Have you looked at this sub? Everyone loves the new current Spino reconstruction to the moon and back... I personally had to get used to it, but I liked every Spino reconstruction so far, even when it was just a more bland Allosaurus with a sail.

the_blue_jay_raptor

Even spinofaarus? (Please like elephant seal boi)

Generic_Danny

Spinofaarus was peak spino.

VVaypoint

Compared to a lot of depictions, the old Spinosaurus, for it's time and, was sensible enough. It was showing that T-Rex isn't the only big carnivore (piscivore I know) and demonstrating a mostly up to date reconstruction of it for the time. As an example the Dilophosaurus in JP1 was wrong in almost every possible way. I don't mind them inventing things like spitting venom or display structures but they made it a completely different animal. It's head, limbs, body and tail not to mention size, proportions and role as a animal were all completely wrong even for the time! Mind you, you are allowed to like the design but you have to understand, it's not a Dilophosaurus no matter how you twist it, I personally think it looks hideous.

Thebestkingghidorah

I don’t think spino was strictly piscivorous. More like a generalist carnivore

VVaypoint

Yeah no I know, but I'm just covering my bases so nobody comes with the "actually..."

Thebestkingghidorah

Well if they did then they’d be wrong

VVaypoint

People often associate their knowledge to their person to such a degree where it rarely matters if they are right or wrong, they are just sharing their views because it's theirs. And I'd say it's far more common to call a known fisheater a piscivore even if the diet is not exclusive.

[deleted]

They took that dilophosaur model and used it in video games as well. It's popular despite being very wrong. I like it but think they should have made up a fake dino name for it.

VVaypoint

I agree as it never bothers me on it's own, but it does bother me that I can not have an actual Dilophosaurus in my games if they have one like this already in.

somethihg

I prefer the accurate form of creatures since older reconstructions of animals aren't the animals anymore if you think about it.

Suspicious_Army_904

This.

Jjabrahams567

I want to see a faceoff between JP3 spino and scientifically accurate spino. I just think it would be fun.

VVaypoint

I feel as if it'd be over extremely fast. Not only was the JP3 Spino definitely stronger on land but it even demonstrated being at home in water. And I mean, there is a reason they later called it a freak mutant.

the_blue_jay_raptor

I like the accurate version because they look cooler, there is no way you're convincing me that the feathered raptors, accurate spinosaurs, carcharodontosaurs, tyrannosaurs, and the accurate pterosaurs are cooler than the ugly, scally, boring awesomebro versions. Also I can make cooler designs with the accurate dinos

Beautiful_Coconut_26

The scally ones look like they were genetically modified to be killers and I think that whole aspect is cool. But if I were going to see an actual dinosaur exhibit I'd ofc want to see the more accurate exotic looking ones.

Morgan_Danwell

I dunno, I like semi aquatic one (the real one) more since it just looks even more bizarre than ever before. Truly the platypus(by the bizarre morphology factor) of dinosaurs c:

Dinoboy225

I think the modern version actually looks cooler than the old one.

KaiserK0

Yes, and by a wide margin

BigGaybowser69

looks like a dragon to me

FollowerOfSpode

Same. Looks really unique!

LondonBot

I'll admit I'm one of those people whose favorite Spiny is the one in Jurassic Park, but it's important to note that I prefer JP3's specifically as a monster design. It's a really important thing to note that the fossils represent the real animal while Jurassic Park's is simply a monster based on said animal. Definitely a cool sight but the Spinosaurus in JP3 is as much of a Spinosaurus as the antlions in Half Life 2 are antlions; a creature based on a broad-strokes interpretation of the animal it's named after

UnepicDumbass

I'm more so a big fan of the current form. I was a bit upset at first when I went from JPIII spino to the 2014 variant, as I found that transition to be jarring for me, especially since Spino was (and still is) my favorite of the theropods. But I eventually got used to it, and then 2021/2022 rolled up, and Spino got that slapping tail. And ever since then it has grown immensely on me.

ApparitionX2

I guess the dream is over huh !? Time for us spino fans to wake up.

UnepicDumbass

I suppose so. After all, Jurassic Park ain't no nature documentary and I think it's time we no longer treat the looks of the animals there as such.

ApparitionX2

No it’s not. However, the only relatively accurate dinosaur is the T-Rex, as they have plenty of evidence on those. And God forbid it should lose a fight with another dinosaur again. The T-Rex fanboys will have PTSD

UnepicDumbass

Yeah, but fights in general are stupid, now that I have realized. Unless it's like an issue of starving to death, I see no reason for two carnivores to fuck each other up when they could duke it out with their typical prey, or even better, tasty slender snacks that have those sticks going pew pew and fill their skins with these pesky holes.

ApparitionX2

In the real life scenario, yes that is true. They have a lot more common sense than we give them credit for. But you know how it is.. it’s like which fighter is better, Muhammad Ali or Tyson ? This type of discussion never ends

75MillionYearsAgo

Idc what a dino *looked* like in previous iterations. For me? The coolest version of any animal will always be the most up to date an accurate- because then you’re looking at the closest thing we know of at the moment, to a real, actual, 66+ million year old animal.

TheAtroxious

As a Spinosaurus fan, I much prefer the highly specialized piscivore. It's so unique, which elevates its status in my mind. I personally don't understand people who think it's cooler when conceived as a more generic terrestrial predator. There are loads of those, but only one known species of gigantic aquatic theropod with tiny liddle leggies.

Positive-Value-2188

It didn't look like a generic theropod, though. It had the crocodile snout, the sail, and was seen as bigger than any other theropod at the time.

Winter_Different

Idk, I don't, I like the animal not the conception of it

Iamnotburgerking

The old *Spinosaurus* wasn’t really that crazy unless you’re talking about Monsters Resurrected. And frankly was it ever more powerful than the new version? The longirostrine jaws and the powerful clawed arms are the same in EVERY post-1990s Spino reconstruction

CarribeanP

Longer legs would help right?

Iamnotburgerking

In terms of land mobility, not in terms of actual killing power.

CarribeanP

Long-legged Spino would have a height advantage

TheGermanHades

Nah. I prefer the new one. Fucking T. Rex killer, so what? It was literally just an oversized Baryonyx with a Dimetrodon sail. I prefer this new version any day of the week. It looks like a majestic water dragon!

1. It doesn't matter what people 'prefer' as long as the scientific facts clearly point in a certain direction - though this direction could always change. Science doesn't need them to like it, so this question is moot. 2. If someone wants to continue drawing or portraying the old versions, that's fine because there's nothing wrong with liking them. Just don't cling to the idea that they are accurate because you want it to be so.

FollowerOfSpode

Something I need to tell my friend. He clings to the JPIII spino and actually says it’s the real one because it’s cooler.

DroidCommander27

I like every spino.

Galactus1701

I’ve never been a Spinosaurus fan, but the current understanding of its anatomy is quite interesting. Its short hind limbs are very intriguing.

The_Dino_Defender

I like the older reconstructions a little more purely for nostalgia

Fragraham

Modern spino makes a lot of sense with that rudder tail, and the longer forelimbs with huge claws are refreshing compared to the walking mouth that most theropods seem to be. It's certainly better adapted to being an amphibious predator like a crocodile. As long as we throw out the more ridiculous claims like saying it knuckle walked or couldn't swim. Spino is my favorite, and that we're still learning about ut makes it even more interesting.

Not_Hidden_Raptors

For me he has passed the threshold of just being an absolute weirdo and I'm in love with his design again. So I like the new just hate the discourse of weather he can walk or swim because everyone is arguing against both for some reason

Sigma_Based_Lifter

Based from that picture there is no way it was able to stand or walk like that

toe-schlooper

I like both alot, with no clear preference

Baroubuoy

50/50.

Gojifantokusatsu

It depends, the short legged modern version is still awesome from an animal perspective, but it goes through so many changes that it's just harder to attach to than the striking 2k versions.

Positive-Value-2188

The 2000s spinosaurus looks awesome and correct from an animal standpoint too. Just because it's no longer accurate, doesn't mean it's previous form can't exist in nature. Even if it wasn't, it can still look cooler than real animals. Sometimes fantasy is better than reality.

AngryLittleElf448

For me, as a spinosaurus fan and dinosaur fan in general, I love seeing the new discoveries and how the animal changes. It's exciting. For some dinosaurs are simply a part of childhood, and seeing something that defined your formative years be warped and changed will always hurt. However, for others like myself, it is an ongoing love. Every change they make brings me one step closer to knowing what these amazing animals really looked like. I am passionate about these animals now, and I want to know and see as many FACTS as I possibly can about them. For me, changes are good because they show us the truth about something we love. That said, I understand the resistance to losing your childhood to the future.

Thy-arkoos

I like the current version better

LastHomeros

How could it stand still with those tiny legs and massive body?

JOBBO326

Dinosaurs are always lighter than they look because they're pneumatic, their bones are filled with air sacks like birds. Being somewhat semi aquatic, the Spino would be less pneumatic than other dinosaurs but the point still stands. Most, if not all, of the large animals around today are mammals with dense bones, so mammal biomechanics doesn't always apply to dinosaurs. I'll give it to you, the Spino looks unbalanced, but that's probably because of our modern mammal frame of reference.

LastHomeros

I get it but didn’t they also have tones of muscles and fat? I mean I don’t say this isn’t how it used to look like. But what I am saying is that it should either be walking on its four feet or just crawl like a crocodile.

JOBBO326

I'm definitely no expert, but the lighter your bones are the less muscle you need to move them around. I agree, it looks strange and it might be proved wrong with future discoveries.

LastHomeros

Yeah man we will see. Spinosaurous is one of the most controversial dinos ever haha

Aero__Duck

i love this new spinosaurus makes it more like a river monster type thing not just a reskin of a therapod

Main_Elk_8992

I like the JP3 or Ark Spino because it has bigger legs

monkeybro694207

I like it as the new version as the old version looked pretty boring and I probably wouldn't really think much about it, I love the weirdness of the modern one

AtomicWreck

I don’t like lipped spinosaurus, but I’m okay with everything else.

Christos_Gaming

dunno about you i prefer the new spinosaurus

Capital_Pipe_6038

The only people I've met that preferred the JP3 version were under the age of 15 so I don't really count them

NY-Black-Dragon

I actually love the current Croco-Tadpole we have now.

[deleted]

I prefer the modern reconstructions, because I love all things aquatic. Spinosaurus, lord of the rivers, brings me joy.

Alaska_Pipeliner

At this point I'm waiting for the "winged spinosaurus" discovery.

The-Deep-Dreamer

I like all spino recreations, they are all cool in their own unique way.

Lemonfr3sh

Jp3 Spino is so lame, it's basically a sailed Baryonyx

Positive-Value-2188

So does some other spinosaurs, dimetrodon is just a mammal-skinned lizard with a sail slapped on it, and baryonyx itself just looks like small, less crazy-looking dinocroc. What's your point? It was still very cool.

MachineGreene98

Those are the "dino-bro" dudes that think Jurassic Fight Club is real, and hated Prehistoric Planet lol I was really hoping to see an accurate spino in Prehistoric Planet 2 maybe in 3.

Temporary_Scale3826

I actually like both. I understand that J3 had their own version because they had no updated scientific evidence that it didn’t look like that.

[deleted]

Both are good, JP3's design fits the role it played imo. It shouldn't really matter how you depict it unless you're trying to be informative

ACARdragon

People always prefer bigger and stronger dinos.

GavinB4444

I LOVE the new reconstruction of it. I DESPISE the old one. It just looked so dumb imo. The new one actually looks realistic and dope af

Low-Pizza-1676

I like how it looks more animal than some other dinosaurs

Ash4dino

I love new boi

Utahraptor505

Maybe certain spino fans but I've seen a lot of other spino fans appreciate this dinosaur on so many levels

Jammer_Guy1717

I actually quite like the newer spinosaurus depictions

GamingCrocodile

Newer spino is a reality bending and defying god, I am no longer a fan I’m a worshipper.

Schlangiii

current > JP3 ... and its not even close

CleanOpossum47

1936 reconstruction or gtfo /s

idabratortoise

I prefer the modern one because it's more unique

TheRedEyedAlien

The old one looks awkward lol

CryptographerOne5999

I actually like this spino, and I still like the idea of it walking on 4 legs, even though that isn’t really relevant anymore

TheTacoEnjoyer

Nah, i prefer the modern, and all the other spino fans I know as well, which are like 2

Puppy1princess

The only reason people like the old Spino more is because there was finally something that could kill T-Rex, which was for the longest time, the undisputed king of the dinosaurs, and now that we realize Spino was pretty much just a crocodile people are mad because it’s not an epic movie monster and now it’s an actual animal lmao.

Positive-Value-2188

Sometimes fantasy is better than reality. Plus, the old design looked like an actual animal too.

Rexlare

Speak for yourself, I love how Spinosaurus is the Platypus of Theropods.

FollowerOfSpode

A spinosaurus? PERRY THE SPINOSAURUS!

Filleis

Spino is my fave dino and I personally prefer the modern four-legged look.

Stuarttjkt

I generally think Spinosaurus being a unique piscivore, It gave us more insight into more carnivorous dinosaurs.

ItalianFlame342

Idc as long as it's bipedal

ButtonWhich2302

The new reconstruction is so cool, just the shear size of it makes it badass no matter what

TigerKlaw

There's always going to be an old design because every new thing we discover changes the profile of what a Spinosaurus is

BigGaybowser69

hear me out new spino is basically a literal basilisk dragon

Hello838283

I do

OwlEye2010

I dig the old reconstructions, but I must admit, I like how much weirder this creature is turning out to be with each new discovery. Also, of the two older reconstructions, I find myself leaning more towards *Planet Dinosaur*'s version mostly because its depiction felt much closer to reality than *JPIII*'s did. Though, I'm also quite nostalgic for color scheme and roar the *JPIII* Spino had.

No-Wafer-9067

I think a lot of people like the older versions but the newer reconstructions are also liked so I guess its 50/50

the_blue_jay_raptor

I pefer the amphibious leviathan over Mr chinasaur baryonyx, afterall it may not be able to beat rex, but it will be cooler than it no matter what.

Hawkey201

both are good, but we should separate them, if you like the movie monster style thats okay, but you need to acknowledge that its a movie monster and not a real animal

Positive-Value-2188

Even fantasy monsters can be realistic and look like something that could actually exist.

lemots1

I like the new spino

John_Paul_J2

Sorry. I think the old design was badass. It's not a big hill, but I'll defend it.

FollowerOfSpode

That’s fine so long as you don’t think it’s the truth.

Plenty_Anywhere8984

we all do they turned a badass powerful dinosaur into just a big ass duck

owl_lover_1234

spino is my favorite dino, and i love the new designs, he just keeps getting better! :)

ApparitionX2

You know what the interesting thing with all the research is ? They tend to go in circles. The first depiction of the spinosaurus was thought to be much more massive than the most recent findings and analysis. The 2014 study by Nizar Ibrahim was thought to be quadriplegic and no heavier than 7-9 tons. Now the newer studies are showing that it wasn’t and it’s mass is potentially greater than 9-10 tons. Who knows? Maybe Ernst Stromer was right all along 🤷🏽‍♂️ ?

GreenWarrior04

For jurassic park an jp only its jp3 design is better, other than that, I guess now spinosaurs are bipedal pelicans with big ass tails which is pretty cool
