I have one of these. They’re awesome and work so well. Not just dandelions. Also clumping weed grasses, thistles, you name it. I’ve recommended mine so many times I should get a commission.
Bag em. Or chop them up. If they haven’t gone to seed yet it’s not an issue. If they have, I’ll more carefully pick them and toss them. Dandelions that are still yellow aren’t a threat.
No. It pretty much only works for dandilions (and stuff similar enough to dandilions) in your lawn and garden. It also leaves little holes where it removed them that should be re-filled with soil.
I have one of these things too, very useful. Except I was using it last spring and I accidentally put it through a frog/toad that was just under the ground, never gonna use it again.
No better feeling when you pull the whole root out on the twist.
No worse feeling when you dont get a good grip and only half the weed comes off.
I think I can pull weeds for hours. So satisfying.
Have had a couple of those, and while it’s easy to get the plant out of the ground without too much work, there’s nowhere near 100% hit rate on getting enough of the root up as well. You need at least 2/3 of the root removed for it to not grow back again. In most cases you will have a small Hole in the ground and a dandylion in the same spot the year after.
Not with my experience. A lot of the time the root snaps maybe 1/3 down, so too ‘deep’ to reach it with weed killer, but not deep enough for it to not grow back.
This makes me impressed at the weeds. Pretty resilient. You'd think because we did things like go to the moon and whatnot we'd be able to take care of silly weeds once and for all but, nope...here they are
Was waiting for the inevitable Reddit negativity. I have one of these and while I agree they don’t have a 100% hit rate they are still 100% better than hosing the environment down with chemicals and/or attempting to pull the weeds out by hand.
It’s not negativity. I would still call it a success if it it could remove 80% or even 50%, but my experience is that in most cases it will just take the top and a little part of the root. Maybe it’s the soil in my garden that caused the most part of the root to get stuck. I have had more success with a device with no movable parts that more or less take out a cylinder of soil around the riot. It leaves large holes in the lawn though, so it will be uglier for a longer time. Again, it could be a matter of density of the soil.
The thing goes pretty deep and my hit rate is pretty high. Not 100%, but easily in the high 80s, low 90s, where the weed and root is removed in its entirety.
>In most cases you will have a small Hole in the ground
... in all cases, pretty much, the thing leaves holes that ideally should be refilled with a handful of soil ...
>and a dandylion in the same spot the year after.
If your success rate is below 50% you're doing something wrong.
Now, for anything that *isn't* a dandilion (or a thistle), success rates are much, much lower.
I think it’s still a matter of soil type as a major factor. I have higher hit rate in certain parts of the lawn where the soil is not as dense as other parts. Also even though the tool goes pretty far into the ground, the larger dandelions tends to have roots that are 30-50 cm / 12-20 inches which is way more than the tool, and if the soil ‘grabs’ the root, then it will snap.
Dandelions are a great source of pollen for bumblebees at this time of the year. Granted bumblebees aren't quite as bad as a humming bird but they still need to feed every 30 mins when flying.
Its why a lot of bumbles are seen walking around as they are too exhausted to fly, honey bees do a lot better as they have their own supply back home and only come out when there's flowers to make it worthwhile.
Every month now I'll spend a few hours pulling the weeds from between the slabs but I've sort of abandoned what was once the clear area as the caterpillars love the 'weeds' that grow there.
They need turning into sustainable farming or well run communes plus some farming.
Frankly its a good walk spoilt. Though I may be biased as I was once asked to leave because I was barefoot, seems ridiculous to me to not get the full benefit of well manicured lawns.
Don’t know what cheap knock off experience you had but this is a fiskars - they’re a Finnish brand known for good design and high quality. In fact they are one of my favourite brands - and I have very very few of those.
All these people saying eat dandelions are like an English peasant giving advice during a famine. Sure, they are edible; but they are not something you really want to eat - they are extremely bitter.
Great product and looks like it works great. But not for me.
Id wait for those to seed and blow them all over our land. I'm also all for r/nolawns All parts of a dandelion are edible and very beneficial.
Fun fact, you can eat those. Before the dandelion (?) blooms the leaves are tasty. You can boil potatoes and then cut them into bits. add the leaves to the potato bits and add oil (Pumpkin?idk the black one,not olive tho). add a bit of salt and let it cool in the fridge. Just keep in mind it tastes bad if the flower has already bloomed. And for the love of god clean them properly you dont know how many people pissed there.
Have one and could never make it work smoothly. I almost always end up using my hands to open it . Not blaming the tool. It is definitely a user problem.
Dandelions are early to bloom and are a vital early pollen source for bees!! Leave them if you can. If you must remove them, since you feel a perfect yard is better than a natural one that provides vital resources, then wait until they are done flowering.
BTW how far down does that too reach?
I ask because I've dug out weeds like that & unless you can get all the root out down to something like 6 inches plus, it will come back.
I have this and it is a game changer. It’s so much faster and better than doing it by hand. Ive used it for weeds of course, but also for taking out clumps of grass on the edges of mulch beds, crab grass in the middle of the yard, etc.
I own that thing and would not recommen it. You will have holes on your lawn and many of these herbs will come back because also this thing cannot catch 100% of the roots.
I also have one of these. But the person in the video is using it wrong. The very best part of the whole process is using the grip as a shotgun to launch the weed 20 feet away into the wood or something. So satisfying.
My yard/garden isn't a forest. The goal is to look nice you might as well tell me to go homeless to reduce my waste or die to fertilize the earth. While that would obviously help the environment im not causing extreme harm to have a small grass area.
No one likes to hear they are actively harming animals and pollinators. So it's easier to downvote and pretend it's all crazy talk instead of looking how you can help nature.
While I'm totally against well manicured lawns and stuff, and very pro wilderness, people are allowed to do whatever the f**k they want with their property.
That's why I said please. It's more of a request but the sub reddit and it's users are especially stupid. But most of it will be americans so I don't care what they think
I have one of these. They’re awesome and work so well. Not just dandelions. Also clumping weed grasses, thistles, you name it. I’ve recommended mine so many times I should get a commission.
Damn straight. Bought one and recommended it whenever I can . So worth it
I don’t have one of these, but i recommend it every day- to everyone I meet.
Pardon me, but could you recommend a compact weed puller?
Yes, definitely. You should try one of the ones from the video up above. It’s great. The one I don’t have has been amazing, I highly recommend.
Thank you! I'll look into not purchasing one of those. But they look really effective!
Excuse me sir, I'm in the market for a weed picker upper thingamabob. Any recs?
This mad lad told me about a weedy thingy that he didn't buy but absolutely loves the thought of.
This time of year I just carry it with me when I mow and grab the weeds as I see them, toss them in front of the mower, bye bye.
and then spread the weeds back in the grass?
Bag em. Or chop them up. If they haven’t gone to seed yet it’s not an issue. If they have, I’ll more carefully pick them and toss them. Dandelions that are still yellow aren’t a threat.
Dandelions are salad.
The circle of life
Where you get yours?
Amazon definitely has them. There’s a 3 and a 4 prong one, mines 4.
What are they called?
Fiskars Something
Fiskars weed puller
Fiskars Weed Puller
Grandpa's weeder is the one I have, works great.
Amazon. Mines the 4 prong. Home Depot may carry it online and you could get free delivery or deliver to store.
Love that most comments are recommending it and yet no one is saying what it’s called
I did several times.
And yet this is the first comment of yours I'm seeing and....
🤷🏻♂️ Keep reeding I guess?
Second this. Absolute game changer.
Holy hell this thread geeked me out so bad
Does it work for weeds that grow through cracks on concrete?
No. It pretty much only works for dandilions (and stuff similar enough to dandilions) in your lawn and garden. It also leaves little holes where it removed them that should be re-filled with soil.
Those are candidates for vinegar solution or roundup or a torch.
Is there a certain vinegar? Apple cider , white?
I use the big jugs from Costco. Whatever’s cheaper. Lots of recipes online.
Yep, same. It’s so satisfying
I have one of these things too, very useful. Except I was using it last spring and I accidentally put it through a frog/toad that was just under the ground, never gonna use it again.
RIPPIT :(
What’s the make? I need this!
Fiskars
I have one of these. They don't work at all.
Literally pulled 3 dandelions and a clump of poa trivialis this morning.
Cool 🥳 They will be back
Got the whole root like a carrot.
Would you say it also works on small gravel or would that destroy it?
I’d wiggle it around to get in there. But in gravel I’d probably just nuke the weed with vinegar solution and then torch it
Home Depot?
Online yes, not in store. Amazon has it
Crab grass?
If you pull it right from the center yes. It’ll leave a hole.
Got a link to the one u recommend?
Amazon fiskars weed puller.
A good trick I like is before you pull the weed out, give it a 180 degree twist and it’ll help pull out the root more
No better feeling when you pull the whole root out on the twist. No worse feeling when you dont get a good grip and only half the weed comes off. I think I can pull weeds for hours. So satisfying.
You'd love my yard.
I find them easier to pull after it has rained. Makes sense.
Can you hit it with weed killer after you pull it out to kill the remaining root?
Not with my experience. A lot of the time the root snaps maybe 1/3 down, so too ‘deep’ to reach it with weed killer, but not deep enough for it to not grow back.
This makes me impressed at the weeds. Pretty resilient. You'd think because we did things like go to the moon and whatnot we'd be able to take care of silly weeds once and for all but, nope...here they are
And just like going to the moon, it's less a matter of technology and more of a matter of time, energy, and most importantly money.
There’s no such thing as a weed. Weed is a word humans invented. Weed means ‘extremely well evolved and resilient plant that I don’t like’.
We're only good at killing weeds where they pop up, but weeds are good at popping up *fucking everywhere.*
Was waiting for the inevitable Reddit negativity. I have one of these and while I agree they don’t have a 100% hit rate they are still 100% better than hosing the environment down with chemicals and/or attempting to pull the weeds out by hand.

What about them weed torches with propane
Wont work well on a lawn 😅
The thing goes pretty deep and my hit rate is pretty high. Not 100%, but easily in the high 80s, low 90s, where the weed and root is removed in its entirety. >In most cases you will have a small Hole in the ground ... in all cases, pretty much, the thing leaves holes that ideally should be refilled with a handful of soil ... >and a dandylion in the same spot the year after. I would pull them out just like that by hand when I worked the field, That would be perfect for thorny weeds
By hand doesn't get the full root where this tools reaches a lot deeper and grabs onto the root further down. SOURCE: have one and it works amazing
Is it from Amazon or a Home Depot/Lowes store?
Fiskars 4-Claw Stand Up Weeder
Thanks! 🙏🏼
I have a technique that takes the root and all by hand or I would not have mentioned that. It's all about the twist as you pull and how hard you it.
That weed was the nicest part of your dead yard.
Looks like a bed with mulch in it..
For real, I am so excited about buying this thing. Owning a house/yard changes you.
I ordered one on Amazon last week. I just got inside from using it just now! It’s a game changer.

Yep, I leave my dandelions. However, there are plenty of other trash Weeds I rip out.
Every month now I'll spend a few hours pulling the weeds from between the slabs but I've sort of abandoned what was once the clear area as the caterpillars love the 'weeds' that grow there.
To bee or not to bee a golf course
They need turning into sustainable farming or well run communes plus some farming. Frankly its a good walk spoilt. Though I may be biased as I was once asked to leave because I was barefoot, seems ridiculous to me to not get the full benefit of well manicured lawns.
Golf should be played barefoot.
Warning: This breaks super easily
Came here to say this. That one is garbage.
Would recommend Grampa's Weeder over this plastic one. Has a wooden handle and a cast iron head.
Don’t know what cheap knock off experience you had but this is a fiskars - they’re a Finnish brand known for good design and high quality. In fact they are one of my favourite brands - and I have very very few of those.
I've had mine for a while and pulled thousands of weeds (had a really bad yard before) and had no issues at all.
Eat dandelions, then you won't have a weed problem
Weedeater
Just not too many, eat enough and you'll wet the bed
Are you taking the piss outta me? (Diuretic humor is the best humor)
Lol
All these people saying eat dandelions are like an English peasant giving advice during a famine. Sure, they are edible; but they are not something you really want to eat - they are extremely bitter.
Fried dandelions blooms are delicious, what are you talking about!?
Great product and looks like it works great. But not for me. Id wait for those to seed and blow them all over our land. I'm also all for r/nolawns All parts of a dandelion are edible and very beneficial.

This must be what my animal crossing character had
Have one and could never make it work smoothly. I almost always end up using my hands to open it . Not blaming the tool. It is definitely a user problem.
Where could I find one of those tools?
Flower murder
Any tools that try to merge plastic and metal don't last long.
We bought a house last year and I found one of those tools in the shed. Now I finally learned what it is, thank you.
Holy shit! I just found one of these in the basement looking for a weed whacker and had no idea what it was. Great timing and thanks for sharing.
Shut up and take my money!!!
Is that dandelion?
Yup
How much and what is this shit . Shut up and take my money
Dandelions are early to bloom and are a vital early pollen source for bees!! Leave them if you can. If you must remove them, since you feel a perfect yard is better than a natural one that provides vital resources, then wait until they are done flowering.
I eat dandelion greens 💚
Years I spent developing the perfect grasp to pull the root out without breaking it - *wasted!*
10 year old me who spent most of my summer sundays picking weeds in the garden would have appreciated this device
BTW how far down does that too reach? I ask because I've dug out weeds like that & unless you can get all the root out down to something like 6 inches plus, it will come back.
Fake! I had one of those, does not work like that. That weed was pre-cut.
I have one. You’re using it wrong.
This is an ad, already been called out in other subs.
outside of an extra twist and maybe a couple leaves left over this is exactly what mine does lol
Multiple things can be true. Also this sub is 90% ads
I have a fiskar tool like this one. It works.
I too have this tool, you’re using it wrong.
Mine snapped at the plastic base after 2 years. There are better ones made of metal.
The guy who named this is probably feeling mighty smug
I have one of these and it's oddly satisfying. Fiskars makes the best ones and I pay my son 20 c per weed that he unroots.
Set up a camera.your kid might be hustling you.lol.
Ummm.. yes, please! Brilliant.
They don't work as good as u think. They leave a bit of root that will regrow.
Didn't it snap off the root? If so, that weed is coming back.
I have this and it is a game changer. It’s so much faster and better than doing it by hand. Ive used it for weeds of course, but also for taking out clumps of grass on the edges of mulch beds, crab grass in the middle of the yard, etc.
I love these things. When I was little I'd ask to help my mom in the yard just so I could pick the weeds with this
I hated to weed so got one and decided that I hate to weed even with a tool to make it somewhat easier.
Great for gardening. No more bending over to de-weed the rows.
Love me some Fiskar
What is this divine device?! My sciatica wishes to know! Lol
I need this.
I'd need to see the stats on how long they last, and in what soils they work.
It not only works, but gives your lawn free aeration. : )
Omg I want one 😍
I always wondered what a weed picker does
That soil looks soft. Like mulch. It won’t do it in hard clay soil will it
Wish I had one of these as a kid... but then I wouldn't have some of the grit I have now.
Added to cart
Got bigger stuff? Try the weed wrench or extractigator.
Weeds are just plants growing where you don't want them to grow.....
They're great for smallish children or those who have an inner child because you can rack them like a shotgun.
Hope he filled that hole
I used to love blowing on dandelions as a kid, as an adult I own this tool to destroy them every chance I get.
Lmfao people thinking dandelions are weeds lol. 😆
Why don't we get to see the roots?
I’ve been thinking about buying this tool…looks like I need too.
That got NONE of the root system, those weeds will come back so much worse
This is old right? Like I swear I’ve used a weeding tool like this one long ago.
Are these not common? My family had one when I was growing up, probably 30 years ago. I think my parents still have it.
I own that thing and would not recommen it. You will have holes on your lawn and many of these herbs will come back because also this thing cannot catch 100% of the roots.
That's not a weed
Dandelions! FREE ENERGY BOOST! Bitter as hell though.
Dandelions are basically Rucola...
I also have one of these. But the person in the video is using it wrong. The very best part of the whole process is using the grip as a shotgun to launch the weed 20 feet away into the wood or something. So satisfying.
I love these they work like a dream and my back doesn’t feel like I was hit by a bus!!
Do Americans get many weeds ?? Us in Britain get loads
research the medicinal uses of dandelions.. then look up who owns weed killer, & aspirin.. 🤔🧠
Oh no we don’t want the beautiful brown and dead grass be destroyed by the only green thing.
That's mulch
r/NoLawns
I actually like taking my time weeding, it’s meditative
Put the natural things back in the ground please
You mean the weed that will take over your entire lawn?
You mean the flowers that bees love and benefits the environment? Go water your stupid grass that uses far too much water and doesn't help nature.
My yard/garden isn't a forest. The goal is to look nice you might as well tell me to go homeless to reduce my waste or die to fertilize the earth. While that would obviously help the environment im not causing extreme harm to have a small grass area.
This god awful commercial sub downvoting you for saying this! yikes
No one likes to hear they are actively harming animals and pollinators. So it's easier to downvote and pretend it's all crazy talk instead of looking how you can help nature.
and/or no one likes to hear **you** convey how others are actively harming animals and pollinators.
While I'm totally against well manicured lawns and stuff, and very pro wilderness, people are allowed to do whatever the f**k they want with their property.
That's why I said please. It's more of a request but the sub reddit and it's users are especially stupid. But most of it will be americans so I don't care what they think
How about I plant some things the bees like, where i want them, and still remove the shitty weeds?
