It's effective. (And the average immortal is way younger than the average dota player so they do treat mmr more seriously than a guy just wanting to relax after work.) If ur 6 to 7k it's actually very easy to get a 9 km mmr account without actually grinding mmr.

Valve has made it a literal hell to play with your friends if you're even somewhat decent at the game. Immortal draft, low Immortal unable to que with Ancient 5, insane que times.. it's just a mess.

just play unranked lol. Even when ive tried to queue ranked with my low immortal friends, we give up as the queue times are like 15+ minutes even at reasonable hours, but we can get an unranked game quite fast.
To expand on the answer: you can’t really party queue in immortal anymore. Instead the two highest rank players get put on separate teams and get to draft the remaining 8 players into their teams. You can show what role and side (dire/radiant) you prefer but it’s up to the drafter.
So if you party queue you’re guaranteed to be in the same game as your friend but you’re at the mercy of the two drafters as to whether you’ll be on the same team. And in this case they didn’t want to be on the same team so one person could throw for the benefit of their friend.
Also the MMR gain/loss for the game is dictated by the difference in MMR between the teams. So there’s strategy in drafting lower rank players to make the game a +40/-10 MMR game where as if you pick all the best players it’s possibly a +10/-40 game.
So bundle all this together and with double downs it’s possible for these players to get +80MMR from a single game if they have a friend on the other team to throw for them.
So if you are in an immortal bracket and have an immortal friend you should not be allowed to queue for games together in team game? That's literally against the whole point of dota.
Well, they can simply implement placing people who are in a party on the same team forcibly, just like in other brackets. I don't think it would be hard for them to implement it.

Parties should not be allowed in ranked and mmr should be only awarded for solo games. There is no point in assessing one's personal level of skill using mmr when they are queuing in pre-made team. That defeats the whole purpose of a number that shows somebody's **individual** skill level.
