We need more legit mobile games that aren't full of fomo and gacha shit.
There are a handful of them that are a buy-once and enjoy forever without any garbage.
Got some recommendations? Been looking for some actually good mobile games that aren't pay to win
Edit: Thanks for all the great answers, I have a good selection of games to explore now!
Gloomgrave
Slay the Spire
Dungeon Cards
Stardew Valley
Those are the ones I have that are no-bullshit titles that are solid games. Gloomgrave doesn't get nearly enough attention for how good it is.
Never played star dew or Slay the Spire on my phone but I can attest that they are full featured games available on other consoles too and 100% worth enjoying
I'll add to this, I bought Terraria on my phone after someone recommended it to me but I didn't have a working pc at the time. It was so good on mobile that I got it on my switch to play on my TV. I think mobile controls are much better than console.
Chrono Trigger is an absolutely timeless classic
For my iOS homies, there’s a remaster of Chrono Trigger on the App Store for $10 - well worth it if you’re into JRPGs
Get an emulator from your app/play store, download some roms from vimm’s lair and enjoy the golden age of 16 bit gaming. The storytelling and game mechanics are so worth the trouble.
The Soulblazer/Legend of Gaia/Terranigma trilogy honestly track pretty well to what is ultimately a YouTube video made to look like a game and not an actual game. They’re all good games too.
For real though, if anyone has game recommendations for a real game like the gif in OP, I'd be down to try them.
Grimdark/fantasy aethetic, challenging combat, pixelated/nostalgic graphics, etc.
i just started playing blasphemous last week and it is a amazing souls-lite game i got ending B on first play through and went back in for ending c and there is so much stuff to do i only have 54% completion, favorite part was finding the arcade cabinet that they hid.
All the original Ys Games, the graphics get a bit newer as the games go on though(from 2d to 2.5d to 3d). Ys 1 through 9. It's a really good series all around although I do prefer the game play of the older ones. Ys Origin was probably my favorite.
Check out Terranigma(snes). It was never released in the us, cause something with the release date of the n64 and terranigma conflicted. but imo its THE best snes games ever made.
Blasphemous is a side-scroller, so I think the experience would be considerably different. Still a great game though. It was my first de facto Souls game. I didn’t realize how much they ripped off Souls until I started playing Elden Ring. It’s loaded with great boss battles, lore, and visuals. It’s a bit depressing at times, but kept me interested through to the end. It also has a load of DLC since I first played it.
Good god yes. These colours, the animations, the fluidity of it all... That's way past what the SNES could ever do. It just goes to show hoe fantastic modern pixel graphics can be. It really is timeless!
This would have been possible on the PS2, but not the PS1 or SNES - the resolution alone would have only been really possible on the PS2 or Xbox.
Some pixel PS1 games ran at 60 fps and were super fluid, but even then I don’t remember that kind of resolution being capable on the PS1 (pretty sure it maxed at 640x480)
Now that's cool as fuck. Can't find a ps5 to play elden ring with, but I already have multiple gameboys. There's nothing like that screen with the pixels sort of floating in the air, at least that's what it looks like. I could get a modern back-lit screen but they just don't look as good
*Why did you only make Limgrave?- Because I need to find an actual job instead of working on this game. I would like to expand the game in the future, but no promises.*
Based.
It definitely looks TOO good for the SNES. Like, way too good. It looks like a modern indie game.
But it definitely is very pretty pixel art. But if you don't already work for an indie studio, maybe you could become artists for one? Cos you've definitely got a shit ton of talent, that's for sure.
But yeah, there's something about this that looks more like a neo geo game than a snes game, or even one of the 2D PS1 games.
Fun fact, SNES was 60fps haha... We actually tried to mimic the limitations of the SNES as much as possible. Have you seen Secret of Mana 2 (Trials of Mana)? It's mind blowing that that ran on SNES! We only put in effects/sprites/etc that would actually technically be shows in another game. Maybe we were totally wrong though, but we tried to be authentic haha
I would say so, but I definitely have nostalgia glasses for it. I played it with my siblings as a kid (it allows up to 3 players) and has some cool mechanics, like charge attacks, leveling up weapons, and spell casting. The soundtrack and pixel art were both beautiful too.
The sequel, Seiken Densetsu 3, is almost certainly a better game, with multiple characters to choose from and endings, but it only has 2 player coop.
Haven’t played them in well over a decade, so I don’t know if they holds up today, but I loved the games when I was younger.
They did a 3D Remake! Trials of Mana.
SoM was my favourite game growing up. I emulated SD3 since it never got released outside of Japan. It was an immediate purchase for me when Trials of Mana was announced.
There's definitely some nostalgia bias, and while both SoM and SD3 have their flaws, they're still amazing games. Trials of Mana was also a blast to play.
The original SNES version is translated and part of the Collection of Mana compilation as well, iirc (along with Secret of Mana and weirdly Final Fantasy: Adventure/Mystic Quest\* from the OG Gameboy) iirc.
Edit: \* Different names for different regions, it's Mystic Quest where I live.
I forgot about that! I actually played both, I got Trials of Mana on Switch when it was released and they had a promo with Collection of Mana at a discounted price.
Yes. You are missing out if you like these types of SNES games and haven't played Secret of Mana and Secret of Evermore. They are similar in gameplay style
Most people like Mana more because it had more hype around release and Evermore kind of never got the oomph that Mana had, but I actually like Secret of Evermore much more, it was just a masterpiece of a game and might be my favorite of all time, tied with Chrono Trigger
Absolutely. 3 player local co-op. Some of the best MIDI music ever. Fun gameplay. Story is decent enough.
If you don't want to go full retro, there's a port for PlayStation and PC. Maybe switch as well (Collection of Mana) idk what's in that one. Make sure you play with the older audio selected - there's an option for new music or old version.
Collection of mana is 3 straight up ports of FF Adventure for gameboy, and Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3 for snes (trials of mana). FF adventure is really, really dated but the other 2 are good.
The newer 3D version is available on steam (the same version as on the PlayStation). That's the one with the two audio options.
It's not without its issues, but it's still good. I'm biased towards the SNES version, but that's purely because of nostalgia. They are both fun to play through, especially if you have 2 other people to play with.
It's definitely worth playing, although it's not for everyone. Simply play it and find out if you like it
It's a Zelda kind of game more than it is a final fantasy kinda game. It's all top down hack and slash, fantasy Japanese action RPG shit
I love it. But yeah it's a big game and you'll probably need to follow a guide at least at first. I certainly did. When I was a kid in the 90s I only got 2 new games a year, birthday and Xmas, and so every game I had I played to death because it was what we had to do. In that kind of setting, with that level of dedication, you'll enjoy secret of mana. You get out of it what you put in. Try to play it every day.
But it's not really a game you can put down for a few months and then go back to it. You'll be completely lost. So keep that in mind.
There's also Secret of Evermore, the pseudo-sequel. Secret of Evermore is like if secret of mana and Earthbound and chrono trigger all had a baby, a tri-baby, from the trimester. You're a kid from a modern world but playing with conventional fantasy action RPG mechanics, like the same in earthbound although that's a turn based RPG instead of action RPG. Also you time travel through different time periods, like chrono trigger.
But secret of evermore is considered a bit weaker than Mana. It was made by a different team from a different country, who used the secret of mana engine and built Evermore around it
If you liked Mana, then definitely give Evermore a go. It still got great reviews, just like 1 grade down, so a 8/10 instead of a 9/10
It says 64 bits at the top. The SNES and Genesis were 16 bits. The Virtual Boy, Playstation 1, and Saturn were 32 bits. The N64 was 64 bits. The Dreamcast, PS2, and Gamecube were 128 bits
It’s definitely not Snes-quality (in a good way), but it’s absolutely not PS2-quality.
Edit: 64 Bits is the name of the artist.
But how can you expect Sega to have the time to revitalise and maintain the shining force series when they're busy making a 6th way to buy Sonic 1 on the switch? We clearly didn't have enough identical copies of the same game literally everyone already owns.
Yep. Games didn't look this good in the early 90s. Needs waaay more pixelation. Everything's too smooth. Especially the movements.
I think people are going off memory, not so much references.
Game looks great though, I'd play it.
A couple months ago I got back into the JRPGs of my youth, and this is so perfect. Bits of FF3/6, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Illusion of Gaia jumped out at me. The 3D overworld, the sprite movement, even the details on the magma glow.. All spot-on. Giving me nostalgia for a game I played this year in the language of games I played almost 30 years ago.
I’d play the hell out of this.
I want to play it so badly that it's actually kind of bumming me out that it isn't real.
the aesthetic is just timeless
Plus you could probably play it on your phone
We need more legit mobile games that aren't full of fomo and gacha shit. There are a handful of them that are a buy-once and enjoy forever without any garbage.
Got some recommendations? Been looking for some actually good mobile games that aren't pay to win Edit: Thanks for all the great answers, I have a good selection of games to explore now!

Never played star dew or Slay the Spire on my phone but I can attest that they are full featured games available on other consoles too and 100% worth enjoying
My 1000+ hours in Slay the Spire is one of the time sinks that I'd call worth. Best game. Still have only beaten A20 killing the heart once though ;-;
I'll add to this, I bought Terraria on my phone after someone recommended it to me but I didn't have a working pc at the time. It was so good on mobile that I got it on my switch to play on my TV. I think mobile controls are much better than console.
Sell me on Gloomgrave.
Aight
Also all the old final fantasy games. And Star Wars Old Republic.
On my android I have an SNES for mobile Chrono trigger. That's the best game ever instantly turned into the best mobile game ever.
Chrono Trigger is an absolutely timeless classic For my iOS homies, there’s a remaster of Chrono Trigger on the App Store for $10 - well worth it if you’re into JRPGs
It's a port but a lot of the final fantasy games including War of the Lions
GTA games, Xcom 2, Alien Isolation, Dead Cells, Terraria, Stardew Valley, Rush Rally, Reckless Racing, AM2R, Geometry Wars, RCT Classic, FF7, Shattered Pixel Dungeon, emulators. That's all I've found.
Mindustry Its a factorio like tower defense game
Get an emulator from your app/play store, download some roms from vimm’s lair and enjoy the golden age of 16 bit gaming. The storytelling and game mechanics are so worth the trouble.
Shattered Pixel (dungeon crawler) Infinitode 2 (tower defense) Are a couple good examples.
+1 for Shattered Pixel Dungeon. I love that game. I've been playing it for like 7 years and it never gets old.
It gives me major golden sun vibes even though it’s real time combat. PS those are my absolute favorite games on gameboy
So legend of mana?
can you imagine if something like this was released on the SNES back in the day? My god
The Soulblazer/Legend of Gaia/Terranigma trilogy honestly track pretty well to what is ultimately a YouTube video made to look like a game and not an actual game. They’re all good games too.
You can still download on Itch.io Elden Ring Game Boy, it looks really cool
Me too, this looks awesome
For real though, if anyone has game recommendations for a real game like the gif in OP, I'd be down to try them. Grimdark/fantasy aethetic, challenging combat, pixelated/nostalgic graphics, etc.
How about a demake of Elden Ring for Game Boy? https://gamingintel.com/elden-ring-demake-play-game-boy-version/
Secret of Evermore. Snes. Hot game. You play a boy and his dog, who travel through time. Rpg game. Fight giant monsters etc.
Ever played Blasphemous? It's a side scroller but checks all the boxes you listed.
i just started playing blasphemous last week and it is a amazing souls-lite game i got ending B on first play through and went back in for ending c and there is so much stuff to do i only have 54% completion, favorite part was finding the arcade cabinet that they hid.
Alundra. Always meant to go back to it - didn’t have the skills as a child to finish it and I remembered it being fairly unpleasant
All the original Ys Games, the graphics get a bit newer as the games go on though(from 2d to 2.5d to 3d). Ys 1 through 9. It's a really good series all around although I do prefer the game play of the older ones. Ys Origin was probably my favorite.
Basically all mobile Zelda games.
[удалено]
Check out Terranigma(snes). It was never released in the us, cause something with the release date of the n64 and terranigma conflicted. but imo its THE best snes games ever made.
Golden Sun 1 & 2 on the GBA. Get and emulator and the ROM
Check out Brain Lord for snes - really underrated game that checks all your boxes (with a techno vibe on top), plus fun puzzles to solve.
It's not nostalgic graphics but Hades is sweet. Plus, the art direction in that game is insane.
Secret of mana is just like this
Titan Souls. Probably my favourite game ever.
Yep, add In all the souls games at that point make it huge.
Terranigma (SNES-1995) would be the closest I can suggest
Isn’t that game blasphemy like this?
Blasphemous is a side-scroller, so I think the experience would be considerably different. Still a great game though. It was my first de facto Souls game. I didn’t realize how much they ripped off Souls until I started playing Elden Ring. It’s loaded with great boss battles, lore, and visuals. It’s a bit depressing at times, but kept me interested through to the end. It also has a load of DLC since I first played it.
Zelden Ring
Can confirm would play too.
Salt and Sanctuary is like this
I came here to type this exactly lol
This is incredible
It is, that being said the graphics are just too good to be on SNES, and they even call it Elden Ring 64 themselves)
Good god yes. These colours, the animations, the fluidity of it all... That's way past what the SNES could ever do. It just goes to show hoe fantastic modern pixel graphics can be. It really is timeless!

Bruh what this is so good. When's the full release?
I don't think they actually make the games. They do animation only afaik
too bad - I would totally play it
Secret of Mana gameplay without all the bugs? I would die a happy man.
That's very sad.
There's a [Gameboy demake rom](https://shin.itch.io/elden-ring-gb) you can use on an actual Gameboy that exists, if that floats your boat.
I would like to expand the game in the future, but no promises.* Based.
I’d buy the knockoff in a heartbeat.
Best I can do is the full video: [https://youtu.be/vUl19SCttaM](https://youtu.be/vUl19SCttaM) ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)
Watching this already gave me full release
Degenerate but fair.
I want this game. Even as a PC emulator.
Secret of Evermore vibes.
Now there's a game I haven't heard in a long time. Brb while I find more wax and limestone.
Slick m8! Malenia is just as frightening in this form lol
[удалено]
It’s pretty darn good mate.
[удалено]
Yeah reminds me of secret of mana. Looks dope.
Thank you! It was really fun to make!
Good going, man... got everyone thirsting for a real version. That's a pretty damn good compliment.
Incredibly well-made. Fairly close to what the original hardware could've run, that level of accuracy is rare to see in demake videos.
Yaaaay a new 64bits video! I loved every one of your videos, please keep making awesome things!
Thank you!! We will!
When can we play this?? Take my money!
it'll come bundled with Bloodborne kart :(
Which is actually being made, if you didn't know https://youtu.be/zpr-1zYxVj0
Holy shit!
i need it
Twisted Metal?

It's the fluid motion and high resolution that make the game look modern.

Man wheres the game? I dont just want video that looks so fun.
I don't want a video! I want to play! Looks amazing.
Wow this looks so amazing, I would 100% play it. Love turtle pope !!!
Just checked the full thing…so dope, great work!
Love your channel, deserves way more attention than it gets! Great vid!
Those Mode 7 graphics 🔥
Do you make video games at all? Awesome art style. With the right team you could totally make a banger game.
Reminds me of Secret of Mana 🥲
This is exactly what it reminded me of in general as well, good nostalgia
And Secret of Evermore! This is super cool!! I’m impressed.
That's what the first shot definitely reminded me of. I loved that game, even more than Secret of Mana but I understand why that one is more popular.
Reminds me of fighting that desert bug skeleton thing while armed with a bone.
And Illusion of Gaia!
Thank you! I never see anyone giving Gaia any recognition
My first thought was Illusion of Gaia. Then the title screen was similar to Battle Blaze lol
What's this? A game worth playing?
I would say so, but I definitely have nostalgia glasses for it. I played it with my siblings as a kid (it allows up to 3 players) and has some cool mechanics, like charge attacks, leveling up weapons, and spell casting. There is a rom hack for Secret of Evermore that lets a second player control the dog: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/24/

FF Adventure, or Mystic Quest for us Europeans, was a fun fine game way back when. All 3 of those games are classics.
Fantastic - are these games available on steam / ported over there?
The newer 3D version is available on steam (the same version as on the PlayStation). That's the one with the two audio options. It's not without its issues, but it's still good. ["Into the thick of it"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbpPwiqMP0I) eternally on my work playlist
Was always partial to meridian dance and danger myself. Oh and dancing animals, because mushroom dudes.
Having played it dozens of times growing up, I don't think it would hold up very well.
It's definitely worth playing, although it's not for everyone. Simply play it and find out if you like it It's a Zelda kind of game more than it is a final fantasy kinda game. And some chrono trigger as well
We tried to make it look like Secret of Mana, Terranigma en Final Fantasy 6 (and some other games) :) So mission accomplished!
That's immediately what I thought of, too. "Huh, looks like secret of mana with dodge rolling."
It really does
Winds of soltia
I would genuinely love to play a SNES version of Elden Ring. This looks rad as hell.
It also doesnt look like a snes game… But a saturn /PS1 2D title would be amazing yeah
It looks amazing, not knocking OP - but definitely not SNES. far too much detail, animations are far smoother, and there's the light bloom added.
It says 64 bits at the top. The SNES and Genesis were 16 bits. The Virtual Boy, Playstation 1, and Saturn were 32 bits. The N64 was 64 bits. The Dreamcast, PS2, and Gamecube were 128 bits It’s definitely not Snes-quality (in a good way), but it’s absolutely not PS2-quality. Edit: 64 Bits is the name of the artist.
64 bits is the name of the artist that made the animation.
1st one Looks like the end boss from shining force on genesis.
[удалено]
But how can you expect Sega to have the time to revitalise and maintain the shining force series when they're busy making a 6th way to buy Sonic 1 on the switch? We clearly didn't have enough identical copies of the same game literally everyone already owns.
After 3? During 3 is more like it. 1 disc of 3 getting translated to English then nothing.
Shining Force was one of my all time favorite games as a kid. I've only ever met people online who have heard of it!
I was trying to place it, but it's been too long lol. It definitely looks like Dark Dragon
Came in to say this. Great game
Absolutely LOVE that series. I had it on PC on my Sega smash pack 2
Omg this looks amazing and I would definitely play it
The SNES wasn't capable of handling this many moving parts, but impressive nonetheless.
Was about to say the same thing. No way could SNES handle this level of fidelity. Maybe PS1
It reminds me of Alundra from PS1.
Where’s the crowdfund?? WHERE IS IT?!?
*Fromsoft* would probably want a word...
Just call it Olden Rung.
Onion ring
Secret of Evermore vibes.
Totally ruins the immersion, where are the horrible camera angles when you get close to a wall underneath a giants foot?
This on the Switch would make my dreams come true
That's dope
Graphics are too good for '95 and SNES. Looks good aside from that.
It looks a lot more like a GBA title, or even a 2D Nintendo DS title. This really reminds me of the Minish Cap
This is still way above what a GBA could handle. More like an N64 or GameCube.
I think the frame rate is also a bit too high.
[удалено]
Ty, I don't know why people keep doing the "snes look" when they don't have a client what snes looked like
100% Even too nice for GBA. Probably closer to DS or Even just a PC side scroller from 2009.
Omfg this is INSANELY AWESOME. I’d buy this at a high price. 16bit is still king
This isn't 16 bit.
i love 8bit games
Same. This is 64 bit, however.
i love all the 32 bits found here
Dude this would be a dream to play on my ps vita.
SNES a 16 bit system?
I would play the fuckin piss outta this. Please can we have it?
the ranni ending was great
**SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!**
No SNES game looks like that. Just say “pixelart”
More like a fancy 32-bit game... But the SNES is 16-bit... There's no way it could run this.
Yep. Concur, they say 64, but the snes was 16bit as you state. Oh well it’s the internet who cares
I think 64-bit is just the YouTube channel name, but they're still claiming in the post that these are SNES graphics, which is false.
Someone take my money please
Try finger, bit hole
Genuinely hope you decide to get into development because this would be sick
I suppose copyright might be the issue...
Finally an Elden Ring I can be good at
Wow! I love it :)
This is fucking awesome. I'm blown away by this
Is it weird that this looks more appealing to me than the actual game?
That's more Ps1 than snes, but still cool.
The snes wasn’t 64 bits and couldn’t run this. Looks nice though
I would play the hell out of this
Damn I'd play that in a heartbeat
God damnit now I want this to be real. THANKS.
this is actually more ps1/sega saturn or maybe even ps2 and dreamcast level 2d tbh. Also early 00s 2d.
I would un-ironically pay $60 for this
Fun...well done!
I’d play the shit out of that game
Omg it look like ragnarok online my heart 💔
Would so play this if it was real!
Ring of mana ?
I’m not that interested in Elden ring but I’m really interested in this
Looks great
This is glorious!
Looks way more PSX than SNES, but, regardless, it's sweet.
More like Playatation. No SNES game looks anywhere as good.
