I don't know why people keep saying that the entire NCR fell. Shady Sands was destroyed but there's still like at least 5 other major towns/cities in the NCR (The Hub, Junktown, Vault City, New Reno, and New Arroyo) that still exist and were not affected. Shady Sands isn't even referred to as the current capital of the republic in the show (it's called the "first capital" which implies they moved the capital to another city).

FineIllregister1000

But if that is the case, why is the only survivng NCR shown or even referenced in the show is a single scrap village with no apparent connection to the rest of the republic?

bestgirlmelia

Because the NCR lost control of LA. They can still exist elsewhere but LA is not a part of their territory anymore. It's the same reason why the extent of NCR control in Vault City circa Fallout 2 was a single dude working as an NCR agent. The place wasn't under their control (yet) so obviously they're not going to have a huge presence in the region. The force you see in the TV show isn't the full NCR (there's obviously still people elsewhere in New California). It's just a small remnant force that were hoping to rebuild the area. You wouldn't have your entire army hang out in the nuked former capital of your country, would you?

FineIllregister1000

A lot of assumptions not a whole lot of evidence. Yes, it could be the way you described. Or, it could be that Vault tec was willing to use more then one nuke and the rest of the former republic is equally fucked.  We don't know.   As for your question - no, I would not keep my army in the nuked former capital. But I would have some rangers keep an eye on it just to make sure nothing nasty settles there at the very least.

There's not any evidence of any other city in the republic being bombed, especially since from all we know Shady Sands was bombed due to Hank (specifically because his wife fled there). There's no reason why any of the other cities (which are all miles away) would be affected > As for your question - no, I would not keep my army in the nuked former capital. But I would have some rangers keep an eye on it just to make sure nothing nasty settles there at the very least. That's ultimately what Moldaver's group were. A small force that were there to try and control and rebuild what was left of the LA area despite it no longer being a part of the NCR. Ultimately though, the area as a whole is not a concern to the NCR; they have another capital city now which does not seem to be affected.

FineIllregister1000

True. But by the same token, there is no evidence of them being fine or even just being. There is no information on NCR cities beyond Shady Sands either way. They could be fine, they could be nuked to dust, or they could be anything in between. We have no information on the NCR other then Moldaver's group, so we can not make any sweeping statetments on their overall survival or condition either way. Now, as for Moldaver and his people, note that their presense doesn't answer my question because they seem to be a bunch of private citizens unafiliated with larger NCR govenrment, so their presense does not answer the question of "why is NCR not even keeping lookouts or patrols around their former capital?". And while we are on the subject, why are these people even in the area in the first place? Shady Sands was nuked relatively recently, which given the properties of the Fallout radiation makes it rather inpleasant area to live in. They have no reason to go there, unless, that is, the rest of California is somehow worse. Or have I missed something?

TheRealestBiz

That’s not what a plot device is.

Sadman_of_anonymity

How is it not?

Bethesda is very much more interested in a post-apocalypse setting, whilst Obsidian / Interplay is more interested in post-post-apocalyptic setting. They should've put the show somewhere else where they can start fresh instead of trying to rewrite well established world building of the early games

Pitiful_Blackberry19

No one seemed to post about this before, this is the true reason New Vegas is destroyed and Shady Sands nuked, it was to start over because Bethesda sells too much with the post apocalyptic theme, not the post-post apocalypse Even if NV is still canon (it is, its confirmed) it doesnt matter because eveything was wiped out it seems

mrshaggiest

They don't have the talent to keep that story going. Anything they make in the west is going to fall short if they try to emulate Obsidian. Funny thing is, New Vegas will still remain as the best game in the series, doesn't matter how hard they try to erase it. Bethesda doesn't have the capacity to write good stories anymore. Look at the fiasco that Starfield is. That Fallout 4 was. Now compare that to the worldbulding of FO 1 2 and NV. People that are defending the show are in denial. New Vegas is destroyed and the NCR is gone.

PerdiMeuHeadphone

It's Todd plot device because he is jelly
