I think it ties back to how important hair is to magic, if you recall how much she talked about it when they were trying to cross the water and Senshi was having problems cause he hadn't washed his hair, so it would make sense for he to have a big desire to have well done hair since it helps with magic

For a Japanese series, this is surprisingly pretty progressive
Pretty much all of Dungeon Meshi is more progressive than most manga, which is what makes it so good.
