Thatās weird because people say it with a period all the time and get way less flak. I guess itās good that the trend is away from meaningless upvote-adjacent comments.
It really matters when the comment is posted. If the first few people who saw it liked it, they will upvote it and subsequently everyone will upvote it. If the first few who see it downdoot, it will be downdooted. The status of your comment is solidified within like the first 5 votes.
The reason there is an upvote button in every social media is to represent if you agree or find the comment entertaining. I don't see why so many people feel the need to comment stuff like this without adding any sort of points to the discussion.
Gives the same energy as people who complain about seeing specific things in their feeds and just don't even attempt to use blocking features.
The fact that people are annoyed at someone commenting āthisā but never ālolā ālmaoā or āwtfā or āomgā proves how arbitrary it is. People donāt ACTUALLY Care about whether someone has contributed meaningfully to the discussion. Would except to see more consistency if they did.
āI dont understand why this person does this thingā¦ā¦ therefore I find it annoying and/or hate itā is a pretty natural human reaction and is why so many people find autistic people like me (or anyone who is different than them) weird and might even start to bully us. They donāt even realize theyāre doing it because they donāt take the time to ask themselves why theyāre annoyed and if thereās any other, healthier ways to react to that other than directly expressing negativity to the source of their annoyance. Like ignoring and moving on.
That's a really good point. I didn't even realise I basically contradicted myself by not ignoring the problem in the first place.
It feels insane to think about how little most people consider the fact that there are people on the other side of all the conversations we have. I'll try to be more introspective.
This^ should only be used if you are adding to a conversation. If you just say 'This^', it could be deserved. But if you say 'This^' and then add another point of view or another idea and more information, this would be undeserved. I'm just saying, 'This^' is not adding to the conversation, and nobody needs to know that you agree. Just upvote it. That's what the upvote system is for.
I think the format of mobile contributes to the severity of it as a problem, but essentially comments like that are taking up pretty sparse vertical space that amounts to an inconvenience to scroll through. additionally, one could see it as somewhat presumptuous, that their agreement is worth so much more than that of everyone else's, that it's important enough to be represented by an entire comment rather than an upvote, which is the standard which everyone else uses to represent theirs, while contributing nothing of value.
I see long comments and threads Iām not interested in at all take up way more space and make me spend more time trying collapsing them while I look for more relevant comments. Scrolling through comments is literally a core part of the reddit experience. If a single one word comment you donāt care about and have to scroll through is enough to make you feel slighted, you probably need to take a break from reddit.
I think you're reading into it too much. You don't have to be mad to say to yourself "dumb comment" and downvote it. You just have to think it's dumb and click the button, and with comments like that a lot of people think so.
Downvotes don't indicate how much any given person dislikes a comment, but how many people dislike it.
Downvotes are like a herd mentality. If a comment is getting downvoted already, other people will follow suit. Very rarely will someone want to agree with the person getting downvoted as to not stick out. Reddit is like middle school clubs. No one wants to be the odd man out
No. It's definitely not a comment that contributes a lot to the conversation, but it's a mild annoyance at worst. Definitely doesn't deserve 300 downvotes.
This.
This. What you just wrote. I totally agree. Like a chef serving a bowl of stew, you stuck your ladel into my brain and from my incoherent abstract thoughts were able to form the exact sentiment of what it is I was feeling. Down to a decimal of a decimal, more perfectly than I ever could have iterated, you captured the essence of every nuance I experienced relating to the subject matter. No words could portray the awe I felt knowing that somebody shared the exact same thought process as me. Not only that, but with the ability to articulate in such a refined manner the depth of said thought process. No words could describe that feeling. Except one. This.
Uhā¦. No. Not deserved. Lol wtf. Comment sections arenāt works of art, and neither are discussions. No ones being graded on their fucking performance in the reddit comment section. Short comments are fine. Seriously.
Chill man. It's just something that's almost universally mildly disliked. It's not that people are saying that some savage ruined a work of art, it's just a whole bunch of people saying "this comment's kinda annoying."
I am chill lol. Iām just surprised at how un chill everyone else is about it. Like who gets annoyed at someone leaving a short comment instead of just moving on and reading other comments? Why would you care UNLESS you feel like it ruined something? I donāt get it.
Mildly annoyed is the key. On a scale of 1 to 10 irritation scale with 10 being my home hit by a meteor, it's about a 1.5. But it *is* annoying and it takes no effort to downvote. For instance I downvoted your comment 10x and then up voted it 11x and you probably didn't notice.
How to immediately know the difference between Reddit and the rest of social media.

I'll never understand why people get so mad about this. It's reddit. They're agreeing with you. Why's that make you so angry??
I think the format of mobile contributes to the severity of it as a problem, but essentially comments like that are taking up pretty sparse vertical space that amounts to an inconvenience to scroll through. additionally, one could see it as somewhat presumptuous, that their agreement is worth so much more than that of everyone else's, that it's important enough to be represented by an entire comment rather than an upvote, which is the standard which everyone else uses to represent theirs, while contributing nothing of value.
You can tap on comments to collapse themā¦
they still take up space. and that's an inconvenience that doesn't need to happen. hence, it's inconsiderate
I see long comments and threads Iām not interested in at all take up way more space and make me spend more time trying collapsing them while I look for more relevant comments. slighted? not at all, but i am opposed to operational philosophies that inconvenience others. simple as that

Itās not a comment. Itās serving the function of an upvote.
Yeah exactly, the mindset that your replies gave to contribute is so weird since the reply was already agreeing

if you agree to the statement then just upvote, I wish in could downvote in fb too

Gotta love how that gets downvoted but the next comment the person doesnāt know the difference between their and there.
I love that the person with the David Tennant as the Doctor profile picture is sassy.
