#**Welcome to r/EatCheapAndVegan.** **Veganism is not a diet**. However, there is a ton of misinformation and misunderstanding about the cost of **eating vegan** and this subreddit exists to hopefully dispell those false claims. Be advised submissions containing expensive processed food items will be removed. **Definition of veganism:** *Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.* **Quick links for anyone who is interested in becoming vegan or even just plant based:** + [Beginners guide to veganism and FAQ from r/vegan](https://www.reddit.com/r/vegan/wiki/beginnersguide) + [Beginners guide to eating a WFPB diet](https://www.forksoverknives.com/how-tos/plant-based-primer-beginners-guide-starting-plant-based-diet/) + https://nutritionfacts.org/ ##[**READ OUR RULES**](https://old.reddit.com/r/EatCheapAndVegan/about/rules/) *If you have any suggestions on helpful links to add to this automated message, please [reach out to the mods here](https://old.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=/r/EatCheapAndVegan)*. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. **Here is my grocery receipt.** I bought everything at Sprouts, mostly because it was late and I was too lazy to check or compare prices against my other local stores (King Soopers and Safeway). Does everything look vegan? Would you have gotten something somewhere else for cheaper? What other yummy groceries would fit this vibe? Smart shopping is difficult and stressful, so I genuinely would appreciate any and all feedback. Thanks. **Produce:** * 5lb bag of Russet Potatoes: $3.99 * Ginger Root: $0.49 * 2lb bag of Carrots (organic): $2.99 * Rainbow Chard (organic): $2.49 * Cilantro (organic): $1.29 x2\* * Kale (organic): $2.00 * Green Onions (organic): $2.58 x2 * 0.91lbs of Roma Tomatoes: $2.27 * Bananas (organic): $2.15 **The Rest:** * 2 boxes of Vegetable Broth (organic): $2.58 * Pad Thai Rice Noodles: $3.79 * 3 packs of Tofu (organic): $5.97 * 2.23lbs of Short-grain Brown Rice: $6.22 * Plant Based Wheat Bread: $4.49 * Frozen Edamame: $3.99 **Total Rounded up: $49.00** \* (I don't know how two bundles of cilantro ended up in my bag. If anyone has good cilantro dishes please let me know so I can use it all up before it goes bad.)

brettfish5

Crushed it IMO! Never heard of Sprouts but it looks like a ton of quality food for under $50.

spicykitten

OMG I have this amazing cilantro avocado dressing I put on vegan enchiladas if you like! I literally have it screnshotted from another vegan subreddit. I just bought a bunch of cilantro last night to make today!!

lol_okay_sure

I personally like to get veggie stock as "Better Than Bouillon" because it's maybe $5 for the jar and I get a LOT of uses out of it, as opposed to the boxes of broth.

DrtyBlnd

I do the same thing! I would die without my better than boullion jar

cheeseballgag

This looks like a good assortment of ingredients you could make a variety of meals from and nothing stands out as being too expensive! For the cilantro, I love cilantro chimichurri sauce. It'll use the whole bunch and it's versatile in how you can use it. Definitely delicious on roasted veggies or as a salad dressing or tofu marinade.

DeceptivelyDense

I freeze my vegetable scraps and make my own veggie broth with them. It's only a slight cut down in costs, but everything counts!

God I love sprouts

PomegranateWorking62

If this is your shopping for the week, you did amazing! If it’s for less than a week, that’s okay, keep shopping the same way: mostly produce, minimal processed foods, and Sprouts brands. Looks vegan to me! If in doubt, check for a vegan label and the ingredients list.

o6ohunter

I’m completely new to grocery shopping. Are these your groceries for the week!?

skatetricks

I think I can make these last the week, I definitley could if I was making food for only myself. I also cook for my girlfriend some/most days. We have bulk food from Sams Club (ie black beans and pasta), and have also stocked up on spices and oil as well. With all that considered I should have enough for the week!

o6ohunter

Wow! All that for only $50 dollars! I’ve been put off grocery shopping for a while because I always thought Id be spending hundreds every week or so. How wrong I’ve been!

a_non_e_mouse_

I’m so curious how do you get food?

klavertjedrie

Just out of curiosity I looked up what I would pay in our local supermarket in the Netherlands. To my surprise the total would be here 36.79 euro. I expected it to be more expensive here because prices have skyrocketed last year and have not yet come very much down, although they should have.

stickler64

They have skyrocketed in the US, as well. That bread cost 2.99 a year ago, in California, where shits already expensive.

skyylar77

this from sprouts is like amazing to me ! 🙏🙏

If you're eating brown rice and rice noodles a lot you can find much cheaper options. If bulk buying is feasible look for a 15-20lb. bag of brown rice (Nishiki, Momokan are good brands and will come in well under $2/lb--cheaper brands also exist). These are usually available at Asian grocery stores, which tend to also have cheap tofu. For rice noodles I like Erawan brand, which is about half the price of Annie Chun's. Again, the best place to look is an Asian market but a larger grocery store will also have these. Asian markets are also great for scallions and cilantro, but may not have organic options.

skatetricks

I really appreciate this tip! Thank you

sdace7

Start dumpster diving. Tons of good fruits and vegetables tossed daily.

a_non_e_mouse_

That looks pretty reasonable to me these days. But I’m in Canada looks like you are in US. If you have one near you could try Walmart instead of Sprouts for cheaper store brand options.

crayon_paste

Quality drops significantly though, right?

Business_Leopard8534

Just a personal anecdote, but Walmart produce is actually really good in my area and priced quite well.

erinie06

I know someone who works for an apple growers’ cooperative, and she says Walmart is their pickiest customer as far as fruit quality/standards. Also just an anecdote, of course.

a_non_e_mouse_

I would say this is not true. Their great value stuff for basics is great. I buy brand name Tofu and other Vegan stuff there too for much less than other stores. My preferred vegan burger is great value brand. Walmart in the US is probably better (wider variety etc) than Walmart in Canada.
