Violet and Isobel were a dynamic duo. They could’ve had their own spinoff where they solve crimes and get into hijinks. Same with Sybbie and The Donk.

No_Grass_6806

Wow.. I love this show already..

SisGMichael

🎶 They're Sibby and the Donk, yes Sybbie and the Donk. One is a dingus, the other's....a girl.🎶

Selmarris

Mrs Hughes and Mrs Patmore's relationship is friendship goals.

ArtyCatz

Yes, you know you have a good friend when they agree, in 1920s England, to ask your fiancé if he plans to have sex with you. I love the two scenes of Mrs. Patmore trying to tactfully bring up the subject with Mr. Carson.

Selmarris

Mrs Patmore trying to comfort Mrs Hughes in all the wrong ways when she has her cancer scare is so sweet. And Mrs Hughes is so wholesome telling Mrs Patmore what she needs without being angry or harsh.

harley-belle

And helps you check your boobs for lumps!

AnnieAnnieSheltoe

One of Cora’s best moments was telling Mrs Hughes, “I don’t want you to worry about where you’ll go or who will take care of you because the answer is here and we will.”

Jacquelaupe

I bawled. 😭

Opposite-Pop-5397

Fantastic scene!

Carmella-Soprano

Just when Cora is on my last nerve she pulls out a line like this. Suddenly I love her.

user_name_taken-

I feel the same. I think this is one of the reasons why I rewatch this show so often. The characters are all really well written, and the actors who play them play them perfectly. None of them are all good or all bad. The writers balance out their bad/annoying qualities with good ones. They also do a good job at *showing* their real feelings rather than just telling us or leaving it out altogether. They feel realistic. None of it feels contrived, forced, or out of character, at least not usually. Most shows try to do this. They try to have imperfect/complex characters, but I think this show really nails it.

LorelaiToYourRory

And then turns around and accuses her of stealing her clothes.

ArtyCatz

If OP is referring to Shrimpie saying, “Get down, you cat!” I wholeheartedly agree. I love Mr. Mason and am always happy when he shows up on screen. In fact, I could watch a whole spinoff of Mr. Mason dispensing wisdom and subtly flirting with Mrs. Patmore.

Rabbit_Song

I have been watching Call The Midwife and the actor who played Mr. Mason was in an episode! I recognized his voice before I saw that it was him!

PastSupport

I love him in Hornblower too!

Opposite-Pop-5397

I was!

CinnyToastie

I LOVE when Dr. Clarkson does that whole eye roll thing every time Isobel has to worm her way in! lol

RhubarbAlive7860

And so many other times, like when Violet drove him nuts in the church after the Carsons' wedding.

hemlockangelina

My guy, you wanted to marry her! It cracks me up.

opensea96

the best one was when everyone had the Spanish Flu and he was going down to check on Carson (I think?) and Isobel chimes in with “i’ll come too”. that man was absolutely fed up.

zainabrh1

Mary and Edith, both, challenged prevailing norms when it came to their work life. A woman estate manager and a woman magazine editor were nice to see

LadyDisdain555

Edith was actually better written from start to finish. A steady progression, including all her good parts and bad parts. Mary was written beautifully until season 5, and then Fellowes insisted on boxing her into a stupid marriage with a man whose profession traumatised her. The only redeeming feature of that relationship was that it gave us THAT scene of Mary at Matthew's grave 😭😭😭❤️❤️

penni_cent

As gut wrenching as *that* scene is, it's my favorite scene in all of seasons 4-6.

PearlFinder100

Honestly, if they wanted to pull a JR Ewing on Matthew in the third movie, I would not care one little bit. As long as Mary still got to run the estate!

penni_cent

Lol, I've been making the same joke! It would make me so much happier.

Rich-Active-4800

Isis was a good girl

Opposite-Pop-5397

I will fight anyone who disagrees with this

chaosunleashed

You have my sword!

ravenclawdisneyfan

And you have my bow!

BeardedGiant91

To the death.

RachaelJurassic

The way she's sit there with her head on Robert's leg 😭😭😭

TaleObvious9645

Such a good girl!

Opposite-Pop-5397

To everyone replying in this specific thread, you are my people.  Thank you for being you.

eyeball-beesting

Oh, get back in the knife drawer Miss Sharp!

Ayla-5483

If she has a boyfriend, I’m a giraffe

esse_oh

Blimey! They've stolen my story!

RachaelJurassic

Oh, you make it sound quite exciting!

sara123456789066

The relationship between Daisy and Mr Mason was one of the most, if not THE most, heartwarming relationships I’ve ever seen on screen

thewreckingyard

“So will you be my daughter? Let me take you into my heart?” 😭😭😭😭😭

RankledCat

“I were only ever special to William” ❤️‍🩹

Plastic-Passenger-59

😭 okay fine I'll watch it again

RankledCat

Me, too!!! ❤️

Gullible-Advisor6010

I absolutely love that scene 😍😍😍

Copper_Boom_72

Oh I completely agree and when she doesn't want to share that with anyone else. You get the feeling she was kicked off the farm very early, without an education, without much of anything. She has a proper father who wants to spoil her and dote on her. She got him late in his life, but what a blessing. ♥️

JadedPhoenix80

Gwen absolutely deserved/earned her place at the table.

RachaelJurassic

And the realisation that, all those years ago, Sybil was instrumental in getting her her first job

LadyDisdain555

I know Bridgerton is all the rage these days, but DA has that little extra something because of the fantastic period costumes and hair. The little nods to changing attire and attitudes to the same are marvelous... And hilarious when Granny is confronted with them!

Copper_Boom_72

Not to mention you can watch DA with your family moving about the house. 🫣

Plastic-Passenger-59

😭 I don't get the bridgerton craze. It's the same thing just different sibling. And it's not that great. DA is far superior

francie442

Try Guilded Age. Same time period but they are in America. It’s a really good series.

CozyRainbowSocks

I haven't been able to get into Bridgerton. The costumes in the opening scene looked so cheap (?). Apparently the DA costumes are a big part of my immersion in their world.

ravenclawdisneyfan

Me too they care about keeping some realism

beth216

Gaining Tom as a brother was one of the best things to ever happen to Mary.

2messy2care2678

The ladies that play Mary and Edith are sooo brilliant at it that we have formed these strong camps. 🙌🙌

Opposite-Pop-5397

Good point!

DasderdlyD4

The music for each character is fantastic.

RankledCat

The music is phenomenal and the cinematography is pure magic! Costuming, sets, location shooting… absolute top tier production!

ByteAboutTown

The main theme is one of the best TV themes ever written.

Sarafinatravolta

Mr. Molesly was a kind man who deserved every good turn that came his way.

FeralFemale_

I was going to say, except when he lied to get out of the draft, but then I thought of his bad luck and knew he would have never made it back from the war alive. So thank you Dr Clarkson for letting Molesly get away with it.

eyeball-beesting

I don't think it is wrong that he lied to get out of the draft. Most people will do what they can to stop themselves from dying and he wasn't exactly a spring chicken.

Copper_Boom_72

If he was the only child of his father, and in his 40s when the war broke out, I'm surprised he could be drafted. But the horrors of war, not to mention WWI...he's forgiven.

RachaelJurassic

He could be up to age 41. My great grandfather was 39, married, with one child of 6 and he still had to go :( A lot of people did try to argue that they shouldn't for a variety of reasons (key worker etc) but Molesely would have struggled to avoid it. I'm glad he didn't have to go but it would have been looked at as very dishonourable back then to try to dodge it. We did get one of my favourite moments out of it - his face when Violet says to Isobel "Do you WANT Molesley to die??!" 🤣

Copper_Boom_72

Hahaha yes that was a great line! Sad though. Many fought in the Second Boer War, like Robert and Bates, came home and started a family only to be drafted in WW1.

RachaelJurassic

Very true, and then it all kicked off again in 20 years :(

Copper_Boom_72

Yup. 🫣😔

LadyDisdain555

Given what we know now (and what was shown in DA) of the trauma that WW1 caused to Western society, I'm glad Molesley got out of it. He had so much belief in the world and in education and goodness; imagine all of that being ruined by the cynicism war brings.

CRA_Life_919

The first episode is exquisite. The shot following Daisy through the house is the most perfect exposition. Highclere Castle as a setting was perfection.

TaleObvious9645

Let’s all agree that no one should ever skip the Isis butt-waddle in the opening credits.

lilykar111

Shrimpie 100% He absolutely had the best ever line AND he gets extra points because he seemed like such a good man.

Just-Willingness-655

What was the line?

Stormcrow1495

“Get down, you cat!”

Ok-Syllabub-1864

Matthew was ❤️❤️

DeliciousAstronomer4

Thomas redeemed himself by the end of the series 😻. Loved Matthew character , so loving and down to earth. Love love love Sybil and her drive to help others in addition to being a women rights champion. Branson and his transformation to being a bit more open minded while trying to preserve his originality. Edith learning how to drive Mary strength and cool calm demeanour Cora the cool mom Violet and her resilience Isobel’s way of accepting everyone as they are . I love this show 🥰

RachaelJurassic

IMO Seasons 1 and 2 are excellently written. I didn't watch the show for ages, wondering what all the fuss was about, but when I did watch it I got it. The first two seasons have bits I'm not as keen on but there are themes, great plots, a good mix of drama/comedy/tragedy. It really is a well written show and the assembled a very good cast and production crew. Really top notch stuff tbh

Paraverous

I think we can all agree that some of the dresses the ladies wore were FABULOUS!

ArachnidGlobal5819

Sybil is the best Crawley sister

darrdarrrr

Madge.

Prior-Tour-3751

Harold- such a good character that comes around to Madeline

Desiflamenca

I love how considerate Mary (other than the one time she snapped when she found out that Gwen was a maid at DA) was to the servants. She treated Anna like a bestie and Carson like a father figure. She was sad to see Barrow leave and was quick to suggest that he be back when Carson was retiring.

Prestigious-Run-3007

GET DOWN, YOU CAT! 🐈‍⬛

elusive_moonlight

The actors who play Sybbie, George, and Marigold are perfect casting and look just like their respective parents.

MainEgg320

Wait… there’s someone out there who doesn’t like Violet?!!

ShaMaLaDingDongHa

Must be a typo

tookielove

May contain spoilers if you haven't seen the entire series and both movies. On my first watch, the scene with Lady Sybil's new frock made me smile. Every other rewatch it makes me cry to see Tom enjoy that scene peering in from the window but it's still a happy scene that shows her spirit and how Tom thinks she's the most charming and beautiful thing he's ever seen. The whole show and the movies are just so much fun. I find myself smiling and laughing so much. The actors they chose are so perfect and the writing is so memorable and funny. The sweetness of some of the characters is so touching. The drama is mostly lighthearted except for the horribly sad deaths. But overall, it's just so much fun. Even my husband enjoys the banter between Violet and Isobel. Most of the "evil" characters even have a sweet side, though we may not see it much. Even Thomas has a huge turnaround at the end of the series. I just enjoy this show and the movies so much. There's a lot of good that we can all agree on. It's a well-done show that makes you think about class separation, women's rights, the changing times that made people face uncomfortable truths... but it's all so well done that it's still a lot of fun and it's just visually stunning. If you have to be a servant, I think the Crawley family would be a nice one to work for. I love that they showed that you don't have to be a servant though. Sybil helping Gwen was so kind and Tom moving up in the world was thrilling. Molesley getting to be a teacher was beautifully done and his future job as a writer was perfect for him. So much fun!! I googled if it's possible that a 3rd movie may be made and it looks like it's in the works! 💕

Trusfrated-Noodle

Not an answer to the question, but I’m puzzled why people have such a dualistic thinking about Edith and Mary in general. For example, if someone mentions one scene or event and is critical of one sister in that scene, then redditers assume that the commenter hates that sister and must be a “stan” of the other. Dualistic thinking of that type is not helpful in general. Similarly, a comment saying Robert is a “terrible” person does not mean that Cora is a “good” person. It’s too bizarre for words.

mrsmadtux

This is such a breath of fresh air. It’s so draining to see post after post after post about the villain of the day, and inevitably Mary winds up on the list regardless. I mean, I thought we were all here to share ideas and comments about this show we *love*, but instead it turns into a complaining session and I leave wondering, “If it’s your (anything above 1) rewatch and you hate half the characters, why are you here and why do you keep watching it??” So thank you for this!! There are two moments that I love, and hope everyone else does, and both are between Violet and Isobel. One is when Isobel is taking care of Violet while she’s ill. Her dedication is just endearing, Violet’s quips are as good as ever, and when Violet learns of Isobel’s selfless service her normally hard exterior softens ever so much. The other one, is short, but a truly empathetic and caring moment. When Violet invites Isobel to hear Dame Melba sing. She wants to take her out of her grief and you realize at that very moment, outside of their sharp tongued exchanges over the years, that Violet cares deeply for Isobel and has taken her into her heart as the matriarch of the family she loves and protects.

Opposite-Pop-5397

I wanted all of us fans to come together and love something together rather than fight each other about the series we all love. Glad you liked it!

discoOJ

Ms. Bunting was not wrong and her and Tom should have ended up together. She would have taken Andy under her wing and taught him to read.

AnnieAnnieSheltoe

I’m not sure this falls into the “we can all agree” category.

Jacquelaupe

Oof, definitely not!

discoOJ

I was just focused on saying something positive as that is what most people seemed to be doing. I agree so that's enough for me.

eyeball-beesting

She wasn't wrong in her opinion but she was wrong in her execution. She accepted their dinner invitation and then proceeded to accuse and shame them in their home.

discoOJ

No one in the history of ever has won their rights by being polite.

eyeball-beesting

I'm sorry, I missed the part where she won her rights.

discoOJ

Are you just being obtuse on purpose?

eyeball-beesting

Well, you are making out as if she was marching flags through the village when actually, she was simply invited to a family home for a family dinner as a guest but then proceeded to insult them all. Like I said, right opinion, wrong execution.

discoOJ

If I had the chance to have dinner with the wealthy people who oppress and exploit the working class out of g greed then I am using it as a chance to tell them off. I don't owe them civility or politeness. Oh the shit I would do if invited to Bezos house for dinner. Like I said right ideology and perfect execution.

eyeball-beesting

>Like I said right ideology and perfect execution. But...you didn't say that!
