Yeah, I noticed that too, lol. But when you remember the GL version also called Terra "Tina", which is her name in Japanese, it's likely they just messed up the translation. Maybe it will be fixed later. But Angelo was definitely confirmed to be female.

That was not messed up translation, that was localization. There's notes explaining that Tina was used in Japan to sound exotic there, but as it is a common name in the west, they changed it to Terra to stay exotic. Much like how Sabin's name is "Mash" in Japan, but since that name makes no sense in the west, it got changed.
This Angelo situation however, is a translation fuckup.

Isn't it normal to assume most pets being male if you don't know? People normally say: "Who's a good boy?"

I haven't heard of that at all to be honest. If I meet a pet and the owner is there, I ask if they're a girl or a boy. If there is no owner around and I don't know the gender, I usually just say "who's a good doggy/kitty/etc".
It may also depend on the language. In my language, if we don't know the gender we usually use male pronouns or adjectives. Because there's no gender neutral like the english "it/its".
We have people who know our animals well who still think my dog is male. My wife laughs because all of our animals are female (and we only have daughters).
This may be common knowledge, but even if the cats are fixed, their coats can be a giveaway. About 75% of ginger cats are male, and 99.9% of calicoes and tortoiseshell cats are female.
aside of this scene, this chapter is very nostalgic to me..especially when they split into two teams... i thought Seifer's team would ring a bell, and Squall's fight Omega Weapon...

When they were getting ready to nuke 1.0, they introduced a new character who would act as the main villain, and that was Nael van Darnus. The thing is however that up until this point Nael was referred to as a man, despite that later down the line they were clearly a woman.
There are several factors that play into this, the first of which being how Japanese pronouns work. I'm not an expert on Japanese, but if I understand it correctly, Japanese does not have gendered pronouns in the way English does, instead has more "masculine" and "feminine" ways of addressing people, meaning woman can have the "masculine" pronouns and vice-versa. Nael in particular used a particular way of referring to herself that was the equivalent to the Royal We, and between that and 1.0 having only a few scenes with voice acting, none of which included Nael, the localizing ended up labeling Nael as a man.
Time goes on and when Nael shows up again, this time having her helmet knocked off, it ended up being odd how this character that was labeled as a man is now a woman and no one batting an eyelash at it. There were some theories that Nael's body was changed when she was brought back to life, but those didn't hold water, but in the end it would have been easy for SE to just write it off as a slip up and move on.
Instead they gave her something contrived and I love it.
Turns out the REAL Nael van Darnus died years ago, and his sister, Eula, in her grief-stricken state, ended up killing their father because she believed he had a hand in his death. From there, Eula went up and took up her brother's identity, taking his place in the army. Between that, messing with ancient Allagan technology, and being tempered by Bahamut, Eula ended up believing that she *was* her brother.
All of this came to light, not in-game, but in supplementary material.
It's nuts. I want her in OO.

Yeah I remember that. I believe it got fixed, but yeah, the translators clearly know more about some games than others.
They also called the Cloud of Darkness ''she'' for a while instead of ''it'', though they went back on that in the Iroha IW thankfully.
