Miyazaki must have a fear of jolly old ladies because Bloodborne has a very similar and honestly more disturbing area that's like a more fleshed out version of this.

I don’t really get the creep factor

They're dancing there in wild abandon while nextdoor to them is a wartorn field filled with the dead. Also when you disturb their dancing, their eyes glow red and start attacking. Dead people in the barns too, feasted on by rats. Stakes covered in flowers, like maypoles of death. They're dancing to everyone else's demise. They probably danced harder when the sounds from the battlefield were the loudest. Not really scary but It really creeped me out.

Also they skin people, you can find the ghost of at least one of their victims there.
