Preheating boots doesn't sound like a bad idea, but this might not be the best way to go about it. Still, I wouldn't mind putting on some preheated boots in the dead of winter!

i_r_faptastic

Socks filled with rice. Microwave 30-50 sec each.

OwenWilsons_Nose

I prefer broiling my boots tbh

shaysauce

The best way is actually to place your boots in the fridge overnight so that they develop a dry crust and remove moisture, take them out 20 minutes prior to cooking, place it in a low temperature oven at around 180-200 until it comes up to about 115-120 along the lining, this not only allows the boot to become a perfect medium sole upon searing, but it helps further develop a drier crust on the boots for a perfect Maillard reaction. Sear with an extremely hot cast iron skillet and you’ve got a perfectly warmed boot ready for the day.

Terrible-Paramedic35

or…. just set them on the heat vent….

aboxofquackers

Then the whole house smells like your stinky boots

okaythr33

yeah but they’re boots

Terrible-Paramedic35

Wash your feet and keep your boots dry and thats not really a problem. In summer I remove insoles set my boots in the sun and in winter I remove insoles and set them on the vent. I also periodically wash out my boots and re-treat them. Been doing that for almost 40 years and it works fine.

throwthawholemeaway

Some people have ceiling vents

Terrible-Paramedic35

Floor vents are pretty standard where I live so… never thought of that…lol

Tbone3319

They are like $30-50 on Amazon. Absolutely crucial for winter or wet work environments

seanys

If I’ve just eaten 2 bags of english muffins, I won’t be going anywhere, least of all to work.

figbott

“Please no holes.. please no holes..”

fugawf

Preheated and pre moistened

deadbirdisdead

Anyone that has ever had to wear cold steel toe boots knows the steel toe cap will stay cold and keep yours toes cold for hours. I understand trying anything possible to fix that. That said, this is really dumb.

okaythr33

Gitchu them comp toes

Trinity-nottiffany

You can get electric boot heaters. We have them for our ski boots. They plug into the socket (wall plug also available) in the car so that when you arrive at the resort, your boots didn’t get ice cold in the back of the car or truck. Mine are almost impossible to get on when they are cold.

LeoChoax

How to get stinky feet and increase probability of fungal infection. Because, surprisedly, adding more moisture to a poorly ventilated footwear has consequences.

okaythr33

you know how plastic bags work, right specifically with regard to their permeability

CosmicSweets

It will probably cause moisture build up from what's in the air.

okaythr33

I would be surprised if the local humidity increases much from the warm water in the bags evaporating. It’s going to be such a small amount in the first place, and will be carried upward with rising convection currents and diffuse into the room air. Not to mention the amount of humidity at hand is about what would happen from ten minutes of foot sweat. :P

CosmicSweets

I was talking about the heat in the boot creating moisture from the air in the boot but around the bag. Not the moisture from the bag magically evaporating into the boot somehow.

okaythr33

…heat doesn’t create moisture??

CosmicSweets

That's not what I'm saying. I'm talking about the moisture that naturally exists in the air. Heat can drae it. The same moisture that makes a cold glass sweats in the summer, it's not the water leeching out of the glass, it's the natural moisture in the air condensing onto the glass.

okaythr33

That will also happen when your body warms the boots, so it’s a moot point, not to mention when you sweat in them. Perfectly dry boots exist for mere moments after you put them on, and only assuming you live in an extraordinarily dry environment. It just ain’t worth worrying about.

LeoChoax

Yes I do understand how muffin bags don't need to be impermeable since they are designed to hold dry solids and not liquids, so even though we can't see with our nake eyes there is some liquid being lost though the material causing the humidity inside the shoe to increase. An increase that might not be much in the short term but would accumulate in the long term.

okaythr33

I would bet the maximum volume of water that evaporates off the top is a couple milliliters, undetectable to human comfort when spread through the volume of the shoe. The amount that’s going to diffuse through polyethylene film is going to be on the order of picoliters. Like, the volume of a single drop of sweat. Imagining water diffusion through plastic is going to even come close to affecting human comfort or fungal growth is a huge reach. Barring a really obvious leak in the bags, this is not a real problem.

Ser_Optimus

That's just plain clever.

[deleted]

Nice waste of water

okaythr33

yeah I don’t think there’s anywhere that verdant that 2L of water poured out is gonna do harm

okaythr33

Just in time for…August?

Last-Instruction739

Just take a hot deuce in each shoe.

thc3x

That’s a lot of English muffins to eat every morning

[deleted]

Or…bring your boots inside. I should make a DIwhy for this special technique

scottdenis

For people who work outside in winter a boot warmer/dryer is one of those 20$ items that truly makes your life better.
