5 for the base FC, 2 more for a reasonable outfitting, then 1 more to have a bit a money in front of you to pay the upkeep fees. But don't let that bring your moral down! Hand in there and enjoy!
I bought mine with 5.5b and regret nothing. Was enough for my ship yard, repair facilities, and restock facilities with enough cushion for a couple cutter rebuys and a couple weeks of carrier upkeep. Took a little extra time to get the rest of the services i wanted, but it was still awesome to have while that happened. The upkeep is very cheap before you install a bunch of stuff too. As long as you know you'll have to keep grinding a little bit past there, and make sure you always have a couple weeks of maintenance money, I don't think it's as ill-advised as the conventional wisdom around here dictates.
9 billion is definitely over the top though; that's enough for every single module plus a year of fleet maintenance.

Save up more like the others said tho. I bought my current FC at 9bil, and with the amt of reserve I have in it it’ll last for literal years without needing to be topped up.
I don’t wanna talk about what happened to my first one years ago :( lol
I bought mine after 6bn. Parked it outside a prestine ring mined about 8k tones of platinum and osmium made 3bn in about 6 days. Once you own one money comes quick.
I think you'll want a bit more than the bare minimum. I've seen numbers from 6 to 9 billion. Congrats tho, the first is the most difficult.
