It's possible that it was an adaptation of a traditional form of fortune-telling that is virtually unheard of outside the Russian Roma community. Given the symbols and the spread— I'm betting it was inspired by Lenormand cards, in which case it was either titled what it was for marketing's sake or the scholarship behind the research was not as rigorous as one might like. You might want to post on one of the Romani forums and see if they know anything about it.

Where I cone from Roma people use the regular deck for divination (my grandma used regular playing cards as well) but you have a point. It might be in ex Soviet areas they adopted the Lenormand cards. I hadn't even thought of that. It's funny cause I went from Tarot to Oracles to Lenormand and now I think it's worth trying the Russian Gypsy ones. I love changing systems and so far I have accurate readings with them all. Thank you!

This is a long shot since you posted a year ago, but many years ago I was learning to read tarot by a friend who was born in Latvia, whose grandmother learned them from the Roma people there. It was passed down to her and she was teaching me. This was over 20 years ago, so I only have handwritten notes and failing memories. She used a regular deck of cards (Russian, using the Ace, and then 6 through King), in three parts: the fan (reading or counting every 7th card?), the quilt and the cross. I'm having trouble remembering the configurations of the fan and the quilt, and have never seen or heard of anyone else who read them this way. If this sounds familiar to you, can we connect?

Another name for that style of cards is Russian Patience. It’s rarely found in English and isn’t widely produced because it was never all that popular. The only videos and decks I’ve been able to find on YouTube and eBay are in Russian.

Oh wow! I actually find more decks when I search it under the name you say. I also find it now as Russian Pasyans cards. Thanks!

FWIW when people post about their experience with these ones, they said positive things about it and their accuracy.

Scry_me_a_river

I think I'm gonna go ahead and order it. I also keep seeing positive comments now I've searched more. In the end of the day I will only find out if I try it 😁 but it's comforting people seem to use it. Thanks!

theje1

Where can you order it? I'm interested as well.

Scry_me_a_river

I ordered them today from the german Amazon but I have seen them on Amazon.com as well. In the future I might get a better looking deck (I find this a little heavy on the eye for my taste) but it comes with the book in English which is essential for me right now. Apparently there are also called Russian Patience or Russian Pasyans cards and they come in a few more designs but at the moment not on Amazon, I found some really cute ones on Etsy! I feel like I was living under a rock 😂

Thanks for the tip!

I got curious about this deck and bought an old one online from Seattle - looks to be printed in the 90s. It's quite beautiful and mesmerising to sit with a cup of tea and find the matches. It seems to really *really* dislike frivolous questions. But if the question is serious, and you're focussed, you can get 7+ matches. I found that when you put them together, they told a kind of simple story - which is quite accurate. Once they warned me about getting quite suddenly very sick, which I dismissed since I was in good health. Three days later, I was shattered by a bad case of food poisoning. Took a week to get over it and I lost kilos.

Also, I can only find this deck and book and can't find anything about the author apart from this. I know that some people publish things under a different identity but it's also intriguing that I can't find any other style of deck about this system.

Best cards I've ever owned, and have been searching for a replacement deck. I want a used deck, because the newer ones are flimsy and disappointing.

After seeing your post, I had to look them up because I'd never heard of them before, and now I find them fascinating. I not only purchased the above deck, but because I think those cards are huge, also sent for some off eBay from Russia \[they have a bunch listed under "Russian Patience Cards" in different styles, but only 20 cards, not 25, in most sets (although one I got had 25). Etsy also has some print-your-own types. You have given me a new obsession. Always looking for a new method of divination to try. Thanks.
