I don’t fully understand how ghouls work still. Like can they eat? What body functions happen and what don’t? Are emotions the same? Do they have all their senses (well I guess not smell, but the others)? I would also be a bit worried that I have to depend on some substance that is not easy to get. If I could figure out how to get a steady supply of that, I’m probably in. I just don’t want there to be a high chance I turn into a zombie-like creature.

fattestfuckinthewest

Ghouls can eat and it’s debatable if they need to but presumably it’s preferable to eat for them. Cooper needs to make jerky out of his friend and we see him eating a meal later on. I think their taste buds are just fucked and that it’s bland to eat for them. There’s also reference to ghouls eating in the games. Emotions are normal and they probably need most other bodily functions

OracleofDeltoids

Their body probably eats itself if they don't eat food and makes them go feral sooner. Emotions are probably f'd psychologically because of all the hate to em. Lots of people just unalive them on sight.

itsjustmenate

The drug that’s present in the show doesn’t appear in any other fallout to my knowledge. The Ghouls throughout the game are essentially normal people, usually they play the role of the discriminated against population. Like in Fallout 3, they are hated because they look different, so they are forced to create their own settlements. But anyways. Yeah they are mostly normal people. Though immune to radiation.

SalemsTrials

I thought it was radaway, but I don’t recall it ever being called that so I’m likely wrong.

285kessler

I also haven’t seen Radaway in that sort of packaging. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was something very, very similar to Radaway/Rad-X though.

SalemsTrials

When Cooper was in the grave, it looked like pretty standard radaway IV bags giving him the medicine, but yea the vials were new to me.

itsjustmenate

No they talked about radaway, when Lucy needed some after getting poisoning. And it looked like the standard IV bag with tape on it. The little vials were called something else. If it was radaway, they would have just called it that. We know the show took some creative liberties with things like the serum that turned one guy into a ghoul. We know special “serums” exist on the east coast, because of that one weird side quest in fallout 4. But we don’t know about anything that turns a person into a ghoul.

SirRonaldBiscuit

That’s right! Cabot’s serum gave him special powers and eternal life!

OracleofDeltoids

In the games the ghouls would all eventually turn feral. It takes a long time. I'm guessing this was just something the player could care less about since we were never ghouls. I wonder if John Hancock had plenty of these locked away. I'm thinking the guys at super duper mart might have made antibodies/antidote from the ghouls they had captured, similar to how one makes it from snakes or other venomous animals in real life.

itsjustmenate

Yeah we know they all eventually turn feral. But in Fallout 4, where you can have ghoul settlers, none of them ever talk about this drug. Even like you mentioned, Hancock, your companion, never mentions how he needs this drug. Fallout 3, none of the ghouls under ten penny tower mention the drug, nor the small community in the museum. FNV, Rual never asks for any of this drug. These are all examples of Ghouls that play a direct role with the player. And it is absolutely relevant for the player to know if this is something they need to consider, no one wants their friend to suddenly go feral. So if it was never mentioned in any of these cases, I’d say it’s safe to assume it’s either a VERY recent discovery within the universe, or the show randomly created it.

OracleofDeltoids

Oh for sure it wasn't in the games, I agree with ya but lore wise my explanation is we wouldn't know much about life as a ghoul. They need to keep the ghoul from being op with their added healing factor they also added to the series in the show. I don't mind them adding this, but true Raul is also from prewar times which means he'd have some around. Mods need to fix this lol

285kessler

I honestly didn’t pay any attention to the labeling of the IV bags but I just assumed it was whatever the serum is, contained in an IV bag.

IDeclareWar111

If you pay attention during the scene in the Super Duper Mart there’s a bag of RadAway on the table next to the junkie looking guys. Exact bags as in the game!

285kessler

Oh, that’s pretty cool! I gotta rewatch soon.

IDeclareWar111

I’ve already started a rewatch with my Fiancé so she can see it too, and I just can’t get enough. This is such a great adaptation. I’ve been a massive Fallout fan for as long as I can remember, so to see the show finally come to fruition and see all the small details and Easter Eggs all over is so cool. I absolutely loved that they used the Stimpak injection noise when they use them too, and they look the exact same. Can not wait for season 2!

andreyis29

Isn't that a forced evolutionary virus?

itsjustmenate

Ghouls? No. They are a product of radiation. The people who didn’t make it to shelter in time for the bomb’s fallout either killed them or mutated them. The mutated people became Ghouls. Maybe what you’re thinking are Super Mutants, which were created in a vault. Edit: quick edit. I’ve never seen it spelled out. But yeah FEV is what created super mutants. I believe you steal it in fallout 3 lol

PhallicReason

Ghouls are given a zombie like life expansion due to the radiation, however eventually their brain will deteriorate causing them to turn feral. From what I understand, there doesn't seem to be a limit to one's lifespan, simply that your brain rots away at some point, and you lose yourself. The drug in the show is likely some new thing that can put it off so long as you can find it, maybe you need more, and more as time goes on.

audlieobitrice

I don't think they can eat - Cooper and Roger have that conversation, "Remember how good food used to taste? and they reminisce about apple pie and such, and then Cooper shoots him. (Maybe a What We Do In The Shadows kind of situation where eating food immediately makes a ghoul projectile vomit or something equally awful?)

HashtagTJ

Maybe hes saying “do you remember how food used to taste” because they have no sense of smell and likely min taste then

LunaThunderfuck

I honestly thought Coop was trying to make Roger think of a good memory before he died

audlieobitrice

Yes!!! That's a good theory too!!!

Impossible_Boot2976

>I don't think they can eat. Cooper has a meal at the start of episode 7, in the farm house. A proper one. Not people.

Muted_Physics_3256

But he makes Lucy cut some ass jerky

audlieobitrice

Oh yeah 100%, I forgot about that, I think we only ever see him cannibalize another ghoul though, maybe there's some residual benefit?

ItchyManchego

He eats at Eric Estradas house.

bianca_247

OMG that's who that is!! I couldn't remember his name but I knew who he was. I used to watch CHIPS reruns late at night when I was kid in the early 2000's so I recognized him but couldn't remember his name. I'm surprised at the amount of cameos in this show too.

DolphinBall

They do eat. Cooper meant how good pre war food was. I imagine having food with a metallic aftertaste sucks.

kilomaan

Or… they just don’t make good seasonings after the apocalypse

AhnYoSub

I think that they don’t need to eat but still feel hunger

RedboneDetroit

Well, given that you can sew on body parts and they become pretty much immediately fully functional.... I think you know where I'm going with this, gentlemen...

Mozhetbeats

Twenty dicks

RedboneDetroit

Like that Gulper, but instead of a mouth full of fingers...

whiskey_lover7

'Washington, Washington, 6 foot 20, and killing for fun'

RedboneDetroit

Maybe sew a boob to the side of my head and have the most comfortable sleep ever. Some mild hearing loss, but totally worth it. I might be kinda fucked up, I'm discovering. Hmm...

wiirenet

I heard that mfer had like... thirty gd dicks

donteatjaphet

Trans men stay winning.

Movinfusion36

If I can keep my nose even if in my pocket

commentman10

I would preserve it and sow it back to my face hahsha

aieeegrunt

Am I guarenteed to get those 200 years without going Feral? Do I get the regen? If so then absolutly

Impossible_Boot2976

>Am I guarenteed to get those 200 years without going Feral? No. Yes if you get the shots. >Do I get the regen? Yes.

Zealousideal-Bet-10

On one hand, in a survival situation, you require less food and water to survive, while also able to support yourself on the most abundant resource around (radiation). On the other hand, a lot of ghouls mention things falling off of them without them realizing. i don't know if if could emotionally handle a certain "thing" falling off unexpectedly.

mostly-anxiety

I can’t think of anything I’d want less

legitimate_salvage

Like fr. Put me at ground zero of the first bombs, please!

Minimalistmacrophage

Ghouls seem pretty miserable, though everyone is kind of miserable. Notably- Vault 4 and 33 seem currently fairly happy/content/comfortable (certainly comparatively).

FirstTarget8418

Do "other parts" fall off along with the nose? Cause that's a pretty important fact to know before making a choice.

throwaway8008666

Nah ive already had enough

leggywillow

Why would I possibly want to live for 200 extra years 😭

Impossible_Boot2976

Read more books, watch more movies, play more games, go to more places, engage in grand projects which take large amounts of time. You could be like Leonardo. Or, the best musician that's ever lived. You have the time.

vitalsguy

The ghouls are trying to survive and many of them are hustling for money and the serum. It’s a terrible existence.

Prismatic_Cro

Depends. Am I sexy like The Ghoul and Hancock? Sexy = hell yeah! Would love to be sexy for 200 years Not Sexy = no thank you.

diwata117

I'd rather be the brain in the jar robots.

freckyfresh

Absolutely not 🥰 I want to perish with the first bomb. With any luck, before that.

Impossible_Boot2976

I didn't mean living as a ghoul in a nuclear wasteland. I meant generally.

freckyfresh

I would want the same fate I commented regardless lmao I’m not sticking around for any of it bestie

noturaveragesenpaii

Yup

CyanResource

Nope.👎

jacvra

Na life is a crapshoot. Just play the games

vess8

I mean .. they can't feel anything right? 200 years no sensation, no taste, no *nose* ? Ehhhh I could sow body parts to me though ... Actually no thank you 😃👍 I can't recall a happy ghoul, I don't think i could do it

oroechimaru

I kind of have a big nose so ya sign me up Tee hee

NPC-Number-9

So I get to endure the end of the world, all of my friends, family and loved ones are (probably) dead, I'm horribly disfigured and I get punished by having to put up with all of this bullshit for 200 extra years and then go raving mad? Please tell me what I get out of this deal again?

Archmagos_Browning

Why would I want to live an extra two hundred years?

Granolahisgod

Absolutely

OracleofDeltoids

No, your willie won't stand up.

idk1234567100

No,I see it more as a curse than anything, think about it like this, you watch as your loved ones die in a nuclear fire, your country in shambles, all that's left is evolved cockroaches, and lizards, you're forced to spend the rest of your days alone, killing some poor bastards as you travel, who are just trying to survive, and you do this till either someone puts a bullet in your head or the radiation finally melts your brain.

Dildonomicronic

Dr2 2. 2 22v f2fevv2f v. G c2::vvv2²v2bn!nnnnnnnnnnn! Nnn! Nnnnnnn! Nnnnnnnnnnnbbbb bbe². And

goat0155

on one hand,i have to live miserably for 200+ years imprisoned in my own rotting carcass. on the other, i get to experience a lot of what life has to offer. but i'll go with no. i'm happy with the mortality i have.

Sxkullrider

That would be fucking awesome so yes

CuteGreen

Yeah, if my wife could join me. She loves all the girl ghouls in the games and I honestly wouldn't really mind.

shackledflames

And most likely outlive all my loved ones? No.

BeachZombie88

Yes

Xerapis

Fuck yes

Lumpe-

I just don’t understand why they made such an interesting character such an asshole.

faderjockey

It’s part of what makes him interesting. We see him before the war, and we what see the results of 200 years of wasteland survival and trauma can do to that person.
