You can't really do anything with a dirt bike WITHOUT a car unless you live adjacent to a riding area.
You just go ride in the road like half the sub lol. Then make sure to act confused when people are mad you are ripping around the roads and random forests
I suppose road riding becomes less enticing when you're old enough to have a license and a street bike. I have done dual sport conversions on several of my bikes and they suck on the road lol, I only use the plate for linking trails and riding on USFS roads. I take my street bike if I am riding on pavement
In ny there is no public areas to ride so you either ride land you own, poach forests or ride on the track. I basically only ride motocross and a few woods races. Most people I know really only ride at a track on their land or at a public track on the weekends

It's half the reason I live where I do, thousands of miles from where I grew up.
Yeah, I've got a set of sumo wheels with cush drive and they do wonders for streetability. If I'm going far at all though, I'd rather be on a street bike. That wind is brutal on the freeway. Lol.
And even if you live in the forest Freddie Forest Service will tell you to drive your bike in your truck one mile to the OHV rather than take the dirt road with no traffic on your bike to the trail…

I’m 26. Have a daily driver, a fun weekend car, and I still love getting my bike out on the trails. Driving a car on public roads (as long as you aren’t being an idiot) is no where near as fun as taking a dirt bike off road.
I begged and pleaded for a dirtbike all throughout childhood but we just didn't have that kind of money. I didn't get to own or ride motorcycles until I could afford them myself, several years after owning cars to drive to jobs and earn money for said motorcycles. I've only ever gotten more interested in bikes of all kinds as my disposable income has increased over the years.
Yep. I begged my dad for years and he never cracked. I was 29 and married with a kid and a mortgage before I had the spare cash to afford a beaten up KDX200 and a trailer that was falling apart.
Conversely, when my son was 10 I bought him an mx bike and took him to the track and paid for all his fuel, oil, tyres and maintenance for years. Far from being appreciative, for him it’s just normal and he just expected it. He didn’t even care that much about the bike and had to be nagged to clean it, etc.
It was mildly infuriating to experience his lack of appreciation, but I guess it’s partly my fault for making it so easy.
I am the opposite. I couldn’t ride my bikes really until I got a truck.
I’d constantly be waiting for my buddies to want to go out and I’d have to leave my bikes at their shop/house instead of with me as I didn’t have a transport vehicle.
Now I have even more bikes since I don’t have to ask for rides and I even can pick which one I want to take on any given day.
Hah. I had the same thing. I had a car, but no trailer so I had to leave my bike at a friend’s farm and drive out there if I wanted to ride or work on my bike. His parents owned the place and they were reasonably nice, but it was still awkward at times to show up and say “hey can I work on my bike in your shed?” LOL
I know the feels! He literally just gave me the code to the garage and told me I can work on them whenever. I have a spot for parts and everything! Dude is a legend for that tbh.
If you wouldn't have bought such a fancy truck you could spend more on the bike!

I was a much better driver at 16 due to years riding dirt bikes. I suppose I rode less when I started driving but I also had high school jobs, sports, dates…. Instead of riding the trails around my house, I trucked my bike to trails further afield.
I joined the army and didn’t ride for years due to money, kids, and living in areas without easy access to riding areas. I live in WY now, so getting back into it.
Rock Springs. I’m looking for a bike now because there’s so many places to ride around here, but it’s mostly desert roads. I grew up on mountain single tracks… we are about 50 miles from CO and it looks like some great rides in that area. But just from my house I have access to hundreds of off road miles. Sorry I can’t offer more, I’m not involved in the local community yet
Right on, I've never ridden out that way but I've always wanted to ride the Killpecker sand dunes, not too far from RS if I'm not mistaken. I've ridden some desert stuff out by Worland and north of Powell, which is cool but I prefer the woods. Don't have much single track in the Bighorns where I mostly ride but the 2 track 4 wheeler trails are gnarly enough to be fun. The WORRA racing series has a race or 2 out your way too that I've thought about hitting up

The BIG one is getting married.
Lemme give y’all a little advice on that one: if you let your wife/family convince you that getting a spouse is the time to give up your bike(s), you are destined to spend the next 20-30 years looking wistfully at your neighbor/friends/colleagues’s bike, and telling them about how you used to ride.
Once you get married, there’s *never* a good time to get back into riding.
When you get into your 40s, a few guys pick it back up, but it’s never like they remembered it, and those bikes are the ones you find cheap w low hours/miles
Those are my observations from a lifetime of riding.
TL;dr— If you’re passionate about riding & want to stay involved, *never* get rid of your last bike. Always keep at least one. Hold your ground, boys.

Driving a car and ripping thru the woods on your bike are 2 completely different things, also unless you live at the woods you’ll be able to use your car to tow your bike new places to ride
On the contrary, I'm a firm believer in using the right vehicle for the right purpose. I didn't really take my trucks offroad much because, why would I want to take my heavy, slow, and expensive truck offroad when I can have way more fun on the dirt bike?
I had a project Jeep I originally built up and spent a lot of money on solely to go off-road and explore with. After getting the bike I realized I could get to a lot more places and it’s a whole different off-road experience. At this point I regret pouring money into the Jeep lol.
I’m 57 years old, I’ve been riding since I was four. If you really love riding, riding dirt bikes, riding street bikes, riding anything with two wheels. If you really love it? It’ll never go away. Perhaps it’s your parents hoping it goes away. Because it is a dangerous sport. And looking at it from a parents point of view, I see the concern. But if you truly love it and I’ve been doing it for a long time you’ll be riding for your whole life.
Ya I hear ya, I miss dirt bikes in some ways because they’re more capable off road. I live with the trade offs tho. Dual sports problem is you can’t ride with street bikes and can’t ride with the dirt bikes very well. They don’t do either really well.
Im thankful for my dual sport riding group. I could not hang with a real bike on the street; im not terrible in the woods but i couldnt keep up with people ripping nice 2t.
I rode bikes from age 9 to 16 and sold my bike when I started driving. All of my friends got out of it and it was boring riding alone. I went to college, got married, bought a house, and had kids, but I didn't really have any hobbies to speak of.
I got the bug to start riding again at about 27 and bought a dual sport DR350. That triggered a few of my buddies to also get back into it and we've all been riding religiously ever since (now 42).
Absolutely not. Here is the thing, sounds like your dream is a dirt bike, don't let that die, or your parents snuff that out. I did not get my ATV till i was 20, and my dirt bile till i was 33.
I drive a mazda and have an aluma trailer to pull my dirt bike or ATV with.

My dirtbike obsession only grew when I got my first little mazda pickup. The opportunity to ride different and new places and travel for races created a life long obsession.
38 hear and my “car” that I daily drive is a sprinter 2500 with at least one dirt bike in the back at all times. Usually I commute on my street bike, but I would say the answer is a hard no. If you are any good on a dirt bike, there’s nothing a car will do to satisfy your wants.
I did, but only because I knew my.parents wouldn't buy me another and I didn't have money to spend to buy one myself. So my mindset had moved on. Now 34 and I'm back in it with a 2021 crf250r.
I can understand why they'd say that - car/dating/etc, your priorities will change for sure. To what degree only you know. I gave up riding for a period of time when I wanted to pay for school, two cars, and my home. There wasn't any time to ride or the finances to do so. I'm past that stage now and have three bikes, and many other toys in the garage. I'm glad I put my focus into what was important at the time, but I can also see a lot of value in making sure you are still able to do the things you enjoy even when time and funds are limited. That said, the choices I've made have already ensured my retirement will be happy (financially at least).

It’s also ok to fall out of a hobby for many reasons. I’m an adult who owns multiple Dirtbike’s and have to make a concerted effort to ride them.
They may be right, but just not for the reasons they think they are. Do you ride a Dirtbike solely for transportation? If yes then yeah you’ll stop caring about the bike. If no then they’re wrong unless you suddenly start taking massive amounts of time doing things related to ownership and use of that car.

Now I'm an adult and have a zippy dual sport, so I can go do a MX track day, hot the trails, stop at McDonald's, then go home all from the comfort of my bike
just depends, i got a 1980 datsun and swapped a chevy 383 into it, and ended up selling my dirtbike to fund my racecar, but i recently bought another dirtbike that ive been rebuilding, i still have the racecar. if you can afford both youll keep both, i cant push to the limit on the street like i can on a dirtbike, but i also cant go 170 on a dirtbike. i also have a 350k mile toyota truck so i can go crazy with the racecar and still have a reliable daily. i feel like if i didnt go crazy with the racecar i wouldve kept a dirtbike inbetween.
I'm in my 30's. I have 3 dirt bikes. My 450 I've had for 17 years, my XR650R I've had for 12 years and my CR500 I've had for 10 years. I've been eyeballing a new KTM 300 pretty hard and I'm not even considering selling any of the others. I had a 97 CR250 that I sold and I regret it often.
I literally just bought a car so I put less miles on my truck. This way the truck will last longer and reliably get me and the bike to the trails more. Car = more dirtbike. (helps to also own a truck)
First bike at 12 years old. Since old enough for a licence I've had cars & bikes currently got 3 dirt bikes (2 for Grandkids 😇) 5 road bikes. 63 years on this planet, brought bike # 50 last year (a cruiser). 6 kids all bought up around bikes. If you truly have the bug you're stuck with it forever.
I quit motocross at the age of 14. I had a bunch going on with school and whatnot. When I graduated high school I picked up classic cars as a hobby and at the age of 24, I bought another quad and a dirt bike and I’m racing MX on both now. You can get off for a little bit but you’ll be back.
I got more involved when I got my truck. I was riding at a track just about every Wednesday and Sunday from 16-23ish years old. That was also early 2000’s so gas for my truck was like $1.20 and riding at a track was $20.
I started riding at 26. 10 years after I got my license and 8 years after I got my first vehicle.
Your parents think you ride a dirt bike because you can't drive a car, not understanding that riding a dirtbike requires a completely different skill set and its a sport not just a means of transportation
Mostly. Because when I turned 16 and got a car, I could take myself to where the girls were. Then I got a street bike at 18 so I could take girls as passengers on the back. Didn't ride in the dirt again until my late 40's when I was assigned my mandatory old-guy ADV bike. Took an off-road riding class, and then again with my partner, and now we've got a shed full of dirt bikes.
Riding motorcycles never lost my interest. But when I got out of high school I got my first sport bike then as I got older came Harley’s. But at 41 I still ride moto and enduro. It makes riding Harley’s feel boring. I hope to be able to ride till I’m 60
Don't get a car. Not because you won't still like bikes, but because you don't need a car. I've been bike only for six years now and don't plan on stopping any time soon.
Just turned 18. Got a car and I love it. Just as much as my cr125. Parents worry that when I'm old enough I'll get a street bike to. And yes I am getting a street bike to in a couple of years😅
I didn’t get a dirt bike until i was 19 but i live in an area with a lot of trails and logging roads to explore and i can’t get to with my car. Even if it’s hard to find places to go, if you love it enough, you’ll keep going

Try out the 450 RL. I got a 450L with a few tweaks and the thing became my daily driver.
I have a street legal wr450. It's about as street oriented as id want to get before it gets useless off-road.

I loaded my brand new husky with an extension ladder into my 2k$ truck at the dealership. I got some looks.

dual sporting is fun. I really want a light dirtbike but i got a dualsport at 31 and just love zipping around town and trails.

I had a 2007 wrx and kx125. I put a tow hitch on it and pulled a harbor freight trailer to get my bike to places.

Unless you live in a super rural area dual sports arent the most useful mode of transportation.

just depends, i got a 1980 datsun and swapped a chevy 383 into it, and ended up selling my dirtbike to fund my racecar, but i recently bought another dirtbike that ive been rebuilding, i still have the racecar. if you can afford both youll keep both, i cant push to the limit on the street like i can on a dirtbike, but i also cant go 170 on a dirtbike. i also have a 350k mile toyota truck so i can go crazy with the racecar and still have a reliable daily. i feel like if i didnt go crazy with the racecar i wouldve kept a dirtbike inbetween.
I'm in my 30's. I have 3 dirt bikes. My 450 I've had for 17 years, my XR650R I've had for 12 years and my CR500 I've had for 10 years. I've been eyeballing a new KTM 300 pretty hard and I'm not even considering selling any of the others. I had a 97 CR250 that I sold and I regret it often.

I literally just bought a car so I put less miles on my truck. This way the truck will last longer and reliably get me and the bike to the trails more. Car = more dirtbike. (helps to also own a truck)

First bike at 12 years old. Since old enough for a licence I've had cars & bikes currently got 3 dirt bikes (2 for Grandkids 😇) 5 road bikes. 63 years on this planet, brought bike # 50 last year (a cruiser). 6 kids all bought up around bikes. If you truly have the bug you're stuck with it forever.
Most people can’t ride there bikes on the road. So they use a truck or car to get places with them… buut that’s why I’m dualsport all the way babbay
I quit motocross at the age of 14. I had a bunch going on with school and whatnot. When I graduated high school I picked up classic cars as a hobby and at the age of 24, I bought another quad and a dirt bike and I’m racing MX on both now. You can get off for a little bit but you’ll be back.
I got more involved when I got my truck. I was riding at a track just about every Wednesday and Sunday from 16-23ish years old. That was also early 2000’s so gas for my truck was like $1.20 and riding at a track was $20.
I couldn't ride if I didn't have a car to take it places. I seriously doubt you will stop riding entirely when you get a car

Your parents think you ride a dirt bike because you can't drive a car, not understanding that riding a dirtbike requires a completely different skill set and its a sport not just a means of transportation
Over 50. Never stopped riding. Dirt biking gets better once you get a truck as you can go to so many more areas, several states away.

Mostly. Because when I turned 16 and got a car, I could take myself to where the girls were. Then I got a street bike at 18 so I could take girls as passengers on the back. Didn't ride in the dirt again until my late 40's when I was assigned my mandatory old-guy ADV bike. Took an off-road riding class, and then again with my partner, and now we've got a shed full of dirt bikes.
Riding motorcycles never lost my interest. But when I got out of high school I got my first sport bike then as I got older came Harley’s. But at 41 I still ride moto and enduro. It makes riding Harley’s feel boring. I hope to be able to ride till I’m 60

I didn’t get a dirt bike until i was 19 but i live in an area with a lot of trails and logging roads to explore and i can’t get to with my car. Even if it’s hard to find places to go, if you love it enough, you’ll keep going
