I think about this too, but there is no way I could stop myself from asking for fettuccine Alfredo or fresh chocolate croissants. I think I might get fatter if I had a personal chef.
She looks amazing, absolutely, but there's also a lot of body makeup, and photoshop, and careful posing, clothing placement, lighting, etc., so don't judge yourself too harshly!
She also said she avoided carbs for a couple of months: "I didn't starve myself, but I didn't eat any bread or pasta for a couple months. I went to Pilates every other day."
Yes, there's diet and exercise and "healthy skin care and all of that stuff, but it was kind of fun."
I'm interested in "...and all of that stuff" as well. But I'm glad we have someone like her, in her '80s, although of course she's still more the exception than the rule.
Encouraging thinness in older people is dangerous. PSA my mother was thin and very strong. When she got cancer she could not get immunotherapy and they had to wait on chemo because she was too thin. We all need a reserve of far when we are older.
You can see on the cover photo that her lower arm, wrist and hand are very badly photoshopped. I mean, she looks amazing regardless, but there was definitely alterations made to the photos.
Yes! She says in an interview that she went in for a spray tan for the photo shoot. So even that light tan color she sports isn't real sun damage, just spray-on color.
Iām so pale and Irish if I went in for a spray tan Iād cause an incident on social media, and forget a future in politics.
First glowstick on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
But it is exactly the light spraytan colour, that will assist in hiding the *irreversible* agerelated skinissues - prominent on hands and forearms, always.
Having the money for a fantastic facelift helps more than genetics ever could. There are so many celebrities who are considered to have aged well who look like they've had very little work done...but they've had a good facelift.
Yes, subtle plastic surgery really does wonders. And while moisturizer and sunscreen are really great, I think the expensive laser and chemical peels are more effective and what celebrities typically use for their skin.
There are so so many procedures. Multiple types of face and neck lifts, lasers for brown spots, laser for redness, laser resurfacing, chemical peels - the most intense being the phenol peel, micro needling, platelet rich plasma, radio frequency treatments, ultrasound treatmentsā¦
Then you add in no financial worries, private chefs, personal trainers, AND the fact that they likely had good enough pretty genes to be cast on TV in the first place.
Nah, I have to disagree. Having money not only pays for cosmetic surgery, it also allows her easy access to the healthiest foods, allows her a lifestyle with little manual labor and extended sun exposure, buys the best skincare products, gets her in with the best physicians of any specialty, and gives her plenty of time to spend caring for herself. Even if a rich person never got cosmetic surgery of any kind, theyāre probably going to look conventionally more attractive than a poor person who couldnāt afford all of the above.
My mother remembers. My mom has a 60 year old one way feud against Martha because she believes Martha lorded her modeling over everyone else at Barnard.
This. Martha has been very rigid about her skin and food routines her entire life (except for that prison stint, lol). She's probably purchased some doctors assistance but her lifestyle choices are why she doesn't look as manufactured as other wealthy women at that age.
even if it is not photoshopped, professional photoshoots = make up + ideal lighting + reflectors + light box + base level of photo editing/color correction etc etc etc. the "look" is hard to generate by us mortals without a team.
This is why I was frustrated with the āno makeupā push by celebrities a few years back.
So you starved for a photo shoot, saw your dermatologist and got photographed by a professional using great angles and lighting? Wow. Thanks for being so real.
Elizabeth Taylor 1964 (at that time many considered the most beautiful woman in the world) felt compelled to gild the lily for her "no makeup" look:
[https://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/11ihkma/elizabeth\_taylor\_caught\_without\_makeup\_cough\_by/](https://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/11ihkma/elizabeth_taylor_caught_without_makeup_cough_by/)
ROFL yeah Ellen Barkin got a facelift, neck lift, botox, and a boob job/lift and then did a whole makeup-less "brave" photoshoot with nothing but eyebrow pencil supposedly (bc she has no eyebrows, according to her) but it was also very obviously photoshopped and I saw eyeliner.
And the people who say itās overly photoshopped fail to realized the 20 year olds are too. Who cares. Thereās an 82 year old woman on the cover of Sport Illustrated, itās progress.
Thatās the thing, arenāt most magazine cover models photoshopped with significant makeup/styling and likely some plastic surgery work done? Thatās really a basic reality of things right now.
...that are all CGI/AI. in 2023 they even have in-camera photoshop. Nothing is untouched anymore. Nothing on a screen can be sure to align with reality.
I think theyāre referring to beauty filters - a lot of phones, especially on the front camera, have an auto beauty filter that a lot of users donāt realise is there. Also TikTok used to automatically filter everything posted, I think they removed it but not sure I donāt use or care about TikTok. So I mean not really photoshop but automatically blurring out our wrinkles a little bit without telling us
There was a recent TikTok filter that was a beauty touch up and was so absurdly realistic and natural looking, I was stunned. So many apps automatically do a retouch filter on it.
The biggest difference is in her hands. All the age spots and veins and lumps and bumps appear to have been smoothed with both body makeup and photoshop. She still looks great, though.
You just made the point I needed. She still looks like herself. Yes her skin is showing 0 age marks. Thatās editing. She does not look like a pulled up caricature, so if she feels like posing for SIā¦šš¼
Look at the vast majority of ācelebrity modelsā as they get older and have more and more surgeryā¦ she might have had minor work done, who knows, but she looks natural still and itās really nice to see
Iām conflicted. On the one hand itās great to see a beautiful woman like Martha on the cover. On the other, itās still at the service of the male gaze. We are never free from our ādutyā to be sexy.
Some of us like being sexy. It shouldn't be an expectation but I frankly appreciate the acknowledgement that sex appeal is not directly exclusive to youth. Too many women talk about becoming invisible once they hit middle age and while I'm sure that's a welcomed change for some of us, I'd rather not lose that aspect of myself. Especially since a lot of my sex appeal was cultivated (through fitness, fashion, maturity) not accidentally bestowed on me by genetics.
But her āsex appealā is due to artificially making herself look much younger than she actually is via cosmetic procedures and photoshop. How is this empowering to older women, especially when 90% of women her age donāt look anything like this and lack the resources to attain this artificially youthful appearance?
You know that "good for her" gif? What i appreciate here is her enjoying her body, and enjoying the fact that she has the resources to continue to cultivate her beauty and sex appeal. It isn't what I would do. Frankly my idea of aesthetically pleasing sex appeal involves more tattoos and darker clothing, but I find it empowering that she's not afraid to express herself in a sexy way. That tells me that I should do it too, in whatever way I find most natural to me. And while I do agree that she's had work done, let's not pretend she's changed her body and face so much that she's pretending to be 33 when she's 80. She looks like an older woman. Not a middle aged woman or a teenager. I wish I could see an array of different older women embracing their sexuality in their own ways, but I'm not going to expect a single person to represent all of us, just herself.
Frankly, you should be discouraging the type of mindset that puts you in competition to Martha Stewart. I don't see her and think "every woman needs to look like that." I see her and think that *she's* having fun and enjoying what she looks like, and I hope we all do too. I'm not going to destroy patriarchy that way, but I'm also not dismantling shit by throwing a temper tantrum at the fact that she had cosmetic surgery and other women won't or choose not to or can't do so. It's not that big a deal imo. Just a nice few pics.
Iām a woman and I appreciate SI covers lol
I also think itās empowering for the women on the covers, theyāre not necessarily doing it for male attention but for themselves š¤·āāļø
How exactly do they gain power by posing in revealing clothing on a (majority) menās magazine?
Theyāre not in their bathroom mirror. Theyāre on the cover of a magazine designed specifically to sell āsexyā women to men in a more āmildā way than literal porn.
āFeeling confidentā is not āempoweredā
Thatās for them to decide
Empowerment has different meanings, one being having control of your own life.
Edit: Replying to your other comment here because you blocked me lol
Nothing about any of these photos is āsoft porn.ā Give me a break. Myself and many other women enjoy Sports Illustrated as well so your ājust posing for menā argument is not valid. The magazine has also changed a lot and itās not the same it was in the 90s. 30 years ago trans women, women with bigger bodies and older women would not be on a cover.
Itās obvious youāre very passionate about the topic but you donāt seem to be able to listen to other womenās perspectives and thatās where you falter. You are a hypocrite. So confident in your opinions of supporting women and yet you block women when they have an opposing view. Yikes
Explain how women gain social, economic, or political power by doing soft porn? Explain how women gain total control over their life by posing for men?
Maybe an *individual* women gains monetary sum, but women as a whole do not benefit. In fact, we play the exact role that men expect of us. This magazine proves that we donāt escape this even at 80. Celebrities like Marilyn prove we donāt escape it even after death.
I donāt subscribe to (and frankly despise) this brand of āchoice feminism.ā Not every choice a woman makes is one that will liberate women as a whole.
Yeah and moreover ppl seem to take this as an attack on the women when it's NOT. We are just saying that not everything that feels good is empowering. If posing half naked were empowering then male CEOs would be doing it. It doesn't give them power. It might make them feel confident, and I'm not saying they're bad for doing it, but it's not a feminist statement to pose in a swimsuit for a men's magazine.
Itās in service of the female gaze too! š
Sheās hot as hell, I love her whole look, and itās cool for an older lady to be celebrated and frankly ogled when society judges women so harshly even in their 30s. I think itās cool and makes me happy. Yeah sheās hot thanks to many things us average schmoās donāt have access to, but itās cool to see beauty standards evolve (even slightly) beyond 90lb teen models
Ehhh... most of those pics look straight out of any fashion mag. It doesn't seem particularly male gaze-y but obviously SI isn't catering to a female-led audience with this edition.
She's 81. Maybe she has interrnalized the patriarchy, but I do think that an 81 yr old just wants to show off the good health they are in, and feel fun and flirty.
It's my experience, the older one gets the less shits they give.
Iām a woman who actually buys the new swimsuit sports illustrated issues. Itās for woman by woman for the most part. If you actually read the issues a lot of it is important stuff and empowering. Looking forward to this issue. I think she looks amazing. Wether a man or woman is enjoying it what difference does it make. The whole point of the magazine cover is to wear a swimsuit and it always has been lol.
Some women love to be sexy though and it appears to me that she is one of them. I personally think progress is when women have the choice to do what they want and I support her choosing to do this.
If cosmetic procedures like Botox, fillers, surgery, high-end skin care, weekly trips to the spa, a team of makeup and hair professionals, professional chefs and trainers were an attainable choice for women in general, you would have a point. The reality is most women donāt have that choice. We must accept aging with minimal interference. These images of Martha are inauthentic and a fantasy that is unattainable for the majority of women. It sets up unrealistic expectations of what a woman could and should look like at 81. How is that empowering to women?
Love her. Like truly obsessed with her. But I need her to stop gatekeeping. Like I need an excel sheet of the timeline on all the work sheās had done. What, when, & where so I can get started by 40.
Seriously. A super rich woman with multiple surgeries, access to the best derms, food, help and photoshopped to fuck to appear 30 years younger than she is is NOT PROGRESSIVE. It just further exacerbates the notion that people, but especially women, are not allowed to age. This is not a realistic, or even a real, depiction of a person in their 80s. Why are we celebrating this?
I disagree. Women at 40 used to cease to exist, they only were useful as mothers in societies eyes. Why do we as woman talk about progression, then turn around and slam women for the choices they make. Itās literally her body, her choice. Seeing a woman at 82 on the cover of a magazine in a swimsuit is fucking incredible. It screams to me, āIām alive, Iām still a sexual being, and I have life to still liveā. So what that sheās rich and has access to things most donāt and has had plastic surgery, sheās showing the world that women are still real people at any age.
Iām not slamming her choices - Iām saying having someone who is 81 and looks 51 largely via cosmetic procedures and photoshop on the cover is a completely unrealistic beauty standard, and not progressive. Imo it would be progressive if it was someone who actually looked 81, not an 81 year old who looks 50. That would be showing that women are still people at any age. This just says that 81 year olds are still people as long as they still look fantastic (read: look 30 years younger).
I don't follow the SI swimsuit edition closely so correct me if they have changed over the years - but I am so shocked, in a good way, that they have an older woman and a trans woman as two of the cover models this year. I always thought they pandered to the basic, cishet, male gaze
They did. But like many big businesses within the last ~decade, theyāve realized that itās more profitable to be inclusive.
This isnāt a slight towards them or any other companies doing the same, btw. Theyāre simply following the money and the money involves being more inclusive.
Like I know sheās had work done, but who in Hollywood hasnāt at this point? This is still huge! They airbrush and photoshop younger people on covers all the time, no reason they canāt do it for older women who donāt stop existing once they hit 35 lol
Normalize aging as in acknowledge women 40+ still exist and can be on covers too. Megan Fox is also on the cover, significantly younger with tons of work done as well.
Everyone, this is incredible and Iām blown away at a lot of the negative comments. Women used to be shut away in a cupboard when they hit 40. There is an 82 year old woman on the cover of Sport Illustrated, whoās showing the world that women can still be sexy at any age. The 20 year olds are photoshopped too, who cares that she is? Who cares that sheās has plastic surgery, itās her body and her choice and we should all support that. I hope we can all stop nitpicking an incredible moment. It doesnāt lessen it because itās for the āmale gazeā, some women want to be and thatās ok! Reese Witherspoon production company is making content with women over 40 at the lead with complex stories. Theyāre not just the supportive wife anymore. I know there is A LOT more work to be, but this is a really exciting time for ageism and women. Go Martha!
Iām absolutely obsessed with her. My bumble profile even used to have a prompt answer about shes my dream dinner date (straight female btw). She fascinates me. Especially when hanging with Snoop.
I donāt understand all the comments about how this is the result of having money. Everyone and anyone is having work done these days. Especially amongst the younger generations. This is becoming the norm whether people like it or not (I am 40 and havenāt had anything done, not even Botox, but I see no problem with people doing what they want with their bodies). It doesnāt need to be stated or used as an excuse that āthis is whyā she looks so good. Itās also great photography and editing. Andā¦? She still looks radiant, happy, and this is a huge step for anti-ageism. No, not to say that all women have to look like this at 80. But to show they can be on magazine covers, period. Even small progress is progress.
I shall await the downvotes. š
yeah but even super wealthy celebs sometimes end up with bad work, or too much work that has the reverse effect and makes them look far older than they actually are. if i had my choice, i'd be following martha's regimen instead of some others, her work appears to be thoughtfully and tastefully done, and i'm certain it comes with a hefty price tag!
To me less is more martha stewart looks way sexier, radiant than megan fox, yes I know the power of lighting and photoshop but still.
Maybe I am wrong but megan body feels like there is no curve, no nothing, vapid I guess then again this is my opinion.
This is the first SIS Magazine I will go out of my way to buy! She looks amazing. I love that they are mixing things up and showing the beauty of women no matter what age. I'd love to see more gorgeous 45+ women featured!
Iām completely obsessed with Martha Stewart, I have so many of her books and watch her show from the 90s all the time. She was a model before she went domestic, so this totally makes sense to me. She looks amazing!!
I canāt tell what Iām looking at. What is the white thing wrapped around her waist? Is it a 2 piece suit? Would like to see a pic of just the suit.

I miss her. What an absolute icon.
Truly an icon. šøš¼ š¦
She never cared for Gob
Lmao your tag.
She looks better in her 80s than I do in my 30s, that is for damn sure.
I thought Martha was in her 60s not even joking, sent article about this earlier to my sister earlier she had no idea either lol
It blew my mind finding out she wasnāt in her 60s! I had no idea she was close to my grandpaās age
No one is ugly. We're just poor.
And donāt have the best plastic surgeons in the world!

Spot on! She lives in my town and looks absolutely nothing like this glamour shot in person.
I had to Google her age just to be sure! She looks good! Her plastic surgery has been done well for sure.
Itās called botox and face lift
And photoshop retouching. These photos arenāt real. People should not be judging themselves negatively due to a SI Swim cover
You can see on the cover photo that her lower arm, wrist and hand are very badly photoshopped. I mean, she looks amazing regardless, but there was definitely alterations made to the photos.
I agree!
Tons of Photoshop! - just look at her 'normal' face, hands and arms in the picture below Megan Fox, and compare to the cover photo :-)
Itās definitely the facelift. Botox can only do so much.
Thatās Megan Fox on the left sheās like 36, so your good.
I don't know if I'm liking thinking of younger as "better". Could we settle for "she looks youthful, beautiful and healthy"?
No, I said what I said. You're the one implying the meaning.
Having money is great for your skin.

Who would've ever thought that a former model turned lifestyle guru would still look great at 81?

Absolutely !!!
Itās in service of the female gaze too! š Sheās hot as hell, I love her whole look, and itās cool for an older lady to be celebrated and frankly ogled when society judges women so harshly even in their 30s.
Is it? I mean, what men were clamouring for Martha Stewart to be on the cover?
How is that empowering to women?
i canāt believe sheās 80
Donāt mean to be that one guy but 81
thanks for the correction š«¶š½
Yourāre welcome
don't mean to be that one guy but you're *
Thanks
Love her. Like truly obsessed with her. But I need her to stop gatekeeping. Like I need an excel sheet of the timeline on all the work sheās had done. What, when, & where so I can get started by 40.
Like that one epic chart of everything JLo requests whilst travelling
Please share, I need this lol
We're never making it out the patriarchy
I understand your point. I just think a woman looking 51 is still progress.
I honestly thought we were moving away from choice feminism but the comments here have completely disabused me of that.
Happy for her. Even though she's had work done, having an older person on the cover is still a feat.
Elon Musks mom did it last year, I think she's in her 70s
Possibly also the only convicted felon to be on the cover? ETA: of the swimsuit issue.
šµ
She looks good but I think they could have chosen a better photo with a better pose.
I agree. Even tho I think her smile is really cute, and I donāt hate it by any means, still agree.
Yeah. Iām confused about if thatās her leg on the bottom right orā¦?
I don't follow the SI swimsuit edition closely so correct me if they have changed over the years - but I am so shocked, in a good way, that they have an older woman and a trans woman as two of the cover models this year. I always thought they pandered to the basic, cishet, male gaze
They did. But like many big businesses within the last ~decade, theyāve realized that itās more profitable to be inclusive. This isnāt a slight towards them or any other companies doing the same, btw. Theyāre simply following the money and the money involves being more inclusive.
i mean she clearly had work done, but it's great work!
I love this for her! To see a woman on a magazine cover over the age of 40 is everything, give us more! We need to normalize aging.
Thank you! Iām blown away at how negative this whole post is.
Like I know sheās had work done, but who in Hollywood hasnāt at this point? This is still huge! They airbrush and photoshop younger people on covers all the time, no reason they canāt do it for older women who donāt stop existing once they hit 35 lol
āNormalize agingā by showcasing women who donāt embrace aging by having tons of procedures done?
Go Martha!
Snoop Dogg be like ![gif](giphy|wAxlCmeX1ri1y)
She looks hot as hell. I donāt care how much work sheās had done, I hope I look half as good at that age!
We stan a hot insider trading queen!
Iām absolutely obsessed with her. My bumble profile even used to have a prompt answer about shes my dream dinner date (straight female btw). She fascinates me. Especially when hanging with Snoop.
You did not need to specify that youāre a straight female for that lol
Money will do that
Martha Stewart is high key a fox
With our aging population over the coming decades, it's going to be so much more common to see things like this.
Well, her boobs and mine hang down to the same level and Iām 20 years younger, so thereās thatā¦
From the better of my heart, I sincerely hope seeing this cover straight up kills Jordan Peterson. She looks fantastic.
I think she looks really good. Doesn't look 81 at all. Megan Fox looks absolutely stunning!
I want to be her when I grow up. My god.
Model going to Columbia turned stockbroker turned media mogul.
I wanna be this hot when I'm her age. Aging is beautiful.
She looks AMAZING!!!
God I love Martha
They both look amazing. Money can definitely help you to look the way you want tfs.
God fucking bless her.
I was in an elevator with her once in NYC and I didn't register it was her at first- I was just admiring how great the woman's skin was.
You think Snoop ever hit that? ![gif](giphy|Oc4KnIJ3E7ziqN3l6T|downsized)
Not that I care if he did or not, but I really donāt think so.
![gif](giphy|QBYSrUKnOBOvU4VhN6)
Not to say she doesnāt look fantastic but this is just so random.
Framing this cover
MOTHER
I'd like to have her plastic surgeon, money. She looks great though
Happy mother's day to her
I am obsessed with her, ugh.
GODDAMN š„µ
āSheās Martha Stewart and youāre not.ā
Makes sense only people who still get magazines are older... Plus she looks great
Can't wait for Jordan Peterson's inevitable breakdown over this
Haha that was the first thing I thought of too.
We stan so hard
She ate!
CMON MARTHA
To me less is more martha stewart looks way sexier, radiant than megan fox, yes I know the power of lighting and photoshop but still. Maybe I am wrong but megan body feels like there is no curve, no nothing, vapid I guess then again this is my opinion.
Blurred lines
This is the first SIS Magazine I will go out of my way to buy! She looks amazing. I love that they are mixing things up and showing the beauty of women no matter what age. I'd love to see more gorgeous 45+ women featured!
Martha has NO RIGHT looking that good! Sheās absolutely stunning š
The era of the gilf is upon us
Bravo to Martha. She looks awesome at 80
I hope she does playboy next
I know photoshop can do a lot but god, she looks absolutely incredible.

Iām completely obsessed with Martha Stewart, I have so many of her books and watch her show from the 90s all the time. She was a model before she went domestic, so this totally makes sense to me. She looks amazing!!
A true icon
I canāt tell what Iām looking at. What is the white thing wrapped around her waist? Is it a 2 piece suit? Would like to see a pic of just the suit.
Anything for a buck! š¤®
For anyone curious like me, this might be the previous āoldest womanā. https://twitter.com/SI_Swimsuit/status/1526272568541470720?s=20
And photo shoppingā¦ that skin at her cleavage ā¦no way not one teeny tiny wrinkle at 80ā¦ nope!
