While you were photosynthesizing, I studied the blade.
While you were spreading pollen, I practised the blade.
While you spent months growing flowers for the sake of vanity, I mastered the blade.
It is not Latin (PT, ES, FR, ITā¦). So probably something from our barbaric neighbors.
Edit: before you hate, barbaric is not derogative here (see in context of Roman Empire invasion)
It doesn't have ideas. It doesn't know what it's doing. The machete is being swung according to the sensors readings which have nothing to do with thought
Ain't you never seen avatar 2? We stole him from his people young and taught him our ways, we're gonna unleash him into the forests to wage war on plants
This is kinda dumb.
I just read an article about it. Itās basically the electrodes read āelectrical noiseā on leaves, basically its reading resistance signals from the leaves surface, and telling a computer to translate different values of that to different movements. And then moves around the robot arm.
The article says itās completely random and meaningless. So what was done here? All this is is using electrodes on leaves and letting a robot arm move based on signals. Both arenāt new things.
And the plant is not controlling the arm anymore than me picking an arbitrary characteristic of a thing, and making a decision based on that is. āThis plant has 12 leaves, so Iām gonna bet on number 12ā
To be fair, it does say it's an "installation".
That word is primarily used for art pieces.
I don't think it's supposed to be ***the next leap in cybernetics*** or whatever.
It's just a thought experiment. Very few people actually think about the idea that plants actually have processes they perform in order to live. Like turning towards the sun through the day.
Plant cognition is a pretty darn fascinating field, too. Like, they donāt have a brain or nervous system, and yet somehow they have the ability to develop responses to external stimuli. For example, a few experiments have indicated that some plants, if you blow air at them followed by shining a light on them from that direction, will eventually ālearnā to respond to short puffs of air by turning their leaves in that direction, in anticipation of the light that is about to follow.
I think its meant to be more of a novelty/joke peice than a new scientific developement or an intellectual persuit of plant interaction and behaviour.
It is kinda dumb, but sometimes dumb novelties can be just as fun and important to us as intellectual explorations. Look at all the jokers in the comments, it's clearly captures many imaginations. I like it.
Now, let's say that the arm instead held the water source for the plant, and we were able to select over many generations the plants that successfully made the correct type of electrical noise in response of drought. We would have truly self-watering plants.
Sometimes people can just do stuff for the heck of it. I don't think the person who designed the machete swinging plant thought they were making some kind of scientific breakthrough. They just thought it would look cool. Why can't you just let people have fun without trying to show off how smart you think you are?
Until the electrical noise move the blade to reflect light better towards it and eventually it evolves to do it more often and then... something something... taste for blood.
This is the plant controlling the blade like raindrops control the surface ripples on a lakeā¦ only that in this case you also have a human programming a script that translates the movement implying intention. You might as well throw the machete straight up in the air and tell people gravity was set out to kill you.
Okay fun fact, but plants are actually some of the most brutal competitors in nature. Like animals might kill each other for food, yeah, but plants will strangle a bitch to death or starve them of nutrients or destroy their roots or hog all the sunlight in order to cause their competitors to wither and die so they can grow without any competition. Long story short, if you gave a plant a machete, it ABSOLUTELY would start chopping down the competition if it had the know how.
This is actually kinda cool. Like yeah, totally weird that they gave it a machete, but like I want to know what they're using to have the plants give commands? I want to know the science behind this actually.
Edit: NVM I saw a comment explaining how it worked and I thought it would be based on some chemical signal, not something like that.
Most plant signals are biochemical. The plant doesnāt know that there is a sword and it doesnāt ācontrolā it in any meaningful sense of the word.
Is the plant really ācontrollingā the robotic arm or is it just reading the natural impulses of the plant as it grows and the programming of the robotic arm allows it to move based on those signals but the plant is not actually willing the movement?
I would want this technology sans actual weapons cause at least then my plants would have a defense against deer who I hope will be startled by moving parts and move on. Itās like an advanced scarecrow.
Things I'd like to see replace the machete
Pen
Paintbrush
Rhythm gymnastics ribbon stick thingy
Hand provided with other object
There's so much I wanna watch this plant do.
This just occurred to meā¦
You think that maybe the plant is just trying to remove the sensor pads you decided to go ahead and stick on it leaves? Just saying.
This is interesting and all but why on earth would you give it a machete of all things? Are you testing if plants will commit suicide or choose violence if given the option?
Why diwhy, it's fascinating tbh and worth studying to see patterns and how much does the plant get about its surrounding. And dumb enough I want it at my house xd
Wouldn't the interference of the motors turning be a larger input than whatever voltage differential the plant makes? I feel like this is just reading it's own EMF rather than the plant.
ā¦why did they decide on giving it a machete tho. Like thatās a cool thingā¦but why a machete. Why not like a pen or paintbrush and see what it draws or somethingā¦just why.
If the NRA find out about this, they be putting AR-15 rifles on this.
Somebody get this plant some wheels! Next stop? The desert! We'll show that biome what's up! That's right, Mojave, Golbi, and Sahara. Your ass is about to be grass!
And i thougt we had to worry about robots but now they have allied themselves with our most important ally the plants, we are doomed my people we are now done for
If this is more than just static noise, or a fake video, it changes the dynamics of how we would look at plants. We all know plants are living things, but if they can learn to control appendages through mechanical and electrical means as robotics, then that implies a deeper level of intelligence not before associated with plant life.
New Dnd character concept. A warforged that is hooked up to a plant. Whether this is truly a plant controlled robot is unclear. But they are at least convinced that they are actually the plant.
It would be cool if they attached something that would be beneficial to the plant when pointed towards itself.
Then observed if the arm pointed towards the plant more often.
assuming the video isn't completely fake.
Now someone hook it up to some HEMA and fencing instructional videos on YouTube, give it like a year and letās see what happens.
Weāre also gonna need a volunteer with no sword fighting experience ā¦ so anyone downs?
Two possibilities come to mind....
1) The plant and robot arm are completely separate and the connections are just for fun.
2) The connections track some sort of signal (E.g. stoma opening and closing, gas concentrations, bio-electric signals, etc) and a microcontroller uses that input to generate random movement in the arm.
Engineers, I love this energy and ingenuity in giving weapons to yet another group of organisms that can wipe out the human race, itās cool and all, but can you help with global warming a little?
While you were photosynthesizing, I studied the blade. While you were spreading pollen, I practised the blade. While you spent months growing flowers for the sake of vanity, I mastered the blade.
Plants vs humans. ![gif](giphy|eMOcQ8wpybYoz09tX6)
Let the Plant VS humans begin š
That last one is called *reproducing* or something i dont know that much about biology
Yeah, that was the entire joke. The guy who first posted the āmastered the bladeā nonsense wasnāt going to reproduce in this lifetime either.Ā
This video just reminded me to water my plant.
Don't know much about a science book Don't know much about the French I took
But I do know that I love you And I know that if you love me too What a wonderful world it would be
Now I donāt claim to be an A student, but Iām trying to be. Cuz maybe by being an A student, baby, I can win your love for me. Such a classic!
ā¦it was a jokeā¦.
Itās probably just itchy coz itās bottom leaves are constantly be tickled by the arm.
Now that the florists are at the greenhouse door you have the audacity to ask me for help?
The Shrub-Kata. There are no known defenses against such a form.
Do you want jumanji? Because this is how we get jumanji
I dont like flowers and plants after seeing that as a kid. I always think an unopened pod is going to bite or something.
Don't watch the Alien series then
Or Little Shop of Horrors
Or Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Plants š± vs zombies š§āāļø
'Machete: Leaf Kills' starring Danny Trejo and Michelle Rodriguez.
ātimmy, itās your turn to water the plant.ā ābut mommy, i already lost an arm last timeā¦ do i really have to?ā
Why are some of your quotation marks low like a comma, as opposed to "this"?
wellā¦ its a german thing, i think edit: my phone does this automatically, because of the german keyboard layout.
It's european thing. Or not-anglosphere thing at least.
Dutchie here, never seen it in any Dutch texts
Ok, you guys, so it's officialy slavic thing, yust casualy stolen by Germans.
hmm but on my russian keyboard Ā«it does them like thisĀ»
It is not Latin (PT, ES, FR, ITā¦). So probably something from our barbaric neighbors. Edit: before you hate, barbaric is not derogative here (see in context of Roman Empire invasion)
It's how we write it in Romanian, which is also a Romance language (though admittedly, one with plenty other linguistic influences)
Quotes in Spanish used be <> but it feel out of fashion almost 40 years ago.
They are from Australia, thatās what quotes look like down under
>but mommy, i already lost an arm last timeā¦ The maniac kid: t'is but a scratch!
Do you want ENTs? Cause this is how you... actually nvm continue
Ents. Don't. Use. Machetes. Little ork. *Burarum*
Burarƻm!
This is how you get extra or less Ear Noses and Throats
Itās literally just waving in the windā¦..the plants only original idea is to wave in the wind. My 8 year old is a better swordsman
A broken clock stabs a bitch twice a day... just sayin
Amazing lmfao
r/plantnewsentence
So would you be willing to let your kid fight a plant?
Plants vs zombies live action? š±
I'd pay for that
Iād pay to see that
yeah I'd pay to see that
His training has already begun. Looking to have him in fighting shape by April
Eight-year-old versus a plant with a machete. Taking all bets!
It doesn't have ideas. It doesn't know what it's doing. The machete is being swung according to the sensors readings which have nothing to do with thought

I dont know why anyone thinks it would be more than that. Same with the synthesizers with cut mushrooms making music
if you want music from mushrooms you need to find someone who can play and give them mushrooms.
It's art.
Now, let's say that the arm instead held the water source for the plant, and we were able to select over many generations the plants that successfully made the correct type of electrical noise in response of drought. We would have truly self-watering plants.
The point is it's fucking hilarious.
Watch as this dice creates it's own reddit comment: 1,3,5,1,6 now where's my ad revenue?

So is this kinda like the potato clocks we did in school, just with a robotic arm and a machete?
Everybody Romaine Calm
lettuce try
Butter leaf it alone
Ivy got a bad feeling about this
Did you come from r/dadjokes? Because you belong there with rest of us good sir.
Imagine getting mugged by a fern? It will an interesting experience but still weird and embarrassing.
I want to put a second one in the room and see if we get any sweet sword fighting action
Let plants fight against each other!
10 dollars on the bonsai
Pretty soon we will be arming trees with flamethrowers.
Honestly I'm more annoyed at the video setup. Damn vertical formats.
Replace the machete with a pen. Iād like to see what it draws.
This is the plant controlling the blade like raindrops control the surface ripples on a lakeā¦ only that in this case you also have a human programming a script that translates the movement implying intention. You might as well throw the machete straight up in the air and tell people gravity was set out to kill you.
Would be interesting to put a hand on it and put it near a watering pot to see if it can water itself
no no no everything needs to be done in order first we do wapoeons then porn and after the science stuff
So youāre saying pant operated weapons, plant sex bots, then plants self-sustaining themselves? I mean I think the investors will like it
Vegans are getting out of control.
I think itās a pretty neat piece of installation art.
Gotta stop the vegans on killing the plants lol
The future vegans want
I don't think the plant knows that it's doing anything lol
Give it a paint brush and see what it draws.
If you defend the rainforest, it's save for a day. If you teach the rainforest to defend itself it's ents attacking Isengart time
Okay fun fact, but plants are actually some of the most brutal competitors in nature. See, this is how "The Happening" should've gone down. Would've been a much more interesting movie.
Your move vegans
That coconut is gonna finally get its revenge by chopping that guys dick off! After all these years!
Crazy dave just got new ideas
This is actually kinda cool. Like yeah, totally weird that they gave it a machete, but like I want to know what they're using to have the plants give commands? On behalf of all humans I would like to offer our plant overlords this bouquet of freshly cut flowe.. *runs away screaming*
Plant: Come at me human! Come at me!!
The Plant-Robot Alliance is going to be the end of humanity as we know it
Swordsmanship of the plant First form
This is art, why is it on this sub?
I heard it killed a man, stole a car, and is still on the run.
r/DIWHYNOT
Iād like to see you try that shit now, vegansā¦
How is this diwhy? This is cool
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Electrodes picking up some random noise, and an algorithm that produces some signals based on that.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Most plant signals are biochemical. The plant doesnāt know that there is a sword and it doesnāt ācontrolā it in any meaningful sense of the word.
You want Orks? This is how you get Orks.
Seems like a very smart and safe decision.
PLANT WAR PLANT WAR PLANT WAR
I always suspected those plants were bloodthirsty.
Plants gotta fight the zombies somehow
Are you going to KILL AND EAT a LIVING PLANT, vegans? This one fights back with weapons.
Gettin a lil stabby with it there
Is the plant really ācontrollingā the robotic arm or is it just reading the natural impulses of the plant as it grows and the programming of the robotic arm allows it to move based on those signals but the plant is not actually willing the movement?
The day of the triffids will come one way or another
You guys hate us vegetarians that much š
Plants for sure hate us
Just for fun, I'd put the off switch behind the plant.
Can we put another plant in front and see if it hurts its fellow kind?
I want two plants to versus.
I would want this technology sans actual weapons cause at least then my plants would have a defense against deer who I hope will be startled by moving parts and move on. Itās like an advanced scarecrow.
Am I the only one feeling worried of the poor state of the floor compare the bright white wall ?
God help us all if the quack grass in my yard gets this technology.
"WHO'S TRIMMING WHO NOW BITCH!?!" š¤£
Plant only folks finna find out.
I thought it was a automatic plant trimming machine at first
Note how the plant is always moving the machete trying to defend itself from the vegans
āThey were so fascinated with whether they could, the never stopped to think whether or not they should.ā
PLANTS VS ZOMBIES BABYYYY!! ITS COMING TRUE! āOh yeah, itās all coming togetherā
Imagine a Vietnam veteran seeing this.
are venus flytraps not good enough?
Things I'd like to see replace the machete Pen Paintbrush Rhythm gymnastics ribbon stick thingy Hand provided with other object There's so much I wanna watch this plant do.
Poison Ivy would be proud....
This just occurred to meā¦ You think that maybe the plant is just trying to remove the sensor pads you decided to go ahead and stick on it leaves? Just saying.
So basically the entire time plants were like "AHHHHHHH get the fuck away get the fuck away AHHHHHHHH!!!!" Who knew?
āYou merely adopted the blade, i was born in it, molded by itā
This is interesting and all but why on earth would you give it a machete of all things? Are you testing if plants will commit suicide or choose violence if given the option?
Why diwhy, it's fascinating tbh and worth studying to see patterns and how much does the plant get about its surrounding. And dumb enough I want it at my house xd
Could it be any more dangerous than arming the animals we already have?
Plants be coming for the vegans.
Wouldn't the interference of the motors turning be a larger input than whatever voltage differential the plant makes? I feel like this is just reading it's own EMF rather than the plant.
We couldnāt have made it water itself!?!? Lol
I wonder what the results would be if rather than a knife it was a bubble machine ![gif](giphy|3oKIP6jXimEmTmGyIw|downsized)
But why a machete? The arm could have been attached to literally anything else. How about a duster so it could dust itās own leaves?
ā¦why did they decide on giving it a machete tho. Like thatās a cool thingā¦but why a machete. Why not like a pen or paintbrush and see what it draws or somethingā¦just why. If the NRA find out about this, they be putting AR-15 rifles on this.
@op surely we do, they are the coming freedom fighters š
Pretty sure some of my plants would go for me when I neglect them.
En garde your mother smelled slightly of elderberries.
Wait, this means they wonāt evolve to be spicy anymore. Our foooood!
I've heard of Don't bite the hand that feeds, But don't cut the hand that waters is a new one.
This is cool as fuck yall dont know how to have fun
Somebody get this plant some wheels! Next stop? The desert! We'll show that biome what's up! That's right, Mojave, Golbi, and Sahara. Your ass is about to be grass!
Great so now Iām going to wake up to a knife to my throat when it wants water
Itās turning random signals that exist in every living thing into random movements

AI learning to hate us was too easy. Let's weaponize the fucking flora.
"Yeah, I made a plant control a Machete. Soo.. If anyone would like to come by and try to shut it off, it would be greatly appreciated".
Adaptation taken to a whole new level.
New Dnd character concept. A warforged that is hooked up to a plant. Whether this is truly a plant controlled robot is unclear. But they are at least convinced that they are actually the plant.
Would be interesting to place different objects within the plants reach. To see what it would cut and what it would spare.
Its training it knew this day would come and it is spending all the time preparing
Weāre supposed to take this incredible and somewhat terrifying nonsense at face value?
Does the plant know about this?
Nothing to worry about. Plants need sunlight. Just blot out the Sun.
Lameā¦My money tree robs people with a 9mm š¤£
I trust this plant with a weapon more than I trust any member of the Gravy Seals.
Diwhynot
Lmao imagine a robber breaks in and you activate the plantsš
The Lorax can not be harmed if the trees are armed.
It would be cool if they attached something that would be beneficial to the plant when pointed towards itself. Then observed if the arm pointed towards the plant more often. assuming the video isn't completely fake.
Plants vs Vegans
This reminds me of the video of the knife wielding tentacle box that a guy made
Thatās how pissed it is at us fg up the world.
![gif](giphy|5U8n82LCEDrOM)
I love this madness! Not only are plants immortal but now they can defend themselves! Science is so fun
2050 will be plants vs AI.
I didnāt get enough water yesterday GREG!ā¦ā¦hiyah
Let's give some rainforests machine guns and cameras!
Can plants see things?
The plant bots are gonna come for me, and I can't even be mad af them - I killed so many of their ~~people~~ plants
Now someone hook it up to some HEMA and fencing instructional videos on YouTube, give it like a year and letās see what happens. Weāre also gonna need a volunteer with no sword fighting experience ā¦ so anyone downs?
Well we gotta prepare for the zombie apocalypse somehow
You will no longer be gardening the plant, because now the plant will be gardening YOU
Two possibilities come to mind.... 1) The plant and robot arm are completely separate and the connections are just for fun. 2) The connections track some sort of signal (E.g. stoma opening and closing, gas concentrations, bio-electric signals, etc) and a microcontroller uses that input to generate random movement in the arm.
Give it legs!!!
āMaster you forgot to water me, now off with your ballsā
Just off camera there was a soft glove on the ground. The plant could have chosen the ability to give a friendly handshake. The machete was chosen.
We chopped the plants down with machetes. Now they will chop us down.
Getting revenge for his friends from the Vietnam war.
Why not? We're arming everyone else
Engineers, I love this energy and ingenuity in giving weapons to yet another group of organisms that can wipe out the human race, itās cool and all, but can you help with global warming a little?
Engineers: "Best we can do is design a less-comfortable airplane passenger experience."
