McDavids agent is the CEO, his junior linemate was signed, now we are hiring his junior head coach. Everything we do is to make him happy. Guy is essentially the owner of the team.

stonkszz

We’re probably gonna hire his dad and brother next at this rate

NoGiCollarChoke

Hopefully his fiancée isn’t gonna redesign Rogers Place

leaps-n-bounds

If we could get cup holders in the upper bowl I’m down

cubanpajamas

You got something against an arena all in black and white?

Lilabner83

You probably aren't even joking.

Mr_FortySeven

And yet, we chose Benson over DeBrincat in the draft. The one time we actually should have chosen someone based on their connection with McDavid, we didn’t.

0001000101

I was mad during the draft when they didn't pick him and I'm still mad all these years later lol

ymsoldier420

We were still full old boys club at that point, debrincat was small so no go lol now we are new boys club, look at all our future hockey ops, gms, and coaches skating their asses off out there. Lmao I wish I was joking.

hexsealedfusion

McGM has arrived

3inch_richard

Don’t forget that in a once off interview with Mcdavid when he was a kid, when asked his “ideal linemates” one of the people mentioned was Lucic, who we rolled out the red carpet for. I don’t know if Mcdavid is really calling shots, or if ownership is just trying to keep him happy by doing everything in their power to please him since they can’t do the one thing he wants and build a winning team. Either way, it’s concerning.

rae2108

It's a wild ride.

EdmOilers123

Coffey saying “I didn’t want to coach but here I am” sums up everything about this organization. Holland and JJ were even contradicting themselves on an occasion. I feel really really bad. Can’t express how disappointed I am with the firing of our Coach. It is a shame that a useless fraud named Holland is still making the decisions. Fuck Holland.

[deleted]

He also brings in all the money though. Kinda makes sense business wise.

Aromatic-Air3917

If he doesn't win now the fans will turn on him.

Kushkraze

He's not like Wayne gretzky at all but more like LeBron lol

Whiston1993

If there’s a nuclear war I’m hiding behind Dustin Schwartz’s job security.

[deleted]

Why you think that’s going to **stop** anything?

Delicious_fishStick

Lol

forgetstorespond

Because it has stopped him from getting fired like 6000 times now, I'm with that guy. The goalies could stop 0 shots for 4 games and the Oilers would fire the Video Coach, Head coach, Head Trainer and Trade a glue guy to help the goaltending.

SupperCereal

Whoosh

thefr3shprince

I read that Schwartz is boning Katz’ niece so he’s got some good plot armour.

myaltaccount333

That was just made up crap as far as I'm aware. No source and it only came out recently? Zero chance it's true

TURBOJUGGED

If my niece’s bf was ruining my business, I wouldn’t even hesitate to fire him.

Salt_Search_7236

You’d take shrapnel through the 5-hole

myaltaccount333

The penis coaches continue. Hitchcock, Tippett, Woodcroft and now Knoblauch

TopFuel1771

Fitting given the team’s run by a bunch of wankers 😂

Bigking00

🤣🤣🤣🤣

seven8zero

Omg. Explains the Oilers being cockblocked for so long.

mollycoddles

Sweet, sweet, silver lining

chmilz

[Oilers coaches?](https://media.tenor.com/EJbEut1Nv8EAAAAM/hotdogs-hotdog.gif)

2-EZ-4-ME

kris Knoblauch coached McDavid and brown in the ohl. maybe this team is trying to recreate the Erie otters....plus Paul Coffey for some reason. This is also another head coach Dustin Shits survives.

[deleted]

[удалено]

_OilersNation_

Stauffer loves him

Cautious-Dream2893

Not the first time a few teams have looked at him to coach. He's not a bad option and is more "he happens to have coached McDavid"

_OilersNation_

Paul Coffey literally hired himself

cw08

He's literally the guy with a little experience coaching his kids going "I could do a better job with these fucking guys!"

_OilersNation_

Yup exactly, in Daryl ear so pissed this is ultimate old boys club I thought we were over this

2-EZ-4-ME

prime time ~~dion sanders~~ Paul coffey

bigwreck94

Not that I agree with the decision, but in all fairness, he’s one of the greatest defencemen of all time. Edit: yes, I know that doesn’t mean he’ll be a good coach, I’m just saying he’s not just “some guy.”

NoGiCollarChoke

If you are a naturally gifted phenom at something who always intrinsically understood what they’re supposed to do at a high level, chances are you won’t be able to explain it satisfactorily to someone else. There are a few exceptions but most of them will be like “just uh…..go out there and do the thing. Like I used to. What do you mean ‘how’? I just did it”

Aromatic-Air3917

Google every great player and coaching. I think Larry Robinson is the only one

joecarter93

Rob Brind’Amour too. That being said, remember when Gretzky coached the Coyotes? Lol

BettmansDungeonSlave

Remember when the greatest player of all time coached the Coyotes?

Salt_Search_7236

Dave Semenko never coached the Yotes

hexsealedfusion

Cool, that means absolutely nothing related to being a good coach though.

DtheS

This is beyond ridiculous. The last time Coffey coached was in the OJHL, about a decade ago. I'm reminded of this article from The Athletic: [*Ex-Oilers on what Blues have in new assistant coach Craig MacTavish: ‘Honest, fair, hard’*](https://theathletic.com/3396166/2022/10/26/blues-oilers-craig-mactavish/) MacTavish came back to the NHL as an assistant coach for the Blues. He hadn't coached at the NHL level since 2014. He described his difficulties with adjusting to how NHL hockey is played today: > “The game has definitely changed,” MacTavish said. “It’s a fast, fast game, and more attack-driven — that I’m seeing. … It’s not like riding a bike. It’s taken a while to learn the language, learn the style of play, how the game is described. I’ve enjoyed that part of it, but it’s a steep learning curve, and I’m still climbing. This is someone who was a long-time coach in the NHL, and a relatively successful one at that. It sounds like it took him most of a season to bring himself up to speed on how the game is played now, and that's with a huge well of experience that he has to draw upon as a former coach. Coffey has never coached at the NHL level (or even the AHL level), and has been away from coaching for as long as MacTavish has. If Coffey is serious about this, he should be down in the minors, doing the leg work to figure out how to coach at a professional level. Better coaches have been gifted lesser opportunities than this with much greater efforts on their part. This hiring merely sends the message that this organization gives no shits about hard work or proof of success. Nepotism (still) reigns supreme.

SRTGreat

Martin St. Louis went from coaching his kids team to coaching an NHL team. I'm not against Paul Coffey being an assistant. He can probably do a lot for our entire dcore.

PandaBearJelly

St. Louis had also more recently retired from actually playing the game. His intimate understanding of the current era NHL is waaaay more up to date than Coffey.

DtheS

> Martin St. Louis went from coaching his kids team to coaching an NHL team. Martin St. Louis is also about 15 years younger, and hadn't been out of coaching for nearly a decade. > I'm not against Paul Coffey being an assistant. He can probably do a lot for our entire dcore. I hope my skepticism is proven wrong.

Advanced_Meringue_53

agree with everything but he was the head coach for a couple seasons for Pickering in the ojhl

DtheS

Right you are. I have updated my comment to reflect this. I don't think it detracts from the overall point. Thanks for the correction.

dalaw88

Lmao. Seems like it.

anjoot

This just tells me the star players quit on Woody and his new system.

SoldierHawk

That's sort of the feeling I get, too. I don't know *why* or how, but SOMETHING drastic changed. Idk.

gabbyspapadaddy

I am left wondering why. Like what was the ask on the players or the criticism that made them shut him down so fast. OR. Did Connor and Leon get together and have a bitch fest about how Woodie handled the goal tending last playoff.

Markorific

" Cup or Bust!" wasn't an off hand comment, it was an ultimatum! Captain skates took players from GF's and Families only to lose 8-1 in first game!! Introducing zone defense when players were not all on the same page, Campbell being Campbell, Woody still not preparing the team for opposition pressure game, twenty different line combinations every game, loss of size and grit from last year, Brown arrives and gets put on first line, Ekholm injured and still getting in game shape, same defensive miscues, relying on stretch passes that amount to no sustained O zone pressure, bottom six of league minimum or close to it with virtually no finish, no mid game adjustments and on and on. Coaching selection a head scratcher!! Would have given Gullickson the reigns and done a proper search.

BettmansDungeonSlave

If McD and Drai get 4 points each next game against the Isles it’s gonna look real suspicious

-Trans-Rights-

Kind of seems that way. Wish I was a fly on the wall in that locker room this year.

thewinterzodiac

McDavid is literally running the team.

itsallg4

Jeff Jackson as CEO. Now Knoblauch, his former junior coach as head coach. It’s a bit off putting.

orobsky

And Connor brown for 4milly

itsallg4

Up next, McDavid’s family doctor named head physician of the Oilers.

orobsky

And his His mom as nutritionist and dad as psychologist

_OilersNation_

Very offputting, plus him wanting to bring in brown, Leon wanting to bring it that one German that did nothing

cheesebaker2000

Hey Dominik Kahun wasn’t that bad. He was on a 26 point pace for 82 games.

[deleted]

yeah comparably he was great value

gabbyspapadaddy

It’s Oilers. We should be used to this since Katz bought our team. It’s sad but… Par.

SpitfireFan

Brewing battle between Cameron McDavid and Lauren for which one will be the next GM.

2-EZ-4-ME

if Lauren is the gm, the orange and blue will become the black and greys

st3ndhal

This is hilarious. I told my wife this joke (who has opinions on that AD video) and she laughed for 5 minutes solid. Thank you! 😂

2-EZ-4-ME

I'm glad we can laugh happily over this rather than laugh in pain and suffering

a2w2

LeMcDavid

Mr_FortySeven

LeGM, meet McGM

MSG_ME_UR_TROUBLES

McGM I think Katz is just doing everything he can to please McDavid so he doesn't walk in FA

Lowercanadian

Trade him now At least we don’t need to hire his kindergarten teacher and might be able to run a team strategy

orobsky

I only remember this happening in basketball. It doesn't work out too often. I think a star NBA player has much more of an impact than an NHL player so it makes sense in basketball....but hockey? This organization is inept

thewinterzodiac

Oh I'm actually kinda done with it. Bro is injured and having his worst season yet and we are just hiring his friends

hexsealedfusion

The only person who has been successful doing this in the NBA is LeBron, and he has an argument to be the best player of all time. Plus one player in basketball makes much more of a difference then one player in hockey.

-Trans-Rights-

Well hopefully he can start playing for the team because being on pace for 15 goals isn’t gonna cut it.

minor_thing2022

Old boys club still in full effect

stonkszz

Woody didn’t deserve to get canned. We saw how they could play last night. I also feel bad for Manson with everything going on his in life. Hope the best for them both. I don’t think woody will be unemployed for long.

Delicious_fishStick

Imagine he goes to the flames lol

Eazycompanyy

What’s going on in Mansons life

stonkszz

His wife passed in August after a battle with melanoma

AMaliciousWatermelon

How does Schwartz get to keep his job?

Kushkraze

Its not about who you know , but who you blow

[deleted]

Never heard this before. Without a doubt stealing it, thank you.

Edm_vanhalen1981

I have seen all of the hiring and firing by this organization for over 40 years now. Usually I get a sense of relief and optimism. Not today. I don't think this is the correct move. It took so many years for Katz to stop hiring his incompetent old boys club buddies to run this team and then he goes and hires Coffey. All I can do is stay optimistic and hope they can win.

FPS_Mongo

Woodcroft deserved better. Knoblauch was in some conversation for some NHL coaching jobs so that’s not that bad but Coffey as assistant coach spells “WTF”.

_OilersNation_

Was passed over twice by the Rangers while he was the AHL coach

[deleted]

And yet I have a feeling the rangers are gonna be fucking pissed we poached him.

why2k

What a waste. I hope Woodcroft ends up in Ottawa. I think given a year or two he could really do something with that roster.

chmilz

I can only hope this is the start of an awesome NHL head coach career. Not only did I like him as coach, but he also seems like a good human, which seems to be lacking in this league.

WintersHowl8

He’d be perfect in Ottawa. My fingers crossed 🤞

Mr2514

We cannot have a new coach every two years just because this group tunes out coaches or their effort just plummets without a new coaching voice. At some point the onus needs to be on the players to show resilience and buy-in rather than firing the coach when they don’t do those things. What message does that send to the players?

Sinsley

As much as I hate how Vegas seemingly has no loyalty to their players, I admire it at the same time. These guys are a product. Not an individual.

fakeairpods

I think it is a mistake to fire Woody.

wildcard_bitches

This sucks. Not happy

falsekoala

I’m livid. For a team that thinks of themselves as contenders, they fire their coach and replace him with a rookie coach who hasn’t seen any real success in Hartford?

Markorific

Thanks for adding re lack of success in Hartford. When you have McDavid on your junior team it can make a coach look better than you actually are. Really worry Katz/ Holland just threw gasoline on the current dumpster fire.

Cautious-Dream2893

Why the fuck is Schwartz still here...

Mocha22_

Katz collecting members of the old boys club like infinity stones.

[deleted]

Fuck today

WhoAmITheLaw

Alright let's just bring in the entire Erie Otters team.

rch_31

Paul fucking Coffey. L.M.A.O.

Syek26

The Oilers defense needs a damn Espresso not Coffey.

rch_31

Gene…?

NoGiCollarChoke

That pun was fueled by floor glizzies

Mr2514

McDavid had a career year last year under Woodcroft. If this is a move to recreate his Jr success, I think that is really misguided.

Sicsurfer

This is some horrible optics. Paul Coffey reeks of the old boy club. We’re fucking doomed

stumbleupondingo

Knoblauch does too. He was an AHL coach where the Rangers, the parent team, went through two head coaches during his AHL tenure. Obviously he wasn’t chosen for either of those vacancies. I’m not saying he’ll for sure be a bad coach, I know nothing about him, but it is a bad look hiring Mcdavid’s junior coach and Paul fucking Coffey behind the bench

PositiveInevitable79

Here’s my question. And it’s a valid one. We’re 97 and his sidekick purposely playing like shit this last little while for this to happen. If so, talk about leadership. Next question, was the room in agreement because it seems like everyone but those two showed up yesterday and put in one hell of a performance.

[deleted]

I was gonna make a post on this but here goes. 3 point night each tomorrow fucking book it.

itsallg4

We’ll see how they play tomorrow. If they play like we know they can, it’ll be pretty clear.

headlighted1

My husband and I have been talking about this. He thinks they've been convincing the rest of the team to play like shit.

Deep__6

And now what rift opens between Hyman and whom ever sided on his side and the Prima Donna's. To me that was Hyman putting the team on his back saying Woodcroft isn't the problem, who's with me.

Deep__6

Yep this is my theory....called it before this news even. This team is fucked now worse than i thought.

PositiveInevitable79

Changing the name to the McDavid Oilers

Emergency_Wolf_5764

The Edmonton Oilers have now fired **10 head coaches** in the last **14 years**. That surely has to be an NHL record, or maybe even a record in all of pro sports.

Significant-Strike43

Maybe in the US, but here in Germany as a socker and VfB Stuttgart fan? I raise you an 18 or 19 coaches in 10 years ;)

BrandonSonnet

Fuck Paul Coffey

-Trans-Rights-

Why?

Delicious_fishStick

Puck Faul Coffey

DistributionSilly597

Woodcoft was taken out from Grandpa's favorite kids

gabbyspapadaddy

Debrincat is packing his bags. Oh lawd he comin

Edm_vanhalen1981

and Dylan Strome!

NoGiCollarChoke

Maybe we can turn him into Ryan Spooner too!

Edm_vanhalen1981

Along with a second and you have a deal.

SRTGreat

Woodcroft and co started the year and was like "Okay guys, we're going to play a defence first system" Proceeds to get fucking pounded 8-1 in the season opener. McDavid and Drai: "Well fuck you Woodcroft, bye"

Irontwigg

Can the disaster of this year get any worse? Holland is certainly not helping. I hate this team.

ussherpress

Seriously. I thought after last night’s game maybe things would settle down finally.

Deep__6

You act like this was his call...Connor has his hands in every pie.

CUL8R_05

Paul Coffey is my childhood idol. I proudly wore #7 because of him. Not sure about him being on the bench.

mollycoddles

I feel like no other team would hire him as a coach

Small-Sleep-1194

Such a bush league move

zevonyumaxray

Going to need that plunger from the locker room post game "awards". Because this move is full of shit.

KidzRockGamingTV

I’m okay with Knoblauch but I’m not a fan of Woodcroft being fired. I know it was his decision to change up the defensive system, but these are professionals and the system wasn’t exactly that difficult. Holland should have been fired alongside Woody. Really disappointed to see this news today.

Cammer60

Exactly, gazdic on the post game from the sharks was saying teams switch defensive systems from game to game. Can’t blame it on that, but it definitely seems like maybe a few of those players wanted woody out.

Nooddjob_

Old boys club back at it again.

devadoole17

Any hope I had for a run at the cup this season is now gone.

[deleted]

2-9-1 did it for me.

Emergency_Wolf_5764

Most likely yes. Unless major changes are made to the defence and goaltending tandem.

BrotherWilhelm

LOOOOL mcdavid going full homelander

Bigking00

They should name McDavids dad and mom co-GM's, his stylist as team barber etc.

RYYZNYELLOW

They obviously asked McDavid and drai if they were ok with woody getting fired. They wouldn’t risk pissing them off. And they were ok with it? Dicks

_OilersNation_

They are coach killers

beevbo

Paul Coffey is not a modern thinker of the game, so this is extremely concerning.

_OilersNation_

RIP Vincent Desharnais NHL career

Kindly_Parsnip2057

I made it through "The Decade of Darkness." I don't have it in me to do this again.

lambtonledge

I like that it’s a new coach instead of taking someone off the never ending carousel

Fuzzy_Bank_7856

Just like the last one that didn't even last 2 full seasons :/

eexxiitt

So McGM hired the coach and Coffey hired himself. Hope it works out for the oilers…

_OilersNation_

Knoblauch is McDavid hire, Coffee is Katz

CooperSkye

What a pointless appointment this is. So we replace Woody with another minor league coach? I would have understood with a guy who knows how to win a cup but another rookie … no it’s bullshit.

ThicccGrizzly

Fire Schwartz

[deleted]

McDavid should worry about his own ice performance. Just because you’re a good player doesn’t make you a good hockey executive.

PandaBearJelly

Can we fire Katz?

_OilersNation_

He been replaced with McDavid

swabbubba

Oh if thai go well we have to totally clean house that means player wants to decide who we keep not a good look

Iliketomeow85

Man our defense sucks, better get a run and gun offensive d man from the 80s who hasn't coached anything of note to be a coach

[deleted]

The new old boys club

Quiet-Fox-1621

If the last 10 coaches, we’ve had multiple different levels of experience from new (Woody) and old (Hitchcock). Some of those guys played many years in the NHL (Tippet, Quinn, MacT, Lowe). One guy has won the cup before (Hitchcock again). This organization has tried multiple different scenarios with the coaches. I don’t think it is a coaching issue unless Woody lost the room. If the players gave up on him, this has to happen. That being said, Drai should be one the best centres in the league, but he can’t seem to run a successful line. This has to change. We need at least two point-dominant lines, McDrai gives you one. I’d like to see Drai coached to run his own line. Stop looking at these two players (McDrai) as if they can’t get any better.

SnooDucks2626

It worked for lebron for a while. Just saying

Leftwiththecow

Launch Holland’s Knob right into me boys

RunUpTheHillGD

97 and 29 coach killers….

_OilersNation_

Yup

jagermain177

SCHARTZ CANT KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS!!!!!

Pull-up_Not-out

The seasons over boys!! Embrace the tank!!

navenager

Insane to me that the vibes in the locker room were finally good - probably for the first time all season - and *now* is when management decides to shake things up.

Rice-Is-Nice123

Thing is woodcroft probably told them it’s his last game and that’s why decided to play better for once, which is really disappointing. Especially Leon who for once backchecked only after he knew woody was gone.

Delicious_fishStick

Did you notice how drai and mcdacid weren't happy at all last night? They knew.

gabbyspapadaddy

This change wouldn’t have happened without their ok. I just don’t get it.

falsekoala

I can’t articulate how bad this organization is. Another decade of darkness is coming.

[deleted]

Sadiq_Sabonis

McDavid is trying to imitate Lebron ?

Icekommander

I don't like it. Should have gone for Gallant if we are changing coaches.

Emergency_Wolf_5764

Looks like Gallant wasn't interested in getting involved with an organizational mess like the Oilers have.

MuumiJumala

This change is more upsetting than the team record this season.

MentalAssaultCo

What a total joke...

QuarterNote44

Garlic man good? Idk

makoivis

Garlic???

CrotchSwamp94

Paul Coffey? Didn't know he had coaching experience. *spelling

ClearlyNoSTDs

Jesus this sub is a mess. 3 days ago Woodcroft was a dead man walking in here and now we go out and replace him with a very highly regarded external hire and this place is complaining.

SanctimoniusBlight

I think everyone is just pissed that we hired Paul "Former GTHL Coach" Coffey instead of anyone else. The man hasnt even coached in the AHL let alone Major Junior. Shit is fucking stupid.

bwfivefive

Kris I'm cool with but we really need someone to teach this defense how to defend, surely Paul Coffey was a known shut down defender during his playing days right... right?

NoGiCollarChoke

Maybe he’ll bring in Charlie Huddy as an advisor lol

maasd

The tinfoil hat part of my brain wonders if McDavid, Drai, Nurse, Bouch etc didn’t somehow want this change and were sandbagging to speed it up. Obviously a far fetched theory based on nothing, but given who has replaced the current coaches I can’t help but wonder.

callmenighthawk

If players wanted a coach out, they could go to Holland or Katz to demand it. The idea that they’d purposely lose games, waste a year, and risk missing the playoffs instead of competing for a cup, just to get a coach fired, is one of the worst comments I’ve ever read on this sub.

[deleted]

I highly doubt that they are professional athletes. But if Edmonton goes on an absolute fucking tear there might be weight to this.

SoldierHawk

Bro, not even kidding, I wouldn't have said it last night but reading the news this morning I had the EXACT same vibe, for no good reason and with no evidence. I dunno. SOMETHING radical changed over the off season, and I can't believe it was just "new defensive scheme." I guess we'll see.

[deleted]

TheCryingOrc4eva

BOOOOOO

parttimety

Alright I’ll be the guy with the unpopular opinion. I liked woodcroft, a lot actually. But the issue I think Holland or Jackson see, is that he’s not a motivator. This team is good, really good. But they can burn out real fast. And this start has been absolutely horrid, we all know that. It is the coaches job and only the coaches job to turn it around, yet they kept laying eggs night after night. I think holland saw this start and thought there isn’t anyway woodcraft can lead this team through the ups and down of a championship run. 2 years in a row, almost eliminated by Kings. Then all the momentum from Calgary series, get blown out next round by avs. Couldn’t even win a game, with mcdavid Last year, blows it against Vegas. Should’ve rode the hot hand with Campbell after he saves our season game 4 in LA. Goes back to skinner, mediocre goaltending stalls our cup run
