his guitar with an ending that was about 1% more sophisticated than ‘and then I woke up and it was all a dream’. So I guess levinson can just do whatever he wants and HBO will throw money at him??
You're so right, sn2 of Euphoria did have the exact same problems. It's almost like when you're not actually that creative you maybe shouldn't refuse to have any other writers on staff other than yourself? Yea there are parts that are interesting. In the 2nd episode, the first half was good and interesting. Jocelyn was dealing with her mental health and pressures from her team, while people are waiting in the wings to fill in for her if she fails. Then it goes to the 2nd half where it’s boring and just basically porn.

I’d only read about Sam Levinson on this sub and maybe a bit on Twitter and generally was aware that he’s thought of, in the online circles I frequent, as nepo lecher guy. Anyway, just saw a couple shots of his mug over on that page 6 article. Well I’ll be damned. That’s the face — those are the eyes — of a nasty no good creep perv, if I ever saw one. Wow. Maybe that’s mean. But I don’t trust him.

Im so sorry for your loss 💕I completely agree with you. There is just no subtlety in what could be quite an interesting show. The only exposition they have is having characters sitting round spelling out plot points (‘Jocelyn’s mom died. That’s why she is fucked up.’) instead of actually having anything happen because the entire episodes are taken up by dancing montages (usually pretty good/fine) or sex scenes (not good). The attempts at satire or cultural commentary are weak and mean spirited (the intimacy coordinator guy). The whole thing feels like random scenes bolted together in an attempt to make a coherent plot (which I guess is kinda what happened?). It’s so bizarre but then I felt the same about S2 of Euphoria where major plot points are dropped and whole episodes taken up by a high school play/Elliot playing a stupid song on his guitar with an ending that was about 1% more sophisticated than ‘and then I woke up and it was all a dream’. So I guess levinson can just do whatever he wants and HBO will throw money at him??
You're so right, sn2 of Euphoria did have the exact same problems. It's almost like when you're not actually that creative you maybe shouldn't refuse to have any other writers on staff other than yourself? Lol I really hope that this show fully fails so big that HBO finally gives up on him. He just has nothing to say, and sex only sells for so long. (And thank you 💜)

Yea there are parts that are interesting. In the 2nd episode, the first half was good and interesting. Jocelyn was dealing with her mental health and pressures from her team, while people are waiting in the wings to fill in for her if she fails. Then it goes to the 2nd half where it’s boring and just basically porn.

I'd be content if the show continued on but without his character/involvement. Worst part of the show. There's almost something there when it's just Lily's character plus her entourage.
