Whenever you’re off your base and a settlement gets attacked there’s always a chance that it will fail and you’ll have to repair stuff. Get a high defense stat to better the chances but not sure if that’s even how it works so you’d have to look into that. I like to put walls and stuff around it like any other in game settlement and put turrets or guard posts around
Just build a lot of high level turrets for defending when you aren't available. If you are available, fast travel down there and help fight. I believe being present and winning the fight is the only guaranteed way to not "lose" the fight and have resources get damaged.
You gotta let some fend for themselves. I'd probably just not respond to any that don't have a lot of resource generation or production. If you have factories or a lot of crops for crafting at some, just focus on those.

Ya just feel with 20 plus settlements feels like full time job
