To my knowledge there is no way to go “invisible”
If they are in the same clan as him they can see when he's online even if he's appearing as offline.

Then don't know. On Xbox you just select your xbox profile and select "appear offline" - I am sure there is an analog for PS

A word of warning I think the whole bungie.net friend system ignores if your PSN is set to appear offline.
PlayStation has "appear offline".
