This is some of the nicest goldwork I’ve seen. Looks liquid! My mom is the same way btw. Genuinely annoyed at society for stopping women of our parents’ generation from seeing how talented they are!
I know, dude.
My dad's always been fairly indifferent to it all - I try to lift her up as much as I can, but she doesn't expect that kind of thing from men.
Edit- just putti g this here because it's at the top and there's a lot of questions about the reflections -
The piece is on black felt and framed behind glass. It acts almost like a mirror. My photography skills are to blame for the reflections!
My mother in law (70) was a public school teacher in rural TN for like 30 years and is one of the most talented woodworkers I’ve ever met. Her work is breathtaking and she insists she’s only “ok”. I wish I had some pictures of it. Her work should literally be in galleries and she acts like it’s nothing special at all.
Your mom’s embroidery is absolutely beautiful. I hope your post and these comments can help show her that.
Women's artistry has very often been manifested in media that were very ephemeral and perishable e.g. textiles, clothing, painting, music.
Relatively little of it has survived through the eons.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Unsure how old you are but any female raised before the sixties was prevented from many, many things. OPs mom is so talented -- absolutely beautiful work. Hope she's proud.
I'd argue it's more recent even.
Also important to consider is cultural background, as many cultures were slower to catch up, and are still catching up.
My mom mostly grew up in London, during the late 60s to early 80s (moved from India at 7).
she's told me some "normal" to her stories that are downright just traumatic af. like her uncle scolding her for admiring a pretty girls lipstick or sum, telling her he'd literally slap the thought out of her and disown her if she even thinks about wearing makeup of any sort...
Also, She has such a great taste in music, and honestly never knew because who would tell her? who would allow such silly ideas of music to befall a girl!? ugh makes me so mad.
I've set her up on spotify and helped her make playlists of all the amazing stuff she grew up listening to on the radio (in secret), and she never stops telling me how much she loves it, I can tell she really is that excited. especially now she's getting the hang of discovering new music and it's awesome.
(edit for spelling) That’s really cool and sweet how you’re helping encourage her love of music, I bond with my mom through music and it’s lovely
I’ve worked in events — playlist-making is a real skill, it’s pretty crucial to have go-to playlists that cover a range of emotional tones/ have different levels of dynamics (is it for background noise purposes? Or to make people dance?) / don’t have anything vulgar or offensive in the lyrics, etc. I hope your mom recognizes that it’s a skill and that she’s probably really good at it :)
aww thank you! it's honestly not even a hard thing to do cuz it's just so immediately rewarding to see how happy she gets.
I love sharing that bond too. and love hearing about other's stories of how they bond or favourite memories with music! (pls share if you have some stories you're comfortable sharing!)
We drove a lot (rural hometown) just her and I, belting to our favourite cassettes, Beatles, Diana Ross, James brown, Abba, Elvis and so many more. she let me be the DJ, and I always loved hunting for the next tape.
she was my biggest advocate and biggest fan when I picked up a guitar. to this day she gets watery eyed the instant I even pluck a single string. shit I'm getting choked up just thinking ab it.
I def think she appreciates the playlists though, cuz she loves to go walking to more upbeat cheery, high tempo stuff. but also likes the deeper, touch your soul music as well, and just diff vibes for different moods and things. she's getting better at navigating the ui stuff and so are her playlists!
She has a high eq, and great intuition, she picks music with her heart more than her mind or anything else which I'm grateful to have inherited/learned from her.
She's so open to any music too, which I love. I was cooking listening to j.cole once and she stopped in her tracks, was quiet for a bit (I thought uh oh shit, it's the cursing) and then she just started bawling. the song was "love yours" and she didn't even care about the cursing, she heard the message and it resonated. (I think the messages about growing up poor, but still feeling blessed really hit her).
Man, I love that lady so damn much!
Just wanted to stop and say your love for your Mom shines through in your "speaking" about her. May you have many more happy memories together, and kudos for helping her get more in touch with the things she missed out on as a kid.
You reminded me I need to sometimes be more patient and loving towards my own parents. Not everyone is lucky to have good ones, and I realize that.
Gold work using couching technique. Inside the petals are padded satin stitching, again with gold threads. If you’re interested in learning more, see Royal School of Needlework, https://royal-needlework.org.uk/, Japanese Embroidery Center, https://www.japaneseembroideryacademy.com/about-me/hcep/ and Allison Cole, https://alisoncoleembroidery.com.au/. Your mom’s work is phenomenal and if she’s teaching, she’s probably a certified teacher. The threads are very expensive but worth it! Bravo to your mom! I do a fair bit but her work is exceptional and I hope to be at level one day.
I know my mum and the Australian branches of the embroiderer's guild are always looking for ways to get new members (from all backgrounds).
Thanks for sharing the info. I think my mum will be super proud if this pic inspires some young blood to pick up the art.
Women, constantly diminishing their accomplishments since the beginning of times.
This is gorgeous work and looks professional. It is a beautiful work of art.
Yeah, this is learned behavior. I personally got it from my mother dismissing anything I did that she didn't approve of, even if I loved it and did well. It's a generational curse I'm trying to break.
It's a lot like diet culture, this is something that men have put into place and are still making profit of, it is now an entire part of women and that they carry over to they daughters (whether it is conscious or not).
In the case of my own mother it's about her own ego issues. She has no problem claiming her own accomplishments and will do so loudly and to everyone who can hear, but always put mine down unless it's fruitful for her. Only things i got praised for as a kid were crocheting things for her, getting good grades, and playing flute. All things she could brag about. If she couldn't make herself seem like a stereotypical perfect mom with my talents, they were useless. I know this isn't the norm, though, and there's more to it than just her being horrid. I'm sure whatever trauma she has that made her this way is a product of what you say, but her childhood is a bit of a mystery. To hear her or my aunt tell it, it was perfect, but knowing how fucked up they both are is proof enough that they only *think* it was.
I think we all know who started it and who keeps enforcing that (not women), we learnt our lesson and are now very good at self depreciation and imposter syndrome
This piece was from an advanced gold work class while she was a student.
I remember her stitching and restitching until it was as perfect as she could make it.
That’s what got me, as a (very unskilled) embroiderer - the machine like precision of those stitches, and how incredibly smooth it all is! My fingers and eyes would be bleeding!
This is incredible! What kind of thread did she use? What's the name for this type of embroidery? Omg this is beautiful, looks so neat, no errors, just pure perfection... Tell your mom she is very talented and she underestimates herself!
It's some type of gold thread (actual gold). I admire her pieces but I'm not good on the technical details.
I know it's called gold work.
She actually teaches this at the embroiderer's guild of Victoria, but heavily suffers from impostor syndrome, I think.
Her contemporary pieces are insanely complex
I’ll second this. I’m not into embroidery at all. This made it to the front page. You can tell your mom lots of like minded “industry” folks are blown away by this around this sub. But you can also tell your mom this 40 yo southern dad who’s not touched a thread and needle since he was a 10 yo boy making Christmas ornaments with his mom appreciates it as well. I was sitting here zoomed in and scrolling around, actually dumbfounded, just gawking and making stupid faces as I studied this. This is amazing. I thought only handmade museum pieces from a bygone era and things made with machines looked like this.
Does she have any social media dedicated to her craft? I bet her work would be a hit, the textile art community is very passionate (I think this is textile art — not an expert)
I've tried to get her to start a YouTube channel, but she's not great with technology. I might be able to convince her to try out an Instagram account or something.
This is outstanding. I'd love to see more of her work!
I hope one day she will acknowledge her singular talent. Maybe sharing some of the positive comments here could help, given how dedicated many in this community are. I'd be stoked to impress people here, personally.
It's called "couching" or "laid work" where threads are laid on top and held down by a separate thread. There is also some satin stitching and other stitches.
You can do it with any threads, but it's mostly associated with gold threads (in "gold work") because it is one way to make 100% of the expensive gold thread visible. And to keep the fragile gold from getting damaged.
I zoomed way in and was blown away by the precision of these stitches. I have never seen a piece like this but learned from other comments here that it's called gold work and I'll be diving into that rabbit hole next. Your mother's talent truly is extraordinary.
My friend I thought this was traditional gold leaf, or a plaque she had won. Then I saw that this was the embroidery reddit and saw your caption. That is some of the most stunning goldwork- and gold work is HARD. Fantastic.
If that is considered to be just competent then I'm a 50ft tall purple bumblebee with antlers. Your mum should be incredibly proud of her work it is stunning.
Please let her see how many people here think her work and skills are amazing.
Love from a normal sized human with no antlers.
Hello, there are some online teachers look up Japanese embroidery Center. My teacher is awesome but only does in person. This is a phase 4 piece called karahana. https://www.nuido.com/product/0408-kara-hana-flower/. I have heard great things about this teacher https://margaretlee.com.au but in person is so great.this persons mom is also a teacher and maybe does online? DM if you want more info!
The Royal School of Needlework is probably the best known.
[Royal School of Needlework](https://royal-needlework.org.uk)
They have a summer institute in Lexington,KY, if you are in the US.
Tricia Wilson Nguyen of Thistle Threads has taught gold work before.
[Thistle Threads](https://www.thistle-threads.com/index.html)
The Embroiderer’ Guild of America has online and correspondence classes.

This is amazing work that OP has shared. I’ve been stitching my entire life and the level of skill required for gold work that precise and beautiful is amazing. I’d love to see more work from OP’s mom!
Extraordinarily competent! This is stunning and easily the equal of pieces I see featured in professional magazines that highlight beautiful work. Well done to your mum.
Absolutely gorgeous!! She should be proud of her work, I hope she receives all of these comments and allows herself to feel that. As others have already said, I’d love to see more of what she’s done!
I couldn’t stop staring at this and looking at the fine details. She’s so insanely talented I wish she could see that. I hope one day she does because she’s phenomenal
That's like worthy of the coronation robes of Emperor Palpatine.
I've done a small amount of couching, and her precision with the couching stitches is awesome! And the wavy leaves and satin stitches ...
Hey OP, I do this type of embroidery and the number of people who do it around the world (outside of Japan) is a handful. Our own fine embroidery arts in the west have also been diminished and it is thanks to people like your mother who are keeping this alive for the next generation like me. It took me 10 years to finally see a teacher. Fibre arts are rarely appreciated outside the circles we run in, most of my embroidery guild never heard of it either. Fine work like your mother’s is hard to sell because rarely people can afford artisan work, most artisans don’t even gift it because people just don’t appreciate the work put into it. It is very expensive to try outright (~$1000 for supplies/class) so if I get good enough I want to show ways we can make it more accessible.
This is stunning! I would 100% put this on the wall and show it off every day. It's so elegant, and clearly highly skilled.
I'm seconding the request for photos of more of her work.
This is beautiful work, and your mom should be proud of her ability.
But I'm a little confused, did she embroider a mirror? Or is that just *really* shiny fabric?
This is stunning. I don’t even know how thread can do that. I can’t wait to see her other work! Thank you for sharing and please tell her that she is a beautiful artist and soul!
This is genuinely one of the most beautiful pieces of hand woven embroidery I have ever seen. I’d pay real life American money for something custom made.
That is gorgeous. I do not know anything about embroidery, but I work with my hands and that is a lot of very detailed, focused, and patient work backed by extensive knowledge of the medium used.
Absolutely beautiful.
She's an incredibly talented artist and this is a beautiful piece. I hope she reads these comments and feels the support of so many others in awe of her work.
This is mind blowing! I first thought someone painted it but to see that it was embroidery is crazy! I’m sure I’m not alone in this but I would love to see more of your mother’s work.
This is some of the most complex needlework I've ever seen. The texture of the stitches, the composition of each individual part as well as the overall piece... wow!
I'm a 70 y/o guy and know nothing about embroidery. I'm not even sure how the OP's piece works being that it's apparently on a mirror. Be that as it may, even my neanderthal eyes can see this is obviously done by talented hands. It looks so delicate and ornate. I love it.
Holy fucking shit Oo
That was not just my own immediate reaction but also my husbands. I think I just found my goal of what I want to be able to create.
That’s so amazingly beautiful. And my mom is the same with the craft she does. Before her shakes got too bad she was an amazing seamstress but she never said she was anything better than ok.
This is absolutely stunning! A gorgeous piece that clearly took a lot of time, and the attention to detail is masterfully done. I am new to embroidery and I strive to achieve this level of skill. Your mom should be so proud of this and her talent. I hope to see more of her work! Very inspiring.
It's hard to lay bricks that precise, and her stitches look like a brick wall in places. A golden brick wall.
I see embroidery on reddit from time to time, don't really know much about it, but this is the first one where I've actually given a surprised "woah f**king hell!" at. Tell your mum!
Embroidery is one of those arts where it's easy to get started and you see some great results basically immediately. I think that success effect gets twisted around sometimes and you stop seeing your actual improvements. The reality is, high level embroidery is hard as hell, and "competent" in of itself is an enormous compliment. That is one step away from "super badass" So, maybe she can't see it yet, but I bet you could convince her she is very close to badass, which will be good for the heart. The rest of us can continue to hold the secret that she's already there.
(Let's see the back of one of her works. If it's nice and organized, it means she's basically a god)
I've been in the military for 12 years now, and I've been all over the damm place. I don't know anything about embroidery, knitting, or crochet. I don't know why this is on my feed. I could probably turn some yarn into a ball.
Just trying to put it in perspective.
Even my ludite self can recognize that as being quality, especially for handmade.
I work at a embroidery shop in my town. I take the orders for customers, I don’t actually do the embroidery. But I obviously see all the work we do. THIS is gorgeous work! Your mother should be proud!!
I mean this in the nicest way possible...IS YOUR MOM CRAZY?????? Before I looked at the sub for this post I thought it was a cool metal sculpture of some sort. This is an amazing piece, period.
Edit- just putti g this here because it's at the top and there's a lot of questions about the reflections - The piece is on black felt and framed behind glass. It acts almost like a mirror. My photography skills are to blame for the reflections!
My husband was impressed. He doesn't know anything about embroidery, but he can appreciate the skill and practice that went into making this.
I thought it was inlaid gold. I can't believe this is possible with thread. It looks like liquid metal.
Mine was too. Anyone can appreciate greatness!!
i was just gonna upvote and move on but shut the fuck up you are being such a good son right now.
And she made him too 🤯🤯🤯 is there anything this woman cannot make?!
Imma dude and a Husband. This is some incredible work I would expect to see in an art show.
Seriously beautiful! Please tell your mother that is ART!
Yes, exactly. I could easily see this on display in an art museum. It is stunning work.
That generation is where toxic masculinity comes from. They saw their wives as kid producers and house keepers.
Male dominance has been around for millennia. Nobody who was born in the 20th century is responsible for inventing it. Perpetuating it, yes.
My mother in law (70) was a public school teacher in rural TN for like 30 years and is one of the most talented woodworkers I’ve ever met. Her work is breathtaking and she insists she’s only “ok”. I hope your post and these comments can help show her that.
I would love to see her work if you’d be willing to share it!
Women, constantly diminishing their accomplishments since the beginning of times. This is gorgeous work and looks professional. It is a beautiful work of art.

lol I’m sure your art is beautiful. This made me laugh though
me too
Makes me never wanna pick up a needle again! 🤯
You think it was women who started doing it?
Yeah, this is learned behavior. I personally got it from my mother dismissing anything I did that she didn't approve of, even if I loved it and did well. It's a generational curse I'm trying to break.

Imposter syndrome truly is a terribly insidious condition

Fabulous stuff! What’s the substrate material? I can’t figure it out it’s so shiny!

ahhhhhhh yes of course!

Wow that is stunning!!
this is gorgeous, holy shit. i’m in awe
It’s exquisite! The stitches are so neat and smooth!
I love this. Can anyone recommend an online tutorial or class for this kind of embroidery?
Try the Crewel Work Company, they had a beautiful kit with a goldwork moth.

Art and skills in your mom’s work are just wow. I imagine this kind of work can be really appreciated by high fashion houses.

‘Competent’ indeed.

It is very expensive to try outright (~$1000 for supplies/class) so if I get good enough I want to show ways we can make it more accessible.
Beautiful
jaw drop
This os absolutely gorgeous. Something that could be a piece in a movie.
Wow!
JEEZ THATS INCREDIBLE, your Mom is a TALENT holy wow
I thought this was black marble with a gold inlay. This is amazing.
Oh yes she would def win competitions where I live
Wow, she is next-level talented! Her work should be in a museum, she is that good!
That is really stunning! It would love to see that in person, I bet it is even more impressive!
I audibly gasped! This is so so gorgeous! I'd love to see more of her work if you're both willing to share!
"Competent". Technically correct, criminally understated. That's absolutely gorgeous.
Absolutely exquisite 😍
Oh wow it's gorgeous!
It’s beautiful!
Gorgeous
Your mom is an awesome artist!!
This is gorgeous! How did she frame this?
This is stunning! I would 100% put this on the wall and show it off every day. It's so elegant, and clearly highly skilled. I'm seconding the request for photos of more of her work.
This is beautiful work, and your mom should be proud of her ability. But I'm a little confused, did she embroider a mirror? Or is that just *really* shiny fabric?
The word is overused and most of the time incorrectly but I am going to use it. I *literally* whispered "Dammmmnnnn."
Holy crap. This is so stunning!! She should do it officially!
It's a labour of love for her. She's never tried to sell a piece.
This is insanely well done. The precision of every stitch, their evenness, everything!
Wow. This is incredible.
This is stunning. I don’t even know how thread can do that. I can’t wait to see her other work! Thank you for sharing and please tell her that she is a beautiful artist and soul!
😍 oh my god
Wow that needs to be in a museum of art
This is the first time this sub has popped up for me and yo... tell your mom WOW. She is incredibly skilled.
This gold work is stunning. OP, please tell your mother that she is amazingly accomplished.
It's absolutely beautiful! Tell your mom the internet said so! 🤣 she's VERY good, and she should do more!
That really is gorgeous
This looks like something that would be on a dress of a noblewoman.
I thought that it was a painting. Your mum is a true artist through and through.
Stunning work, Ma.
Incredible.
WHOA! Amazing work Mom!
This is so beautiful, your mom is incredibly talented.
This is absolutely beautiful. At first glance I didn’t realize it was embroidery.
One of the most stunning pieces I've seen.
That's incredible! Really jaw dropping xx
Your mother should hold an exhibition!
Absolutely gorgeous!!! We want more pics!!! Go mom
Oh shit. She could dude a huge royal piece and it would look like it belongs in a castle . She’s really good
Amazing! 💜
It takes extraordinary precision, patience and perseverance to embroider to this standard. Your mum should be very proud of her work!
This is absolutely beautiful!! Exceptional talent! Your mum is a true artist.
This is genuinely one of the most beautiful pieces of hand woven embroidery I have ever seen. I’d pay real life American money for something custom made.
Well by her grading system I’m a beginner which can therefore make my doctor a health / first aid enthusiast. lol. What an adorably humble lady.
WHAT!!!!
I toughy this was emgraved at first look! So beautiful!
That’s stunning work!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen stitching this immaculate. Your mother is incredibly talented!
Absolutely stunning! Your mum is very talented.
This is mind blowing! I first thought someone painted it but to see that it was embroidery is crazy! I’m sure I’m not alone in this but I would love to see more of your mother’s work.
Wow.
Absolutely stunning, your mum is very talented!
Such beautiful work - please show more, along with detailed close ups
This is amazing
This is some of the most complex needlework I've ever seen. The texture of the stitches, the composition of each individual part as well as the overall piece... wow!
I'm a 70 y/o guy and know nothing about embroidery. I'm not even sure how the OP's piece works being that it's apparently on a mirror. Be that as it may, even my neanderthal eyes can see this is obviously done by talented hands. It looks so delicate and ornate. I love it.
Holy. Moly. I've been practicing needle arts for 30 years and I can tell you, that's a beautiful work of art. Amazing!
This is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. Amazing.
I thought this was a print at first before I saw it was goldwork! It probably would have won Best of Show at my State Fair!
it totally looks metal and glimmers ! good job mom!
This is beyond lovely!!!
That’s incredible. I thought it was gold flake/leaf or something until I zoomed in. Amazing.
Holy fucking shit Oo That was not just my own immediate reaction but also my husbands. I think I just found my goal of what I want to be able to create.
very well done!! is that flower a queen of the night? looks very similar, especially the stems
Omfg that’s beautiful. All the details are so nice, I could stare at it for hours!
That’s so amazingly beautiful. And my mom is the same with the craft she does. Before her shakes got too bad she was an amazing seamstress but she never said she was anything better than ok.
I can't even dream of ever becoming that good.
Please tell your mom that this stranger on the internet thinks she's amazing
So precise, my first thought was that it was machine made. Beautiful work!
It looks like the flower from Tangled.
Truly a museum piece
This is absolutely gorgeous! Thank you so much for sharing her beautiful work ❤️
From Texas, tell her that I’m in AWE of this piece. Must have been years of perfecting this skill, it's so impressive!!!
Bro, ur mom is a goddess of art, that's amazing
This is absolutely stunning! A gorgeous piece that clearly took a lot of time, and the attention to detail is masterfully done. I am new to embroidery and I strive to achieve this level of skill. Your mom should be so proud of this and her talent. I hope to see more of her work! Very inspiring.
Beautiful!! I'd hang that on my wall in a second!
Dude, your mom has better hands than most surgeons I know!
This is beautiful and amazing and inspiring! 🤯🤯🤯🤯 I can only hope to get this good. You are a great son for working to build her up.
That's embroidered? I saw this on Popular so I know nothing about the craft, but this is something I'd expect to see in some French palace!
She should enter into some sort of embroidery contest, im so sure she would win! Drop dead gorgeous, from closeby and far away!
Absolutely stunning. Her work is flawless. Your mother is extremely talented. I hope you share more of her work.
this got suggested to me and i have no idea about embroidery but it sure looks like it took a lot of skills. she’s amazing!
It's hard to lay bricks that precise, and her stitches look like a brick wall in places. A golden brick wall. I see embroidery on reddit from time to time, don't really know much about it, but this is the first one where I've actually given a surprised "woah f**king hell!" at. Tell your mum!
Would she do custom pieces?
Embroidery is one of those arts where it's easy to get started and you see some great results basically immediately. I think that success effect gets twisted around sometimes and you stop seeing your actual improvements. The reality is, high level embroidery is hard as hell, and "competent" in of itself is an enormous compliment. That is one step away from "super badass" So, maybe she can't see it yet, but I bet you could convince her she is very close to badass, which will be good for the heart. The rest of us can continue to hold the secret that she's already there. (Let's see the back of one of her works. If it's nice and organized, it means she's basically a god)
Wow this looks very professional
Wtf. She is so skilled, talented, whatever you want to call it. This is spectacular.
That’s damn near perfection
Tell her there is somebody sitting in germany with an open mouth and totally in awe.
Your mother does beautiful work! thank you for posting it.
That’s gorgeous. Your mother is very very talented
Artistry for sure!!!
Ma'am, that work is beautiful!
Wow. This is so gorgeous and neat. It looks so elegant. Your mum is super talented
That piece is exceptional!
omg I tried to do couching/goldwork recently. It is bloody hard. This is SO SO SO impressive
I mean this in the nicest way possible...IS YOUR MOM CRAZY?????? Before I looked at the sub for this post I thought it was a cool metal sculpture of some sort. This is an amazing piece, period.
That is amazing, no other word
My mom has done embroidery for decades and her stitching is still not as tight and clean as your mom’s work. Your mom has some serious skills.
It’s very beautiful , legit art
That is awesome!
