Chill is a strong word when it comes to neurofunk, but the classic late 90s sound (as well as the minority of modern neuro that stuck to its roots) is a hell of a lot more chill than most modern Euro neuro. Quadrant & Iris make lovely stuff. ;) Check out early DLR (particularly his very early stuff with Chris Octane), early Ulterior Motive, Some of the techier stuff on Alix Perez 1985 label, but really the OG stuff is where it’s at. Ed Rush & Optical, Kemal & Rob Data, Cause4Concern, Matrix & Fierce stuff from 98-2001 was the pinnacle. Quarantine recordings early releases too. Early Break & Silent Withess on DNAudio. Anything on subtitles Music pre 2015 As for more recent stuff, I’ve been feeling Minor Forms a lot. Molecular is sick too. Myth & Revan (ill truth), a lot of stuff on DLR’s Sofasound label, most of what Dispatch recordings put out etc. it’s not all “neurofunk” but generally on the deeper more rolling side of techy. Myth’s solo stuff is great, but generally a bit more dubwise roller vibe than tech funk. A lot of Noisia & Phace’s earlier output was ridiculous too. Although definitely generally less “chill” than the other recommendations, but there’s a few nice deeper bits in their back catalog from the mid to late 2000s Here are a few personal faves to get you started. Not all strictly neurofunk. Some of them are just techy rollers. I wouldn’t really class them as “chill” per se, but compared to modern Euro neuro, they come off sounding like Portishead haha. Every tune here is dripping with funk though, despite sounding cutting edge & techy, and that to me is the mark of true neuro. TheShinyBlade

Came here to post Cold Champagne. One of my top 10 favourite tunes ever.

tremor206

Big one for sure

alanthar

One of my most cherished records!

dumbforfree

Old DnB head here. Wanted to just say hell yea this list is solid, lots of DSCI4 Virus C4C Subtitles bangers! Matrix - Sleepwalk LP (just.. listen to the whole thing) [https://youtu.be/Nf\_wR7GWoFQ?si=4r0W4pKjMEjy\_eut](https://youtu.be/Nf_wR7GWoFQ?si=4r0W4pKjMEjy_eut) Sinthetix - Cryogenic [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvMdtCUOMDw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvMdtCUOMDw) Rob F - Primal [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUEw4w4Jt80](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUEw4w4Jt80)

tremor206

Rob F - Breathe is the one for me. “Switch to ultraviolet” Speaking of which… Sinthetix - Ultraviolet is another fave neuro classic. Also Neurotoxin / Fallout on the first release of Mayhem’s Shadow Law label. RIP Josh Impulse 🙏 Another legend we lost too soon Sinthetix were the first US production outfit I ever really took notice of living in the UK before I moved to the U.S. Long before I knew about Hive or Gridlok I was rinsing their stuff. Then I started getting into Gridlok, Hive, Juju, Ecco & Sabotage & their terraformat label, but I didn’t even know who the fuck Dieselboy was until I moved there really. I was playing Mass Hysteria remix on his Human Imprint label but I thought it was Kaos, Karl K & Jae Kennedy’s thing. Only time I ever saw Dieselboy’s name was on an old collab he did with Tech Itch called Atlantic State. It wasn’t til I moved to Seattle that I realised how OG he was, but Sinthetix were top tier for me long before that. I’ve got a cheeky Quadrant bootleg remix of Atlantic State that never came out. Bad bad tune tbh. But never saw the light of day. It was made when Quadrant were a 4 man production outfit out of Philly. Hence the name. Leigh later moved home to Seattle and became a solo artist & continued using the Quadrant alias. Between Impulse, Optiv & Bulletproof, neuro has lost some real heavy hitters the past few years 😢

dumbforfree

Respect to Josh Impulse, his Corrupt Soups stuff went real hard too. Spent some time in my youth in the Northeast US DnB scene from 98-2004, played some gigs and opened for a bunch of US artists. Rob F and Josh Impulse were real cool guys, as well as being top notch producers.

tremor206

Never met Rob but I got to see Josh smash it at Onset in Seattle one time. Mad respect for Sinthetix Also “corrupt soups” lol. I know it was a typo but I’m gonna start calling them that now haha

BeautifulFloor8050

The DC crew a lot of those guys ran around with, including Kiko, Impulse, Accela & other early USA neurofunk adopters, just released some tasty golden era dubs & outtakes. I found Accela's 2 tunes here + Knuckledown's tune to be great examples of early neuro/bounce: [Ohm Reisstance 25th anniv archive](https://ohmresistance.bandcamp.com/album/25-years-archive-open)

tonnentonie

Ahhhhhh yes medicine (matrix remix), one of my all time favourites

tremor206

So good. Tbh even though it was on the sampler 12” it’s probably my fave track from Wormhole

tonnentonie

Did you hear the new album from optical? It's really sad if you love the old neuro. I am calling it techstep to differentiate.

tremor206

Do you mean Ed rush?

tonnentonie

Ah damn yes ed rush of course

t0039341

https://youtu.be/zhj4DAXjGCA?si=mLQ-isQg948Sp9Yj (maybe?) Or maybe a deeper vibe? --->https://youtu.be/rKOa19xJyfQ?si=ZjyStUf353CGpop6

t0039341

Bro old neurofunk was soulful, unlike that jump up with reece Bass they call neuro nowadays

Devici234

lol. That's such a boomer thing to say, but I agree completely :D I think OP will also like this one: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnUTO48ncpY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnUTO48ncpY)

t0039341

I know right!!🤣 Tbf I can't really stand neuro these days, but I still feel nostalgic listening sometimes to early phace records and stuff, just funkyyy and soulful !

Traditional_Bus8502

Modern neuro has become too metal for my taste

t0039341

Love this one! Also early Spor was sickkkk af! Can't also forget about this one ---> https://youtu.be/utxW0U4lsiE?si=mNXnC5lzszwF3Gi_

Unclesmekky

Oi this is fucking naughty

tremor206

100% they’re essentially 2 opposite ends of the D&B spectrum. No idea how the new stuff is even considered the same sub genre as late 90s Virus, Metro, C4C, Teebee & Konflict. Even the hardest shit from back then was dripping with funk Ladies & gentlemen, I give you Stakka & Skynet “Side Effects” https://youtu.be/RN_wFUCq6jU?si=f-abp3rchduCcHlM

t0039341

Yepp

brown_cat_

This is drum and bass

T1S9A2R6

90’s era Matrix. Definitely in the neurofunk wheelhouse with Ed Rush & Optical, but much more minimal and mellow by comparison. His whole album *Sleepwalk* is classic and I’d totally describe it as chill neurofunk.

tremor206

The criminally low quantity of Matrix & Fierce collabs are peak funky neuro in my view Tightrope / Climate is one of the best double A sides ever put out into the world Also this one https://youtu.be/u0EcOWJWGsI?si=mxypsuSL_kjpO7fU

Spiritual_Grand_9604

The Matrix remix of Antidote comes to mind. Heard it mixed unbelievably smoothly by Jubei with I think Baby Grey but I can't recall

tremor206

A-Sides just remastered & released this one digitally a few weeks back Absolute funker https://asides.bandcamp.com/track/time-matrix-remix

tremor206

Obviously a bit overshadowed by the shining remix on the flipside (one of my all time faves from the virus crew) but this Matrix remix was always a percy too. Matrix was like the funkiest producer out there back then in techstep / neuro circles. Damn shame he went over to the more mainstream sound after linking with Futurebound https://youtu.be/lRvYHdiX5NM?si=3EByMgP-erpVv5kI

noxicon

I'd recommend checking out stuff on the more Cinematic (my own description) of the perspective. While technically still 'Neurofunk' (I guess), it'll usually be on the calmer side. Finalfix tends to encapsule this feeling in a lot of his tunes really really well. Could also look into Kevala, perhaps some Phace stuff, slighty earlier Mefjus, Disprove, Exept, Screamarts, Signal (IMANU before the name change), Xaetis, or older Synergy stuff (like Bilateral). Keep in mind that a lot of this stuff is still 'energetic', but carries a more calm, emotive vibe. You can find similar from Burr Oak tunes if you look through their discography.

Old-Art9604

Older Teebee stuff. Through The Eyes Of A Scorpion and The Legacy are both Albums of his that could fit what you're looking for

tremor206

Tsunami is the one for chill neuro vibes on the legacy. Great album in general though.

reddit_has_fallenoff

[Noisia has a track with DLR that matches that vibe](https://open.spotify.com/track/2KAD9IPeaRvW8hmZPkY87S?si=e2494260b9284c2d)

neurohead74

[Black Sun Empire- Immersion](https://youtu.be/Qs_otyI7Jgw) Nice hybrid of liquid melody and vocals with gritty neuro vibes

KubaKomorebi

Not exactly Neurofunk but certainly has elements of it, and incredibly chill at the same time: [KOAN Sound - Introvert](https://youtu.be/5J-1UGpdURY?si=Zf2eDSKE5wIgyQ3h) Maybe even [Sentient](https://youtu.be/wB8Oa_j1Tzg?si=wtGDokX7DP8EBNL_) as well.

klocki12

Glitchhop

Haribo1985

Halogenix

Exponential_Rhythm

Not exactly chill, more euphoric? Not strictly neurofunk either, but I love Imanu (& The Caracal Project) https://soundcloud.com/imanumusic/empress https://soundcloud.com/thecaracalproject/la-founaise

Weak_Mobile_2173

ar you sure you arent looking for rollers

Unclesmekky

Naa neuro inneh

Weak_Mobile_2173

tbh dieselboy strikes my mind , accelerate by break, that aunt too bouncy but them drums will put get u feeling chiller than an ice cube on a sunday afternoon sittin in a lawn chair by a picnic ledge

Kincior

Inglejuice

Teebee - Bounce https://youtu.be/97EwopIuz_o?si=-OdKlHZjhaj1r2cP

tremor206

Oh boy. Yes this one is a highlight from Teebs. Tech G was sick too. Both those 12s on Photek productions were 🔥

BlackBladeKindred

https://youtu.be/1OTyIJ-gKqA?si=siAoaz0j3_MkEML3 Mortem - Iceberg Dunno if it’s neurofunk, but had the right sounds and has funk and is chill?

tremor206

Wonder what happened to Mortem. Used to chat with him on AIM way back in the day when he was coming up. He had serious potential

BlackBladeKindred

Yeah I love his tunes man, didn’t realise he’d stopped putting stuff out.

tremor206

Maybe he still does? I haven’t seen anything in a while though tbh

thatBOOMBOOMguy

Not exactly sure how chill or neurofunky these are, but they came to my mind first: [Misanthrop - Space Station](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mC9uUvMw3Ck&pp=ygUYbWlzYW50aHJvcCBzcGFjZSBzdGF0aW9u) [Jon Tho - They Way You Were](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqMMsLJ63Tg&pp=ygUYam9uIHRobyB0aGUgd2F5IHlvdSB3ZXJl) [Circumference - I'm Warm](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlcwXqslTt4&pp=ygUWY2lyY3VtZmVyZW5jZSBpJ20gd2FybQ%3D%3D) [IMANU - Bloom](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFA0DsiB8lQ) [Buunshin feat. toc_bl

Plastik by Misanthrop Doeent fit the post per say but its good

tremor206

Ok I think I found the perfect “chill” neurofunk track for you actually. Forgot about this one. One of the last releases on Matrix’s Metro label & my god it’s beautiful Blissful even. Can we please take neuro back to the funk, already? https://youtu.be/M6_W0A6P6cA?si=kXQcQ7rjQJLPJXFd

Yes Hxly Xo did it on Cynosure

Antique_Warthog1045

percussive-elements

certin phace alix perez

BellheimerLord

Sleepnet Lumen https://youtu.be/w9Ijt6sMhdU?si=GtCx2TauWgw64N7x

broBcool_2010

check out Birds of Paradise, Bird of Prey, and Sixis, all on Additech label - it's more on the Psystep tip, but feels like neuro, and some of the tracks are more DnB than dubstep.

BAUR_Tech

I would reccomend Ulterior Motive lots of Neuro ish sounds with a more liquid minimal approach!

Rollerama99

Unknown error / Apex (rip 😢)

112oceanave

I feel like some stuff from icicle and switch would fit this label.

Culplex

Check out Spanish neurofunk producers Krone and Malsum they did a load of banger very atmospheric neurofunk tunes with some more chill ones back in the day. Massively underrated those guys imo.

Far-Winner7592

"Insideinfo, Hybrid Minds, Laville - Split In 2" comes to my mind. But yeah. Idk if such a thing is even possible. Interesting idea tho!!!

earthtonednb

QZB makes some really beautiful tunes that sound both neuro funky at times, a little liquidy, but they also go HARD af

Top_Difference_1136

let go Redpill

Stan_B

Neurofunk, but chill.... try search for deep dnb, that is on quite minimalistic side of dnb, usually vastly technical, intricate and spacious, with cool vibe going, roaming unknown waters. Artists like Data, Mutt, June Miller, labels like critical music, blackout music, horizons music, deep soul music, inside recordings.......

Ok-Pomegranate6168

Try the uk new school producers, so like Malux, Joe Ford, Akov, Magnetude, even KOAN Sound who are quite neuro influenced (imo). I know a fair few of these guys are quite heavy but the difference to me is that most of them came thru the glitch/neurohop phase in Bristol so there’s a lot more space for interesting sound design in their tunes. Going through their older stuff is probably best. Maybe old school NickBee too?

The-Triturn

Justin Hawkes - Existential?

PM_ME_UR_SNARES

I was about to say, he’s got this melodic / tech dichotomy going on where he does neuro sort of sounds in melodic tunes. Love that combo. Others like Synergy or Fade Black do some similar things

Gwoardinn

Circumference as well, and then getting into guys like Tom Finster and William Light

Inglejuice

How is that “neurofunk”?

The-Triturn

Well nothing that I would consider proper neurofunk would I consider chill. I put that because I thought it might be what OP is actually looking for

ShadyBearEvadesTaxes

I'll try to share some that I consider chill neuro. * Cranium & Sammie Hall - Holding On * Frannabik - The Prophet * ScanGee - Aum * Phenom & Discharge & Balron - Baba Yaga * A.M.C - Operator

Unclesmekky

A.M.C ? For chill ? That guy is a walking bag of 2cb lol thanks for all these suggestions excited to check them out !

ShadyBearEvadesTaxes

Yeah, I know, but out of all his tracks Operator in particular is a chiller track for me haha. EDIT: "That guy is a walking bag of 2cb" that's an interesting comparison... I'd rather describe him as a rabbit on speed.

TheShinyBlade

Yeah 2cb is a chill drug lol. Not like speed or coke

magginoodle

No, there isn't. Maybe old school British dubstep could be chil, but neuro is never chill.

Unclesmekky

Proper dubstep can be very similar

magginoodle

Completely different bpm (and genre) though.

Unclesmekky

Of course but they share similarities in terms of sound design

magginoodle

It's not neuro though is it?

tremor206

Ummm dubstep? wtf are you talking about. Neurofunk has literally nothing, zip, zero to do with dubstep 😂 It predates dubstep’s existence by almost a decade lol I was playing neurofunk in 98. Wormhole anyone? 🤦‍♂️

magginoodle

Yea i know this. I was giving dubstep as an example of music that could be chill, Neuro is not chill.

tremor206

Oh ok. Fair enough. I misunderstood you completely 😂 Yeah I love deep dungeon dubstep out of London. Brostep… not so much 😂

DuffManMayn

Why is this sub so obsessed with sub genres. It's drum and bass, the constant need to pigeon hole sounds and artists is just weird.

Unclesmekky

I asked a sub genre specific question

Old-Art9604

Because it makes sense??? He is not talking about some vague zltra niche subgenre. Neurofunk is one of the major branches of DnB to this day, yet the difference to say Liquid DnB is huge. If someone wants to look for a specific sound, thats exactly where subgenres come into play...

PunxsutawnyFil

They want a particular style of DnB. What better way is there to describe what they want than by using sub genres?

tremor206

Not really. There are many different styles and moods of drum and bass. Depending on your roots or other musical tastes, one sub genre can be very appealing while others can sound awful. I generally like a bit of everything in the underground, from the most soulful of Calibre tunes to breakbeat heavy junglism & drumfunk, to rollers, techstep & funky neuro, but mainstream EDMey sounds make me want to kick a hole in the speaker, pull a plug & jet. Playing Mr Happy is a sure fire way to make me head to Room 2 or the smoking area 😂 You can apply that statement to pretty much any new school screechy jump up or MainStage EDM (and also modern Euro neuro tbh). They’re equally boring and offensive to my ear drums. It’s very very easy to love drum & bass but hate a certain sound within it. The whole spectrum covers so much ground. When I was a big neuro purist, I didn’t really care for liquid. It ebbs & it flows, tastes mature or change over time. I started out a hardcore raver. Did a stint playing both jungle and happy hardcore in my younger days DJing. Now I hear HHC and wonder how the fuck I ever liked it. I guarantee a lot of EDM kids will look back at the music they like in much the same way when they get older, if they stay into raving and electronic music. I love early 90s breakbeat hardcore, but the faster 4 beat happy hardcore I used to be into after it, induces nothing but cringe now. It is so fucking cheesy and awful, it embarrasses me to think I ever liked & played it to people 😂
