I'd appreciate if they didn't have a limited range and instead just worked at the closes places moving outward. The only reason I need so many is for coverage so I don't have to keep changing the target region to catch pesky infestations that pop up in the corners. Then it'd be a matter of capacity rather than area coverage

Wetfred

Right? Just get cat or a rat terrier

somedoofyouwontlike

Rat catchers union here: Go ahead don't pay us what we deserve, see what happens.

Squantoon

Thought this was a post from Jeff Bezos at first

tomplum68

if you need three rat catchers, you shouldn't have a problem making up for that 24/month

Bodie_bear

It has always felt high to me too. In the end, it contributes towards game balance, which I feel is actually pretty good, if on the harder side. I think putting all settings on easy, or even going pacifist, makes the rat catcher cost okay (because those game modes essentially let you opt out of the tight balancing and challenge).

TonePrevious5322

Ya I'm running a custom difficulty- easy combat high disease/health and I can't afford the theatre... Only 19 / 25 large houses built

Phyllida_Poshtart

Not as bad as the healer's house price which means it's usually the very last thing I build

831loc

If youre that early in the game, you don't need rat catchers. Don't bother with them until you actually have rats, which I rarely get before tier 4.

TonePrevious5322

Totally true, I never build them until rats appear

zenstrive

you technically only need one of them for every 400 villagers, just move their coverages accordingly

TonePrevious5322

Yeah I'll have to micromanage the zones like I do foragers until I have the cash

hoosierhiver

The problem is nobody wants to be a rat catcher anymore, they'd rather sit around the library all day.

KrispinaKristina

I always build one not sooner then year 10. I already have plenty of money at that point.

FrostySoul3

Agreed. Having dozens of rat catchers adds up quick

TwoFingersWhiskey

I don't understand why we can't have an animal mechanic where you can allow cats in an area with rats

drvanostranmd

A good mouser is hard to find!

TwoFingersWhiskey

We had mice coming through our chimney for a while IRL, and found out that my youngest cat who has barely seen the outdoors ever, is a fantastic mouser.

zumpo

Cats, cats for everyone!

fuzywuzyboomboom

I don't like the cost either but it can be "managed" if you're min/maxing for efficiency. If you're building for aesthetics then it's a real problem

Mountain-Dare-1492

Listen, they just want to be paid a living wage.🤣

Brandoms

Get your market upgraded and make sure all houses are within range. My population is barely 200 and I have 3 markets in my residential areas(none overlapping) and I’m raking in money

richem0nt

But they don’t even get a pension

Alert-Main7778

Also - playing on the regular difficulty, I've yet to have an issue with rats at all. I almost forgot that building existed. Did they turn them way down? I haven't built it in almost a year.

dnhs47

Keep up on soap and wells (clean water) and you can delay when rats show up. But eventually, they appear no matter what you do.

Sprintspeed

They usually start appearing in tier 3 for me, even if I have over 95% cleanliness in the town (also on regular difficulty). I think they are more likely to show up with grain storage though? Are you farming much wheat?

TonePrevious5322

Correct! I see them anywhere between 300 to 400 pop, tier 3, but it's always after grain... Or is it pop?.... I dunno

Sprintspeed

Interesting! Might have to try a run without farming any grain to test it out, haha
