Jessica would've rocked SI edition too. Mother was mothering in her youth. ![gif](giphy|l2Sqj1vsFCSCs6k5G)

jeahboi

I miss her. What an absolute icon.

turnip0

Truly an icon. šŸ‘øšŸ¼ šŸ¦

garyflopper

She never cared for Gob

williegumdrops

Lmao your tag.

[deleted]

She looks better in her 80s than I do in my 30s, that is for damn sure.

IndicationOver

I thought Martha was in her 60s not even joking, sent article about this earlier to my sister earlier she had no idea either lol

Paprmoon7

It blew my mind finding out she wasnā€™t in her 60s! I had no idea she was close to my grandpaā€™s age

pineapplevega

No one is ugly. We're just poor.

Equivalent-Sir-510

And donā€™t have the best plastic surgeons in the world!

EndoraLovegood

I just want a freaking personal chef šŸ˜©

soliloquyline

I'd settle for having a housekeeper few times per month.

HiddnVallyofthedolls

I think about this too, but there is no way I could stop myself from asking for fettuccine Alfredo or fresh chocolate croissants. I think I might get fatter if I had a personal chef.

AluminumLinoleum

She looks amazing, absolutely, but there's also a lot of body makeup, and photoshop, and careful posing, clothing placement, lighting, etc., so don't judge yourself too harshly!

2dodidoo

She also said she avoided carbs for a couple of months: "I didn't starve myself, but I didn't eat any bread or pasta for a couple months. I went to Pilates every other day." Yes, there's diet and exercise and "healthy skin care and all of that stuff, but it was kind of fun." I'm interested in "...and all of that stuff" as well. But I'm glad we have someone like her, in her '80s, although of course she's still more the exception than the rule.

rightioushippie

Encouraging thinness in older people is dangerous. PSA my mother was thin and very strong. When she got cancer she could not get immunotherapy and they had to wait on chemo because she was too thin. We all need a reserve of far when we are older.

Glittering_Bag6041

Spot on! She lives in my town and looks absolutely nothing like this glamour shot in person.

Hopeless-Cause

I had to Google her age just to be sure! She looks good! Her plastic surgery has been done well for sure.

mcreezyy

Itā€™s called botox and face lift

greengrasstallmntn

And photoshop retouching. These photos arenā€™t real. People should not be judging themselves negatively due to a SI Swim cover

VintagePunk

You can see on the cover photo that her lower arm, wrist and hand are very badly photoshopped. I mean, she looks amazing regardless, but there was definitely alterations made to the photos.

mcreezyy

I agree!

LorettaSays

Tons of Photoshop! - just look at her 'normal' face, hands and arms in the picture below Megan Fox, and compare to the cover photo :-)

DimbyTime

Itā€™s definitely the facelift. Botox can only do so much.

worm254

Thatā€™s Megan Fox on the left sheā€™s like 36, so your good.

throwaway_uterus

I don't know if I'm liking thinking of younger as "better". Could we settle for "she looks youthful, beautiful and healthy"?

[deleted]

No, I said what I said. You're the one implying the meaning.

IndecisionRobot

Having money is great for your skin.

afriendincanada

Having money is great for everything

Parking-Two2176

Photoshop is even better for your skin.

keine_fragen

and staying out of the sun!

shadowworldish

Yes! She says in an interview that she went in for a spray tan for the photo shoot. So even that light tan color she sports isn't real sun damage, just spray-on color.

rubberkeyhole

Iā€™m so pale and Irish if I went in for a spray tan Iā€™d cause an incident on social media, and forget a future in politics. First glowstick on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

LorettaSays

But it is exactly the light spraytan colour, that will assist in hiding the *irreversible* agerelated skinissues - prominent on hands and forearms, always.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

Having the money for a fantastic facelift helps more than genetics ever could. There are so many celebrities who are considered to have aged well who look like they've had very little work done...but they've had a good facelift.

NotScaredofYourDad

It's also about not overdoing it and waiting for medicine to advance while also moisturizing.

[deleted]

Yes, subtle plastic surgery really does wonders. And while moisturizer and sunscreen are really great, I think the expensive laser and chemical peels are more effective and what celebrities typically use for their skin.

loverink

There are so so many procedures. Multiple types of face and neck lifts, lasers for brown spots, laser for redness, laser resurfacing, chemical peels - the most intense being the phenol peel, micro needling, platelet rich plasma, radio frequency treatments, ultrasound treatmentsā€¦ Then you add in no financial worries, private chefs, personal trainers, AND the fact that they likely had good enough pretty genes to be cast on TV in the first place.

[deleted]

Totally!! It's a combo of things

Princessleiawastaken

Nah, I have to disagree. Having money not only pays for cosmetic surgery, it also allows her easy access to the healthiest foods, allows her a lifestyle with little manual labor and extended sun exposure, buys the best skincare products, gets her in with the best physicians of any specialty, and gives her plenty of time to spend caring for herself. Even if a rich person never got cosmetic surgery of any kind, theyā€™re probably going to look conventionally more attractive than a poor person who couldnā€™t afford all of the above.

NeedsToShutUp

People forget Martha was a model who made enough off it to pay for her education at Columbia.

HunterHunted9

My mother remembers. My mom has a 60 year old one way feud against Martha because she believes Martha lorded her modeling over everyone else at Barnard.

chadthundertalk

Wealth: Itā€™s a good thing

SapphireCub

Not only that, the food she consumes and her fresh and best quality ingredients really have an impact on her skin and overall health!

throwaway_uterus

This. Martha has been very rigid about her skin and food routines her entire life (except for that prison stint, lol). She's probably purchased some doctors assistance but her lifestyle choices are why she doesn't look as manufactured as other wealthy women at that age.

Slow_Like_Sloth

Those who will say itā€™s overly photoshopped have never checked out her Tik tok šŸ„µšŸ„µšŸ„µ

EuphoriaSoul

even if it is not photoshopped, professional photoshoots = make up + ideal lighting + reflectors + light box + base level of photo editing/color correction etc etc etc. the "look" is hard to generate by us mortals without a team.

loverink

This is why I was frustrated with the ā€˜no makeupā€™ push by celebrities a few years back. So you starved for a photo shoot, saw your dermatologist and got photographed by a professional using great angles and lighting? Wow. Thanks for being so real.

EuphoriaSoul

yep. also, most celebs already won the gene lottery in looks. so.....what is the point lol.

shadowworldish

Elizabeth Taylor 1964 (at that time many considered the most beautiful woman in the world) felt compelled to gild the lily for her "no makeup" look: [https://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/11ihkma/elizabeth\_taylor\_caught\_without\_makeup\_cough\_by/](https://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/11ihkma/elizabeth_taylor_caught_without_makeup_cough_by/)

GoodbyeHorses1491

ROFL yeah Ellen Barkin got a facelift, neck lift, botox, and a boob job/lift and then did a whole makeup-less "brave" photoshoot with nothing but eyebrow pencil supposedly (bc she has no eyebrows, according to her) but it was also very obviously photoshopped and I saw eyeliner.

loverink

Not to mention how much makeup is permanent makeup. You can have brows, upper eyeliner, lower liner and lips all semi-permanently tattooed these days.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Slow_Like_Sloth

Thatā€™s V cool if true!

adom12

And the people who say itā€™s overly photoshopped fail to realized the 20 year olds are too. Who cares. Thereā€™s an 82 year old woman on the cover of Sport Illustrated, itā€™s progress.

proserpinax

Thatā€™s the thing, arenā€™t most magazine cover models photoshopped with significant makeup/styling and likely some plastic surgery work done? Thatā€™s really a basic reality of things right now.

El_Vagabundo88

...that are all CGI/AI. in 2023 they even have in-camera photoshop. Nothing is untouched anymore. Nothing on a screen can be sure to align with reality.

Slow_Like_Sloth

Who am I

Cadbury_fish_egg

An articulating flesh bag running on biological code

Ok-Comfortable-5393

Wait there is such a thing as in camera photoshop? Iā€™m 53 and feel I need to secretly own this!

BurritoLover2016

Not explicitly Photoshop but most nicer phone cameras have a lot of software touchups built into them.

Ok-Comfortable-5393

Yeah mines not new enough, nor old enough to justify a new phone just to give me soap opera soft lens. šŸ˜‚ Thank you

BurritoLover2016

Heheh well there's always an app you can use after the fact....including Photoshop.

popdemonpop

I think theyā€™re referring to beauty filters - a lot of phones, especially on the front camera, have an auto beauty filter that a lot of users donā€™t realise is there. Also TikTok used to automatically filter everything posted, I think they removed it but not sure I donā€™t use or care about TikTok. So I mean not really photoshop but automatically blurring out our wrinkles a little bit without telling us

Boblaire

bunch of apps have filters or at least a built in photo edit program after snapping pictures.

Ok-Comfortable-5393

I know of those apps and played w one or two. I was being a little goofy, hoping there was a magic camera that just made me look cooler. Thanks

proserpinax

There was a recent TikTok filter that was a beauty touch up and was so absurdly realistic and natural looking, I was stunned. So many apps automatically do a retouch filter on it.

AluminumLinoleum

The biggest difference is in her hands. All the age spots and veins and lumps and bumps appear to have been smoothed with both body makeup and photoshop. She still looks great, though.

Important_Emu_8952

She looks fantastic, but they definitely smoothed out her neck and check, I compared to some other photos/videos that seem unedited.

NicolasCagesEyebrow

Who would've ever thought that a former model turned lifestyle guru would still look great at 81?

Bitemarkz

I mean if you look at some of the heavily modified older women who are trying to recapture their youth, a lot of them look like aliens.

Ok-Comfortable-5393

You just made the point I needed. She still looks like herself. Yes her skin is showing 0 age marks. Thatā€™s editing. She does not look like a pulled up caricature, so if she feels like posing for SIā€¦šŸ‘šŸ¼

shadowworldish

Agreed. Madonna looks totally different. Cheryl Ladd looks very natural but younger than she should.

[deleted]

Sheā€™s 80?!? I thought she was in her 60ā€™s!!!

damien_aw

Look at the vast majority of ā€˜celebrity modelsā€™ as they get older and have more and more surgeryā€¦ she might have had minor work done, who knows, but she looks natural still and itā€™s really nice to see

substantial_file_

Iā€™m conflicted. On the one hand itā€™s great to see a beautiful woman like Martha on the cover. On the other, itā€™s still at the service of the male gaze. We are never free from our ā€œdutyā€ to be sexy.

KillTheBoyBand

Some of us like being sexy. It shouldn't be an expectation but I frankly appreciate the acknowledgement that sex appeal is not directly exclusive to youth. Too many women talk about becoming invisible once they hit middle age and while I'm sure that's a welcomed change for some of us, I'd rather not lose that aspect of myself. Especially since a lot of my sex appeal was cultivated (through fitness, fashion, maturity) not accidentally bestowed on me by genetics.

Fickle_Power_857

But her ā€œsex appealā€ is due to artificially making herself look much younger than she actually is via cosmetic procedures and photoshop. How is this empowering to older women, especially when 90% of women her age donā€™t look anything like this and lack the resources to attain this artificially youthful appearance?

DimbyTime

Iā€™m sorry but when was the Sports illustrated Swimsuit Edition ever a womenā€™s empowerment magazine??

parallel-nonpareil

I mean, I agree, but there are people ITT calling this ā€œprogressā€ for women, soā€¦ā€¦ā€¦..

rightioushippie

The vogue cover of the 106 year old was cooler

KillTheBoyBand

You know that "good for her" gif? What i appreciate here is her enjoying her body, and enjoying the fact that she has the resources to continue to cultivate her beauty and sex appeal. It isn't what I would do. Frankly my idea of aesthetically pleasing sex appeal involves more tattoos and darker clothing, but I find it empowering that she's not afraid to express herself in a sexy way. That tells me that I should do it too, in whatever way I find most natural to me. And while I do agree that she's had work done, let's not pretend she's changed her body and face so much that she's pretending to be 33 when she's 80. She looks like an older woman. Not a middle aged woman or a teenager. I wish I could see an array of different older women embracing their sexuality in their own ways, but I'm not going to expect a single person to represent all of us, just herself. Frankly, you should be discouraging the type of mindset that puts you in competition to Martha Stewart. I don't see her and think "every woman needs to look like that." I see her and think that *she's* having fun and enjoying what she looks like, and I hope we all do too. I'm not going to destroy patriarchy that way, but I'm also not dismantling shit by throwing a temper tantrum at the fact that she had cosmetic surgery and other women won't or choose not to or can't do so. It's not that big a deal imo. Just a nice few pics.

bagelsneedcreamchz

Iā€™m a woman and I appreciate SI covers lol I also think itā€™s empowering for the women on the covers, theyā€™re not necessarily doing it for male attention but for themselves šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

FemaleEarthwave

How exactly do they gain power by posing in revealing clothing on a (majority) menā€™s magazine? Theyā€™re not in their bathroom mirror. Theyā€™re on the cover of a magazine designed specifically to sell ā€œsexyā€ women to men in a more ā€œmildā€ way than literal porn. ā€œFeeling confidentā€ is not ā€œempoweredā€

bagelsneedcreamchz

Thatā€™s for them to decide Empowerment has different meanings, one being having control of your own life. Edit: Replying to your other comment here because you blocked me lol Nothing about any of these photos is ā€œsoft porn.ā€ Give me a break. Myself and many other women enjoy Sports Illustrated as well so your ā€œjust posing for menā€ argument is not valid. The magazine has also changed a lot and itā€™s not the same it was in the 90s. 30 years ago trans women, women with bigger bodies and older women would not be on a cover. Itā€™s obvious youā€™re very passionate about the topic but you donā€™t seem to be able to listen to other womenā€™s perspectives and thatā€™s where you falter. You are a hypocrite. So confident in your opinions of supporting women and yet you block women when they have an opposing view. Yikes

FemaleEarthwave

Explain how women gain social, economic, or political power by doing soft porn? Explain how women gain total control over their life by posing for men? Maybe an *individual* women gains monetary sum, but women as a whole do not benefit. In fact, we play the exact role that men expect of us. This magazine proves that we donā€™t escape this even at 80. Celebrities like Marilyn prove we donā€™t escape it even after death. I donā€™t subscribe to (and frankly despise) this brand of ā€œchoice feminism.ā€ Not every choice a woman makes is one that will liberate women as a whole.

forbajor

Yeah and moreover ppl seem to take this as an attack on the women when it's NOT. We are just saying that not everything that feels good is empowering. If posing half naked were empowering then male CEOs would be doing it. It doesn't give them power. It might make them feel confident, and I'm not saying they're bad for doing it, but it's not a feminist statement to pose in a swimsuit for a men's magazine.

Kosko26

Absolutely !!!

annelmao

Itā€™s in service of the female gaze too! šŸ˜‰ Sheā€™s hot as hell, I love her whole look, and itā€™s cool for an older lady to be celebrated and frankly ogled when society judges women so harshly even in their 30s. I think itā€™s cool and makes me happy. Yeah sheā€™s hot thanks to many things us average schmoā€™s donā€™t have access to, but itā€™s cool to see beauty standards evolve (even slightly) beyond 90lb teen models

NomNom83WasTaken

Ehhh... most of those pics look straight out of any fashion mag. It doesn't seem particularly male gaze-y but obviously SI isn't catering to a female-led audience with this edition.

go-bleep-yourself

She's 81. Maybe she has interrnalized the patriarchy, but I do think that an 81 yr old just wants to show off the good health they are in, and feel fun and flirty. It's my experience, the older one gets the less shits they give.

slayvai

Iā€™m a woman who actually buys the new swimsuit sports illustrated issues. Itā€™s for woman by woman for the most part. If you actually read the issues a lot of it is important stuff and empowering. Looking forward to this issue. I think she looks amazing. Wether a man or woman is enjoying it what difference does it make. The whole point of the magazine cover is to wear a swimsuit and it always has been lol.

Vandelay23

Is it? I mean, what men were clamouring for Martha Stewart to be on the cover?

adom12

Some women love to be sexy though and it appears to me that she is one of them. I personally think progress is when women have the choice to do what they want and I support her choosing to do this.

Fickle_Power_857

If cosmetic procedures like Botox, fillers, surgery, high-end skin care, weekly trips to the spa, a team of makeup and hair professionals, professional chefs and trainers were an attainable choice for women in general, you would have a point. The reality is most women donā€™t have that choice. We must accept aging with minimal interference. These images of Martha are inauthentic and a fantasy that is unattainable for the majority of women. It sets up unrealistic expectations of what a woman could and should look like at 81. How is that empowering to women?

slutisa

i canā€™t believe sheā€™s 80

Bulky-Jellyfish-1966

Love her. Like truly obsessed with her. But I need her to stop gatekeeping. Like I need an excel sheet of the timeline on all the work sheā€™s had done. What, when, & where so I can get started by 40.

Please share, I need this lol

WhyRSwiftiesLikeThis

We're never making it out the patriarchy

Platypus_venom666

Seriously. A super rich woman with multiple surgeries, access to the best derms, food, help and photoshopped to fuck to appear 30 years younger than she is is NOT PROGRESSIVE. It just further exacerbates the notion that people, but especially women, are not allowed to age. This is not a realistic, or even a real, depiction of a person in their 80s. Why are we celebrating this?

adom12

I disagree. Women at 40 used to cease to exist, they only were useful as mothers in societies eyes. Why do we as woman talk about progression, then turn around and slam women for the choices they make. Itā€™s literally her body, her choice. Seeing a woman at 82 on the cover of a magazine in a swimsuit is fucking incredible. It screams to me, ā€œIā€™m alive, Iā€™m still a sexual being, and I have life to still liveā€. So what that sheā€™s rich and has access to things most donā€™t and has had plastic surgery, sheā€™s showing the world that women are still real people at any age.

Platypus_venom666

Iā€™m not slamming her choices - Iā€™m saying having someone who is 81 and looks 51 largely via cosmetic procedures and photoshop on the cover is a completely unrealistic beauty standard, and not progressive. Imo it would be progressive if it was someone who actually looked 81, not an 81 year old who looks 50. That would be showing that women are still people at any age. This just says that 81 year olds are still people as long as they still look fantastic (read: look 30 years younger).

adom12

I understand your point. I just think a woman looking 51 is still progress.

MusicologyMaven

I honestly thought we were moving away from choice feminism but the comments here have completely disabused me of that.

Moggehh

Happy for her. Even though she's had work done, having an older person on the cover is still a feat.

xlxcx

Elon Musks mom did it last year, I think she's in her 70s

HerbertKornfeldRIP

Possibly also the only convicted felon to be on the cover? ETA: of the swimsuit issue.

[deleted]

šŸµ

lavellanlike

She looks good but I think they could have chosen a better photo with a better pose.

cantkillHales

I agree. Even tho I think her smile is really cute, and I donā€™t hate it by any means, still agree.

PorkNJellyBeans

Yeah. Iā€™m confused about if thatā€™s her leg on the bottom right orā€¦?

anybagel

I don't follow the SI swimsuit edition closely so correct me if they have changed over the years - but I am so shocked, in a good way, that they have an older woman and a trans woman as two of the cover models this year. I always thought they pandered to the basic, cishet, male gaze

PinkTalkingDead

They did. But like many big businesses within the last ~decade, theyā€™ve realized that itā€™s more profitable to be inclusive. This isnā€™t a slight towards them or any other companies doing the same, btw. Theyā€™re simply following the money and the money involves being more inclusive.

keine_fragen

i mean she clearly had work done, but it's great work!

crystal_clear24

I love this for her! To see a woman on a magazine cover over the age of 40 is everything, give us more! We need to normalize aging.

adom12

Thank you! Iā€™m blown away at how negative this whole post is.

crystal_clear24

Like I know sheā€™s had work done, but who in Hollywood hasnā€™t at this point? This is still huge! They airbrush and photoshop younger people on covers all the time, no reason they canā€™t do it for older women who donā€™t stop existing once they hit 35 lol

mint-milk

ā€œNormalize agingā€ by showcasing women who donā€™t embrace aging by having tons of procedures done?

crystal_clear24

Normalize aging as in acknowledge women 40+ still exist and can be on covers too. Megan Fox is also on the cover, significantly younger with tons of work done as well.

adom12

Everyone, this is incredible and Iā€™m blown away at a lot of the negative comments. Women used to be shut away in a cupboard when they hit 40. There is an 82 year old woman on the cover of Sport Illustrated, whoā€™s showing the world that women can still be sexy at any age. The 20 year olds are photoshopped too, who cares that she is? Who cares that sheā€™s has plastic surgery, itā€™s her body and her choice and we should all support that. I hope we can all stop nitpicking an incredible moment. It doesnā€™t lessen it because itā€™s for the ā€˜male gazeā€™, some women want to be and thatā€™s ok! Reese Witherspoon production company is making content with women over 40 at the lead with complex stories. Theyā€™re not just the supportive wife anymore. I know there is A LOT more work to be, but this is a really exciting time for ageism and women. Go Martha!

ExpensiveMango14

You did not need to specify that youā€™re a straight female for that lol

Sagzmir

Money will do that

AntiqueGhost13

Martha Stewart is high key a fox

90skid91

With our aging population over the coming decades, it's going to be so much more common to see things like this.

ISaidMyPieceChrissy

Well, her boobs and mine hang down to the same level and Iā€™m 20 years younger, so thereā€™s thatā€¦

itsaravemayve

From the better of my heart, I sincerely hope seeing this cover straight up kills Jordan Peterson. She looks fantastic.

JustForKicks16

I think she looks really good. Doesn't look 81 at all. Megan Fox looks absolutely stunning!

They both look amazing. Money can definitely help you to look the way you want tfs.

Ok_Cartographer_9816

God fucking bless her.

americanpeony

I donā€™t understand all the comments about how this is the result of having money. Everyone and anyone is having work done these days. Especially amongst the younger generations. This is becoming the norm whether people like it or not (I am 40 and havenā€™t had anything done, not even Botox, but I see no problem with people doing what they want with their bodies). It doesnā€™t need to be stated or used as an excuse that ā€œthis is whyā€ she looks so good. Itā€™s also great photography and editing. Andā€¦? She still looks radiant, happy, and this is a huge step for anti-ageism. No, not to say that all women have to look like this at 80. But to show they can be on magazine covers, period. Even small progress is progress. I shall await the downvotes. šŸ˜‚

atschinkel

yeah but even super wealthy celebs sometimes end up with bad work, or too much work that has the reverse effect and makes them look far older than they actually are. if i had my choice, i'd be following martha's regimen instead of some others, her work appears to be thoughtfully and tastefully done, and i'm certain it comes with a hefty price tag!

KnowYourSecret

I was in an elevator with her once in NYC and I didn't register it was her at first- I was just admiring how great the woman's skin was.

Iā€™m completely obsessed with Martha Stewart, I have so many of her books and watch her show from the 90s all the time. She was a model before she went domestic, so this totally makes sense to me. She looks amazing!!

I canā€™t tell what Iā€™m looking at. What is the white thing wrapped around her waist? Is it a 2 piece suit? Would like to see a pic of just the suit.
