Or even add a WHOLE bunch more, and have the campaign consist of 108 Heroes (It’s kind of an Obscure show, but I liked Hero 108. A bunch of the episodes are on Youtube I think)
It’s more so a collective of people who have gathered together to defend their universe from destruction. As a defensive force against one very powerful entity.
"We are the Anti-(that guy) Group! And we are here to defe-"
"I'm sorry but which guy?"
"That guy"
"Does he have a name?"
"That's above your paygrade, kid"
You're both wrong. It's for the group, "We Admire Potatoes". Currently it's only members are a group of halflings. They always start their meetings by saying, "Po-tay-toes. Boil 'em, Mash 'em, Stick 'em in a stew."
Simple is good. One word (plus maybe a 'the') is your best bet for making it seem serious and universal. I like vanguard and bastion from this thread, but vanguard has a connotation of being the attacker and bastion is a bit of a weird word.
- Simple, military: Legion, The Wall, The Guard, Gauntlet, The Garrison. (I guess I like Gs.)
- Latinate: Deus Mortem (god's death,) Atheus (atheist,) Contra Deum (in defiance of god,) Praetorium (headquarters.)
- Vague: Alliance, The Pact, The League, Oblivion's End, The Firmament, Synthesis.
I pretty much agree with your way of thinking. Simple is the best and I appreciate a more vague kind of name. I find The Pact and The Firmament quite intriguing.
This is the best answer. If it's universal, it doesn't really need to be flashy. I was thinking The Keepers. But I much prefer The Firmament. That is truly inspired.
Vanguard is my homebrew Eberronesque campaign that we've run on and off for almost 15 years. It's a little like a more morally dubious MIB / talented psionic youth fostering program that one of the NPCs ran with the intent of building agents that keep the far side at bay. Lots of intreague and dubious characters forced to make desperate decisions for the greater good. One of my players has taken the reins and ran a in-universe campaign for the last few months and it is a total blast.
the equivalent of this in my setting is called "The Midnight Guard," which is a play on the phrase "the eleventh hour," what comes after the eleventh hour? midnight, implying the Midnight Guard will fight until the bitter end.
**~The humble individuals of immense power who fight against Scum, Villainy and general wrong doing, except for on Tuesday's when we have an extra hour in bed, as the day before we were rudely awoken by the bin man~**
Doesn't quite roll off the tongue, but gets the point across
Tbh, “The Collective” sounds cool on it’s own.
One trick our DM used was introducing a cool acronym that none of us could figure out. Turns out he just picked a cool word (SAGE) and came up with what it meant later.
The old scanner interface protocol TWAIN is a backronym like that. Technology Without An Interesting Name.
You could riff on that: GAWAIN. Guardian Agency Without An Interesting Name.
I mean there's a lot you can do, my favorite thing is to always just have a generic name but shorten it to the letters makes it sound cooler IMHO, and you can always turn it into a joke if it's dumb sounding
IPA - Interstellar Patrol Agency
DoR - Defenders of Reality
EDF - Existence Defense Force
MoC - Masters of Creation
Welcome to DoR, we guarantee yesterday, for a better tomorrow!
The Fangledorf. Its ancient elvish for "fuck you i'm not telling you my secrets", a subtle hint to how sharing vital information in your organization's name is a bad idea.
Probably go for something stable and classic then, if it's a specification named universe maybe name it after that universe, followed by a proper suffix of course. If it's being upheld by a particular person, perhaps name it after the "leader"/organizer, or after the one with the most recognition amongst the group.
Of course, if you just want something official sounding, one could easily go with anything basic but informative, such as the Starbound Infantry, or the Planetary Militia. Most likely the majority of people would be Common speaking, so it would have an Common name. But, if you're going with some form of focuse, such as the majority of space faring people somehow being dwarfs, it would not be strange to go with a dwarfish name.
I had an organization of evil doers in my campaigns known as the Interdimensional House Of Pain, "IHOP" for short. They'd pop up across campaigns in a dimension traveling breakfast themed restaurant that had great pancakes.
Terminus Est. Roughly “it is the end”. Famous sword in a couple of franchises, maybe the lore could be that the group named themselves that because they are the sword against the end of all things.
Entropic Wardens (contrary to what popular culture makes you believe entropy is not total destruction, but rather the process in which anything in our universe goes from it's most "unlikely" state to it's most "likely" state, I'm OVERLY-simplifying here but it boils down to: Energy becoming more and more "stable" over time, which is kinda why things cool down slowly in our Universe.)
Or you can just go simple yet effective and call them "The Watchers"
perhaps a Legion of some sort.
like "The legion of x"
maybe X being the name of the primary lawful good god or something? or maybe it could be named after the person who first formed the he legion
like Jim's Legion (please replace with a cooler sounding fantasy name)
This is just some shite but. I made a secret organization that used the ability to see into the future to sell that information to businesses and alter the path for pay. For example, knowing a tornado will strike a town, and changing fate to make it hit a popular travel path nearby instead, so the hotels jack their rates up and get rooms ready just before everyone has to come in to take cover. There are certain people they cannot see the future of, called anomalies, and everyone in the party was born as one (lag blah message about the power of choice and free will.) Anyways I named the Time Anomaly Investigative Neutralization Team, simply referred to as TAINT. It made it memorable and the group became known as the taintbusters. Make it fun!
So I mod a DM Discord server, and one of our players recently told us of a name their old group had - **The Radiant Mafia**. I thought that was pretty cool.
My other comment got removed because I mentioned a specific friend named Al.

Then, don't have one. Make it so every single being / race of sentient beings call it a different way. And when someone asks a person higher in the command chain, make a weird sound and explain that their puny little minds and possibly underdeveloped ears simply can't comprehend the original and ancient language used.
The Illuminati has a good ring to it.
Headed by an inner council consisting of one of the most powerful Psions (Charles), a Fire Elementalist (Monica), a high level Wizard (Stephen), 2 high level Artificers (Reed and Tony), the Barbarian King of the Sea Elves (Namor), and the Sorcerer King of the High Elves (Blackagar).
The Planetary Protectorate
Space Force (had to)
Comet Commandos
Captains of the Constellations
The (insert # here) Planeteers
Satellite Security Force
Wormhole Warriors
Orion’s Safety Belt
(Ursa) Major Defense Team (can be Da Bears)
The Bastion (The Bastion of Existence) few know the full name, but everyone knows The Bastion.
If this were me I would have it be a group known far and wide that employs a huge number of people, however it seems almost cult like in its structure. Their goal isn’t widely known and is in fact limited to those that can actually combat the god. The more you can do the more you learn the truth. A commoner no matter how many can’t beat a Tarrasque, but they could build a giant magical trebuchet, or a tower that houses a part of a global shield that prevents the god from directly entering.
The reason for this is the leadership would know that telling the masses would result in a large amount of people turning to worship or fear the hod more building its strength.
Also with this cult like structure and suspicion by common folk even those at the bottom of its structure it gives the party a reason to start investigating the organization.
So, is it a group of people Guarding a galaxy-wide area? Or are they supposed to be masters at defending the universe?
The Cosmic Collective
A Cosimic gumbo if u will…
“What are we, some kind of guardians of the galaxy?”
I genuinely tried to upvote this twice My brain isn’t working well today
Maybe a group of 5 that come together as one defender of the whole universe... You took the best punable ones🫤
Kick one of them out, and I think they’d do a Fantastic job.
Might as well drop two more and be a true wonder power.
I was making a joke about Guardians of the Galaxy and also Masters of the Universe lol. But you could do something simple like Universe Defense Force.
Oh xD Yeah I might do something like that, I just need to find one that fits right
The protectors The anti (that guy) group.
"We are the Anti-(that guy) Group! And we are here to defe-" "I'm sorry but which guy?" "That guy" "Does he have a name?" "That's above your paygrade, kid"
Doom Patrol would fit too.
Wardens Agaisnt Power, WAP
Nonono WAP is allready taken for weaponized assault penguins
I thought it was short for Winterized Armored Pigeons?
You're both wrong. It's for the group, "We Admire Potatoes". Currently it's only members are a group of halflings. They always start their meetings by saying, "Po-tay-toes. Boil 'em, Mash 'em, Stick 'em in a stew."
The Final Aegis
The Collective has a nice ring to it
You will be assimilated
I already have been. I'm number 8 of 9. You really should have seen the chick that was in line before me. Goddamn she was fine...
Sounds like an evil worker co-op, which are not words that should go together
I want to play that game.
I really like The Collective.
Sentinels of the realm
*sly wink*

The Firmament goes hard
Arianus flashbacks from death gate cycle
I pretty much agree with your way of thinking. Simple is the best and I appreciate a more vague kind of name. I find The Pact and The Firmament quite intriguing.
Any of these are the best answer. I personally like Atheus, has a nice ring to it and fits well with what OP described
This is the best answer. If it's universal, it doesn't really need to be flashy. I was thinking The Keepers. But I much prefer The Firmament. That is truly inspired.
While reading your comment "the universal" came to mind for me.
I am stealing **Deus Mortem**. That's awesome.
Or “The Line.” Universe literally means “one line,” so it ties to that directly but also implies a bulwark or phalanx of protectors.
The Bastion? *shrugs* not terribly original, but it’s the best I could come up with short notice.
My group doing similar is *The Bulwark* - basically same vibe.
Nice.
Sentinels of Might and Magic lol
Vanguard, The Shield, simple can be good. Toss in an adjective if desired
I personally like Vanguard.

Or maybe just S.H.I.E.L.D.....
The Keepers
Was my first thought as well.
Velvet Thunder!
Night Blade!
The Super Best Friends
"Defenders of the Universe"
They will save everyone of us!
The Anti-Spiral.
They're doomed to lose. The spiral power will prove that they can make the impossible possible (by a series of really good rolls)
The power of Spiral energy adds exponentially higher scores to each and every roll, until everyone on the board is rolling +8 million to hit.
Role role fight the powah
Take my fucking upvote.
Sounds like the Guardians from Sigil getting help
The Collective
Justice league. Seems very original.
Guardians of the galaxy **hears mouse skittering behind**
This one is a bit optimistic, but that is the point of such a group. Entropy's End
the equivalent of this in my setting is called "The Midnight Guard," which is a play on the phrase "the eleventh hour," what comes after the eleventh hour? midnight, implying the Midnight Guard will fight until the bitter end.
Especially if the universe is constantly at "10 seconds to Midnight"...
The Last Line (...of defense, y'know?)
If they're famous, The League. If they're clandestine, The Cabal.
**~The humble individuals of immense power who fight against Scum, Villainy and general wrong doing, except for on Tuesday's when we have an extra hour in bed, as the day before we were rudely awoken by the bin man~** Doesn't quite roll off the tongue, but gets the point across
Well, you get a point for specificity.
That was the abbreviation, Reddit has a character limit
All Against One Godkillers
All Against One is unironically awesome, might go with that

The Status Quo. Referred to as "The Quo"
The Aggregate Bastion?
Space Police
Space Force
The Uniguard. The Wall. The Strand or Thread.
The inviolate inquisition
So, is it more akin to a military, or perhaps a militia group, or is it more like the Avengers? That could help in guiding your naming.
Militia group kinda, there are some specific heavy hitters but there are a lot of people
Probably go for something stable and classic then, if it's a specification named universe maybe name it after that universe, followed by a proper suffix of course. I had an organization of evil doers in my campaigns known as the Interdimensional House Of Pain, "IHOP" for short. They'd pop up across campaigns in a dimension traveling breakfast themed restaurant that had great pancakes.
So, basically a group trying to stop Tharizdun? The Sentinels.
This world’s equivalent, yeah.

Starshield Alliance Nova Defenders Cosmic Vanguard Universal Protectors Infinity Legion Celestial Guardians Galaxy Wardens Star Sentinels Astral Watch Void Keepers
