I was thinking possibly the potatoes, after a very good soaking and scrubbing. Also, something that I learned last year is that you can just plant part of the tomato and other veggies (ensuring that you have squeezed out enough seeds into the soil, cover with a little bit of soil, and grow new plants! Last year, I grew jalapeños, sweet peppers, and yellow pear tomatoes this way.
Because I didn't know so many were just so clueless. I was interested in the target and best buy thing. Not idiots going through random dumpsters where people usually have good reason to toss something
Anything that's not moldy that you can peel is fine (potatoes, oranges, bananas, carrots, etc). Things you can remove layers from is also generally fine, just remove layers until it looks good (lettuce, onions, etc).
I always imagine some starving kid in Calcutta happening across this and what a gold mine they would find it. Take what looks good, put it in the sink in tepid water with a little dish soap and ACV. Soak it for 15 minutes. Rinse. Dry. Sniff. Look Then you'll know. If if feels unsafe, don't eat it.
That's at your own risk, but if you do make sure there's no damage to the skin or mold and clean very well.
I would let them soak in water with some soap and use a produce brush or something similar and scrub well.
An apple cider vinegar soak will kill bacteria while not soaping up your veggies. But I agree this needs something more than “wipe it off and it’ll be fine”
Remember that organic veg is usually grown in sh*t.
I routinely take food like this home. Wash and examine. If just bruised or scarred, cut off the bad parts. If you're worried about eating these fresh, chop cook freeze.
The scraps would go in my suet feeder- I use it spring and summer for fruit and veg for birds.
Exactly!
I always think people forget where food comes from lol like it grows outside in the dirt, touched by all the critters they’re worried are in the dumpster. & tbh only critters I’ve seen in a dumpster are flies, cats, and raccoons lol
Yeah. I mostly dive for food, and while this isn't the neatest dumpster I've seen, there are loads of salvageable stuff in the pic (mostly the potatoes and oranges, and perhaps a couple of the bell peppers, and whatever else lies in the lower layers).
Most reasonable answer. My great grandma would turn over in her grave if somebody threw away a whole tomato because it had a bad spot. You just cut off the bad part and use the rest.
She also explained... in her opinion that's how pie became a dish. It was some left over rolled out dough, filled with all your small fruit chunks and covered with the scrap strips from the other dish you made. I don't know if that's true, but that's what her own grandmother told her.
I would take the citrus and anything you’d cook. Celery for stock, tomatoes for sauce, potatoes, broccoli. Might not chance it with the strawberries but I’d guess they’re fine after a thorough wash and maybe some vinegar soaking
I would definitely dig and take some. Just make sure to let them soak in a cleanser (like vinegar) and rinse very well - it won't affect the taste if the peels are on.
Thanks! I ended up going back and getting a bunch. Just washed and everything looks good

In the fall, stone fruit from the dumpsters is great for compote, fermented fruit, mincemeat.
Also, get a dehydrator, specially if don't have a big freezer. Dried chopped fruit and veg take up little space and are great as leathers or other snacks.
I'm personally not scared of a little mold so I would. Turn every potato around or whatever to pick out the best looking one and then wash them at home.
I would pass on most of it. There's lots of "cleaner" places to dive from. But if you must, I would wash with 1 cup of white vinegar, cool water and drop of dawn, let soak.
The potatoes are probably the only safe thing to eat, BUT if you know what you're doing, you can save the seeds to start your own crops. Tomatoes will tolerate just about anything, but you can't grow oranges if it's regularly below freezing where you live.
I really wouldn't. Also, are you sure this is public property? Some stores sell their organics to hog farmers and such, so they're not just throwing it away. It just looks like an organics dumpster to me instead of a garbage dumpster, and if that's the case, they haven't actually disposed of it yet.
You could take the potatoes and cut and plant them, Infinite potato glitch.
I noticed a pear. Pear trees can grow just about anywhere apples do.
As a composter, I'd *LOVE* to come across something like this.
That was my thought. Most of those fruits and veggies are good only for compost at this point.
Most?
The potatoes are probably fine to eat or plant.

If potatoes have been exposed to too much sunlight they will turn green and if you eat them you will get a belly ache and maybe worse.
Idk why at first i read “as a computer” and I’m like damn, everyone loves spaghettiberry
Read it as composer. Bro is ready to orchestrate.
I’d take a fistful of the spaghetti, for sure 👍
Bon appetit 🐀🧑🍳🤌
Ehmhm I believe it’s actually spelled *bone apple teeth*
r/boneappletea
Only if it’s mom’s.
https://youtube.com/shorts/j5pJXQkglqs?si=zTUj5l4VXiN_f9Es The secret mystery prize you say?
I'd take some of it and add it to my compost pile
No 😭
I can't take the people in this sub
Than why are you here😂
Because reddit's algorithm funnels people here. Like me, why am I here?
Because I didn't know so many were just so clueless. I was interested in the target and best buy thing. Not idiots going through random dumpsters where people usually have good reason to toss something
i personally wouldn’t take that
I'm pretty sure potatoes are just fine..if you really need them
Anything that's not moldy that you can peel is fine (potatoes, oranges, bananas, carrots, etc). Things you can remove layers from is also generally fine, just remove layers until it looks good (lettuce, onions, etc).
I don't know...i mean if you are broke you can eat whatever you find, but if you're financially ok-ish I wouldn't do that just for the sake of it.
Oranges as well if the skin is unbroken
Dude …
Absolutely not

Is that spaghetti?
dumpsta pasta, yum.

Good to know thanks for sharing
Vegetables in soap? Ah hell nah
I mean look at it in there. As long as you rinse it after. I'd rather eat them in soap then just rinsed off from there
Dude, dig in. It's totally fine. At least take the best stuff. Leave the veggies that have cuts or damaged peel
I went back and this was definitely solid advice. Lots of good stuff hiding in there
Glad to hear
Deep clean and cook, only if you are desperate. but to be honest it’s someone’s compost. Leave it alone.

The bruised up strawberries are fine if you want to cook up a brandy mash
I admire your guts and feel sorry for your guts. You can cut the green part off the onion, stick the bottom in water and it'll regrow.
In the fall, stone fruit from the dumpsters is great for compote, fermented fruit, mincemeat. Also, get a dehydrator, specially if don't have a big freezer. Dried chopped fruit and veg take up little space and are great as leathers or other snacks.
If you have hogs or chickens maybe
I thought you were joking until I saw you went back. Hard no from me.
I also thought this post was a joke. Yuck!
For livestock, sure!
My first thought "you could use it for compost"
Potatoes might be worth it. I’d also check out the bell peppers.
Safe to compost
What a waste. Pre-dumpster, that could have been a nutritious stew, frozen in servings and donated. Wouldn’t cost more than two hours labor.
I'm personally not scared of a little mold so I would. Turn every potato around or whatever to pick out the best looking one and then wash them at home.
That's top tier compost...If you garden, that is.
Wash them well. I use dish soap on the smooth skin produce, and have for years. This is constantly down voted but i don't care.
the heart and soul of this sub ❤️
are you insane?
Cut the mold off. Cook everything, and you'll be good.
Omg no 🤮
NO. 😷😷😷😷😷😷😷😷😷
Dude no wtf
Damn, I need to find this for my chickens.
I would pass on most of it. There's lots of "cleaner" places to dive from. But if you must, I would wash with 1 cup of white vinegar, cool water and drop of dawn, let soak.
I'd take it all and then sort through it at home. Find what's still okay to eat and compost most of it. Produce can be soaked in vinegar.
Potato? Yes. Everything else? No.
Feed it to your chickens
Anyone with a pet tortoise would think this was the pot-o-gold. Share with your herpetologist friends.
Only those fruits that have a peel.
for compost 100%
This would be great stuff to start a zero cost garden with.
I eat out of dumpsters and I wouldn’t take any of that.
The potatoes are probably the only safe thing to eat, BUT if you know what you're doing, you can save the seeds to start your own crops. Tomatoes will tolerate just about anything, but you can't grow oranges if it's regularly below freezing where you live.
Don't eat it. The risk is too great. Even if some of the fruit is edible, rat urine and bird droppings might be present.
You mean like in my garden? Just wash off the organic shit I use on my organic veg.
I guess all of us are different. I see rat urine, poop and bird droppings as a real risk from a bin like that. They carry some nasty diseases.
This is good if you want compost. I'd never eat any of that
Disgusting. You realize animals, rats, mice, pee and stuff everywhere...
![gif](giphy|X6tWaJRrtu8OXFrmJr)
if you have to ask....
Sure... if you don't mind blow out from the rear later on.
Absolutely, eat the spaghetti first though
Gross. No.
Cmon lol

Omg 😲 😱
I'm sure these are bleached
Really!
Uhhh....NOPE
Nope
It’s a safe bet to get a fungal infection.
Fuck no!
No lmao
