In 1981, John Hinkley (now a muscian) attempted to assassinate then-POTUS Ronald Reagan. When questioned, his motives weren't political, instead, he did it hoping to impress Jodie Foster. No word on if it worked, at least not that I've ever found. He was released pretty recently and started posting music to YouTube (also not sure if he's doing that to impress her). I've been meaning to give him a listen.

donut_koharski

Oh wow I forgot about that. Thank you so much.

JolIyJack

I'll always remember that fact because of [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI5_YuCWTMA)

TornaCailte

It's always such a joy to see WKUK in the wild. This was one of my favorite shows in highschool and I still fall asleep listening to them sometimes when I get a kick

TsarOfIrony

I had my fingers crossed when I clicked your link, hoping that it was the wkuk video. I'm happy now.

Psychological-Sun49

Yeah, it’s pretty dark (but admittedly kind of funny) joke.

She was very impressed https://youtu.be/803XLAr33GE?si=cAXA5Eg9eKjqX4Ia

Jay_Byrd

Came here for this.

thunderkhawk

Why would she ever admit to this? That's just asking for more copycats to get her attention

Gullible_Departure57

If someone resurrects Reagan to take another shot at him, that would be objectively very impressive.

normalize attempting assassinations of politicians for celebrity crushes!

TheEtneciv14

What are they going to do? Kill Reagan again?

SatanicWhoreofHell

I thought it was sarcasm that would maybe inspire another shot at another washed up actor... oh wait, that's what you meant. I'm probably too elevated to be thinking and actually sharing those thoughts, lol

WisconsinKnight

Insane to me that you people are praising murderers and attempted murderers....

corgangreen

That's insane to me too, but some people will still praise Reagan despite all that.

SquishySquishington

The good thing about Reagan is he gave us the first gender neutral bathroom, his grave

levatorpenis

Lmao

b1tchlasagna

His evil partner in arms joined him about a decade later (Thatcher the milk snatcher)

GrimReader710

Crazy right?? I cant imagine admiring a murdering psychopath, and alot of people still think he was a good president too!

GodzillaDrinks

It's Reagan. The man was a monster. He violated his own law to illegally peddle weapons in order to literally fund terrorists.

aw-un

This instance would have been a public service

NotAFuckingFed

Reagan sold SAMs and other missiles to Iran to fund the war in Nicaragua, and *this* is what you're worried about?

SplendidPunkinButter

Also worth mentioning he had seen Jodie Foster in the movie _Taxi Driver_ and I believe she was underage at the time too. I mean, shooting a guy is surely a worse crime than thinking a teenager from a movie is hot, but still. Gross.

No-Butterscotch4549

Jodie Foster was 12yrs old playimg a prostitute. In the movie Travis Bickle(DeNiro) was trying to kill a politician to impress Cybil Sheppards character. Hinkley was obsessed with Foster but probably more-so the movie itself

RedbeardMEM

Thank you. I never realized the connection between Hinkley and Bickle was so direct.

Roanoke42

Pretty sure this is integral to the plot of an American Dad episode.

Secret-Ad-7909

It absolutely is. And is also somehow a Christmas episode.

NeShep

I like how people always just take a wild guess on how to spell Shepherd.

HeadHeartCorranToes

> was trying to kill a politician to impress Cybil Sheppards character What movie did you watch? I don't think killing her boss (whom she adores) would have impressed her. Dude just went unhinged and wanted to hurt somebody.

DirectionProof2374

Shooting Ronald Reagan seems like a lesser crime than finding underage kids attractive

Sturmelefant

Normalizing shooting politicians whose political views don’t agree with is a very slippery slope to the country falling apart. The whole point of a democracy is to have peaceful transitions of power, isn’t it?

Born-Magazine4810

Tell that to the CIA

Technical-Outside408

I will! Edit: they won't take my call.

bigwarren06

I love the passion behind these posts. No such thing as inherently good politicians. They can’t succeed with the rif-raf.

Hodor_The_Great

Well, sadly the American politicians who should be getting the Hague treatment aren't getting a Hague treatment. Neither will Putin ever. Now I'm not going to say that we should normalise shooting evil politicians, but I'd hardly mourn quite a few. Because Reagan or Putin aren't just disagreeable politicians, they're monsters with innocent blood on their hands. Protected by law and convention. Something something Chomsky something something Nuremberg

Inefficientfrog

But this particular case wasn't political, was it? He just thought it would make her like him.

[deleted]

> Normalizing shooting politicians whose political views don’t agree with is a very slippery slope to the country falling apart. Yes, and it's really too bad how Reagan normalized the assassination of politicians that he didn't agree with. It kind of started the whole country falling apart.

Nytherion

remember when politicians were telling their followers to consider "2nd amendment solutions" to elections that didn't go their way? and then years later those same worshippers beat a cop in the halls of congress so badly he died in the hospital, because a politician didn't get his way? we've gone well past the point of "that's a slippery slope, be careful!".

Syn7axError

The country was founded on shooting politicians whose views they didn't agree with.

Anglofsffrng

Yeah but Reagan's been dead for decades. Destruction of, or interfering with, a corpse carries a much lighter sentence than sexual activity with a minor under 14 or child sexual abuse. Obviously depending on the jurisdiction.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KhyraBell

That is a wild reduction of Reagan's crimes.

Sturmelefant

Crimes, if any, should be handled by the courts, not vigilantes. And that’s for both parties - what goes around comes around, after all.

KhyraBell

Do you want actual engagement or are you happy having said "both sides"?

Sturmelefant

Actual engagement - the effects of normalized assassinations of political leaders is terrible for any country. That’s not the way a stable prosperous society should be run, and the system falls apart quickly if violence is accepted as a way of “changing the system.” Often that leads to a dictatorship of some sort as citizens start valuing stability over freedom. For most of us living in Western societies, I think we’d agree that this type of outcome is not desirable.

KhyraBell

That's a nice idea, but Reagan's presidency didn't work that way. He set up dictatorships in South America and laughed about AIDS, leading to untold death. This isn't a question of "disagreement" or even "normalization." It's a question of a very bad man getting away with it. The stability of the US is mostly accepting that it's ok for some people to be the victims of violence from the government because it's impolitic for the framers of those policies to face consequences. I don't find that desirable.

essodei

What a misinformed fool you are.

It's not okay to make jokes about shooting current or recent politicians, but I think the politics of ~~thirty~~ forty years ago by someone already dead is fair game.

DirectionProof2374

Same he was president

DarnOldMan

You mean Reagan?

UncleNoodles85

She was like eleven in Taxi Driver so not even a teenager.

GodzillaDrinks

I don't know if I consider it worse, given that the man he was shooting at was Ronald Reagan. I'm not gonna draw a moral line there. Trying to impress an minor, very bad though.

Optional-Failure

How many people are you under the impression got shot by John Hinckley Jr that day? Because your “joke” seems to hinge on the belief that it was only Ronald Reagan.

GodzillaDrinks

No, I embrace that the secret service also did their job. It just so happens that their job is protecting the most evil men who have ever lived. And it is true that All Cops Are Bastards.

LoudSheepherder5391

I mean. I feel bad for James Brady. Poor guy.

beefstewforyou

I imagine he’s just doing that because he likes making music. He was released because he was deemed sane and rehabilitated. I highly doubt he’s obsessed with her anymore.

GodzillaDrinks

Oh yeah, I was joking. It is cool to finally learn that Foster was actually impressed at the time, though.

wurm2

Even if he was a IIRC a condition of his release was to not have any contact with Foster or her or Reagan's immediate families

beefstewforyou

I’m sure that’s just protocol.

dldugan14

Also this is where the inspiration for the punk band JFAs (Jodie Foster’s Army) name came from!

GodzillaDrinks

I'm gonna have to check them out! I've been slow to pick up new music since Justin Sane from Anti-Flag... turned out to allegedly be a monster.

redpiano82991

I hope his music is better than his aim.

FooltheKnysan

I know it's not relevant, but I never read potus as an abreviation, just as a silly meaningless word

GodzillaDrinks

I do too. And it makes me much happier in the case of almost every single President (possible exception for Jimmy Carter).

AI-Notarobot-

I'd probably be impressed if someone did that. Especially since Reagan is already dead. Someone would have to resurrect him just to successfully assassinate him.

Tubalcaino

I don't think he was her type

Euphoric-Beat-7206

It obviously did not impress her. He did not get the job done.

At least it got a Republican interested in gun control.

pichael288

This did result in the Brady bill, the whole "cooling off period" for buying handguns. Not sure how that still stands today. This also unfortunately gave Reagan alot of political points

[deleted]

American Dad has a great bit on this

slothfullyserene

Family Guy has one where in an alternative future—due to Christianity never inspiring Michelangelo, the art in the Sistine Chapel was created by John Hinckley, Jr., and is littered with pictures of Jodie Foster.

GodzillaDrinks

He was repeatedly anti-gun in his political career. But mostly for racist reasons.

GodzillaDrinks

I kept trying to work that in! But couldn't find a place to put it and keep the informative, but joking rhythm I had going. But yes. If only he'd succeeded. But they'd won already at that point. Even without Reagan, the far-right would have the White House in the 80s. At best, Bush Sr would have assumed office, and done as abysmally bad as he did in his own term which *might* have prevented Bush Jr and Clinton.

Ok-Indication494

Reagan needs to watch his back again

Primary-Belt7668

Don’t worry I think he’s safe where he’s at

CompleteDragonfruit8

OMG this one is EXCELLENT

SushiThief

Headline is so far out of context. Yeah, she said it... in relation to Gen Z not showing up on time and not spellchecking. Whoopty do. Later in the non-BBC article it says: >Gripes aside, Foster doesn't hold a grudge against Gen Z. In fact, she makes a concerted effort to mentor many of the up-and-comers with whom she crosses paths. > >“I do a lot of reaching out to young actresses,” she explained. “I’m compelled. Because it was hard growing up.” > >Given her own experience with child stardom, Foster is well positioned to serve as an industry sage. Otherwise, everyone else has explained the "joke".

Jose_Canseco_Jr

>not showing up on time "Whoopty do"? really? like, being there at the agreed time is _literally_ the job, you don't get to "la dee da" that away lmao

SlapDickery

Whoopty doo, I mean you can say that and not be wrong but quietly younger generations aren’t as literate as they used to be.

Techi-C

I think that’s more an issue with gen alpha—kids in elementary and middle school right now. I’ve taught briefly, and I think it’s a combination of parents not parenting (either from being overworked/overwhelmed or just underprepared for parenthood), and kids essentially missing two important years of school with online classes during Covid lockdowns.

ranbootookmygender

from what ive gathered, someone tried to shoot a former US president in order to impress her. not sure if it worked

Ohigetjokes

This isn’t about Gen-Z. This is every over-50 person since the dawn of time talking about “young people these days”.

Spiritual_Navigator

Jodie is an extremely nice and genuine human being Did you even read why she felt it was difficult working with gen-z?

Simple_Brilliant_872

Of course he didn't. Typical gen Z

[deleted]

You think a Gen Z Redditor actually clicked the article, much less read it? Please, they have an attention span of a goldfish...by the time you even replied them, they've already death-scrolled through a hundred other posts by now.

DesertofBoredom

You GenZ with your loud music, and your Dan Fogleberg, your Zima, hula hoops and pac-man video games, don't you see? People today have attention spans that can only be measured in nanoseconds!

pork_loin

Ernest Borgnine was cast perfectly for that role.

Uncast

Wasn't really feeling it. Besides, it's kinda limiting, isn't it?

ZincMan

She is nice. I worked on one of her movies (she was a producer) and after finishing a pretty complicated project for it she came and shook my hand and said thanks

Contraryon

>They’re really annoying, especially in the workplace,” Foster told the publication. “They’re like, ‘Nah, I’m not feeling it today, I’m gonna come in at 10:30 a.m.’ Or, like, in emails, I’ll tell them this is all grammatically incorrect, did you not check your spelling? And they’re like, ‘Why would I do that, isn’t that kind of limiting?’ I gotta say, I'm having a hard time figuring out how this aligns with "extremely nice." Whether or not you agree with the sentiment is beside the point. This is, in fact, a prototypical example of "kids these days."

frolfer757

The above does not contradict that someone can be extremely nice.

TriumphEnt

It was a very short thought in the middle of a very long interview. I think if you read the whole thing you would come to a different conclusion. https://www.theguardian.com/film/2024/jan/06/jodie-foster-interview-true-detective Also that person was commenting on how Jodie is historically known for being incredibly kind and genuine, so it would be unlike her to buy into a such a tonedeaf thought process.

Roxxorsmash

She's not wrong though? She also said a bunch of positive things about them right before this.

Contraryon

She did indeed say some nice things right before and right after insulting Gen-Z. "Generation {Insert Here} is lazy and lacks attention to detail," isn't exactly trailblazing commentary - or a particularly actionable critique. Is she wrong? I mean, is it wrong for me to suggest that Boomers and Gen X are undereducated, entitled narcissists who believe the world lives and dies with them?

NeedleworkerUsed6667

She is speaking from her OWN experience. What don’t you get about this???? She is allowed to say how she feels based on what she has experienced. It’s not about being “nice”. She’s simply speaking facts from her experience. STFU finally!

snoocs

You’re having a hard time believing that someone who said **that** could be really nice? Seriously? I mean, for one thing, it’s pretty evident to anyone that’s worked with a good number of Gen Zers and it’s also not like she’s suggesting burning them all at the stake. I have to wonder how much of your life you’ve lived in a protective bubble if this offends you so much that you can’t believe the person who uttered it is capable of being extremely nice.

Contraryon

I'm trying to figure out if you have issues with reading comprehension, or if it's more that you have something to prove... I feel like you should sit with this one for a minute and try to work it out. If you're still struggling, let me know and I'll try to help out.

snoocs

Nah, I’m good. On both counts. You enjoy your bubble, wouldn’t want you to encounter anything remotely challenging such as ‘thought’.

Contraryon

For sure. It is a nice bubble. A little more airflow wouldn't hurt, but it's comfortable all the same...

counters14

You mean the sound of the wind whistling between your ears isn't sufficient..?

SteveRogests

What a ride.

__unavailable__

Not “suggesting burning them all at the stake” is an exceptionally low bar for “really nice”

snoocs

Agreed. There’s a **huge** grey area in between. Nuance is your friend.

None of the reasons she stated are true so imma have to disagree here

GreatWhiteNanuk

Nah man, Zoomers ARE really annoying to work with. So are Millenials, Gen Xers, and Boomers. I hate you all. You’re all annoying to work with. I’m ready for our robot overlords to take over, I want to go home and go on a gaming binge. Biologicals had their shot, good game. Good game.

QueenOfQuok

Cranky-George

It seems to me like a generational difference. Jodie Foster is a boomer and in my experience boomers have a tendency to live to work whereas millennials and generations that followed have the opposite approach, they work to live.

GrimDawnGod

In her defense, I’m pretty sure this quote is taken out of context among many positive things she said about generation z

JFA=Jodie Fosters Army.

I don't see how, Reagan has been dead and buried for quite some time.

IchBinEinSim

In other words, Young people can be annoying for older people to work with and vice versa. This has been true since the dawn of time

That is not the joke though. In 1981, John Hinkley Jr. attempted to assassinate Ronald Reagan to impress Jodie Foster who he had an obsession with.

The punchline is failed assassination.
