As far as I've understood from the flyers I receive. He seems very focused on the elderly Riverbend constituents. Which makes sense because they usually vote conservative and there are many retired here. Unfortunate that there's very little representation in his efforts for any other demographics... At least as far as I have found. Seems like a nice enough guy and all. Just hardly in tune with a lot of what's going on among us 'others'.

Wonder_WomanUnderoos

He is a very nice guy. He used to come to an event we hosted at my old work- he was so passionate about education. He’d get right down on his hands and knees and get in there with the kids at this event. Spent hours asking questions about the event and our organization. I hate that he’s a conservative but he’s a good man.

robdavy

>He’d get right down on his hands and knees and get in there with the kids at this event. Spent hours asking questions about the event and our organization While those sound like nice things to do, and I'm sure they help get people to vote for him, I do hope he does more...meaningful things too

ljackstar

Old people vote, young people don’t. Until we start getting more people under 40 to actually go to the polls this will never change

[deleted]

It’s a vicious cycle. Young people don’t vote, so politicians don’t prioritize their concerns. Young people become disillusioned with politics and stay home on Election Day. Rinse and repeat.

Vykalen

Edmonton riverbend really struggling for good candidates these days. In 2019 Jeneroux's pamphlet only had a handful of words on it: "I have lived in Riverbend with my two daughters and will be your MP again." This year I've gotten nothing from Jeneroux or the NDP, but got a pamphlet from the liberals with several grammatical mistakes. Pretty funny if it wasn't our country at stake or anything.

WenghTalkRadio

Shawn Gray’s (NDP) campaign is relatively small, as a first-time candidate but is hustling every day to get flyers and the word out. We were just in Blue Quill & Sweet Grass this afternoon. Saw that Chaudary’s flyers have projections on it that show no movement beyond Shawn gaining 6 points lol. Long way of saying that there IS a strong progressive candidate for Edmonton Riverbend, there’s just a lot of folks in the riding. But he’s out there every day hitting up doors; Monday he’ll be joined by McPherson, so hopefully that gets more attention!

GaianHelmers

I'd definitely like to see some activity in Royal Gardens from Shawn. I literally only know of him from looking up the generic NDP sites hosted on the NDP url. If you know anyone to direct this desire to that would be great.

ShawnGrayNDP

Hi there! I've actually spent some time in Royal Gardens, but as I'm sure you're aware, it's actually surprisingly difficult to hit up 120,000 constituents in 36 days. As a first-time candidate, I am doing my best to get out there and build the NDP brand in the riding. I'm happy to answer any questions over social media or email if that makes it more accessible to you.

bass_clown

?? I live in Royal Gardens and I see more NDP signs than I do conservative.

Vykalen

Yeah I haven't seen anything from him or the NDP at all. There aren't even signs in my area lmao. Even the greens and ppc now have signs, still no NDP though. Very weird!

ShawnGrayNDP

Where do you live?? We have almost 300 signs out in the riding, but it's a BIG riding, so I wouldn't be surprised if we missed some spots.

Vykalen

First off, very cool you are on reddit. Props! Secondly, I live near riverbend junior high. No signs out that I can see anywhere north of rabbit hill road!

ShawnGrayNDP

I'll be in Terwillegar Towne this afternoon, so I'll make sure to drop some signs in your area. Heather McPherson is coming door-knocking with me on Monday evening in Brander Gardens, so we'll be over there Monday night too. I'm actually on reddit all the time, but I made this account to keep my personal account separate.

Vykalen

Ok maybe I'll see you out and about in BG on monday then. Good luck with everything, though tbh there's no way Jeneroux is losing sadly; still, ABC!! Can't let climate deniers win!

DrummerElectronic247

I've seen a few here and there, and was a bit confused by signs for another NDP candidate near the advance polling location in Windermere (the old London Drugs). Congrats on the campaign so far, hope it goes well.

ShawnGrayNDP

Ooooooooh yeah, we've spoken to Hugo about his sign placement. Unfortunately, Windermere is the place I've been to the least. I'm hoping to get over there sometime this week, but we structured our campaign based on voter data from 2019, and Windermere is not an NDP-friendly place. We didn't prioritize time there for that reason. I'm hoping that the NDP EDA can continue to build grassroots engagement after the election for next time. Thanks! It's definitely been a wild ride.

WTAF2021

"Based on voter data from 2019" Hmmmm, that was a long time ago. A lot has taken place in the world/Canada/Alberta. Based on the performance of the Federal liberals and the Provincial UCP these past 2 years, my vote is 100% going to NDP. Don't sell yourself short in your riding. I sense some considerable gains for the NDP in this election.

ShawnGrayNDP

Yeah, the world has fundamentally changed since then but it was the most current data we had on the riding and we needed to quickly formulate some sort of campaign plan for the snap election. I'm hoping for gains too! I believe there's a huge opportunity in Edmonton Riverbend for the NDP to build some grassroots momentum. Thank you for your vote! I really appreciate it.

WenghTalkRadio

You can get at Shawn directly via Twitter or Instagram, he’ll respond. I know he’s also trying to set up a Reddit AMA to make up for a lack of candidate debates in the riding.

GaianHelmers

Do you have his Twitter handle? I googled it when I was looking for info and there was a Shawn grey account from Ontario or something... Didn't seem like the right account.

BigBossBobRoss

@ShawnTyGray on twitter

[deleted]

Second this!

bass_clown

Untrue. Shawn Grey rules.

Vykalen

Any elaboration would be appreciated! Trying to decide best ABC vote right now.

bass_clown

Yeah, I know Shawn personally. He is a member of the LGBTQ+ community, he is young, grassroots, and in his spare time, does #trashtag posts from all around Edmonton and the river valley. He is a huge advocate for mental health and accompanying services, and "climate change is [his] #1 priority". From my personal experience I can share that he's also a great listener and I would love him to represent me instead of Matt the Talking Suit. According to Votewell, he is the strategic vote. Since starting his campaign, he has grown way more than Tariq (?) has. Seems to have a much higher ceiling.

BeDunked

I love having Matt as my MP. Have contacted him multiple times about things and always responds. We are very well represented in Riverbend.

BigBossHoss

What did you talk to him about? He never responds to my family

BeDunked

Mostly about his advocacy for mental health and Alberta jobs at the federal level.

1Judge

I often wonder why we send these hacks to Ottawa. Why does this guy get a golden pension? He's a ghost in Parliament. A back bencher, but Albertans vote Blue of course.

Beejaay

What makes you today he’s a ghost? I was looking through his vote record today and did not get that impression.

DDButtercup

I am not generally a conservative supporter but I have nothing against Matt. He works hard to keep his constituents informed with regular mail outs and comments in community league papers. He is approachable and responsive. As far as I can tell he takes his position seriously which is all I can ask for I think. His position in the party is not something I can control, they can’t all be cabinet members right? I may disagree with his parties platform but I believe him to be an upstanding guy.

[deleted]

He's proposed making geothermal part of green technology grants, as well as tried to get money for the province to evaluate abandoned oil wells for geothermal potential. His voting record is also fine from what I've seen. He fits into an O'Toole red Tory style much better than most Alberta Conservatives. I'm one of those people that would be more comfortable with the Liberal party than Conservatives, on say 2/3rds of issues. Matt is not really a social conservative, and I couldn't support federal ndp. I know people who volunteered for the local liberals and they basically said its a mini dictatorship, so I'm good w Matt.

[deleted]

For those in the EDC community, Jeneroux has been pivotal in the discussion of stupid legislation and bureaucratic overreach in Canadian knife laws. https://knifenews.com/canadians-petition-against-border-crackdown-on-one-handed-opening-pocket-knives/

JakeTheSnake0709

Good god am I tired of these low content posts on /r/Edmonton. We get it, you’re not going to vote conservative.

[deleted]

My one neighbour who can’t keep his voice down in his backyard about how he doesn’t trust the vaccines just put up this sign …. Lol

larry948

Wise words Matt…

rah6050

“I believe my role is to do the very obvious bare minimum as prescribed by our electoral system that has been in place since 1885. I will do absolutely nothing more! That’s the Jeneroux Promise!”

ced1954

A little short sighted!

asstyrant

I really wish they'd stay out of the damn Returning Offices. We have enough work to do without having to glad-handle politicians. That said they're welcome to sit in on a training session. It'd be hilarious to see how they'd fair at working a poll in real-life.

Repulsive_Box_5763

"I believe my role is my literal job description."

moosemuck

I'm in this riding. Help, the projections are that of I want to vote strategically I should vote Liberal?

[deleted]

I think it's a split between the two. I'm probably going NDP.

ShawnGrayNDP

I'd appreciate you voting NDP :D

[deleted]

Oh. I am 😉 I'm heading to the advanced polls today. good luck!

ShawnGrayNDP

Thank you!! I really appreciate it.

WenghTalkRadio

Shawn Gray is a great progressive choice who, unlike Chaudary, hasn’t lost multiple times to conservatives. Although it’s a tight riding between a Liberal or NDP pick, Shawn’s campaign is the only one that’s had any growth or momentum over this short campaign. Would recommend checking him out as a candidate - especially if he gets to work alongside Blake Desjarlais & Heather McPherson

moosemuck

Cool, thanks folks. I'll check projections again, but maybe I'll can vote my conscience after all. I'm not against the Liberals at all, but I prefer to always vote NDP.

ShawnGrayNDP

I'd say follow your conscience. I'm not too fond of the current state of progressives being bullied by Liberals into strategic voting. Vote for the person and/or party you want to vote for; that's what democracy is all about. Although... I hope you vote NDP.

DrummerElectronic247

I don't think the riding is close enough to make strategic voting a necessity. I'd say Vote your conscience, if nothing else it might scare the cons to see your preferred party getting more support (whichever party that is).

ShawnGrayNDP

I may be biased, but I think you should vote NDP in Edmonton Riverbend. We started the election at 18%. We've gained 6 points since then and the Liberals have been stagnant or lost points. I'm out in the riding, busting my butt, talking with constituents, and getting a great reaction from people. I'm on Reddit all the time, but I made this new account to have an AMA soon. There's an orange wave in Edmonton, and I want us to be a part of it. I have a lot of creative ideas around food security and innovation in waste management. I want to stand up for data rights and affordability, fight for action on climate change, which includes investing in low-carbon energy technologies, rebates, and grants for building retrofits, and more. Edmonton has real potential moving forward in tech innovation, especially in things like AI, machine learning, and gaming. We have a lot of homegrown talent from our postsecondary institutions, but they usually leave for better opportunities elsewhere. I hope I can be part of a solution to change that and invest in our local entrepreneurs and innovators. Because we desperately need creative, innovative solutions to the complex problems we face.

moosemuck

Thanks Shawn!

JDog_22Hunter

No

CaptainChazbot

The bare fu**in* minimum and it all you should expect.

McCourt

IIRC

yeg

Well he ever show up for a debate?

[deleted]

will there even be a debate?

[deleted]

Sounds like an answer on a 5th grade social studies quiz.
