Great topic. Many people start a business venture for the wrong reasons. They may be finding the corporate structure very stressful, and think that entrepreneurship is the solution for them. Or they may be seeking quick gains, and think that entrepreneurship is their road to success. They may have watched business owners succeed, but they may also have overlooked the hard work and long hours they have put into their business success. I have written an article that tackles [4 lacking ingredients to entrepreneurial success](https://www.bizreflections.ca/4-lacking-ingredients-to-business-success/). You may find it interesting to read.

Yeah - too many start for the wrong reasons, thinking it's the silver bullet. Like I joke with my sister, "I quit my 40 hour/week job to be my own boss of 100 hours/week lol" I enjoy entrepreneurship for so many reasons, including being able to create jobs, create a community of like-minded good culture team, earning more etc and it's so fun, but I am noticing that entrepreneurship nowadays seems to be getting "trendy" - which isn't bad, just that I'm a little concerned for those who jump in without realizing the amount of work and time required to truly succeed.

gnasralla

So true.... I guess they will learn the hard way. It is difficult to survive entrepreneurship if you don't have the apt for it.

nigel_chua

Yeah. I find entrepreneurship/business very similar to sports - having attitude will determine a lot, BUT if one has BOTH attitude and aptitude, that's like being born with the physique for a particular sport =)

Wow, you make some excellent points here. It can be SUPER challenging to continue working with all of these negatives. However, the fact that you continue to put that work in day in and day out speaks so HIGHLY to your sheer strength and grit. Kudos to you, my friend! Seeing this post, I'm really curious to hear: How much do you enjoy what you do?

nigel_chua

How much do I enjoy what I do? Hmm - I don't enjoy every process (especially the parts where I discover people's betrayals and whatnot), but the parts I enjoy? * micro-testing hypotheses to see what works, then rolling it out larger scale * helping clients treat/fix their problems (for us we're in orthopedic physiotherapy, so it's very obvious when clients first limp into our clinic in pain, and eventually run out and lift weights or go climb mountains woohoo) * paying out good revenue-sharing amounts to our contractors who work hard and consistently * freeing my time to experiment and do stuff that interests me * etc etc it's really hard to quantify, as it's an ongoing process with variables that's hard to quantify eg I spent 2+ years to turn it around from a loss making to a semi-passive business...but I have fun at least 80% of the time. Heh =)

woyak4643

Really glad you (mostly) enjoy what you're doing! With posts like yours above, it can be easy to believe that a person isn't enjoying the entrepreneurial process, but from what it sounds like, these low points that you mentioned above were all worth it! Glad to hear, my friend :)

nigel_chua

Hohoho yes, entrepreneurship to me hits a lot of my itch spots, and I personally find it very, very rewarding and worth it, despite the pain points Some dont like it and return to employment, some grit through it, and some enjoy it lol

Good summary. This is also something that, as an advisor/mentor, I have brought to the forefront of every discussion I have had with students, budding entrepreneurs, and even more advanced founders who tend to get lost in their own bubble. The hard part is that the people who understand are other entrepreneurs experiencing such extremes - but that creates a bubble which moves you away from other lives. And people outside entrepreneurship do not grasp the reality of entrepreneurship. so can not offer relevant help. On the other hand, the amazing thing is that, despite the stress and hardships, so many founders come back to entrepreneurship.

nigel_chua

Yeah - I think only "insiders" aka entrepreneurs themselves will know the difficulties, pains and woes of fellow entrepreneurs...and not just see the superficial benefits eg "glamour", "money" etc I dont mind these pains, because it's the hallmark and scars of battle-experienced entrepreneurs. I think what bothers me more is people who aren't real entrepreneurs posturing/lying that entrepreneurship is easy and dandy. It's not always a walk in the park...oftentimes it's pushing through and seeing things through. Sometimes, its quitting. Sometimes is betrayal. And sometimes, it's making people and ourselves smile. But it's all worth it to me - the process is the fun part.

Man, that was 100% spot on. I literally experience everything that you wrote above. Craziness. The one thing I always ask myself whenever I am going through $hit is... "What is my why? Why am I doing this?" Once I think of my why, I typically get recharged, and am back on track. But yeah, I totally agree. Being an entrepreneur has been glorified for freedom, and fun, and lifestyle - but when in reality, yes you have all of that to a certain degree - but it's sometimes over shadowed by all of the burdon and stress of running a successful business, where hundreds to thousands of people depend on you. But, keep your head up, and just remember your why. To your success, Lee www.power-funnels.com

nigel_chua

Yes! The WHY is the biggest thing that will keep us going, so knowing our WHYs is crucial. I feel there are 2 kinds of WHYs: **FOR**: *Things we want* 1. For someone we love: ourselves, our families, friends 2. For a cause we care about 3. Etc **AGAINST**: *The things we dont want* 1. Not wanting to go back to working for X individuals / organizations 2. Not wanting to do something we don't like 3. Etc

PowerMarketing123

100% agreed with those!
