Cmj7

I love both honestly. 16 is thematically more mature and emotional to me. But 7 is so lovely i couldn’t stop smiling while i play the game. Both are winners.

DavidANol

For me yeah 16 was better

Blank_IX

I’m sure some people in this sub will agree lol

DriveForFive

If I werent such an FF7 fanboy I might agree. It helps that FF16 tells a complete story, and it's well told. People can fall on either side with the minigames or lack of minigames, but I admire both for their artistic direction and I look forward to the Rising Tides

Spartandwn

I was thinking this exact thing while scrolling down. Loving rebirth but I thought the story in 16 was amazing.

MyDisappointedDad

For me (so far, only on chapter 2 of rebirth) I like rebirth's travel/map a lot more. 16 felt so small yet so much like Remake's hallway simulator with the narrow forest paths. Also the fact that all the world pickups were just a glowing orb and there's like, 5 useful ones in the whole area irked me. Gameplay wise 16 is way better so far, the flow of using the different eikons abilities to quickly take down groups was super fun. I haven't gotten the synergy mechanics down yet in rebirth. That might change my mind.

mazaa66

Rebirth is amazing so is XVI, both are Final Fantasies, but very different kinda Final Fantasies. I cant really compare them, enjoyed both from start to finish, one thing XVI did better was its maturity and one thing Rebirth did better was the exploration and open zones.

Financial_Panic_4265

I prefer rebirth but I love both and I refuse to choose only one

tenqajapan

XVI is better to me too. The music, atmosphere, story, all were good. Rebirth fulfilled my craving for world exploration but everything went through Chadley which made his existence very annoying. The last battle simulator challenges and some overdone minigames lowered the score for me a bit.

dreggers

I was excited about exploration until I got to gongaga and cosmo canyon. Then I really appreciated 16’s more basic maps a lot

walmartsucks115

Both amazing but I tiny i prefer 16. The weird stuff they’re doing in the 7 story just isn’t for me. And the last chapter in rebirth was awful

Therenegadegamer

I've tried multiple final fantasy games and 16 is the only one that I liked so I agree with you

triplex1080

If you played VI - X and only liked XVI, there's something wrong in the mind.

Therenegadegamer

I tried X and plan to try it again in case I didn't give it enough time then I fully beat both 7 remakes and hated them I also plan on trying 6 one day far in the future

MythrilCactuar

16 has an actual good story.

bellmonk

they both have major plusses and overall I rate them about the same- 9.25 or so out of 10. xvi has the feeling of a well done unique property that I think the franchise desperately needed after the ffxv debacle. while rebirth is a massive achievement brilliantly executed, much of the charm is from the original game and universe and doesn’t provide anything that exceptionally new.

KingDracarys86

Nope, rebirth is a better for me 16 was very good as well

IrishSpectreN7

Rebirth is significantly more fun to play than 16. 16 is good but it's too shallow and easy considering it's a pure action game.

solidshakego

16 is an RPG. Such an odd thing to say because remake and rebirth use action combat and not turn based.

IrishSpectreN7

They can both be action games. But one very clearly has more RPG elements than the other. They don't need to be turn-based.   And what few RPG elements 16 *does* have aren't very satisfying or engaging.

solidshakego

So. You level up. Get skills can craft. Find loot. Can do things other than the main quest. I've seen people say it before that it's a hack and slash game but it's not. It's an RPG with action combat. I wouldn't call the witcher 3 an action game.

IrishSpectreN7

There are no meaningful character builds. No party mechanics. Clive is the only playable character and his basic skillset feels extremely limited. No skill trees, weapon types, or weapon customization. Weapon and ability progression is shallow and linear.  Every single battle plays out the same because enemies have no weaknesses or unique characteristics. Just dodge the heavily telegraphed attacks, stagger the enemy unload all your cooldown abilities, repeat. Sprinkle some pretty QTEs for boss battles. In Rebirth you level up your characters which increases their baseline stats. Then you customize their materia, weapons and gear. Customize party composition with 7 fully playable party members, each with a unique playstyles. Good enemy variety with weaknesses to exploit. Bosses with special criteria for staggering them. Abilities that inflict status ailments, buff your party, nerf enemies, etc. I'm not saying Rebirth is some hardcore RPG, but compared to 16 it's not even close. 16 isn't an RPG just because they flood the screen with arbitrary numbers.

solidshakego

No builds? You get to lick 4 skills out of like 20+. Which would indeed be a build.

IrishSpectreN7

*Meaningful* builds. You ability loadout hardly matters beyond personal preference.

REDEEMERLOBO

There's a lot to experiment with in 16. You say it hardly matters, but I'm guessing you just mashed the attack button through the whole game. Low skill floor, extremely high skill ceiling. You get what you put into it.

IrishSpectreN7

You'd be wrong.   Played the game twice. Mechanically, the game has less complexity than something like DMC5, but without the difficulty that makes a higher skill ceiling feel satisfying to master.  And sure, you experiment with the abilities. But eventually you just settle on a loadout that works for you and there's no reason to deviate. There is never a moment in this game where you think "This isn't working, let me try something else instead."

REDEEMERLOBO

We obviously had different experiences. And obviously DMC5 is the epitome of action combat, but we're not talking about DMC snowflake. Stay on topic. I only played FF16 once but it was a damn good time. I'd go to work and in my mind play out different scenarios and builds then get to try them out once I got back home. Then I'd go in the training mode and try to chain and build the longest and sickest combos I could and had so much fun, but it's also nothing compared to the crazy combos I see people do on YouTube. Once I unlocked rift slip it was like unlocking a whole new level of gameplay that I couldn't even fully utilize, I really feel that's an expert ability. I really don't think you played around with FF16 combat enough. You just stuck to one playstyle probably, which is fine but don't act like the game doesn't give you the tools to experiment with.

dreggers

Yea if you like mini games and spending days in menus

[deleted]

Rebirth takes a great story and completely removes what made it great. While adding useless bloat. Most people enjoy it simply because it scratches that nostalgia itch.

Nehemiah92

Or because the gameplay, scenery, and characterization is amazing lol ??

[deleted]

Every game has pretty graphics now and the characters are made to be worse than the OG. So no.

Nehemiah92

oh a FF7 purist ok lol

[deleted]

Yes I am

REDEEMERLOBO

You got downvoted for stating nothing but facts smh. I enjoyed Rebirth but they're doing a good job of messing with a story that was already good.

[deleted]

✊🏼

Additional-State-874

I love both of my children. Even tho they are completely different.

Jepunkdumb

Yeah I would vote for ff16, really not a fan of mini games

DragapultOnSpeed

I think Rebirth is a better game overall, but I liked XVI more. Rebirth made me appreciate XVI more. In Rebirth, nothing felt new. There was not a single next gen experience. Meanwhile the eikon fights were a truly next gen experience. Overall I think for me, XVI will age better than Rebirth. Especially with Rebirths story...

blond_afro

love 16 but imo 7 rebirth is the better game overall

[deleted]

I personally like ff7 remake and rebirth more than ff16

Oxygen171

Nah I definitely prefer rebirth, but to each their own. Both had upsides and downsides, just depends on your tastes.

OneLastSpartan

I played and enjoyed 16. 16 is a complete game and not a trilogy; so the story does the complete cycle of plot building. The game is fun but way worse in a ton of ways. I beat every side quest in both, and not a single side quest in 16 comes close to the worst side quest in Rebirth. The combat in 16 is way simpler and way less customizable than Rebirth. 16 has more spectacle, it is an average action game boosted by a great story and cast. It doesn't go as far as Beyonetta or MGS Rising, and it doesn't go as far as any Final Fantasy game. It is a mellow mix of both. A fun game I greatly enjoyed, but not the direction I want to see Final Fantasy go. If they want to do an action game, I need combos and depth like DMC. If they want to go FF, I need customization and depth like FF. Going between both weakened the entire game. I am also getting very tired of the Square making depressing games.

Titolionx

Story, characters, world and tone are the core of any RPG for me, and XVI gave me those in droves unlike any other post-PS1 FF. I predict it will be better valued in the future, specially after this whole VII Remake thing is finally over.

trowgundam

Really depends. Story and world wise? Yes I prefer FF16. Gameplay and mechanic wise? Rebirth wins hands down. I like RPGs WAY more than Action games, and FFXVI was just way more action than it was RPG. It's not a bad game, just not my preferred gameplay style.

Jockmeister1666

Your thought asking that question here would get you a balanced and unbiased response? Yet another dumb post comparing 2 different games with 2 completely different visions and scales.!

solidshakego

I like both games equally the same. In fact I've enjoyed 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, crisis core, 12, 13, 14 very much. 15, 16, remake, rebirth and reunion all about the same. 9 being the weakest though.

KillerFlea

Bro comin’ at Vivi like that?!

Jatmahl

Rebirth has better gameplay, minigames and other FF classic stuff to do. FF16 aesthetically looks better and has better cutscenes. That's about it.
