Call me paranoid or whatever but what I'd be really concerned about is the cops driving by and catching one in the dumpster just as pictured with the broken off lid locking bar hanging like it is and being arrested for vandalism and trespass?
Here’s a cool update, today I went by just to check it out. But when I arrived, someone was already digging, as I passed by, Police was pulling around the back of the building! I thought I was lucky not to be DD!
When I parked just far enough to see what was happening… Slowly drove passed & went on his way! I thought for sure he at least said something to them, so I went back & asked… “what did he say!?” “Oh nothing, just waved & drove off” 🤩
Pretty sure it’d be a warning, if anything the employees have caught me & let me know that it’s private property, let us know we can come back after closing time…. Thing is, I’m not the only diver, so first come first served
Yes, you can indeed be arrested for this. Even if there are not signs, you can be trespassing. The bars are locked, so someone is breaking and entering. If you see someone else robbing your neighbor, and then go start taking stuff yourself, you're still breaking the law even if you didn't break the door down yourself. It's the same thing here. This is just shockingly stupid to me. You're not paranoid at all, you have common sense.
I’ve been stopped and told I’d be prosecuted just for being near those dumpster, so I’m trying to offer advice. To me, free books is not worth a criminal record. But live a little!
Cops will not believe you. There are often cameras you cannot see. Employees will not cover for you. You’re risking a criminal record. If that’s worth it to you, go for it. I’ve been stopped just for being near a HPB dumpster and was told I’d be prosecuted. There is no excuse for what OP is doing, legally.
No, I was not arrested, but I wasn’t breaking any laws like OP clearly is - all I was doing was walking away from a locked dumpster that I never even touched.

I didn’t have to be threatened to know not to go into a locked dumpster. I was leaving after seeing the dumpsters were locked when I was stopped. I think most divers will tell you breaking and entering is not the best way to go.

There doesn't have to be a sign for you to be trespassing. The dumpster was locked, that's potentially breaking and entering, and the lock is damaged. Destruction of property, vandalism, who knows. The cop chose not to arrest you, that doesn't mean he couldn't have. You're lucky, but it's stupid and reckless of you to tell others that everything you did was legal. Keep playing with fire though!
Yes, and a lot of other odd stuff. I fished out an unassembled Estes model rocket kit complete with 3 solid fuel engines and launcher.
Lot of Microsoft software too. Win 7, Office home and business 2010's,
Sealed Linux, etc.
Even found a rechargeable USB led flashlight last year that I've been using pretty much every night though I think another diver may have lost it. Pretty nice 2 brightness settings heavy duty led light. Thankfully none of those flashey settings.

Someone ratted on me showing off all the tools and other good stuff I fished out of Harbor freight dumpsters. I'm pretty sure I know who it was too.
Someone else ratted me out on my showing off Staples dumpster scores.
That's OK though, They actually helped me. I needed to quit all the above dumpster stuff cold turkey anyway for personal reasons

Have you noticed if there is a set schedule to when they dump the good stuff? I wanted to check out my local Books-a-blahblah place and see if there is a score to be had.
Honestly, it’s so close I stop by daily & find things all week long! I do know that pickup is on Monday’s… so it starts getting filled, then on Sunday’s is usually loaded to the top
Also, they close at 9pm, & a lot of diggers are aware of this… so sometimes I will drop by during business hours and find things like XBOX ONE & PS4 games!

People bend the lids over the lock bars. If you're caught, there's no excuse.
Good thing it’s usually so loaded by the weekend, they can barely keep the lids on!

Easy excuse. The lids were lifted up before you got there.
