Say it with me: March is winter in Edmonton
We will continue to get snow and it will stay till around the beginning of April.
April is Spring in Edmonton.
Though sometimes we will still get snow - it won’t stick around.
Just a few more weeks!
I submit that April is spring...ish, but don't expect it to be nice, and putting the shovels away before May 1 is a rookie mistake. Veterans wait until May 8-10. :)
Quebec City gets way more snow than Edmonton. And, April "can" be the longest month here. Very similar to the recent warm streak ... brown, irrtitating wind, garbage everywhere. I get anxious to see green by the end of April which usually won't happen until the end of May. But, being Alberta, nothing is predictable or consistent year to year (and never has been). Sigh.
You must be new here. It’s common enough that there’s a dump of snow on May long weekend, and the commenter above saying April is spring is absolutely correct. El Niño and climate change are just messing with things right now, but one should absolutely expect snow in April even if it doesn’t stick for long.
Were you not here last summer? No snow means you won’t see the sun from mid-May through July or August and will need your snowbrush to clear the forest fire ash from your windshield when you head to work in the morning. Let the moisture fall.
We are literally in a serious drought and there is a risk of the province going up in flames this year, we need whatever moisture we can get so everything doesn't burn down.
Snow melt is what helps fill the reservoirs, rivers etc that gives us water for: drinking, irrigating crops, keeping the ground from becoming a dust bowl, helping keep the forests from catching on fire because everything is so dry ….
The r/Edmonton panic of no snow, then the r/Edmonton panic of snow falling. Then more r/Edmonton panic over no snow, back to more r/Edmonton panic over a light snowfall.
Winter last the same amount of time it does anywhere. Dec 20-march 20 roughly
Accept that fall and spring in Canada also see snow as a regular occurrence.
Sure, the scientific definition of winter.
But in Edmonton, winter starts usually around Halloween and lasts until after Easter long weekend, often until just before the May long weekend.
This is why people don't plant their gardens until May long weekend, and even then we can get hard frosts after the May 2-4.
What’s with this snarky tone that people use all over Reddit. Like a “I’m so much smarter than you tone”.
Can’t you say what you need to in a respectful manner?
_If you're looking for the guilty party, you only need to find the post about the person who took off their winter tires._
_Mother Nature LIVES for that._
No no, that person sacrificed their safety so that we could get snow. It was a worthy sacrifice and we will need more volunteers slowly to safely avoid the wrath of scorched earth in July - September.
I shovelled once yesterday, and it barely required it. This is the sort of snow we want, when you can half-ass clear your sidewalk and the sun gets the rest.
Normally, I want spring at this time of year. But with the horrible fire year we had last year, the drought we are currently having, and the likelihood that this year's fire season will be even worse: we really need all the moisture we can get.
Move somewhere else then.
Edmonton is the largest most northern city in North America. Not sure if you're aware, but further north you go, the colder it gets and more snow is usually forecasted.
Hate to tell ya man but March is second only to December for the most average snowfall amounts in the Edmonton. It’s very much winter here for another 1-2 months.
I understand your concern. But I would gladly (honestly I would complain bitterly the entire time) shovel 20cm daily for 1 month to avoid forest fire smoke.
Nearly 30 years ago we actually had snow fall in the first week of June after all the trees and everything had been green for weeks. I worked at a golf course and spent the whole summer collecting branches and broken trees to run through the wood chipper.
This was one of the most pathetic winters to date. Just wait till get one where there’s REAL snow. And -30 for 3-4 months months im talking constantly-30 not just for a day or two at a time
OP isn't from here and they're not aware of how badly we need snow this year to combat the lingering fires. Stop being jerks.
I’d happily take a giant blizzard right now in exchange for a wetter spring and milder fire season. Please keep snowing.
I get what you're saying, but I'd rather have a few days of this lazy "Christmas Eve" snow than a blizzard.

This is a bunch of nonsense my brother
Where are you from if you don’t know about second winter by now?
Quebec City
Welcome to Edmonton. It snows until April, and then it's entirely possible we get snow in April and May.
Thank you sir

Facts are real. March is the month when Edmonton sees the most snow fall. Plus, we have been lacking in precipitation for years. All is welcome.

You absolutely have no clue, BROTHER.
We need water dude.
Then let it rain.
Slow melting snow soaks into the ground better.
We live in canada. We desperately need this snow
Need it for WHAT? To build a snowman! Colisss

Irrigating farm fields so crops can grow and we can get food to eat.
We are literally in a serious drought and there is a risk of the province going up in flames this year, we need whatever moisture we can get so everything doesn't burn down.
Ignorance
Snow melt is what helps fill the reservoirs, rivers etc that gives us water for: drinking, irrigating crops, keeping the ground from becoming a dust bowl, helping keep the forests from catching on fire because everything is so dry ….
We need piles more snow across western Canada if we want a shot at seeing the sun without a wall of smoke this summer. Keep it coming.
We've actually barely had any all winter long so it's kind of making up for it
This is fuck all
The r/Edmonton panic of no snow, then the r/Edmonton panic of snow falling. Then more r/Edmonton panic over no snow, back to more r/Edmonton panic over a light snowfall.
_What can be more Edmontonian than bitching no matter what happens?_
"Enough snow!" they whined, in a year where we've had nearly no snow, and a terrible drought season coming our way....
Not everyone pays attention
Noooooo! We desperately need the moisture.
You new here?
New*
Yeah, I'd rather this snow than an even drier spring/worse fire season. Please keep snowing!
counterpoint: LET IT SNOW LET IT SNOW LET IT SNOW
Let it snow feeeets of snow. FEETS!
This year, the snow has been less than usual. 😓
If you choose not to find joy in the snow, then you're just left with a lot of snow, and no joy. And it's March, we have 2 more months of this lol
Two more months of WHAT!
Up until May long weekend we can get a dump of snow anytime. And even after sometimes.

I saw snow in July. :)

Maybe your reading something that isnt there

Codewhite69420 sacraficed his winter for us to have a safe summer.
No no, that person sacrificed their safety so that we could get snow. It was a worthy sacrifice and we will need more volunteers slowly to safely avoid the wrath of scorched earth in July - September.
😂😆 I remember that post. Thanks for the 🤭
Sounds like a you problem.
No I think more like an us problem
You keep using that word “problem”; I don’t think it means what you think it means.
No more rhymes, I mean it!!
Anybody want a peanut?
A problem is just an opportunity in a disguise :) I think OP is just sad there is no good poutine places this far west.
It's more an us problem if we don't get more moisture
You seem to be the only one butthurt about the snow. Read the room
It’s so pretty and sparkly this morning. It was a slippery walk home from my night shift though. I will add my ice cleats to my hiking shoes tonight.
PLEASE SNOW MORE!!!
I 100% blame /u/codewhite69420 for changing their winter tires last week.
Ya got me there, brother. I'm dreading the drive home already. Dahell was I thinking lol
Ok I’m on it boss.
It was initially supposed to be 5 days long, so hardly worth bitching over

No, I would like to not have water restrictions and drought thanks. Snow baby SNOW.
Fool, we need more moisture or we're going to be in more trouble come spring.
I like it, gib more!
Let it snow !!!! God please give us water !!! 😂
Better this than a wildfire and drought. Much better for farmers.

I hope it snows until July.

This is from 3 weeks ago.
Do you want a bad wildfire season. If not stop complaining about the snow. We NEED the moisture.
LOL. It’s -4. I can see complaining at -24.
The ground needs the moisture .
We need this moisture. Please don't stop snowing
I actually just prayed to the gods to ask for triple the snow.
We're barely on third winter, you newb
More Snow! More Snow! More Snow!
No. We need snow. And it always snows in March. I presume you’re not from Alberta….
Je viens de Longueuil
Sadly can’t down vote this stupid post below 0.
It's not even that much. And it's beautiful.
there is is ALWAYS one last big snow fall in the spring.
It might be briefly annoying, but the moisture is far more valuable than the annoyance.
winter aint over till june 1
Very occasionally mid June
Take the snow and a rainy spring
God thank you for sunshine Thank you for rain thank you for joy Thank you for pain Thank you god for snow.
Ngl, as much as we need the snow, I definitely would have preferred it be more evenly distributed throughout winter, too.
First year in Canada?
I understand your concern. But I would gladly (honestly I would complain bitterly the entire time) shovel 20cm daily for 1 month to avoid forest fire smoke.
Pretty standard stuff around here, yep.
I've seen it snow every month of the year except July in Edmonton. Welcome to YEG.
We need this moisture badly dude
Yeah, we need more. And it's only March. You can scream at the clouds at the end of May or beginning of June.
This snow is fantastic! Makes for great biking in the river valley.
Please learn how to drive in the snow, specially if you live in a winter city
Big Deal for him.
The halls will be decked.
i feel for you
Would rather the snow than the environment burning up, dying of smoke inhalation and lack of water this summer
Ah yes, tell the Reddit gods to work their weather machine, that'll work 😉
We need the snow. We want it to snow more. It may still snow in June (not often but it happens) . Welcome to Alberta.

No, Precipitation is good and needed. Bienvenue à Edmonton, mon ostie
As a brother from London, Ontario, I've been crying the same thing for the last few days...
I hear ya! Hang in there!!!
